Photosynthesis is the process by which plants, algae, and some bacteria use sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water to produce glucose and oxygen. The chemical equation that represents photosynthesis is: sunlight + CO2 + H2O → C6H12O6 + O2. It takes place inside the chloroplasts of photosynthetic organisms, where chlorophyll absorbs sunlight and the thylakoids split water to produce oxygen and the stroma converts carbon dioxide into sugar. Photosynthesis converts solar energy into chemical energy stored in glucose and transforms carbon dioxide and water into energy-storing sugars and oxygen.
