My First Lesson On The Battle Of Lexington And Concord
This week I only attended three days for block teaching. Monday was Columbus
Day so the school was closed and everyone had the day off. Friday I did not attend
because it was fall break for WIU so I decided to go home for the weekend. On
Tuesday the students worked on Cornell notes for several headings in their textbook.
Then on Wednesday I taught my first lessonon the battles of Lexington and Concord.
The students analyzed two primary source documents then as a class we discussed
their similarities and differences. The lesson went well despite the fact that two
thirds of the class was missing due to state testing. The fact that majority of the
class made me worried for the lesson I prepared for the following day because the
two lessons were designed to match up. However, I was pleasantly surprised that
Thursday s lesson went as smoothly as it did. The students stayed on task and were
focused so I did not have really any issues with classroom management. Since this
week was short and I taught two out of the three days I was present my teacher didn t

many controversial pieces written in regards to the true meaning and purpose of
authorship. Several French philosophers such as Roland Barthes and Michel Foucault

Death of the Author , has a strong belief in the removal of the author from a piece.
Barthes believed that once a book has been written there is no more author but instead
a scriptor and text which are both born simultaneously. Meaning that the text is a

multiple meanings dependent on a scriptors interpretation. On the other hand, French

Bars often provide one of the most open and accepting social atmospheres where
people go to hang out with friends, meet new people, watch sporting events, go on a
date, read a book, eat a meal, or sometimes just to get drunk. Drinking often causes
people to loosen up and engage in conversation or reveal personal information that
they probably wouldn t in any other environment. The influence of alcohol puts a
person in a vulnerable situation, so bar patrons typically want to drink in a place
they feel is accepting and protective. Diversity among, and the social interaction
between the clientele varies depending upon the type of bar. In my research, I have
observed the level of diversity and the nuances of social interaction in two distinct
types of bars. The Storehouse is a centrally located bar in Manhattan, falling under
the category of a cosmopolitan space. Conversely, Old Stanley s can be classified as
a neighborhood bar, acting as a more ethnocentric zone, frequented mostly by younger
whites who have recently populated the gentrifying neighborhood of Bushwick in the
borough of Brooklyn. While both bars share a general sense of security and goodwill
among its customers, the clientele and the ways they interact vary greatly between

William Bradford and William Byrd may share the same first name but that is the
length of the similarities between these two colonial writers. Bradford, a puritan
writer, valued religious freedom above all else, often making the connection back to
God and religion in his writings. In his text, Of Plymouth Plantation, Bradford uses
his personal experience to give an account of the first pilgrims and the hardships they
faced in their journey to colonize America. On the other hand, Byrd takes a more
satirical approach, using humor and wit to criticize those same early American

Bradford uses a bland, matter of fact style of writing which is common for the time
period in which he lived. He often avoids long, drawn out literary techniques
instead focusing on clearly stating his opinions. His tone is especially evident in
his description of the Pilgrim s journey across the ocean, According to the usual
manner, many were afflicted with seasickness (Bradford). Bradford chooses to
express events as simply as he can, allowing himself to ghost over tedious details to
instead focus on his underlying purpose. Unlike Bradford, Byrd prefers to make
use of a more sarcastic tone in his text, often taking his descriptions into great
detail. He pokes fun at influential and important events, often removing the severity
from situations with a humours flare. Several repeated misadventures of this kind
did for some time allay the itch of sailing to this new world, but the distemper
broke out again (Byrd). Byrd s writing is compiled of witty lines and blunt remarks
that prove his distaste for the early American settlers. It is clear he disapproves of
the Pilgrim s methods but his words lack the malicious undertone that is clear in
Bradford s text when he mentions practices he does not fully agree
