The Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI) was established in 1974 to regulate and promote research on jute farming and processing. It began as the Jute Agricultural Research Laboratory established by the Indian Central Jute Committee in 1936. BJRI conducts agricultural and technological research with the objectives of improving jute seed varieties, production, and processing. Some of its successes include sequencing the genomes of Tossa and desi jute varieties in 2009 and 2013, as well as the fungal pathogen Macrophomina Phaseolina.
