re:Invent re:Cap - Big Data & IoT at Any ScaleAdrian Hornsby
This session covers the most recent Big Data & IoT announcements at re:Invent. Learn about trends and use cases for understanding your data and implementing an Internet of Things (IoT) project. Hear about how AWS customers are using AWS IoT to connect their devices to the cloud and solve business challenges with IoT.
Independent of the source of data, the integration of event streams into an Enterprise Architecture gets more and more important in the world of sensors, social media streams and Internet of Things. Events have to be accepted quickly and reliably, they have to be distributed and analysed, often with many consumers or systems interested in all or part of the events. Dependent on the size and quantity of such events, this can quickly be in the range of Big Data. How can we efficiently collect and transmit these events? How can we make sure that we can always report over historical events? How can these new events be integrated into traditional infrastructure and application landscape?
Starting with a product and technology neutral reference architecture, we will then present different solutions using Open Source frameworks and the Oracle Stack both for on premises as well as the cloud.
Integrating AI into IoT networks is becoming a prerequisite for success in today’s data-driven digital ecosystems. The only way to keep up with IoT-generated data and gain the hidden insights it holds is using AI as the catalyst of IoT. Join this webinar to understand how IoT and AI may work together.

Phoenix Data Conference - Big Data Analytics for IoT 11/4/17Mark Goldstein
“Big Data for IoT: Analytics from Descriptive to Predictive to Prescriptive” was presented to the Phoenix Data Conference on 11/4/17 at Grand Canyon University.
As the Internet of Things (IoT) floods data lakes and fills data oceans with sensor and real-world data, analytic tools and real-time responsiveness will require improved platforms and applications to deal with the data flow and move from descriptive to predictive to prescriptive analysis and outcomes.
Presentation at the 2016 IIOT Challenges and Opportunities Workshop.
The next wave of Industrial Internet applications will connect machines and devices together into functioning, intelligent systems with capabilities beyond anything possible today. These systems fundamentally depend on connectivity and information exchange to derive knowledge and make "smart decisions". They require a much higher level of reliability and security than "Consumer" IoT applications. OMG's Data-Distribution Service for Real-Time Systems (DDS) is the premier open middleware standard directly addressing publish-subscribe communications for Industrial IoT applications. It provides a protocol that meets the demanding security, scalability, performance, and Quality of Service requirements of IIoT applications spanning connected machines, enterprise systems, and mobile devices. This presentation will use concrete use cases to introduce DDS and examine why energy, advanced medical, asset-tracking, transportation, and military systems choose to base their designs on DDS.

Securing your Kubernetes cluster_ a step-by-step guide to success !KatiaHIMEUR1
Today, after several years of existence, an extremely active community and an ultra-dynamic ecosystem, Kubernetes has established itself as the de facto standard in container orchestration. Thanks to a wide range of managed services, it has never been so easy to set up a ready-to-use Kubernetes cluster.
However, this ease of use means that the subject of security in Kubernetes is often left for later, or even neglected. This exposes companies to significant risks.
In this talk, I'll show you step-by-step how to secure your Kubernetes cluster for greater peace of mind and reliability.
Epistemic Interaction - tuning interfaces to provide information for AI supportAlan Dix
Paper presented at SYNERGY workshop at AVI 2024, Genoa, Italy. 3rd June 2024
https://alandix.com/academic/papers/synergy2024-epistemic/
As machine learning integrates deeper into human-computer interactions, the concept of epistemic interaction emerges, aiming to refine these interactions to enhance system adaptability. This approach encourages minor, intentional adjustments in user behaviour to enrich the data available for system learning. This paper introduces epistemic interaction within the context of human-system communication, illustrating how deliberate interaction design can improve system understanding and adaptation. Through concrete examples, we demonstrate the potential of epistemic interaction to significantly advance human-computer interaction by leveraging intuitive human communication strategies to inform system design and functionality, offering a novel pathway for enriching user-system engagements.

Volume Machine-generated data is produced in much larger quantities. For instance, a single jet engine can generate 10TB of data in 30 minutes. With more airline flights per day, the daily volume of just this single data source runs into the Petabytes. Smart meters and heavy industrial equipment like oil refineries and drilling rigs generate similar data volumes, compounding the problem Twitter produces 175 million tweets per dayVelocity Social media data streams – produce a large influx of opinions and relationships valuable to customer relationship management. Even at 140 characters per tweet, the high velocity (or frequency) of Twitter data ensures large volumes (over 8 TB per day) Wal-Mart is logging one million transactions per hourVariety Traditional data formats tend to be relatively well described and change slowly. As new services are added, new sensors deployed, or new marketing campaigns executed, new data types are needed to capture the resultant informationFacebook creates over 30 billion pieces of content ranging from web links, news, blogs, photos etc.Value The economic value of different data varies significantly. Typically there is good information hidden amongst a larger body of non-traditional data; the challenge is identifying what is valuable and then transforming and extracting that data for analysis.
The smart card is a unified identity card with multiple applications which helps to create a technology-facilitated environmentPersonal intrusion can be kept to a minimum while providing increased security. Increase customer satisfaction, reduction of cash and change theftsOffers increased security by using a single card system rather than using several cards across a development.Future personalized services can be delivered depending on the identity and preferences stored by the smart card. The ownership of Smart Card functionality lies with the security team who owns and manages the access control system. This team then shares configuration responsibility with the facilities management system upon configuration to gain access to various systems such as elevators, HVAC, power, lighting and other amenities in the building.
What will it take to create these cities/communities… new visionary leadership & the creation of New Business Models.Imagine the huge opportunity for new services. Technology will be the key enabler.Only 2% of infrastructure spend – 2% of a trillion dollars is spent on technology – even an increase of 1%? To enable this we should together drive:Visionary leadership is key – finding people with similar mindsets, passion and vision for the future…that’s really key.Global open standards – this is what we do! We did it 25 years ago with the internet…bringing together different protocols and making them all work together. That’s not something just anyone can do.Smart regulation – we need leaders to step up….LEED certification….give benefits to people who implementPublic private partnerships – this has been key to our success so far.And a New ecosystem – working with developers, people like Schneider ElectricBut it takes all five of these factors…without one, it changes completely.
