Sustainable Development in the Mining Industry - presentation at QCFI BhilaiPRABHASH GOKARN
Mining is the primary method of extraction of minerals needed by man.
The main constraint to sustainability in mining stems from the increasing pollution generated by the extraction process and the large consumption of resources (mostly energy and water) needed in refining of the minerals.
Mining operations are associated with a range of environmental and social impacts, as well as the non-renewable nature of many mined resources. Thus the sustainability of this industry and the efficient use of its resources for development remain crucial.
There is a growing realization globally of the importance of strong and effective legal and regulatory frameworks, policies and practices for the mining sector that deliver economic and social benefits.
It is possible for mining to contribute to sustainable development through:
• Enhancing the benefits while mitigating the negative impacts both when mining is taking place and subsequently as well (by scientific mine closure)
• Improving stakeholder participation in the management of the resources including local and indigenous communities
• Addressing the environmental, economic, health and social impacts and benefits of mining throughout their life cycle, including workers' health and safety.
There must be a balance between contrasting claims of sustainability for the future versus current economic benefit from mining. We must :
• Stay within the capacity of ecosystems to absorb change.
• Provide an adequate standard of living for those in the area of influence.
• Create wealth for development of society & provide for the development of advanced technology.
• Develop systems of governance which promote and sustain these goals.

CSR-Zero Sum, Charity or Strategic OpportunityWayne Dunn
#CSR: #Strategic? or Zero Sum? Strategic aligns interests and creates value. Zero Sum distributes value. Which are you practicing? #SDGs # Globalgoals
Business is an engine that creates value. So, what does that have to do with CSR?
Traditional, philanthropic and charity-centric approaches to CSR focus on allocating some of that value to society and the rest to shareholders. A zero-sum game where for one party to get more the other party must get less.

Enterprise Excellence is Inclusive Excellence.pdfKaiNexus
Enterprise excellence and inclusive excellence are closely linked, and real-world challenges have shown that both are essential to the success of any organization. To achieve enterprise excellence, organizations must focus on improving their operations and processes while creating an inclusive environment that engages everyone. In this interactive session, the facilitator will highlight commonly established business practices and how they limit our ability to engage everyone every day. More importantly, though, participants will likely gain increased awareness of what we can do differently to maximize enterprise excellence through deliberate inclusion.
What is Enterprise Excellence?
Enterprise Excellence is a holistic approach that's aimed at achieving world-class performance across all aspects of the organization.
What might I learn?
A way to engage all in creating Inclusive Excellence. Lessons from the US military and their parallels to the story of Harry Potter. How belt systems and CI teams can destroy inclusive practices. How leadership language invites people to the party. There are three things leaders can do to engage everyone every day: maximizing psychological safety to create environments where folks learn, contribute, and challenge the status quo.
Who might benefit? Anyone and everyone leading folks from the shop floor to top floor.

Why is CSR happening?
Globalized world is demanding more of
business…

remote local issues direct to television screens
Proliferation of NGOs and CBOs – direct, well
organized and financed support to communities
Internet and other communications innovations –

CSR and Development
Quotes from the World Summit
UN Secretary General Kofi Annan “lasting and effective
answers can only be found if business – working together with
other actors including government and civil society– is fully
engaged ”
Prime Minister Chretien (Canada) “Building creative and
innovative partnerships to promote sustainable development is a
defining theme of our global agenda”
EU President/ Prime Minister of Denmark Anders Fogh
Rasmussen, “The business sector has a very important role to
play in sustainable development. To pursue this goal, we must all
work together; governments, the business sector and civil society.
I look forward to further cooperation between the EU and private
business.”

The Mining World Has Changed
• “We are determined to provide multi-skilling to
workers and assist them to cope with
retrenchments. This is a must and not a choice
for industry”
• “It is important for mining to ensure that
economic benefits accrue to society as a whole
and more specifically to communities affected
by mining . . . The social environment has not,
in my opinion, been adequately addressed in
the past”
Hon. Phumizile Mlambo-Ngcuka

Often CSR is approached by industry, communities and government without a clear framework or plan, or a common understanding of what it involves and hopes to achieve Little is done to elaborate specific objectives, making it difficult to measure results and to know what, if any progress has been made. As a result, progress or success is often measured in terms of dollars spent, without considering the impact of those dollars in meeting CSR objectives. Often spending has little sustainable impact
