MEDIA IN BRITAIN
These are some
examples of the
newspapers you might
come across in the UK
These newspapers are
more left-wing, which
means they tend to
present a more liberal
perspective of events.
These newspapers are
more right-wing, which
means they tend to
present a more
conservative
perspective of events.
These newspapers are
free – you often find
them at train stations.
These are tabloid
newspapers – they are
often sensationalist
and report on
celebrities.
Broadsheet
newspapers used to
be large ('broad')
newspapers and very
text heavy. They now
tend to be smaller, but
are often more
detailed and avoid
over-dramatic
headlines.
These are middle
market newspapers.
They still tend to be
sensationalist, but are
more text-heavy.
The 'I' looks like a
tabloid, but it is a
commuter version of
the old broadsheet
'The Independent'
which is not only
available online.
The Financial Times is
specifically about
business and stock
market news.
There are also local
newspapers, they
focus on news in a
specific town or
region.
These are often free, or
very cheap, and rely
heavily on advertising
for funding.
Many people in the UK
read the news online
now. Many of the
newspaper
companies have
websites and phone
apps.
They also have
Facebook and Twitter
pages. These are
social media
platforms. Television news
providers also have
websites, such as the
BBC, Sky News and Al
Jazeera.

WHO OWNS THE MEDIA IN THE UK?
News UK (owned by
Rupert Murdoch) own
The Sun and The Times.
British Sky
Broadcasting provides
many Sky services, and
news for most
commercial radio
stations.
ITV operates ITV
networks and is a
shareholder of ITN
news.
Trinity Mirror is Britain's
2nd largest newspaper
group. It owns national
and local papers.
Northern& Shell own
several national
newspapers and
Channel 5.
The UK does not really
have a plural media
market – a small
number of companies
own much of the
nation's media output.
TELEVISION IN THE UK
• The British terrestrial channels (now provided digitally) are:
• BBC One and BBC Two – public service broadcaster (we must pay a licence fee for BBC
TV and online services. No external adverts and no commercial breaks. BBC One and ITV
normally bid to show major events such as football finals. BBC One aired the Olympics.
• ITV – Independent Television – commercial broadcaster, adverts are shown between
shows.
• Channel 4- commercial broadcaster, but has always had a strong public service remit.
Channel 4 tends to have more shows representing minority groups, for example, it aired
the Paraolympics (however its representations of these groups does not always
transgress stereotypes, as with My Big Fat Gyspy Wedding). Channel 4 has adverts.
• Channel 5 – commercial broadcaster with adverts.
Most of these channels have an online streaming service too: BBC Iplayer, ITV.com, All4

TELEVISION IN THE UK
• Since 2012 all television in the UK has been provided digitally. This means everyone
has a 'digi-box' with hundreds of channels.
• Many of the terrestrial providers have extra digital channels, i.e. 'More Four',
CBeebies (for children).
• Sky and Virgin are the biggest providers of paid-for digital services, their packages
include many more channels, including specialist movie or sports channels.
• Many people now watch TV shows and films online. In the UK, the most popular
paid-for streaming services are Netflix and Amazon Prime.

  • 2. These are some examples of the newspapers you might come across in the UK These newspapers are more left-wing, which means they tend to present a more liberal perspective of events. These newspapers are more right-wing, which means they tend to present a more conservative perspective of events.
  • 3. These newspapers are free – you often find them at train stations. These are tabloid newspapers – they are often sensationalist and report on celebrities. Broadsheet newspapers used to be large ('broad') newspapers and very text heavy. They now tend to be smaller, but are often more detailed and avoid over-dramatic headlines. These are middle market newspapers. They still tend to be sensationalist, but are more text-heavy. The 'I' looks like a tabloid, but it is a commuter version of the old broadsheet 'The Independent' which is not only available online. The Financial Times is specifically about business and stock market news.
  • 4. There are also local newspapers, they focus on news in a specific town or region. These are often free, or very cheap, and rely heavily on advertising for funding.
  • 5. Many people in the UK read the news online now. Many of the newspaper companies have websites and phone apps. They also have Facebook and Twitter pages. These are social media platforms. Television news providers also have websites, such as the BBC, Sky News and Al Jazeera. TASK: Do a Google search of the following new sites. How do the present the same story differently?   • 6. WHO OWNS THE MEDIA IN THE UK? News UK (owned by Rupert Murdoch) own The Sun and The Times. British Sky Broadcasting provides many Sky services, and news for most commercial radio stations. ITV operates ITV networks and is a shareholder of ITN news. Trinity Mirror is Britain's 2nd largest newspaper group. It owns national and local papers. Northern& Shell own several national newspapers and Channel 5. The UK does not really have a plural media market – a small number of companies own much of the nation's media output.

TELEVISION IN THE UK • The British terrestrial channels (now provided digitally) are: • BBC One and BBC Two – public service broadcaster (we must pay a licence fee for BBC TV and online services. No external adverts and no commercial breaks. BBC One and ITV normally bid to show major events such as football finals. BBC One aired the Olympics. • ITV – Independent Television – commercial broadcaster, adverts are shown between shows. • Channel 4- commercial broadcaster, but has always had a strong public service remit. Channel 4 tends to have more shows representing minority groups, for example, it aired the Paraolympics (however its representations of these groups does not always transgress stereotypes, as with My Big Fat Gyspy Wedding). Channel 4 has adverts. • Channel 5 – commercial broadcaster with adverts.   • 8. TELEVISION IN THE UK • Since 2012 all television in the UK has been provided digitally. This means everyone has a 'digi-box' with hundreds of channels. • Many of the terrestrial providers have extra digital channels, i.e. 'More Four', CBeebies (for children). • Sky and Virgin are the biggest providers of paid-for digital services, their packages include many more channels, including specialist movie or sports channels. • Many people now watch TV shows and films online. In the UK, the most popular paid-for streaming services are Netflix and Amazon Prime.
