The Octopus
At the turn of the century, American readers were interested only in stories with happy endings, where
goodness was praised and evil was punished. They did not particularly care if that was a false
interpretation of the way life really was. When men such as Frank Norris, the author of The Octopus,
wrote angrily of the injustices and poverty to be found in America, readers turned away. The Octopus
made them change their minds. The course of the novel and the reality of its characters held the
readers attention. It is so powerful a book that people had to care about the wheat growers, almost
against their wishes.
The impact did not end in the early twentieth century, but continues its legacy into the new
millenium. The Octopus, depicts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Their solution to the crisis was to keep magnifying it, until it ruined the farmers. Once the railroad
raised the price for the land, the farmers could not afford to buy. They proceeded to create dummy
buyers, fictitious settlers who they created to come in and buy the land. Soon after Delany, a ranch
worker was fired, the railroad used him to act as a dummy buyer and buy the land.
There was no way Delany could actually afforded to buy the land on his own; he was obviously acting
as the railroad s pawn, sent to aggravate the ranchers who leased farms from the railroad. The railroad
also tampered with other types of characters in the story. Dyke was fired from his job at the railroad
after he refused to work for the rates of a man doing half the work he was doing. Then after Dyke
mortgaged his land to the railroad, they raised the rates on the crop he was producing. They drove him
to poverty and when he tried to take back what they had stolen from him by robbing money from one
of their trains, they had him thrown in jail for life.
This is another example of how Norris evinces the railroads unethical treatment of the common man
in California at the time.Shelgrim, the executive of the P. and S.W. tried to justify the railroad s
actions, and in a way, pass on the responsibility, by calling the railroad a force, something that he had
no control over. In the novel, he compared this force to the way that wheat was

The International Standards Organization ( Iso )
The International Standards Organization (ISO) produces guidelines for organizations to use as a
quality management tool. ISO functions as an independent organization with no governmental ties,
allowing themselves to create guidelines that are not catered more specifically to one country than
another. One hundred and sixty two national standards bodies make up its membership and they help
supply experts who will share knowledge and develop international standards. These voluntary,
market relevant, and consensus based standards are produced as a result of the identification of a
global need and are compiled through the work of international experts working in conjunction with
one another. In 1987, the first version of ISO guidelines was released. It was heavily based on the
older UK Standard BS 5750 with three kinds of quality management systems. An organization would
select one of these systems by evaluating the scope of their activities (The British Assessment
Bureau). ISO 9001:1987 Model for quality assurance in design, development, productions,
installation, and servicing was developed for companies and organizations who dealt with creating
new products. The 9002 version, Model for quality assurance in production, installation, and servicing
was nearly identical to ISO 9001 with the exception of not dealing with new product creation. ISO
9003:1987 Model for quality assurance in final inspection and test only detailed the inspection of the
finished product and ignored how

Qualitative Research-Grounded Theory
Qualitative research is about non numerical data and can be defined as a type of research that is used
to understand a given behavior, and it provides a general knowledge of the issue to develop
hypotheses. This kind of research adds to the nursing practice, science, and knowledge, by filling in
the gaps where quantitative knowledge fails to explain a health problem. In providing a hypothesis, it
sets the grounds for other studies to be done. It is the kind of research that provides clinicians the why
for implementation of a given practice. It does not provide cause and effect. Qualitative research gets
at the how and why of the story, in ways that quantitative research cannot. The key concept of the
study is often referred to as central phenomenon ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Continuing The Greater Co Prosperity Sphere Through Oil...
Continuing the Greater Co Prosperity Sphere Through Oil Independence
1. Addressing the Problem:
Due to the Japanese presence in China during the late 1930s and early 1940s, the United States
embargoed oil exports to Japan as a punishment for interfering with the open trade policy in China.
This embargo was detrimental to the Japanese supply because Japan depended on the US for 80% of
its imported oil. The Japanese also had no significant natural sources of oil in its possession.
Therefore, the oil problem became a crisis as military demands quickly drained Japanese stockpiles.
The Japanese needed to find oil to support its larger dream of establishing the Greater Co Prosperity
Sphere (GCPS).
The reference point of the Japanese decision ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Nonetheless, Japanese leadership overwhelmingly agreed that the first choice was incompatible with
GCPS and was therefore not a choice to consider.
2. The Alternative Approach:
A more effective approach would have been to appease the Americans in the short term, while
additionally searching for and quickly mobilizing other sources of oil in order to reduce dependence
on the US. This two step approach would have been more effective in pursuing the Japanese s GCPS
because the short term setback would have allowed for the long term survival of Japan s plan to
become a regional great power. By taking the admittedly high risk route of attacking Pearl Harbor, the
Japanese significantly constricted the GCPS s chances of survival. In order to obtain vital amounts of
oil for the continuation of Japanese military power, appeasing the Americans by letting go of China
for the time being would have allowed the GCPS to survive another day and to continue once the
country had obtained its own independent source of oil.
a. Appeasing the Americans and Receiving Oil Diplomatically
The appeasement of the Americans would have been feasible with some flexibility and long term
thinking. Appeasement of the Americans would have required the Japanese to abandon all, or at least
half, of China, according to Matsuoka Yosuke, an aggressive pro expansionist advisor who was the
leading advocate for the

Using Visual Stimulation
How Using Visual Stimulation Can Allow Children to Learn Without Being Bored
It all started back in the year of 2000 when I began to teach Sunday school. The children that I taught
were the ages from four years to six years old. I really enjoyed teaching that age group at the time.
Every week I would read them the Bible lesson for that week. I used the expression in my voice to try
to make the lesson interesting. Also, I had an assistant teacher who would do all types of arts and craft
projects with them. This begins to get boring to me week after week. I started to thinking about how I
can teach in a different way. Children in this age group have a short attention span. One day while
shopping with a girlfriend at JR s in Burlington, NC, as ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I also use prerecorded skits and the one I have written as well. I have also started a sickle cell
awareness ministry. Sickle Cell is a blood disease that causes the red blood cells to turn into a sickle
shape instead of being round, this causes the person to have a pain crisis because the sickle shape cells
do not pass through the blood vessels smoothly cutting off oxygen. This allows me to teach people of
all ages concerning Sickle Cell awareness. I have been invited to other churches and different types of
events to use the puppets as a teaching tool. I am thankful for this gift and plan to use it more and
more as I grow creatively.

The United States Should Be Vaccinated Against Disease
I believe that all children in the United States should be vaccinated against disease. There is a large
argument in today society involving childhood vaccinations. The argument is whether children should
be forced to have mandatory vaccines, or if parents should be allowed to refuse these vaccines. One of
the main reasons that parents are skeptical of vaccines, is because there have been more recorded
cases of children experiencing serious side effects after receiving the vaccines. Now with more and
more cases of vaccinated diseases popping up all over the country, the issue is becoming serious.
According to the CDC, more than 20 percent of children in America are not vaccinated against
disease. This poses a serious issue for the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Parents have the power to solve the issue but still choose not to. Even if a parent wanted to vaccinate
his or her child, it could still become sick because a child that was old enough to receive their
vaccinations wasn t vaccinated. People also argue that the ingredients in vaccines are harmful and
toxic. There are toxic ingredients in vaccines, but they are harmless in the amount that is given to the
child. In fact, children receive more aluminum from breast milk then they do vaccines. Finally,
vaccines save the government copious amounts of money in societal cost. Between 1994 and 2014 the
government was estimated to save around 1.38 trillion dollars in societal cost including savings from
preventing lost productivity due to disability and early death. Similarly, the Unites States saves about
27 dollars for every one dollar invested in the DTaP (Diphtheria, Tetanus, and Whooping cough)
vaccinations. In contrast, many parents state that it should be their choice whether their children are
vaccinated or not. One of the biggest contributing theories about vaccines is that they cause serious
side effects. These side effects include anaphylaxis and intussusceptions, a type of bowel blockage.
These side effects are extremely rare. The only happen in around one per million children that receive
vaccines, and according to Sanjay Gupta, Chief Medical Correspondent for CNN, you are 100 times
more likely to be struck by lightning than to have a serious allergic

Liberal and Radical Approaches in Zambia
The main argument of this essay is to compare and contrast the liberal and radical approaches to social
change. Accompanied by practical examples, I will state and re enforce the theoretical approach that
plausibly explains the prevailing circumstances in Zambia. This essay will begin by defining briefly
what the liberal and radical approaches are; also it will explain what is understood by the term social
change. It is also necessary to point out that I have taken a stand on agreeing that the liberal approach
takes a crediblestance in explaining the prevailing circumstances in Zambia. In this essay I will
explain how this is and compare and contrast it with the radical approach.
Social change refers to an alteration in the social order of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This may be true in its own sense, but not true in explaining the statuses in Zambia. Currently, Zambia
is a capitalist country and in any case capitalism is getting stronger in the country and world wide. The
next stage after capitalism (communism) is not in effect and does not show signs of dawning in
Zambia any time in the near future.
Although I have determined which approach describes situations happening in Zambia, differences
between the radical and liberal approaches should be determined. The main difference is that the
liberal approach advocates for capitalism and freedom were as the radical approach was developed to
eradicate capitalism; this was eminent at a time when capitalism in Europe had developed to a stage
when it created a lot of poverty and suffering to the working class and other inferior classes of the
capitalist system. Also, liberalism or the liberal approach tends to ultimately lead to the emergence of
imperialism were it takes an apologetic stance in imperialism. Imperialism is the extension of control
or authority over foreign areas (countries). In other words it s the suppression of country A to country
B politically, socially and economically; the direct control of one country over another in many
dimensions. The radical approach on the other hand advocates on the emergence of communism as the
ultimate and reasonable outcome. Communism describes a society were conflicts are not present.

Hacking In the Business Society Essay
Hacking In the Business Society
From history we can observer that human society is easily influenced, and often mislead. There is a
near endless amount of examples for this, ranging from the Suicidal Sect leaders (David Koresh

Government computers, the arena for hackers was finally , fully opened. Computers where no longer

one of those colossal university mainframes of the past. Hacking was no longer an educational hobby
of Professors and students in universities, but became a war between the attackers and the attacked. (

the contextual values of the Roaring Twenties of Hedonism and superficiality i.e. the motif of the foul

Employees form the basis of a successful organisation and the abilities and behavior of employees can
vary the performance of an organisation significantly. Due to the fact that respective jobs require
specific sets of skills or attributes, selections are essential in ensuring that the most suitable candidates
are hired. Selection refers to the process of assessing candidates by various means and making a
choice followed by an offer of employment (Graham, 1998, p.206). It is often thought of as an integral

From an economic perspective, the subsequent costs of occupational fraud include a reduction of stock
prices and loss of employment. These economic costs are exemplified by the 5% of revenue lost per
annum from every average Canadian organisation as a result of employment fraud (Koletar, 2003).
According to Herman, a positive correlation exists between the degree to which a candidate could be
in a position to cause harm to others, colleagues, or the organisation and that of a reference check
(Herman, 1993). For example, public servants and jobs that necessitate the handling of inordinate
amounts of money would warrant a background check, as the risk of financial losses or damage to
government organization reputations are higher.
Interviews remain a widely used selection technique in contemporary industries despite the relative
unreliability of this method. Dipboye reports that approximately 70% of organizations in the United
States utilize interviews as the main selection strategy in both promotion and recruitment ( Dipboye,
1992). A selection interview can be broadly delineated as a dialogue initiated by one or persons to
gather information and evaluate the qualifications of an applicant for employment (Dipboye, 1992).
The exclusion of other specific qualifications such as interpersonal skills, personal motivations and
career objectives is apparent in this definition,

Media Frames
In this era of political polarization and increasingly partisan news outlets, it has become simply for
people to find press sources that agree with their worldview. However, even in these situations it is
important to consider how mainstream sources choose to frame and issue. The journalism industry
depends upon conventions and those conventions can help to shape and influence coverage
(Richardson, 2007). Furthermore the language choices that journalists made influence how the public
perceives coverage (Richardson, 2007). In the example of the coverage of Kim Davis the argument

If asked to identify a great leader, we might immediately think of someone like Nelson Mandela or

the thought of a young girl from a village in Pakistan. I am Malala: The Girl Who was Shot by the
Taliban redirects our thinking to just such an idea of a great leader (Yousafzai Lamb, 2013). Malala
shows leadership well beyond her years. She perseveres through dangerous situations to stand up for
her beliefs, and her dedication to making education available to all children is truly inspiring. Malala s
story draws you in from an account of her birth. When I was born, people in our village commiserated

Oncology And Conventional Caner Treatments
Oncology is the study of cancer; the study of tumorous growths and malignancy s. In the United States
this branch of medical study and research has gravitated into a deadly practice that does little to
provide patients in most cases with a cancer free life, but instead drains patients of financial stability
and poisons them with toxic substances that cause more damage than benefit. The medical practice of
do no harm is no longer a part of the consciousness of modern medicine that at one time guided those
practicing medicine.
Caner Medicine Fraud
The illness of cancer is no more than big business and a way to create a consistent and large cash flow

The Beatles Hey Jude Poetic Techniques
The Beatles, Hey Jude manipulates the verse bridge structure until the coda, where the chorus finally
appears. This is different to all the other songs I have analysed, since September, Cry Me A River and
Heart Of Gold have a verse chorus form. Also, one difference between this song and the other songs is
that it is in a Major key (F Major), and the rest of the songs are in a Minor Key. The Major key helps
to create to the clear, and confident style to the song, which is represented in this song. This song is
the only song to include an extremely complex structure, containing interludes between each verse and
bridge. This something none of the other songs include.
Led Zeppelin s, Stairway To Heaven, contains a call and response between the 12 string and the
telecaster Electric Guitar in the solo of this song, this is widely used in rock music, and works so
successfully in this song as it helps to create suspense and movement within the music. In my opinion

While Socialism (equality) sounds as if it were a better economic system than capitalism (equity), it is

why I picked this song is because it presents a strong message. Not only did
Jackson make a powerful statement with his lyrics, he also made one with his choice of rhythm and

The second verse talks about making the right choice to just go away instead of shedding blood, and
trying to be a tough guy. The third verse simply describes that even if one chooses to walk away, it is
better to be alive than to risk it. The fourth verse in my opinion talks about the consequences of
fighting and that if one chooses to be violent, chances are that they will get hurt.
As mentioned earlier the chorus defines to just walk away although No One wants To Be
Defeated. It is better to go because in the end It Doesn t Matter Who is Wrong Or Right.
Jackson uses very powerful words and explains that it is always best to look out for yourself instead of
proving yourself to others. It is not worth the struggle (songfacts).
As I was analyzing the song, I was listening for specific sounds and noises that would symbolize the
meaning of the song. I heard a police siren which could symbolize that if you get involved with gangs
and violence, you will end up in jail. I also heard a snapping sound and deep breathing sounds. The
breathing sounds could represent the sound of someone running away and catching a breath. I could
detect sounds as if someone was getting punched and sounds of blades which could represent a fight.
While searching for different meanings of the song I came across an interesting

How Did The Industrial Revolution Affect Children s Life...
Introduction
Until 1833, the lives of children were often extremely long and difficult. They were forced to work
long hours, with very little sleep from the age of 6. These conditions were unlawful and cruel.
Children aged from six years old in the industrial revolution worked hard hours for very little. The
children usually worked up to 19 hours a day, with a one hour break. Not only were these children

The younger children, who were not old enough to use the equipment, were sent to help the textile
workers. The people who the children served would beat them, verbally abuse them, and take no
consideration for their safety. Both girls and boys who laboured in factories were given beatings and
other harsh forms of painful punishments. One punishment for being late or not working hard enough
would be to be weighted. A slave master would tie a heavy weight to a child s neck, and have them
walk through the factory aisles so the other children could see them and become intimidated. This
could last sometimes an hour. Boys were sometimes dragged naked from their beds and sent to the
factories only holding their clothes, to be put on there. This was to make sure the boys would not be
late, even by a few minutes. There were people in this time period that strongly advocated the use or
the abolishment of child labour, or at least the improvement of conditions. Factory owners loved child
labour, and they supported their reasoning with ideas that it was good for everything from the
economy to the building of the children s characters. Parents of the children who worked were almost
forced to at least allow it as they needed the income. There were some relevant people that fought for
the regulation, improvement, and abolishment of child labour. The first phase to improving conditions

Compare And Contrast The Writing Style Of John Steinbeck
Authors have very versatile writing styles that contribute to getting their messages and themes across.
An author always has a motive for writing a story and a point they are trying to get across. John
Steinbeck has written some very influential novels in his life. These books are read in high schools, as
well as in people s free time to try and expand their minds and change their perspectives on life.
Steinbeck has a very descriptive writing style that helps make his books classic novels worth reading.
Steinbeck is a writer that does a great job of not just blatantly telling the reader what he wants them to
know, but making comparisons and inferences that get the reader to think and develop their own
opinions, which is he ultimate goal of the author. I read East of Eden this past summer. In East of
Eden, Steinbeck paints the picture of two families, the Hamilton s and the Trask s, and he describes
their lives and how they end up eventually meeting and co existing in the Salinas Valley in California.
East of Eden has many parallels with the story of Adam and Eve s sons, Cain and Abel. This is an
example of Steinbeck using parallels and comparisons of real life occurences to help illustrate his
story and message. But the two books I d like to focus on in this paper are Of Mice and Men, and
Grapes of Wrath.
Steinbeck was born on February 7, 1902 in Salinas California. He was the third child of John
Steinbeck and Olive Hamilton. His mother was formerly a

Mortal Women In The Odyssey
The Odyssey a classic mythological poem composed by Homer. The Odyssey constructs a view of
men, women, the divine, and the mortal. The men portrayed in the Odyssey tend to be dominant,
heroic, and powerful. However, the women are given mixed character roles for example some are
portrayed as submissive and meek where as others are divine and determined. Through the Odyssey
we are exposed to many different views of women of both the divine and of the mortal. Yet, although
we have the divine women and the mortal we are still projected with the idea of the men being in
charge, and two hierarchy s one within the divine and the other within the mortal. Athena is a divine
goddess who is always disguised as a man. Penelope is the loyal wife of Odysseus. ... Show more

These women are the cleaners for Penelope. Throughout the Odyssey they are not mentioned much;
however, once Odysseus returns home then the maids are a key character in the Odyssey. In book 22:
Slaughter in the Hall the maids are put to death by being hung due to the fact that they were sluts and
they lay with the suitors, thus they were not loyal. Since the maids were disloyal to the household and
Odysseus sentenced them to death. The maids were given a vulnerable, unimpressive and shameful
death. They would be hung like doves or larks in springés triggered in a thicket, where the birds think
to rest a cruel nesting, So now in turn each women thrust her head into a noose and swung, yanked
high in the air, to perish there most piteously. Their feet danced for a little, but not long. (Book XXII
page 424 line 520) Through this quote we find a helpless, unherioc, and embarrassing death. The
maids to do not have a choice of life or death like the suitors do. As upsetting as this quote is, it still
gives a touch of femininity by using the claim dancing around . Homer did not have to state dancing
around he could have stating that they swayed from side to side, but rather he states that they danced.
Through this word choice we relate it dancing to women, but also to a non dominant and vulnerable

Analysis Of `` House Of Sand And Fog `` By Andre Dubus IIi
Alienation Throughout the novel House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III, the recurring theme of
alienation takes its toll on the lives of the two main characters: Kathy and Behrani. We see how the
isolation of both characters not only has an effect on them, but also on the lives of others who matter
most to them. Alienation is the act of being withdrawn or isolated from a life in which one is
accustomed or should be accustomed to. The incidents of alienation demonstrated in the novel
include, the relationship between each character and their families, Behrani and his family being
forced out of their home country and living in America, and Kathy getting evicted from her family
house. As we see these events occur throughout the book, we also learn that both characters will do
whatever it takes to claim ownership of what they both call home. This drawn out battle over a piece
of property ends up putting Kathy along with Lester behind bars, and with Behrani losing his son in
the process. Dubus illustrates many scenes where both Kathy and Behrani isolate themselves from
their families. For example, when Kathy is at the motel reminiscing of her phone calls with her
mother, we see how Kathy alienates herself from her family when she notes how after Nick left, she
would start lying about how well he was doing at his new job and how this used to be true (44). By not
telling her mother that Nick had left her, this demonstrates a clear example of her seclusion from her

Peasants And Serfs
Peasants were members of the lowest class, those who work. They were the most common class. They
were the millers, blacksmiths, butchers, carpenters, farmers, and other trades people. Peasant women
in particular, spent much of their time taking care of children, making clothes, and cooking meals.
They also tended gardens, took care of animals by tending chicken, shearing sheep, and milking cows
(Cels 16). Within peasants, there were two main groups of people, the serfs and the freemen. Both
were employed by the lords. And serfs were people that paid more fees, and had less rights. Freemen
on the other hand paid less fees and had more rights than serfs (Noiret). While freemen could leave the

Prioritizing Hawaii born Homeless before Those from the Mainland
Hawaii is known for its beautiful beaches, tropical climate, and (former) pineapple exports. This state
is also number one in a lot of areas: worst traffic, highest cost of living, and highest homeless
population. These are all important issues that most people outside of the islands do not think about
when imagining a tropical paradise. The homeless population is a critical issue that will be discussed
in this essay. Homelessness is a result of many factors: job loss, family disputes, foreclosure, and even
drug addiction. In Hawaii, the main cause of homelessness is the rising cost of living. As housing

This is their home, yet they do not have a home. Meanwhile others from out of state are flown down
here because it is easier to live in. Being homeless in your own home state is tough. Many possible
solutions to solve homelessness in Hawaii exist, but it is important to give priority to the local born
homeless population before helping the ones that arrived here from out of state. Having a large
homeless population affects everything about Hawaii the economy, the government, the environment,
and the people. These things stack up on each other which creates a snowball effect. Local residents
may complain to the government to do something about the homeless issue. The government decides
to create laws limiting where the homeless may stay. The homeless move to other places, such as
popular tourist beaches. The tourists are turned off by the growing homeless population dirtying the
beaches, which in turn causes a decrease in tourism. The island s economy suffers. Homelessness
affects everything, especially in a small island like Hawaii. The economy takes the biggest toll,
however because Hawaii relies on the tourism industry, it is important to keep visitors happy and
satisfied. It is an eyesore looking at the homeless littering the beaches and streets with tarps and
shopping carts. This drives the tourists away, and without them, our economy declines. The homeless
also affect the environment in which we live. With nowhere to go, they

Genetically Modified Organism, Agriculture, And Synthetic...
Genetically Modified Organism
Agriculture, a necessity for providing basic needs, has evolved tremendously since the first time it was
practiced. When first started, agriculture was relatively simple: plant the seeds, water the seeds, and
gather the end product. Now, agriculture has changed to include pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic
fertilizers to produce and maintain higher yields. The Green Revolution in the 1940 s to 1970 s help
modernize agriculture with high yielding varieties, better irrigation systems, and synthetic fertilizers.
Without the Green Revolution, world hunger would have been a lot higher than it was in the past
(Easterbrook 1997). Conventional farming was established thanks to the revolution and helped greatly
in keeping world food security. The world is still a limited resource and the amount of fertile land that
allows production of agriculture can only decrease from now. Current production of agriculture may
not be able to keep up with the steady population growth of the developing countries. The population
is projected to increase from roughly 7 billion currently to 9.1 billion by 2050, meaning that there will
be 2 billion more mouths to feed (UNPD). Agriculture needed something new to help provide higher
yields of crops in order to keep world hunger levels at a minimum. Luckily in the mid 1990 s,

States. Genetically modified organism is an organism

Disadvantages Of Biometrics
There are various ways to implement biometric using current technology in this world. However,
which suit best for companies that want to implement their computer systems to check their employee
identifications. Also, there are people out there concerns that using biometrics system will violate their
privacy. Let s exam a few implementations regarding the biometrics that the technology is currently
being used in the workforce. Biometrics have existed for a very long time ago. People have used it and
still used it in today s workforce. For instance, FBI uses Fingerprints to verify a person s
identification. The Government uses CAC Card to identify its employee using the fingerprint on its
chip and passports as well, etc.
Biometric is a system that detect a person s identification using a living person s behavioral
characteristics of that person such as fingerprints, hand gestures, voices, image scan like eyes, DNA
and other facial images. For example, FBI is implemented a new identification technology called Next
Generation Identification system. This new upgrade system will provide faster and more accurate way
to check someone s background like criminal history information for the FBI agencies, law
enforcement agencies and intelligence agencies. The Next Generation Identification checks the
fingerprint that matches with the database records.
Another implementation of biometrics is using authentication to verify if someone s logging the

Demarginalizing The Relation Between Gender Oppression And...
Gender oppression is a prevalent matter universally as woman is relegated by man worldwide.
Although all forms of oppression are consequential, often having a variety of overlapping aspects,
gender oppression can be designated individually. Gender oppression differs from other forms of
oppression as all other forms of oppression, such as racism and homophobia, can relate back to
gender. In addition, gender oppression affects the largest sum of individuals overall. Woman is one of
the two central sexes and women make up roughly half of the earth s population. Other attributes such
as race and sexual orientation are more diverse than sex, however, they can overlap with sex. This
concept regarding the interconnection between social categories is known as intersectionality, which is
discussed widely in Kimberlé Crenshaw s piece titled Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and
Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist
Politics . Crenshaw discusses several court cases in her piece in which it is illustrated that institutions
such as Congress failed to take matters such as intersectionality into account (Crenshaw, 1989 p. 142).
She states, the boundaries of sex and race discrimination doctrine are defined respectively by white
women s and Black men s experiences (Crenshaw, 1989, p. 143). This statement assists in
demonstrating how even when intersectionality is taken into account, one can still be relegated as the

Symbolism in The Storm Essay
Symbolism in The Storm
The Storm , written by Kate Chopin in 1898, examines the uncontrollable desires of a young wife,
lured into the arms of her past lover as her husband and son are caught in a storm. Bobinôt and four
year old Bibi are running errands when the storm suddenly hit. Bobinôt s wife, Calixta was at home
sewing when she noticed the severe storm happening outside. When Calixta went outside to gather
some clothing, her old lover Alcée asked for shelter during the storm. Through her use of symbolism,
Chopin gives the reader her feelings on the love affair between Calixta and Alcée. Chopin s uses

When Alcée first arrives at Calixta s home, the rain has just started getting bad. The sexual tension

throw herself into Alcée s arms for protection. While they are in the throes of passion, the rain reaches
its full force. By the time Alcée and Calixta have finished their affair, the rain has stopped and the
storm has moved on. It seems as though the rain has washed away their sin of adultery, because when
they walk outside the world is shiny and bright. All this time, Bobinôt and Bibi have been waiting at
the store. When the storm finally passes, they are able to go home. On their way, Bobinôt is afraid that
his wife will be angry with him for taking so long at the store and for not being presentable. To his
surprise, when they come in the backdoor, Calixta is fixing dinner and is in a wonderful mood. She
checks them over to make sure they are dry and unharmed. She seems genuinely happy to see her
husband and son. However, when Bobinôt gives her the treat he picked up for her; she only kisses him

The United Kingdom Of The European Union
On June 23rd, 2016 the United Kingdom held a referendum that would ultimately decide their
economic and global relationships with the European Union, along with the rest of the world. Brexit,
the highly known nickname of the phrase Britain exiting was vote to spate from their long standing

whether they could or should operate by themselves. Immediately following that day, the price of gold
spiked up by four percent. Even before the vote, uncertainty had already arose on the future of the
European integration process if Brexit would to have been passed. As the outcome stands today, a
majority of the UK approved the detachment of the European Union and would now begin to suffer
blows to their economy in the short term, medium term and long term. One such impact that came
rather quick was the drop in stocks. The exchange rates were a particular hit on large banks of the
state. Though those two initial impacts recuperated in a week s time, interest on government bonds 3

Landscapers are responsible for maintaining the grounds landscaped by using modern power
equipment as well as traditional handheld tools. Employees in this family business perform a series of
tasks and can include a mixture of the following: mowing, planting, laying sod, fertilizing, watering,
raking, digging, installing sprinkler systems, repairing existing sprinklers, and laying concrete borders
outlining flower and bush beds.
Rationale and Conclusion
Waits wanted to make sure the candidate had experience in all areas of the landscaping business

displaced and are looking for new job opportunity, Waits was concerned a lot of applicants would not

the job description to entice employees who seek such an environment. It was also important to list the
skills required, as the employee is expected to have experience with each skill. Waits stressed the
importance of hiring someone with experience, because the business is growing rapidly and Waits

Satire in Gulliver s Travels
First published in 1726, Gulliver s Travels is a momentous piece of literature which defined the
satirical genre and empowered writers of following generations to assume the responsibility of
keeping the government in check and exposing corruption. The novel accomplices this through its

cultures he s introduced to. Exploring themes of corruption, religious division and hypocrisy, and
cultural progressivism, Gulliver s travels implements and employs various allusions and metaphors as

Advantages Of Traditional Costing System
Conventional Absorption Costing Systems or Traditional Costing System
It is a remarkable reality that the traditional costing systems use a solitary, volume based cost driver.
This is the motivation behind why the traditional product costing system misshapes the expense of
items or products. By and large, this kind of costing system appoints the overhead expenses to items
on the premise of their relative use of direct work. Thus, traditional cost systems frequently report
incorrect product costs. The issue is in the basic technique of the traditional costing systems. They
stick to the supposition that items reason cost. Every time a unit of product is produced, it is expected
that cost be brought about.
This suspicion bodes well for certain ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance, a carrier may have sections like international operations, domestic operations, freight
operations, and so forth while an auto producer may have fragments like engine bicycles, autos,

The central management gives the general bearing and procedure, however, a lot of choice making is
designated to the section administration. It is critical to effectively screen their execution, which is
measured by management accounting tools, for example, residual income, accounting rate of return,
return on investment, and so on. By dissecting these measurements, the concentrated administration
chooses whether to put in extra interest in a fragment in light of its fabulous execution or to strip from
a section when it is losing cash. These instruments are additionally valuable in looking at execution of

The Chick-Fil-A Short Story
On October 8, 2016, Samantha Webb went on her first date. Her date for the evening was Calvin
Jones. She had turned 16 the previous July and hadn t been asked on a date since then. Calvin had
asked her to the school s Homecoming dance. For the day date, they started at Chick fil A. Sam was
worried because this was her first time eating Chick fil A. She soon learned that it was good and that
waffle fries were the bomb. The next part involved some tricky carpooling when she learned that her
sister s date didn t drive very well. She feared for her life. He also had to gas money from his grandpa.
After arriving to Rexburg almost a half an hour later than the rest of her group, she was going to play
laser tag! She loved laser tag and often likes to brag that she could dominate. However she would soon
learn that playing against her 9 and 10 year old brothers was nothing like playing with adrenaline
charged teenage boys. She was second to last and only because someone else s gun broke down half
way through the game. They played two games that day, she lost both. ... Show more content on

This took a while. It involved a few burns and being poked in the eye. Finally the boys came to get the

pin it on him after the third time. It fell off one minute later when he moved so the parents could take

Marketing Strategy Of Nokia
Background
Nokia was the world s largest mobile phone maker for 14 years. The company was once acclaimed for
its marketing strategy success for changing mobile phones from just a communication device to
everyday fashion accessories. However, in today s global smartphone market, Nokia has only 3% of
the market share and is declining. The company s decreasing sales was an obvious sign of
vulnerability leading to the selloff of its mobile device business to Microsoft in 2013 (Surowiecki,
2013).
Marketing Concept
The marketing concept is the philosophy that companies analyze consumers needs and then develop
products or services to satisfy them ( Marketing Principle , 2012, p. 11). For Nokia, before Microsoft
acquiring its business unit, mobile phone was its number one offerings. The company was able to
create and define the market from its superior smartphone designs and early adoption of technologies
such as operating systems, Global System for Mobile communication (GSM), and built in camera
(Khedekar, 2012).
Marketing Strategy Shortcomings
One of the most significant factors of Nokia s decreasing footprint is its failed marketing strategy. The
shortcomings of Nokia s marketing strategy include the lack of early recognition of its opportunities

SWOT analysis is a crucial tool in understanding internal and external factors contributing to the
product s marketing strategy and the overall business strategy ( Marketing Principle , 2012, p. 41).
The areas that could have changed the history of Nokia are opportunities and threats. On opportunity
side, Nokia did well in recognizing growth opportunity in Europe market. For threat, Apple and
Samsung were clearly the biggest threats from competition standpoint. Nokia had technology to fend
them off, but due to internal pressure and bureaucracy, the company was unsuccessful in maintaining

Digital Piracy And Its Impact On Society Essay
When Game of Thrones premiers to a HBO audience of 10.3 million viewers through legitimate
channels, an additional 4.3 million viewers is estimated to watch the premier illegitimately. These
digital pirates cause quite a controversy for the show`s industry, legitimate viewers, and the show
runners themselves, even. Mixed thoughts, reactions, and even discrepancies in quantitative numbers
shroud the perception and comprehension of modern digital piracy. Examining the culture of piracy,
how and why people pirate content, as well as the legal and industrial components of piracy can
provide a contextualized understanding of piracy in the digital age, and the future of piracy.
Understanding technological and ethical factors that lead to piracy, and legal and industrial
repercussions to digital piracy are essential to navigating a discussion about whether or not piracy has
a great impact on industry or society as a whole. Defining digital piracy is the first and foremost step
towards understanding its role in today s world. For our purposes, looking to Miriam Webster s
definition of piracy as the act of illegally copying someone s product or invention without permission,
is an excellent starting point. Theft, by comparison, Miriam Webster defines as felonious taking and
removing of personal property with the intent to deprive the rightful owner of it. To contrast theft and
piracy, digital piracy does not deprive the rightful owner of the item. With physical objects,

Pearl Harbor was a bad day for United States and there are a lot of people still sad that it had

received that Japan might attack Pearl Harbor. The message was sent by the its fleet commander on
October 16,1914. There was also an assumption in Washington that Japan had no seaborne aircraft
capable of catching the Army s B 24 bombers. The U.S. government didn t think that the Japan was

This helps explain how the facility will run on a standard basis. Part of the standard operating
procedure outlines safe working practices that will enable staff to conduct safety checks to help reduce
risks and hazards and to make sure everything is safe for the public to use.
Quality Checks
To manage and maintain safe working practices, management should carry out quality checks (quality
assurance) and audits against these standard operating procedures. Checks or audits may be carried
out: Internally: management check lists and company audits Externally: some facilities subscribe to
quality standards e.g. Quest,
Investors In People (IIP), that are monitored by people from the awarding body. Quality standards are
sought after by sports organisations that can use the achievement of high standards to promote the
safety of their facility
Safety checks
Safety checks should be carried out to eliminate the risk of putting the safety of people attending a
sporting event at risk.
A football stadium could carry out safety checks in a number of areas, prior to a match, to ensure its
health and safety procedures are in place. A pro forma checklist should be provided and should link
directly to standard operating procedures/safe systems of work. Safety checks carried out include
ensuring that: * Fire escapes are clear * First aid boxes are full * Steward ratios to spectators are
correct * Steward duties and rosters fully

US Counterintelligence Threats
Outlook There are many forces which have shaped the development of the US counterintelligence
strategy over the years. These forces run the spectrum from emotion to computers to new threats not
thought of even 30 years ago. The United States has been conducting counterintelligence operations
for as long as it has had a means of conducting intelligence operations. George Washington
understood the importance of conducting counterintelligence operations. He created the Culper Spy
Ring, which was vital to defeating the British. I believe counterintelligence will play more of a pivotal
role considering today s threats.

system. This relates to what we have been study in class because we are learning about the circulatory

The natural pacemaker of the heart is the initiating electrical conductor to start each heartbeat which is
identified as the sinoatrial node located in the right atrium of the heart and signals for atrial
contraction (Levine Miller, 2008). The electricity travels then to the atrioventricular node that signals
for ventricular contraction. The Bundle of His receives this signal and the electrical impulse is split
down the septum of the heart to each ventricle. The impulse then terminates in the purkinje fibers

What Is The Myth Of Sisyphus
The bus was silent, no one daring to speak. We had just suffered the first loss in more than 10 years to
one of the competing schools to make it to the state tournament for tennis. This bus ride home from
the tournament in Green Bay gave me sufficient time to reflect on my matches and on the sport as a
whole.
Tennis is a sport of repetition. You play points over and over again until a match is complete, matches
until a tournament is complete, and then the whole process repeats a couple weeks later. This
reminded me of the myth of Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a kind who upon his death was tasked with
rolling a boulder up a hill. However, as soon as he pushed the stone to the top it rolled back down to
the bottom and he had to start again. While this is seen as a punishment in the myth I see it as a
blessing. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In playing tennis I am essentially Sisyphus, repeating the same process over and over for hours and
then doing it again. This is a blessing because we have the free will to associate value to something
inherently valueless and put effort and time into it to make ourselves better. So by giving Sisyphus this
task to repeat endlessly for eternity, they actually blessed him by giving him something to attach
meaning to. In the same way tennis gives me something to attach meaning to and better myself
through a game that will not improve me academically or as a person. Tennis has given me something
to work and improve at and attach meaning to which fulfills me. I have tasked myself with the
unachievable goal of perfection and it has brought me more happiness and achievement than almost
anything else in my

What is Feminism?
Before jumping headfirst right away into What is Feminism , the topic of terminology will come first
due to the importance terminologies can play when conveying a message. Feminism isn t the only
term used to describe this yen for equality that will be spoken of; in fact, there are many reprehensible,
repugnant, distasteful terms being substituted, fortunately, there are also still many guarding ones.
Those considered reprehensible: misandry movement and feminazi movement. Those considered

  • 2. The Octopus At the turn of the century, American readers were interested only in stories with happy endings, where goodness was praised and evil was punished. They did not particularly care if that was a false interpretation of the way life really was. When men such as Frank Norris, the author of The Octopus, wrote angrily of the injustices and poverty to be found in America, readers turned away. The Octopus made them change their minds. The course of the novel and the reality of its characters held the readers attention. It is so powerful a book that people had to care about the wheat growers, almost against their wishes. The impact did not end in the early twentieth century, but continues its legacy into the new millenium. The Octopus, depicts ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Their solution to the crisis was to keep magnifying it, until it ruined the farmers. Once the railroad raised the price for the land, the farmers could not afford to buy. They proceeded to create dummy buyers, fictitious settlers who they created to come in and buy the land. Soon after Delany, a ranch worker was fired, the railroad used him to act as a dummy buyer and buy the land. There was no way Delany could actually afforded to buy the land on his own; he was obviously acting as the railroad s pawn, sent to aggravate the ranchers who leased farms from the railroad. The railroad also tampered with other types of characters in the story. Dyke was fired from his job at the railroad after he refused to work for the rates of a man doing half the work he was doing. Then after Dyke mortgaged his land to the railroad, they raised the rates on the crop he was producing. They drove him to poverty and when he tried to take back what they had stolen from him by robbing money from one of their trains, they had him thrown in jail for life. This is another example of how Norris evinces the railroads unethical treatment of the common man in California at the time.Shelgrim, the executive of the P. and S.W. tried to justify the railroad s actions, and in a way, pass on the responsibility, by calling the railroad a force, something that he had no control over. These voluntary, market relevant, and consensus based standards are produced as a result of the identification of a global need and are compiled through the work of international experts working in conjunction with one another. An organization would select one of these systems by evaluating the scope of their activities (The British Assessment Bureau). Addressing the Problem: Due to the Japanese presence in China during the late 1930s and early 1940s, the United States embargoed oil exports to Japan as a punishment for interfering with the open trade policy in China. This embargo was detrimental to the Japanese supply because Japan depended on the US for 80% of its imported oil. The Japanese also had no significant natural sources of oil in its possession. Therefore, the oil problem became a crisis as military demands quickly drained Japanese stockpiles. The Alternative Approach: A more effective approach would have been to appease the Americans in the short term, while additionally searching for and quickly mobilizing other sources of oil in order to reduce dependence on the US. This two step approach would have been more effective in pursuing the Japanese s GCPS because the short term setback would have allowed for the long term survival of Japan s plan to become a regional great power. By taking the admittedly high risk route of attacking Pearl Harbor, the Japanese significantly constricted the GCPS s chances of survival. In order to obtain vital amounts of oil for the continuation of Japanese military power, appeasing the Americans by letting go of China for the time being would have allowed the GCPS to survive another day and to continue once the country had obtained its own independent source of oil. a. Appeasing the Americans and Receiving Oil Diplomatically The appeasement of the Americans would have been feasible with some flexibility and long term thinking. There is a large argument in today society involving childhood vaccinations. The argument is whether children should be forced to have mandatory vaccines, or if parents should be allowed to refuse these vaccines. One of the main reasons that parents are skeptical of vaccines, is because there have been more recorded cases of children experiencing serious side effects after receiving the vaccines. In fact, children receive more aluminum from breast milk then they do vaccines. Finally, vaccines save the government copious amounts of money in societal cost. Also, liberalism or the liberal approach tends to ultimately lead to the emergence of imperialism were it takes an apologetic stance in imperialism. Imperialism is the extension of control or authority over foreign areas (countries). They were forced to work long hours, with very little sleep from the age of 6. These conditions were unlawful and cruel. Children aged from six years old in the industrial revolution worked hard hours for very little. The children usually worked up to 19 hours a day, with a one hour break. Not only were these children subject to long hours, but also, they were in horrible conditions. Large, heavy, and dangerous equipment was very common for children to be using or working near. A slave master would tie a heavy weight to a child s neck, and have them walk through the factory aisles so the other children could see them and become intimidated. This could last sometimes an hour. Boys were sometimes dragged naked from their beds and sent to the factories only holding their clothes, to be put on there. • 21. Compare And Contrast The Writing Style Of John Steinbeck Authors have very versatile writing styles that contribute to getting their messages and themes across. An author always has a motive for writing a story and a point they are trying to get across. John Steinbeck has written some very influential novels in his life. These books are read in high schools, as well as in people s free time to try and expand their minds and change their perspectives on life. Steinbeck has a very descriptive writing style that helps make his books classic novels worth reading. Steinbeck is a writer that does a great job of not just blatantly telling the reader what he wants them to know, but making comparisons and inferences that get the reader to think and develop their own opinions, which is he ultimate goal of the author. I read East of Eden this past summer. In East of Eden, Steinbeck paints the picture of two families, the Hamilton s and the Trask s, and he describes their lives and how they end up eventually meeting and co existing in the Salinas Valley in California. East of Eden has many parallels with the story of Adam and Eve s sons, Cain and Abel. This is an example of Steinbeck using parallels and comparisons of real life occurences to help illustrate his story and message. But the two books I d like to focus on in this paper are Of Mice and Men, and Grapes of Wrath. Steinbeck was born on February 7, 1902 in Salinas California. • 22. Mortal Women In The Odyssey The Odyssey a classic mythological poem composed by Homer. The Odyssey constructs a view of men, women, the divine, and the mortal. The men portrayed in the Odyssey tend to be dominant, heroic, and powerful. However, the women are given mixed character roles for example some are portrayed as submissive and meek where as others are divine and determined. Through the Odyssey we are exposed to many different views of women of both the divine and of the mortal. Yet, although we have the divine women and the mortal we are still projected with the idea of the men being in charge, and two hierarchy s one within the divine and the other within the mortal. Since the maids were disloyal to the household and Odysseus sentenced them to death. The maids were given a vulnerable, unimpressive and shameful death. • 23. Analysis Of `` House Of Sand And Fog `` By Andre Dubus IIi Alienation Throughout the novel House of Sand and Fog by Andre Dubus III, the recurring theme of alienation takes its toll on the lives of the two main characters: Kathy and Behrani. We see how the isolation of both characters not only has an effect on them, but also on the lives of others who matter most to them. Alienation is the act of being withdrawn or isolated from a life in which one is accustomed or should be accustomed to. The incidents of alienation demonstrated in the novel include, the relationship between each character and their families, Behrani and his family being forced out of their home country and living in America, and Kathy getting evicted from her family house. As we see these events occur throughout the book, we also learn that both characters will do whatever it takes to claim ownership of what they both call home. This drawn out battle over a piece of property ends up putting Kathy along with Lester behind bars, and with Behrani losing his son in the process. Dubus illustrates many scenes where both Kathy and Behrani isolate themselves from their families. For example, when Kathy is at the motel reminiscing of her phone calls with her mother, we see how Kathy alienates herself from her family when she notes how after Nick left, she would start lying about how well he was doing at his new job and how this used to be true (44). By not telling her mother that Nick had left her, this demonstrates a clear example of her seclusion from her ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Genetically Modified Organism Agriculture, a necessity for providing basic needs, has evolved tremendously since the first time it was practiced. When first started, agriculture was relatively simple: plant the seeds, water the seeds, and gather the end product. Now, agriculture has changed to include pesticides, herbicides, and synthetic fertilizers to produce and maintain higher yields. The Green Revolution in the 1940 s to 1970 s help modernize agriculture with high yielding varieties, better irrigation systems, and synthetic fertilizers. Without the Green Revolution, world hunger would have been a lot higher than it was in the past (Easterbrook 1997). The world is still a limited resource and the amount of fertile land that allows production of agriculture can only decrease from now. Current production of agriculture may not be able to keep up with the steady population growth of the developing countries. The population is projected to increase from roughly 7 billion currently to 9.1 billion by 2050, meaning that there will be 2 billion more mouths to feed (UNPD). Although all forms of oppression are consequential, often having a variety of overlapping aspects, gender oppression can be designated individually. Gender oppression differs from other forms of oppression as all other forms of oppression, such as racism and homophobia, can relate back to gender. In addition, gender oppression affects the largest sum of individuals overall. Woman is one of the two central sexes and women make up roughly half of the earth s population. This concept regarding the interconnection between social categories is known as intersectionality, which is discussed widely in Kimberlé Crenshaw s piece titled Demarginalizing the Intersection of Race and Sex: A Black Feminist Critique of Antidiscrimination Doctrine, Feminist Theory and Antiracist Politics . Crenshaw discusses several court cases in her piece in which it is illustrated that institutions such as Congress failed to take matters such as intersectionality into account (Crenshaw, 1989 p. 142). These digital pirates cause quite a controversy for the show`s industry, legitimate viewers, and the show runners themselves, even. Mixed thoughts, reactions, and even discrepancies in quantitative numbers shroud the perception and comprehension of modern digital piracy. Examining the culture of piracy, how and why people pirate content, as well as the legal and industrial components of piracy can provide a contextualized understanding of piracy in the digital age, and the future of piracy. Understanding technological and ethical factors that lead to piracy, and legal and industrial repercussions to digital piracy are essential to navigating a discussion about whether or not piracy has a great impact on industry or society as a whole. Defining digital piracy is the first and foremost step towards understanding its role in today s world. • 50. What Is The Myth Of Sisyphus The bus was silent, no one daring to speak. We had just suffered the first loss in more than 10 years to one of the competing schools to make it to the state tournament for tennis. This bus ride home from the tournament in Green Bay gave me sufficient time to reflect on my matches and on the sport as a whole. Tennis is a sport of repetition. You play points over and over again until a match is complete, matches until a tournament is complete, and then the whole process repeats a couple weeks later. This reminded me of the myth of Sisyphus. Sisyphus was a kind who upon his death was tasked with rolling a boulder up a hill. However, as soon as he pushed the stone to the top it rolled back down to the bottom and he had to start again. While this is seen as a punishment in the myth I see it as a blessing. ... This is a blessing because we have the free will to associate value to something inherently valueless and put effort and time into it to make ourselves better. So by giving Sisyphus this task to repeat endlessly for eternity, they actually blessed him by giving him something to attach meaning to. In the same way tennis gives me something to attach meaning to and better myself through a game that will not improve me academically or as a person.
