The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) is organizing a hybrid launch event for its 2023 Global Food Policy Report in Nairobi, Kenya, in collaboration with University of Nairobi and as part of the CGIAR Initiative on National Policies and Strategies (NPS) seminar series on May 19, 2023, at 2.00pm.
The 2023 Global Food Policy Report, IFPRI’s flagship report, provides a broad set of evidence-based recommendations for better predicting and preparing for crises, addressing crises when they occur and building equity and resilience of food systems.
The recent overlapping, complex shocks to food systems, including the COVID-19 pandemic, higher food prices, conflicts, and natural disasters have increased the risk of food insecurity, hunger, and malnutrition, thus disrupting livelihoods, increasing poverty, and further diminishing prospects for the world’s most vulnerable people. As crises become more frequent, complex, and prolonged, the report calls for reconsideration of food crisis responses, and building more long-term response solutions guided by solid evidence on the impacts of policies, programming, tools, and governance approaches. There is an urgent need for renewed and broader efforts to prevent, mitigate, and recover from crises in ways that build food system resilience, protect the livelihoods of women and marginal groups, ensure their inclusion in crisis response, and address the impacts of conflict and migration.
The Kenya discussion of IFPRI’s 2023 GFPR will present key findings and recommendations of the report at global and regional levels. A distinguished set of discussants will then present their reflections on the report and provide insights on crisis response and resilience building in Kenya.

IFAD and CIAT have a shared vision: a world without poverty and hunger, where natural resources are used economically and sustainability for the benefit of everyone, and where enough food is produced efficiently to sustain good nutrition and food security. Our success in South-South coordination, making markets work for smallholders, transforming subsistence farming systems into ecoefficient
hubs of change, and empowering poor rural women and men through improved incomes speaks for itself.
Poverty is one of the biggest obstacles to human development and economic growth. Although progress has been made in reducing the global number of the poor, about 767 million people continue to live in extreme poverty and inequalities are still pervasive. Most of them live in rural areas and depend on agriculture for their livelihoods.
With the adoption of the Agenda 2030, countries have renewed their commitment to fight against poverty and hunger. As part of its mandate, FAO supports countries to reduce rural poverty by ensuring that processes of structural and rural transformation are pro-poor and inclusive, to make sure that no one is left behind.
In helping countries in their efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger FAO’s multi-sectoral approach aims to address the social, economic and daily challenges that poor rural people face. This includes increasing access to natural resources and other assets for the rural poor, creating decent employment in agriculture and the rural economy, building strong social protection systems, strengthening rural institutions and empowering the rural poor to benefit from the development process.

enriched maize varieties much more
than ever before.

Selenium, Vit A, D, C, etc.

healthy immune systems, especially

partnerships

biomedical sciences → better understanding
of traits that contribute to improved
metabolism
▪ Enhance content of under-researched
bioactive compounds that strengthen
immune response (Covid19 lesson!)
▪ Political economy: communication, advocacy,
education and behavior change

7. ▪ About 86% of agrovets: difficulty to obtain
supplies from their suppliers due to the blockage
of transportation and product unavailability →
50-90% dip in agribusinesses.
▪ A one-size-fits-all relief package would NOT be
effective for farming communities living in
different domains.
▪ Major support should be on facilitating transport
and distribution of seed and fertilizers, access to
food supplies through the local government’s
schemes, and provision of soft loans.
