immigrant from Mexico who started working as a day labor worker when he first
arrived in the country, however he has had steady work from Blasco Martinez who
owns a gardening business which he tries to convince Carlos to buy from him as he
says he is moving. The idea of being self employed is very appealing to Carlos but he
knows he can never afford to do so and the risk of getting caught and deported is very
high. Carlos has a son Luis who is reluctant to go to school on a daily basis and gets

There are many conflicts throughout the movie such as Luis fighting off the
temptation to join the welcoming gang life style which looks to be his answer to
finding a place where he belongs and a family that he no longer has. Luis is also
trying to avoid becoming like his father in which he does not want to mow lawns

respect for what he does to earn money. Perhaps that biggest conflict in the movie
is both Carlos and Luis against society which appears to be completely against
them as they work together to get their stolen truck back but are met with nonstop

back but only to find himself getting pulled over by a police officer and getting

For my research paper, I will be studying the work and paintings of Jacob
Lawrence. Jacob Lawrence was an American painter and was very highly
commended African American artist of the 20 century. What he is best known for
is his Migration Series. He was born in Atlantic City, New Jersey on September 7,
1917. When he was the age of two his mother deposited him and his two younger
siblings in foster care in Philadelphia after his parents divorced. When he was
thirteen he went to work in New York City and there he went to join his mother. He
also spent fifteen years teaching as a professor at the University of Washington.
Lawrence was also widely known for producing narrative collections such as the
Migration Series and War Series. Shortly after Lawrence had arrived there, he was
introduced to art when his mother had enrolled him in Utopia Children s Center,
which then had an after school art program. At the age of 16 he dropped out of
school and took classes at the Harlem Art Workshop where it was taught by Charles
Ashton and he very often visited the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1937, he won
a scholarship to the American Artist School in New York. When he graduated in
1939 he had received funding from the Works Progress Administration Federal Art
Project. By that time, he had already established his own type of modernism and that

Another cause of the riots was the mistreatment of the arrested patrons from the
police. The patrons taunted the police as they were paraded out into the streets to the

Our city is called New Nashville, with a population of about 13,000. Our city is
loosely based on Nashville, TN; so our climate is hot and humid, as well as the
geography being low and flat. We also have a river that goes through the the upper
part of town. With the geography being so perfect for parks, our economy is largely
spent on parks for all ages, community centers, and other buildings that usually go
into residential areas. Our city has a very peculiar set up; where our commercial
and residential are together, but our industrial buildings are as far away as possible.
We decided to set it up this way because we wanted to ensure that no pollution
would harm our residents. Our residential and commercial areas consist of houses,
shops, religious centers, schools, libraries, parks, and entertainment places.
Meanwhile, the industrial area is full of many successful companies, as well as solar
power buildings, water towers, and low pollution garbage and sewage buildings.
The infrastructure in Nashville isn t what one would call the most unique at first;
because we have the normal facilities that most cities have. However, when you
look closer, you ll discover that we have spent much money on police, hospitals,
and fire stations; to ensure the safety of our residents. After, we decided to add as
many schools and ways of transportation as we could; to make sure our city s
residents are educated and can get around. Then we added the entertainment
centers, like parks, malls, etc. The way we set up our infrastructure was very
important for our city, as we tried to make sure that the number one priority was
safety. This took a large chunk out of our budget; but it greatly reduced our crime,
