Session: Using Technology to Engage K-6 Students in the New
         Science Standards
Time: June 27, 2:00 – 3:00pm
Room: Champaign

Goals of the workshop
Participants will acquire an understanding of the importance of
integrating STEM concepts into the elementary science
curriculum. They will investigate STEM activities that integrate
with the new Ohio Standards for Science. They will be familiar
with the engineering design process and know how to use it as a
problem solving tool with students. They will learn how to create a
STEM lesson.

Integrated STEM activities to be explored
   o Paper engineering (linkages)
   o Plastic meat tray sail cars
   o Solar cookers

Basic STEM concepts
  1. Defining STEM, engineering, technology and technological
     literacy
  2. An integrated STEM approach benefits both learning and
     teaching methods
  3. The technological design process as a problem solving tool
  4. Creating and teaching an integrated lesson is easy and
     effective in an elementary curriculum.

JUNE 27, 2 – 3 PM
  • Pre-workshop assessment, introduction
  • Goals of the course, syllabus
• Define STEM
  • Discuss value of technological literacy to our society,
    economy, students.
  • Introduce a design brief
  • Hands-on activity: paper linkages
  • What is a STEM lesson?
  • Introduce the technological design process as a problem
    solving tool
  • Integrated activity: sail cars
  • Integrated activity: solar cookers
  • Teaching an integrated STEM lesson
  • Debriefing
  • Post-workshop assessment

Using Technology to Engage K-6 Students in the New Science Standards

Battelle for Kids Connect for Success Session: Using Technology to Engage K-6 Students in the New Science Standards Time: June 27, 2:00 – 3:00pm Room: Champaign Presenter: Bob Claymier Goals of the workshop Participants will acquire an understanding of the importance of integrating STEM concepts into the elementary science curriculum. They will investigate STEM activities that integrate with the new Ohio Standards for Science. They will be familiar with the engineering design process and know how to use it as a problem solving tool with students. They will learn how to create a STEM lesson. Integrated STEM activities to be explored o Paper engineering (linkages) o Plastic meat tray sail cars o Solar cookers Basic STEM concepts 1. Defining STEM, engineering, technology and technological literacy 2. An integrated STEM approach benefits both learning and teaching methods 3. The technological design process as a problem solving tool 4. Creating and teaching an integrated lesson is easy and effective in an elementary curriculum.
