After researching and deconstructing multiple music / album adverts, I am able to collect a variety of ideas on
what to include in my music / album adverts in order to appeal to my target audience. From Ed Sheeran to Justin
Bieber, many conventions of adverts has been included in order to appeal to the audience in that industry /
market for instance: The name of the artist are clearly shown to catch the attention of the audience and to
promote digipaks as well,. The album single/name are also shown to make them aware on what the album is
called / the genre of the music, the release date is also shown to let them know when to purchase it and tour
dates are presented as well. Furthermore, within the POP market, conventions such as so are needed to be put
onto my advert to ensure that it doesn't just only appeal to my audience but also looks professional and
attractive.
Adverts play a key role within this market as seen with the advert of Justin Bieber ‘Purpose world tour’
contributing to the huge success for which, the Revenue from his first 10 concerts of 2017 totals $40 million,
bringing the tour’s overall gross to just under $200 million since launching in March 2016. Such huge revenue has
partly been due to the high establishment and popularity of Justin Beiber within the POP market, but also due to
the adverts of his music and tours for which has been done correctly. Therefore, ideas from these adverts shown
above are clearly successful therefore, most of my ideas will be formed around these adverts.
After analysing and looking at multiple different styles of digipaks in the market, I have been able to
come to a conclusion on what to include in my digipak. I have noticed a new trend within didpaks
as seen with Khalid’s ‘American Teen’ digipak. A retro feeling has been created giving a unique look
as well as starting a new trend. The CD it self has been designed to look like a vinyl disc creating a
unusual feeling. Sales of vinyl in 2016 reached a 25-year high. Although the disc in his album is not
a vinyl the audience may purchase his album, appreciating the design and the meaning behind.
Unique designs such as so is inspirational in giving me ideas on what designs I could create in order
for my digipaks to stand out. Ed Sheeran’s digipak is quite simple but yet attractive. The use of his
fonts, colours, images etc all appeal to the conventions of a digipak as well as appealing to the
music industry. All of the digipaks that I have analysed shown the conventions of digipaks i.e.
album name, track list, stylish font styles, image of artist and many more. Knowing these
conventions are shown in almost every album covers in the POP music industry suggest I should
include these in order to conform to these conventions and to stay in with the trend. Therefore, my
audience would be satisfied as they would be well aware on the construction of the album.
The image on the right represents the music video of Post Malone number one singe, ‘Congratulations’. Post
Malone has been increasingly popular in 2017 creating numerous hits such as ‘Go flex’, and the most recent
one, ‘Rockstar’, Taylor Swift is shown on the left who is a well known artist in the POP industry, creating
numerous hits and music videos with views of 2.4 billion people (on YouTube - ‘Shake it off’). She too has
been in the trend and been increasingly popular since her debut in 2006. From viewing and analysing music
videos such as so, I have gathered numerous information on what I must include to conform to the
conventions. Taylor Swift and Katy Perry in particular has been a great example for me to gather ideas due to
their broad, young audience as well as their huge success in their music video. I have come to a conclusion on
what to include in my music videos in order to stay in with the trends and it includes including: fast cuts and
whip pans, colourful clothing (as well as the setting having a vibrant atmosphere), over the shoulder shots (to
create intimacy between to characters helps tell the narrative) and many more. Most POP music videos that I
have looked at within this market, has a narrative of a ‘boy meets girl’ or relationship trouble between two
characters. This is seen in Akon – Lonely and Beyoncé – Irreplaceable’s music video. Although this may be
too cliché for me to include this narrative in my music video, this may be included in my narrative to ensure
my audience are aware well aware of the narrative (Simon Frith Narrative theory).
