BLENDED LEARNING

What is
blended
learning?

Blended Learning

Learning occurs in both face-toface and online experiences.

Learners have at least some
control over the time, place,
path and pace of their learning.
Blended Learning

Assessment provides critical
information about what one still
has to learn.
The learning path “adapts”
based on the learner’s
performance.
Feedback is immediate and
concrete.
Blended Learning

Technology provides’ multiple
pathways of access to the
complex concepts students must
master.
Teachers can now provide
customized guidance and
coaching on how to think deeply
about complex concepts.
Blended refers to a mix of online and face-to-face learning. The mix of each is up
to an individual school. Blended learning programs look to leverage the best of
face-to-face learning (interaction, caring relationships with adults, personalization,
“just-in-time” coaching) with the best of online (personalization, adaptive
curriculum, bringing the world to the student).

School Model
• 8 hrs/wk of Personalized
Learning Time (PLT) @
School
• 8 hrs/wk of PLT @ Home
• Each student has a
Personalized Playlist
accessed on-line.
• Each course has 100 hrs. of
Project Time.
Math Rotation
• 3 math teachers teach a
single course at the same
time, for all students taking
that course.
• 3 Daily Rotations for each
course: Direct Instruction,
Self-Paced On-Line, Small
Group.
• One math teacher works
with each rotation.
Math Rotation
• Took down the walls.
• Created a flexible
classroom space.

• Created a “genius bar”
where students can make
an apt. for a quick shot of
support.
50/50 Blend
• 225 students
• 5 teachers
• 5 aides
• 2.5% of the budget is
allocated for technology
• Per Pupil funding is
~$5,500.
50/50 Blend
• 50% of time is allocated
to online, self-paced
courses
• 50% of time is allocated
to work with teachers:
1:1, small group, class
Math Credit Recovery
All math courses are
available online.
If students don’t complete a
course, they can continue it
in the math lab at their own
pace, with a math teacher
providing support.
Online collaborative space:
students can interact with each
other, teachers, experts.
Ex: AP Course taught by a Bronx
Teacher, with iSchool Students
participating through Skype.
Course material is online,
students are working on
interdisciplinary problem-based
courses.
• Online, self-paced,
personalized and adaptive
curriculum

• Teachers float, work with small
groups and 1:1
• Daily analysis of data to
determine who needs support
that day
• Students organized by what
they know and can do (not by
age)
• Small groups of students
rotate on a customized
schedule.
• Online courses and teachers
collaborate with face-to-face
teachers.
DESIGN
CONSIDERATIONS
How will this open
up flexibility in your
schedule?
How will it make
your curriculum
more CCR?
What are your
technology needs
and resources?
What does your
space lend itself to?
What capacity do
teachers need to
build?
Who will provide or
create, host and manage,
your online curriculum?
