Kineococcus radiotolerans is a bacterium that can tolerate high levels of radiation and breaks down organic contaminants. It was found living in an area with gamma radiation levels between 0.18-3.5 Gy/h at the Savannah River Site in South Carolina. K. radiotolerans grows in clusters surrounded by an extracellular matrix and can use 5- and 6- carbon sugars and sugar alcohols for aerobic respiration. It has potential applications for cleaning up radioactive waste by degrading organic compounds.
