There are two main approaches to prosthetic eyes - epiretinal and subretinal. Epiretinal implants are placed on top of the retina and stimulate retinal ganglion cell bodies and axons in the periphery. Subretinal implants are placed underneath the retina to allow for more natural signal processing but risk occluding the vasculature. Both aim to create visual percepts by electrically stimulating neural elements in patterns, but big challenges remain around understanding the neural code for perception. Progress is being made through diverse collaborations between scientists and clinicians to rehabilitate the millions of people worldwide who are blind.
