3rd.January, 2018
The significance of animal symbolisms in Life of Pi In the Yan Martel s Life of Pi , he told a story
about his survival at sea. It is a cruel and bloody story with zebra, hyena, orangutan and tiger. The
hyena killed zebra and orangutan. Tiger killed hyena. Actually, animals represented people: zebra was
a sailor, hyena was cook, orangutan was Pi s mother and tiger was Pi. Animal symbolisms is
significant in Life of Pi because it compares the differences and similarities between animals and
humans; it makes readers feel better; It reveals people s survival instincts. Pi s story which uses
animals as characters compares the differences and similarities between animals and humans. In the Pi
s story, the tiger killed the blind people and eat him: I will confess that I caught one of his arms with
the gaff and used his flesh as bait. I will further confess that, driven by the extremity of my need and

story with animals. Mr. Okamoto: Yes. The story with animals is the better story (Yan Martel s Life of
Pi , chapter 99). The second story that human killed human and ate would make readers feel horrible,
bloody and cruel . Pi uses animals to represent human can make readers more acceptant and feel
reasonable. It make sense that hyena ate zebra and orangutan; tiger ate hyena for survival. Therefore,
the story with animals can make readers understand well, and feel better to know this

Scapegoats In Germany
Overlooked Once, Adolf Hitler said, It s not the truth that matters, but victory. Obviously, this quote
shows that Hitler s mindset was directed towards winning, and not his moral values. He made false
accusations about the innocent Jews, killing over six million of them. These false accusations were
simple, repeated, and, eventually, people believed it. The rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party affected
how people viewed the Jews at the time. To begin, events in Adolf Hitler s life lead to his viewpoints
and affiliations. Secondly, the creation of the Nazi Party was critical to the formation of Germany s
point of view. Lastly, Jewish people had been used as scapegoats for the loss of World War I and
Germany s economic crisis.

were engaged in a conspiracy for world domination. Behind the scenes it was them who controlled
society and made Germans suffer. For Instance, the Germans thought that the Jews had killed Christ
and were responsible for large unfortunate events in Germany. These accusations had always been
floating around, and the Nazi Party had only increased Jewish hate, however, Jewish antisemitism and
their use as scapegoats had always been around. For example, during the Black Death, the Jews were
blamed for poisoned the wells and being immune to the Black Death; unfortunately, the scapegoating
of Jews continued, changing people s ideas about the religion of Judaism. In the analysis, Jews were
blamed for several tragic events for Germany, changing the way people viewed

Voting Rights In America
In my opinion, each citizen has a civic and moral duty to vote. It is also a requirement, a
responsibility, an obligation. It s part of a bigger picture. I may speak passionately about voting rights,
that s only because as a naturalized citizen, I believe that I have been given this privilege. For me, it is
certainly an honor to be able to exercise my free will to vote in this country. Conversely, being able to
vote reminds me of how privileged I am in comparison to other countries, whose citizens have no
freedom and/or a choice. This country certainly has come a long way, paving the way for all its
citizens to be able to vote, when not so long ago, that few of America s inhabitants could not
participate in elections: among the excluded were

Sociological Concepts In Sicko
Sicko, a documentary film by Michael Moore, describes the medical issue in which many people who
live in the United States have to suffer their sickness due to the high treatment costs. Many people in
the U.S. do not have health insurance because they can afford for that. However, not only people that
do not have health insurance but also the people who have health insurance struggle for health care
coverage when they have an illness. Moreover, compared to other countries such as Canada, England,
France and Cuba, American health care system is extreme complicated and extremely expensive. To
receive the treatment, patients in the United States have to go through multiple questions and
processes, but there is no assurance that they will have the most effective treatment. ... Show more

Rescission is an impressive term to describe the health care problem in the U.S. Many insurance
companies tend to looking for the reasons to cancel coverage after a person gets sick. The difficulty is
that people are overwhelmed with the long list of question and information before registration or
treatment. That small mistakes or lack information is hard to avoid will be the reason for rescission.
The film shows that insurance company have thousands of reasons to refuse to provide coverage. The
medical issues can be explained by the features of capitalism in the United States. Capitalism is
considered as an economic system based on production for profit. While patients in Canada, England,
and France receive free health care and many free services from the government, people living in the
United States has to pay a lot money for those services from their pockets.
While doctors in England get bonus when making their patients live a healthy lifestyle to prevent
illness, the American doctors get more benefits when selling more medicine or

Film Techniques In Shawshank Redemption
Shawshank Redemption is a film that was directed by Frank Darabont. Shawshank Redemption was a
film about Andy Dufresne, who goes to prison for a double murder that he did not commit and serves
two life sentences, Andy makes long lasting friendships at Shawshank Prison and has many hobbies
that he does. In Shawshank Redemption a major theme in this film is escape as it is displayed through
the film numerous times and in different formats such as film techniques and characterization.
Shawshank Redemption is a box office classic and it has been referred to as the best film ever made. A
scene where escape was featured heavily is when Andy and his friends were tarring a roof as Red had

Andy escapes by making a hole through the wall over a twenty year period and then during a stormy
night, Andy breaks the sewage pipe by using a piece of concreate while it is masked by the sound of
thunder. Escape is displayed very comprehensively through film techniques and characterization.
When Andy escaped through the sewers and ended in the river it felt like as if he was baptised because
he escaped from the claustrophobic confines of Shawshank and he also escaped the corruption and
money laundering as the warden had forced him to book his laundering schemes otherwise he would
make it hell for him. The major film technique that was involved in this scene was when Andy was
breaking the pipe, the camera was facing up towards him and then switch to the lightning strike
through the window, then quickly switch to Andy crashing the piece of concrete against the pipe. This
film technique gave the effect of intensity and made the audience be on the edge of their seats. This
scene if very significant to the story because this when Andy literally escapes from Shawshank and the
themes displayed in the scene displays how much defiance and hope Andy really had. In conclusion,
Shawshank Redemption used characterization and film techniques to display Escape through Andy
and the people around successfully. Personally, I really enjoyed watching Shawshank Redemption
because the film used a lot of thought provoking themes

Age Of New Imperialism Analysis
During the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, Europe was experiencing an Age of Discovery, led by the
spanish. During this time, nations in Europe were mostly ruled by absolute monarchs, and the lower
classes were repressed. Furthermore, Europe was in constant religious warfare, as Protestantism had
recently arose and created divisions in once united territories. Centuries later, Europe once again
began reaching for international control. This resurgence of exploration is known as the Age of New

During the Age of Discovery, most nations had absolute monarchs, and thus the glory received from
expeditions abroad would directly go to the monarch, rather than to the nation itself. This is evidenced
by the extravagant palaces of Versailles and el Escorial, which were constructed using the profits from
the Age of Discovery. Furthermore, many European nations had impoverished lower classes, that only
suffered while the extravagant monarchs indulged in the new income from overseas trade. In contrast,
during the nineteenth century and the Age of New Imperialism, the glory received from conquest
would increase the nationalism of the entire country. This patriotic fervor gripped nations and was the
cause of both unification and warfare. Specifically, this nationalism and glory was used by King
Charles X of France who gained more power by increasing the patriotism of his people. Despite his
absolutist rule, the people of France did not rebel, as they were proud of their nation s African
expansion. In conclusion, the motivation of glory while expanding is similar in both of the ages of

Top-Down Influences On Spoken Word Recognition
Discuss the evidence for top down influences on spoken word recognition.
What is the best way of accounting for these effects?
Introduction
One fundamental issue in the study of spoken word recognition is concerned with how and when
bottom up information (i.e., raw acoustic input) is integrated with top down knowledge (i.e., lexical,
morpho syntactic and semantic information) when processing speech, if at all. Interactive accounts,
represented by the TRACE model, acknowledge top down flow of information as one essential route
within its theoretical portrait of a bi directional spread of activation when processing spoken words, as
in contrast to autonomous ones, such as the SHORTLIST B model, which endorse a unidirectional
bottom up approach. The paper discussed both positive and negative empirical evidence for top down
effects in speech perception following a chronological order in line with two influential theoretical
accounts (i.e., Interactive versus Autonomous) to shed light on a more comprehensive understanding
of spoken word recognition. In particular, this discussion aims to argue that the role for top down
influences on spoken word could be better consolidated empirically, only when the idea of top down
flow is more rigorously conceptualized.
Early evidence
One long running approach to investigate how does higher level information influence speech
perception focuses on testing if lexical knowledge influences phoneme perception through top down
feedback, or

Langston Hughes story, Thank You, Ma am, Takes place late at night on a darkened street, where life
is tough. Roger is caught trying to steal a woman s pocketbook but when an unexpected act of
kindness from the woman towards a poor boy that brings them together. As the woman cares about the
boy she takes him in to give him food and let clean his look up. The boy does not resist going to the
woman s house. The boy could really use the woman s trust in the future so in the story, he is trying to
build her trust back The theme explored in Thank You Ma am by Langston Hughes is that when one
person goes out of their way to help another, everybody benefits from kindness. The first reason why
the woman takes care of the boy is because she cares about how the boy is treated. She brings him
home to give him food and wash his face, she says Then it will get washed tonight, this shows that she
was implying that she will bring him home to clean him up. We can infer from the story that the

Dinosaur Art Essay
The Significance of Dinosaur Art
Dinosaurs are creatures that seem to fascinate humans, since all we have left are their fossils.
Although, through art, their bodies can be put back together and we have a better sense of what they
looked like. The problem with art is that pictures can sometimes be disproportionate, unrealistic, or
even made up. Young children who learn about dinosaurs may think that they are actually different
colors and can talk for example. This is why it is important to make dinosaur art as realistic as
possible and more informative.
In an article titled, Do They Really Look Like That? The Science Of Dino Art , writer John Roach
discusses people who do art and paleobiology for a living. A man by ... Show more content on

Besides paying attention to new discoveries, paleo artists must notice how information is interpreted
by different people. Paleo artist John Sibbick states that a bunch of people could have the same
scientific information and fossil evidence in front of them, but how they all interpret it is very
different. Everyone has a different artistic style, but the important thing is that their pictures clearly
depict dinosaurs in an accurate environment with the dinosaurs realistic themselves.
Through the years, paleo art has increased greatly, due to an increase in scientific findings and
information being confirmed. The understanding of dinosaurs has increased and the art has changed to
reflect that , said Sloan (2). One step to an increase in dinosaur understanding and art was in the 1980
s. Paleontologist Robert Bakker came up with a theory that dinosaurs were warm blooded. He thought
that fossils looked more like warm blooded bones. Eventually his theory was accepted all over. This
had a big impact on dinosaur art and then it encountered a drastic change. Instead of dinosaurs
standing around and doing nothing but eating, they were now running and hunting their prey. The art
changed from still life to a more action filled art, which appealed to more people and made the lives of
dinosaurs seem more complicated than originally believed.
After Robert Bakker s theory, was the discovery of small and medium sized dinosaurs that were found

Standardization of Computer Forensics through Legal and...
Abstract Technological advancement in computer technology has opened new horizons for human
progress along with creating new criminal opportunities. These computer based crimes are difficult to
handle due to their rapid growth and transnational scope. It needs a two prong strategy which includes
procedural and legal enhancements. Keeping in view the need of standardization in computer forensic
process a comprehensive framework is suggested in this research. It will allow investigators to submit

Computer forensic involves complex nature of evidence. It makes computer forensic weaker in the
eyes of law. There are many inter organizational and legal issues involved in investigation. Evidence
collected from a computer device must be legally acceptable and it requires a dedicated, flexible and
comprehensive forensics framework.
2. Problem defined
The rapid growth of computer technology has created new opportunities for criminals to exploit online
vulnerabilities against information stored and transmitted over advanced communication networks.
The future growth of the information technology is endangered from growing cyber threats. [1]
There are two main interlinked problem areas [2] highlighted in this research. First one is the
procedural framework of forensics framework. Second one is the legal framework of the electronic
crimes in Pakistan.
Cyber threat is a global problem and it needs a global solution, involving all stakeholders. All
countries linked together through cyber space must have adequate laws to cop with electronic crimes
and especially computer crimes. In Pakistan The Electronic Transactions Ordinance, 2002 was the first
specific ordinance, it was a base for the Prevention of Electronic Crime Ordinance (PECO) 2007/2009
along with the laws contained in the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC).
Although PECO covers a lot of criminal scope yet many limitations are there in this ordinance. These
limitations include:

Studies have shown, that adults who have had cosmetic surgery when they were
teenagers, had more complications compared to people who had waited until they were
adults to get the same procedure done. Typical cosmetic surgeries last up to ten years,
so having a cosmetic procedure done as a teenager, may result in a lifetime of similar
operations just to be assured that the health risks stay as minimal as possible. However,
this does not mean that having repeated surgeries will eliminate the health risks that come
with each procedure. Any type of implant carries numerous diseases and health risks
that can be harmful to anyone, especially to a still developing teenager. Also, any type of
procedure involving the removal of parts of the body comes with it s own risks, including
infection, damage to vital organs, and blood clots. All of these cosmetic surgeries come
with an extensive amount of health risks, especially for teenage patients. Therefore, it
is nearly impossible to predict the outcome of even the simplest procedure, despite the
amount of information these young patients may be subjected to.
Teens who are having these cosmetic surgeries are not doing them to look average, they are doing
them to look better than normal

This memorialization effort was a long time coming considering the forced labor camps, which
terrorized a nation , began in 1929 and lasted through 1956. Even after the death of Josef Stalin, the
release of massive numbers of prisoners, and crumble of communism, the Soviet Union still could not
come to terms with its totalitarian past. The prisoners adapted to the difficult living in the camps but
once they were back in society they had a difficult time readjusting as not to be maladaptive (Frankl
135). During the 50 s and 60 s doctors could legally only treat the somatic symptoms of camp
survivors, although they knew of the camp syndrome that plagued their patients psychologically.
During this time there was also no field of specialization for post traumatic stress syndrome or any
scientific articles published about the syndrome. Beginning in 1992 and previously as a branch of
Memorial, an organization called Compassion was formed to remedy postponed psychosomatic
consequences of torture, enforced by age, pathology, and unfavorable living conditions. (Adler 115)
Their treatment and research has led to the development of official and scientific findings regarding
the experience of repression. Survivors also felt it was safer to speak of the previously taboo subject of
the Gulags after the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union. Between 1992 and 1997, four million
applications were filed for rehabilitation and yet only 1.5 million were granted (Frierson and Vilensky

atrocities from ever happening again. The efforts of Memorial to commemorate and forever honor the
victims of Stalin s repression aids in this, as does the goal of Compassion in treating surviving

Being a multicultural country, New Zealand is largely seen as a cautious society regarding alcohol use.
The use of alcohol affects all strata of society. Alcohol Policy favors the marketing to the product, and
alcohol is available everywhere and to all age (15+) groups without any restriction inside Auckland
city. The easy access to and availability of alcohol have created an extremely conducive social
environment, especially among the young people to begin drinking. At the national level, alcohol is a

Watching the lion king the next time around I can defiantly look at it with more understanding of the
story behind the lion king. The lion king is an apparent adaptation of Shakespeare s hamlet, by the
theme of revenge and justice. In hamlet, Claudius s murder of King Hamlet initiates Hamlet s quest
for revenge, and Claudius s death is the end of that quest. In the lion king mufsa, the king of the jungle
is murdered by his own brother scar. Young simba, mufasas son and the prince of the jungle is now

SPIRITUAL FORMATION THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN
BY SOMMER BARNES
LIBERTY UNIVERSITY ONLINE
Abstract
In this research paper, I will try to illustrate my hypothesis of spiritual formation throughout the
lifespan by using my interpretation of a collection of theories. The theories I will refer to include
Piaget s Cognitive Development Theory, Erikson s Psychosocial Theory, and Kohlberg s Development
of Moral Reasoning Theory. In Piaget s Theory of Cognitive Development, he develops a theory of
cognitive development that occurs in stages from persons under two years of age through age 14.
Piaget s theory relates to the cognitive development of a human person. In Erik Erickson s Theory of
Psychosocial Development, Erikson describes a theory ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
* * Erik Erickson s theory uses distinct critical crises that occur in one s life that require an ah hah
moment which leads to maturity. It is with this model I will now illustrate another perspective on
spiritual formation through the life cycle. Erikson puts a clear emphasis on society s role in the
development of n individual. Erikson advises that crises are never completely resolved and can re
emerge later in life, if left unresolve. I think that throughout ones spiritual journey we all have
different things that we question, learn, discover and each of these changes in thinking all come from a
moment that you decided that is your belief spiritually. Modeling Erikson s stages of psychosocial
development, the first stage is basic trust vs. mistrust. A spiritual leader, a church family, a version of
your bible; these things are all things that you rely on to get to know your higher power. These things
should align in most basic beliefs but when they contradict one another, a seeker of truth must ask
himself What do I believe? In the next stage of development, autonomy vs. shame are a crisis that
occur when the thinking becomes strong and confident when the spiritual journey is welcoming, joyful
and environmentally sound. In cases * If a believer is surrounded with unstable fellowship, lost in the
crowd churches and too many questions within, the seeker can

Career Of AAutomotive Technician
Career College Research Paper I would like to be an automotive technician. Automotive technicians
inspect, maintain, and repair vehicles. I chose this this career because I have worked on cars since I
was young. Not many people want to be an automotive technician. As a result, there are more jobs
available than there are qualified technician. Most automotive technicians work in good environments.
Automotive technicians work in a well ventilated and lit repair shops or some will work in the pits at a
racetrack but, these locations can be very Tumultuous. I hope to be working in the pits. Technicians
work full time hours and overtime is common. Technicians can work in many urban areas, including
dealerships, and independent shops. Automotive technicians must first, show up a few minutes early.
In these ten minutes or so, they should unlock their toolbox, clean their work bay and tools, and check
their emails if necessary. Then they should open up the shop, and work on any unfinished projects.
Throughout the day, more work may show up. Depending on the severity of the work, it should either
be set aside until there is time or should be done immediately to get the vehicle back to the customer.
Another job of a technician is to explain the problem, the work to be done, and the cost to the
customer. Customers could easily overreact over a problem that, to the technician, seem simple. It is
the technician s job to help the customer understand the simplicity of

Blue Zone Research Paper
Not only is it important to have healthy friends and family, but it s important to keep in touch with
them. Blue zones are areas around the world where it isn t uncommon for people to live past 100.
These areas include Sardinia, Italy; Ikaria, Greece; Okinawa, Japan; Nicoya, Costa Rica; and Loma
Linda, California. Researchers around the world have found similarities between the blue zones with
the biggest similarities being diet and socialization. Almost all centenarians (people who live over
100) have set family as their biggest priorities. Family members talk to each other almost every day,
take care of one another, and generally love each other. Nursing homes do not exist in blue zones
because people are expected to take care of the elderly. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In the future, doctors will be able to expand on this with the growing field of proteomics. Proteomics
is the study of all the proteins that can be found in a cell and, therefore, an organism. Amino acids are
the chemical units of proteins and are considered to be the building blocks of life. They are important
in almost every function a cell does within itself and the entire organism. Blood circulates through our
entire bodies which means the proteins in our blood have reflected everything that is happening in the
human body. This means an infection in a person s foot, can be seen through the proteins in blood
drawn from the arm. The potential power of proteomics is mind blowing. With proteomics, doctors
can find any disease, disorder, or any other problem just by examining a single drop of blood. Instead
of running dozens of different tests to find out what is wrong with someone, all a doctor has to do is
draw the patient s blood, send it to the lab, and wait for the results (Agus 110 112). This will save a lot
of time and money for the patient as well as helping him/her improve her medical condition.
Hopefully, in the years to come, scientists and doctors can finally combine the fields of proteomics
and medicine for the benefit of billions of people around the

Advantages And Disadvantages Of An Analog Signal
An analog signal is a continuous signal in which the time varying signal is a representation of some
other time varying quantity i.e. in an audio signal, the instantaneous voltage of the signal varies with
the pressure of the sound waves
Analog signal processing is a type of signal processing conducted on which continuous analog signals
by some analog means
The difference between the analog and digital signal processing is that analog signal has continuous
values unlike the digital which has discrete values. Now a days, signal processing plays an important
role in many of applications. The mostly used physical quantities which represent analog quantities
are current, voltage or charge. These quantities are affected by certain external forces ... Show more

As the signal is transmitted over long distances, the noise become dominant. The effects of noise
create signal loss and variation. It is not possible to recover.
Distortion in Analog Signal Defined to be the change of shape in signal sent from the source to the
destination which is due to the addition of noise in our required signal.
Thermal Noise Noise due to random motion of electrons cause thermal noise. Due to this noise signal
s shape distorted.
Attenuation is loss of energy in the signal as it is transmitted from the one point to other point. This
occurs in case the signal has to be sent over a long distance. To remove this effect we use amplifiers
which amplify the signal. But there is a problem that when we amplify the given signal the noise also
gets amplified.
Digital signal processing is the numerical manipulation of signals, usually with the measure, filter,
produce in continuous analog signals. It is characterized by the use of digital signal to represent these
signals as discrete time and frequency, or other discrete domain signals in the form of a sequence of
numbers to permit the digital processing of these

different types of bullying and they can affect people in many different ways that can be very harmful
to kids that do not know how to handle it. Kids that do not know how to handle getting bullied often
become depressed or even suicidal. Why do kids get bullied, and why do kids bully other kids?
Bullying is a repeated aggressive behavior where one person is in a position of power to harm or
abuse someone else. There are three main characteristics when incidents occur with bullying. One of
the characteristics of bullying is intentional; behavior is an aggressive and deliberate attempt to hurt
someone. A second characteristic involves the repeated aggressive actions, which occur over time to
the same target or group of targets. The third characteristic involves a power imbalance where the
person bullying has more power over the target being bullied ( What is bullying? 1). The four types of

Forbidden Love In Shakespeare s Romeo And Juliet Still...
How relevant can a play written over 400 years ago be in today s society? Romeo and Juliet is a play
written by William Shakespeare around 1595. It tells the story of an old feud between the house of
Capulet and the house of Montague. This feud could only be broken by the forbidden love and death
of their children. So, because of the forbidden love, instability in youth, and pointless feuding, the
story of Romeo and Juliet is actually really relevant in today s society.
Frist of all, forbidden Loves can be caused by many different issues. For example, forbidden love can
be caused by differences in race, religion, social standing, gender preference, or in the case of Romeo
and Juliet, family feuding. As a result, people, especially teens, ... Show more content on

For instance, the prologue of Romeo and Juliet says, From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean. From forth the fatal loins of these two foes A pair of star
crossed lovers take their life, Whose misadventured piteous overthrows Doth with their death bury
their parents strife. Here the writer proves, that the fighting between these two families only ended by
the tragic suicide of their children. As a result, pointless feuding usually leads to revenge. For
instance, according to the telegraph Killings of black men by US police officers lead to revenge
shootings across America . This is similar to when Romeo avenges Mercutio by killing Tybalt. In any
event, pointless feuds are a terrible idea that usually ends in tragedy!
It s easy to see how Romeo and Juliet are still relevant in today s society. Of course, it may be true that
the language is quite confusing, it doesn t change the meaning of their words. Moreover, just because
arranged marriages are not a normal practice in America doesn t mean the larger issues presented in
Shakespeare s tragic tale are not. So, from the forbidden love to the instability in youth to feuding, this
400 plus year old play is still relevant in today s society. In fact, considering our track record, I m
willing to bet it always will

Sociology Deviant Essay
Being Deviant for a Day In this project I decided to be over talkative in the sense that whenever
someone spoke to me and asked how I was doing or what was new in my life, I would go above and
beyond what they probably were expecting me to do so. So for me being a deviant in this way made
perfect sense because I normally don t talk much about myself, more of a listener than anything. I
started everything out by going about my normal day, errands and going to my college classes. So I
went to Wal Mart of all places and not even five minutes into my shopping there I ran into two friends
that I haven t seen in a long time, and of course they said, So how have you been? Anything new

what I said about being pregnant again they gave me encouraging words that since I m doing so well
with my daughter now that I will do even better with my son when he arrives. Also that I m a great
mother and even though yes it is stressful I will make it through it all. As for how I felt during this
whole experiment I just didn t feel right, as in the sense that I normally don t speak that much about
myself at all. So for me being a deviant in this way made perfect sense because I normally I am more

behavior off. It was hard for me to keep a straight face, I kept laughing cause it just not me to talk so
much. It was pretty funny that I acted so much like someone else. But later on I noticed that it was
nice to do something different, it gave me a whole new perspective on things. Made me think about
how I am with my friends when they are talking to me. Made me more aware of how I respond not
only verbally but also non verbally, because as I experienced it was crucial how I perceived how
everyone reacted to me. I learned that the

Deaf Perceptions Of The Deaf
Deaf Perceptions of Animacy
Deaf culture has long been misunderstood and misrepresented within America, in part due to the
significant language barrier between the American Deaf and their hearing counterparts. Though it is
often thought to be nothing more than an elevated form of charades, American Sign Language (ASL)
is a language like any other not only with its own grammatical syntax, phonology, and morphology,
but also in its compliance to the Sapir Whorf hypothesis. Created by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee
Whorf, the hypothesis exists in two degrees: weak and strong. The former claims that language shapes
our thoughts, and thus our culture, while the latter version claims that language not only shapes our
thoughts and our culture, it creates them. Though there is debate surrounding the degree to which the
hypothesis extends, it is undoubtable that it is applicable to Deaf culture and its use of ASL as a first
language in prelingually Deaf individuals. Using the Sapir Whorf hypothesis as its theoretical
framework, this research proposes to investigate how the absence of copular verbs within ASL shapes
Deaf perception of animacy and how such perceptions manifest within Deaf culture.
Language was long thought to be a passageway passagewayfor thought; a go between that allowed
one to translate their pre existing ideas into a communicable form via sounds, writing, and gesture
(Cultural Encounters). However, this understanding shifted upon the introduction of the Sapir Whorf

Rational In Candide
Conflict Between the Rational and the Actual
In Candide, Voltaire elicits the conflicts between the rational and the actual by providing a sarcastic
distortion of optimism. Voltaire uses Pangloss and a foil character, Martin, to ridicule the literal
meaning in Leibniz s philosophy that everything is for the best . Voltaire supports the idea that
optimism restrains characters, such as Pangloss, from making logical choices of the world around
them and from taking other stances to prevent unfavorable situations. Whereas Voltaire deciphers the
conflicts between the rational and the actual by poking fun of Leibniz s philosophy, Dostoevsky does
the same but instead by concluding that because of hyperconscious, there is not much one can ... Show

However, instead of mocking the idea of optimism and trying to instill becoming far more realistic to
get out of situations such as those that Pangloss went through , the underground man decides to
remain motionless. The Underground man believes that Suffering is the sole origin of consciousness
(Dostoevsky); In other words the pain that one feels when dealing with reality leads to consciousness
and then hyperconsciousness. The Underground Man s hyperconsciousness leads him to thinks that
there are too many causes and that one cannot act on primary causes. He believed that an intelligent
man cannot become anything seriously and it is only the fool who becomes anything (Dostoevsky 11).
Because of so many primary causes the Underground man could not make up his mind and make one
decision, so his hyperconsciousness led to conscious inertia where instead he was sitting with the
hands folded [doing nothing] (Dostoevsky 10). Voltaire supports a more pessimistic point of view
where instead of letting a man die because God meant for it to be that way, to act more realistic. On
the other hand, Dostoevsky does not act, not for the sole purpose of being lazy or being optimistic but
rather because he does not know whether to choose left or right since he is overwhelmed with so much
consciousness. Both literary works by Voltaire and Dostoevsky differ in the sense that Voltaire is

Stiglitz Business Report
The Current Rules
In his report, Stiglitz s clearly shows his disapproval for our current economic rules by discussing
numerous economically related areas that he takes issue with. Although this report covers a great deal
of topics, the two that I found most relevant to highlight are low taxation on the wealthy and worker
suppression. Stiglitz sees the low taxation of the rich as a way for the wealthiest to gain at everyone
else s expense. He argues that not only has lowering tax rates for the rich shrunk the overall tax pool
but it has also increasingly placed the burden onto the backs of the lower and middle classes in order
to keep important social programs going. Worker suppression is also a trend that Stiglitz takes issue
with. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Currently, they simply have to rehire the worker if a violation is found and even that can take up to
three years to be ruled on.
Analysis
I found Stiglitz s argument to be very persuasive especially in the areas of rebalancing the tax and
transfer system and empowering workers. Our economy is certainly top heavy and the trickle down
economics of the past 40 years have failed to trickle down effectively. Considering, as Stiglitz brings
up, that the top marginal tax rate has never risen above 40 percent in the last 40 years all though it was
previously 70 percent, you would assume that if trickle down economics worked we would certainly
be reaping its rewards by now. However, as Stiglitz states there is no evidence that lower tax rates
have led to increased growth. In fact, a direct correlation between cutting marginal tax rates and
increasing inequality has been proven.Consequently, Stiglitz s proposal to increase tax rates on the
highest bracket by 5 percent seems completely justified especially considering that it would have the
power to fund free college education for all. His plan to tax corporations on global profits is also
justified as current rules encourage companies to spend their money elsewhere and as a result the US
economy is weakened. One of the most important aspects of an economy with low inequality is that
workers at every level of the hierarchy have a fair amount of power

Beethoven Essay
The rise of Ludwig van Beethoven into the rank of history s greatest composers was paralleled by and
in some ways a consequence of his own personal tragedy and despair.
Beethoven s family was of the Flemish origin. His mother, Maria Magdalena, died after a long illness
when Beethoven was only 17. He was not the only child in this family though. He had 2 brothers and
1 sister, both to which were disorganized and unruly. His family was always in constant need of funds.
Beethoven showed his extraordinary musical talent at an early age. His father hoped he could induce
his child s development and make him more like Mozart, and possibly bring in some money for the
family which was desperately in need.
As a child, Beethoven never was too ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He began to study with other teachers and soon became very popular in Vienna. Some were pleased
with his performances, but others were embarrassed by his arrogance and bad manners.
In the late 1790 s, Beethoven discovered an increasing buzzing and humming in his ears and it sent
him into panic, searching for a cure. In 1802, he wrote a letter to his brother describing his anguish.
He asked his brother to read the letter at the funeral. His suffering had a brief respite when he soon fell
in love with a young countess, and dedicated a song to her called Moonlight Sonata . Even after this,
she did not marry Beethoven.
By October 1802, he had written the Heiligenstadt Testament confessing his deafness, and suicidal
considerations.
By about 1800, Beethoven was mastering the Viennese High Classic style. Although Mozart had first
perfected the style, Beethoven did extend it to some degree. Having displayed a wide range of his
piano writing, he was also beginning to forge a new voice for the violin.
Beethoven s deafness landed him into a major cycle of depression. In his Testament, he reveals his
malaise that was sending him to the edge of despair. He speaks of suicide in the same breath as a
reluctance to die. Having searched vainly for a

aspirations. It is my goal to help make a difference in people s lives, and in their families lives,

learned about all different types of disabilities, what it s like to have these disabilities, how to help
students cope with their disabilities, and how schools are supposed to accommodate the student. The
class was such an eye opener on how students with disabilities live and how challenging school can be
for them. In taking the prerequisite courses, I discovered a love for studying how the body works, not
only physically, but emotionally and mentally. In this upcoming semester, Spring of 2017, I am
registered to take an American Sign Language class. Learning sign language will undoubtedly be
beneficial to know when working with people who have disabilities. It will provide me with skills to
work with clients with communication issues. For instance, if I have a client who is nonverbal, I can
teach them a way to communicate with others. I am a part of a club on campus that is heavily involved

empire. However, his true

The fuming elephant in a black suit behind the media is a political representation of the republican
party and their growing frustration for unfair treatment as far as garnering media attention. The
placement of Donald Trump directly oppose to the republican party reveals that Trump is not an
acceptable Republican candidate as symbolized by him being on the opposite side of the elephant.
Furthermore, in the cartoon, the color choice also convey a symbolic message to the viewers. For
instance, the color light violet represents inferiority and insignificance (Colour Affect). the elephant is
illustrated light violet as almost as he is bruised to show how he is unable to captivate the media s
attention. The color yellow like the taxicab dominates the picture to grab the attention of the viewers
and to reveal the center of the issue, which in this case is the media. Symbols are used to questions the
media s ethical stand and Donald Trump s political approach. Why is the media focused too much on
Trump s sensational tenets instead of questioning his economic plans and policies? The elephant s
displeasure and the media s excessive coverages unrelated to politics symbolize the political tension
and the media s ethical downfall. Rather than inquiring Trump about his future plans, the mass media
is more interested in Donald Trump disrespectful and misogynistic remarks. The media s improper
actions represent their loss of moral integrity and their crave for more controversial statements. In
Hindu culture, the sun symbolizes knowledge, truth, influence, and stability (Hinduwebsite). With this
in mind, the yellow curved text bubble around the mass media resembles the sun, which implies that

  • 3. Scapegoats In Germany Overlooked Once, Adolf Hitler said, It s not the truth that matters, but victory. Obviously, this quote shows that Hitler s mindset was directed towards winning, and not his moral values. He made false accusations about the innocent Jews, killing over six million of them. These false accusations were simple, repeated, and, eventually, people believed it. The rise of Hitler and the Nazi Party affected how people viewed the Jews at the time. To begin, events in Adolf Hitler s life lead to his viewpoints and affiliations. Secondly, the creation of the Nazi Party was critical to the formation of Germany s point of view. For Instance, the Germans thought that the Jews had killed Christ and were responsible for large unfortunate events in Germany. These accusations had always been floating around, and the Nazi Party had only increased Jewish hate, however, Jewish antisemitism and their use as scapegoats had always been around. For example, during the Black Death, the Jews were blamed for poisoned the wells and being immune to the Black Death; unfortunately, the scapegoating of Jews continued, changing people s ideas about the religion of Judaism. • 4. Voting Rights In America In my opinion, each citizen has a civic and moral duty to vote. It is also a requirement, a responsibility, an obligation. It s part of a bigger picture. I may speak passionately about voting rights, that s only because as a naturalized citizen, I believe that I have been given this privilege. For me, it is certainly an honor to be able to exercise my free will to vote in this country. Conversely, being able to vote reminds me of how privileged I am in comparison to other countries, whose citizens have no freedom and/or a choice. This country certainly has come a long way, paving the way for all its citizens to be able to vote, when not so long ago, that few of America s inhabitants could not participate in elections: among the excluded were ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Andy escapes by making a hole through the wall over a twenty year period and then during a stormy night, Andy breaks the sewage pipe by using a piece of concreate while it is masked by the sound of thunder. Escape is displayed very comprehensively through film techniques and characterization. When Andy escaped through the sewers and ended in the river it felt like as if he was baptised because he escaped from the claustrophobic confines of Shawshank and he also escaped the corruption and money laundering as the warden had forced him to book his laundering schemes otherwise he would make it hell for him. The major film technique that was involved in this scene was when Andy was breaking the pipe, the camera was facing up towards him and then switch to the lightning strike through the window, then quickly switch to Andy crashing the piece of concrete against the pipe. This film technique gave the effect of intensity and made the audience be on the edge of their seats. This scene if very significant to the story because this when Andy literally escapes from Shawshank and the themes displayed in the scene displays how much defiance and hope Andy really had. In conclusion, Shawshank Redemption used characterization and film techniques to display Escape through Andy and the people around successfully. During the Age of Discovery, most nations had absolute monarchs, and thus the glory received from expeditions abroad would directly go to the monarch, rather than to the nation itself. This is evidenced by the extravagant palaces of Versailles and el Escorial, which were constructed using the profits from the Age of Discovery. Furthermore, many European nations had impoverished lower classes, that only suffered while the extravagant monarchs indulged in the new income from overseas trade. In contrast, during the nineteenth century and the Age of New Imperialism, the glory received from conquest would increase the nationalism of the entire country. This patriotic fervor gripped nations and was the cause of both unification and warfare. Specifically, this nationalism and glory was used by King Charles X of France who gained more power by increasing the patriotism of his people. Despite his absolutist rule, the people of France did not rebel, as they were proud of their nation s African expansion. • 10. Top-Down Influences On Spoken Word Recognition Discuss the evidence for top down influences on spoken word recognition. What is the best way of accounting for these effects? Introduction One fundamental issue in the study of spoken word recognition is concerned with how and when bottom up information (i.e., raw acoustic input) is integrated with top down knowledge (i.e., lexical, morpho syntactic and semantic information) when processing speech, if at all. Interactive accounts, represented by the TRACE model, acknowledge top down flow of information as one essential route within its theoretical portrait of a bi directional spread of activation when processing spoken words, as in contrast to autonomous ones, such as the SHORTLIST B model, which endorse a unidirectional bottom up approach. The paper discussed both positive and negative empirical evidence for top down effects in speech perception following a chronological order in line with two influential theoretical accounts (i.e., Interactive versus Autonomous) to shed light on a more comprehensive understanding of spoken word recognition. In particular, this discussion aims to argue that the role for top down influences on spoken word could be better consolidated empirically, only when the idea of top down flow is more rigorously conceptualized. Early evidence One long running approach to investigate how does higher level information influence speech perception focuses on testing if lexical knowledge influences phoneme perception through top down feedback, or ... • 12. Dinosaur Art Essay The Significance of Dinosaur Art Dinosaurs are creatures that seem to fascinate humans, since all we have left are their fossils. Although, through art, their bodies can be put back together and we have a better sense of what they looked like. The problem with art is that pictures can sometimes be disproportionate, unrealistic, or even made up. Young children who learn about dinosaurs may think that they are actually different colors and can talk for example. This is why it is important to make dinosaur art as realistic as possible and more informative. In an article titled, Do They Really Look Like That? Besides paying attention to new discoveries, paleo artists must notice how information is interpreted by different people. Paleo artist John Sibbick states that a bunch of people could have the same scientific information and fossil evidence in front of them, but how they all interpret it is very different. Everyone has a different artistic style, but the important thing is that their pictures clearly depict dinosaurs in an accurate environment with the dinosaurs realistic themselves. Through the years, paleo art has increased greatly, due to an increase in scientific findings and information being confirmed. The understanding of dinosaurs has increased and the art has changed to reflect that , said Sloan (2). One step to an increase in dinosaur understanding and art was in the 1980 s. Paleontologist Robert Bakker came up with a theory that dinosaurs were warm blooded. He thought that fossils looked more like warm blooded bones. Eventually his theory was accepted all over. This had a big impact on dinosaur art and then it encountered a drastic change. Instead of dinosaurs standing around and doing nothing but eating, they were now running and hunting their prey. The art changed from still life to a more action filled art, which appealed to more people and made the lives of dinosaurs seem more complicated than originally believed. The prisoners adapted to the difficult living in the camps but once they were back in society they had a difficult time readjusting as not to be maladaptive (Frankl 135). During the 50 s and 60 s doctors could legally only treat the somatic symptoms of camp survivors, although they knew of the camp syndrome that plagued their patients psychologically. During this time there was also no field of specialization for post traumatic stress syndrome or any scientific articles published about the syndrome. Beginning in 1992 and previously as a branch of Memorial, an organization called Compassion was formed to remedy postponed psychosomatic consequences of torture, enforced by age, pathology, and unfavorable living conditions. Survivors also felt it was safer to speak of the previously taboo subject of the Gulags after the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union. Between 1992 and 1997, four million applications were filed for rehabilitation and yet only 1.5 million were granted (Frierson and Vilensky 303). What Is Erikson s Theory Of Spiritual Formation SPIRITUAL FORMATION THROUGHOUT THE LIFESPAN BY SOMMER BARNES LIBERTY UNIVERSITY ONLINE Abstract In this research paper, I will try to illustrate my hypothesis of spiritual formation throughout the lifespan by using my interpretation of a collection of theories. The theories I will refer to include Piaget s Cognitive Development Theory, Erikson s Psychosocial Theory, and Kohlberg s Development of Moral Reasoning Theory. In Piaget s Theory of Cognitive Development, he develops a theory of cognitive development that occurs in stages from persons under two years of age through age 14. Erikson advises that crises are never completely resolved and can re emerge later in life, if left unresolve. Deaf Perceptions Of The Deaf Deaf Perceptions of Animacy Deaf culture has long been misunderstood and misrepresented within America, in part due to the significant language barrier between the American Deaf and their hearing counterparts. Though it is often thought to be nothing more than an elevated form of charades, American Sign Language (ASL) is a language like any other not only with its own grammatical syntax, phonology, and morphology, but also in its compliance to the Sapir Whorf hypothesis. Created by Edward Sapir and Benjamin Lee Whorf, the hypothesis exists in two degrees: weak and strong. The former claims that language shapes our thoughts, and thus our culture, while the latter version claims that language not only shapes our thoughts and our culture, it creates them. Though there is debate surrounding the degree to which the hypothesis extends, it is undoubtable that it is applicable to Deaf culture and its use of ASL as a first language in prelingually Deaf individuals. Using the Sapir Whorf hypothesis as its theoretical framework, this research proposes to investigate how the absence of copular verbs within ASL shapes Deaf perception of animacy and how such perceptions manifest within Deaf culture. Voltaire supports the idea that optimism restrains characters, such as Pangloss, from making logical choices of the world around them and from taking other stances to prevent unfavorable situations. Stiglitz sees the low taxation of the rich as a way for the wealthiest to gain at everyone else s expense. Our economy is certainly top heavy and the trickle down economics of the past 40 years have failed to trickle down effectively. Considering, as Stiglitz brings up, that the top marginal tax rate has never risen above 40 percent in the last 40 years all though it was previously 70 percent, you would assume that if trickle down economics worked we would certainly be reaping its rewards by now. However, as Stiglitz states there is no evidence that lower tax rates have led to increased growth. In fact, a direct correlation between cutting marginal tax rates and increasing inequality has been proven.Consequently, Stiglitz s proposal to increase tax rates on the highest bracket by 5 percent seems completely justified especially considering that it would have the power to fund free college education for all.
