I was born in Germany where Football (soccer) is one of the most important things.
I have played soccer since I was four years old and it has been my favorite sport. I
have played for many teams including: the Chase City Ymca, Southern Storm,
Mecklenburg United, and currently play for Danville Soccer Club. In all of my
years of playing my greatest weakness is myself and my confidence in my skill. I
never thought I would ever want to leave the gameuntil I made the High School
soccer team. One of my favorite soccer players is Pele a phenomenal superstar
from Brazil. Pele spent his childhood and life by one rule to always love the game
no matter the score or the day and to always show respect to the opponent, your
team, and referees. This made him not only a great player but a great ambassador for

My first year on the team went fairly well I scored two goals and got a fairish
amount of playing time and the coach was great...when we were winning. We lost
out to Nottaway in the Quarter final of the James River District. The coach might
have thought we won with the way I acted because I felt like the luckiest person in

Looking at these figures we can see that with the demand the prices continued to
rise. Also the war in Iraq contributed to the increase prices. If we were to look at the
price of a barrel of crude oil today it would top all of these prior years at $71.17 a

the income and wages of the American worker s remains the same. With the
continued increase in the demand for oil, the financial future for OPEC looks very

According to William Tecumseh Sherman, he is tired and sick of war. It is only
those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the
wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell. This
statement is self explanatory; the nature of war is reckless. Yes, when experiencing
war, some soldiers may come across gratifying sounds of larks, song birds, which
remind them of ebullient moments. Nevertheless, is brutally fighting really worth
that? Roughly ten million soldiers lost their lives in World War I, along with seven
million civilians; also, many soldiers experienced shell shock, which is a
psychological disturbance caused by war. As a result of the heinous and atrocious
experiences that many were put through, this inspired many poets to record their
remembrances. Although war may bring memories of happiness because of the
pleasing sounds, war should be considered a crime regardless of how necessary or
justified it seems because war leads to mental anguish due to the memories of
physical pain, soldiers being frightened because of unexpected occurrences and
ferocious deaths.
In the poem Mental Cases by Wilfred Owen, Owen describes in stark detail the
ghastly physical symptoms and memories that led to long lasting mental torment. A

This is a conflict she has with herself while she is becoming an adult. Briony
invites readers into her feelings but later contradicts herself as she hides all her
emotions from view. Since she is still a child she tends to take things for their
literal meaning. However, she is ecstatic to become an adult since she is
determined to use feelings in her stories which would help her stories to begin the
transformation from princes and princesses to mature topics. Briony loses her
innocence when she discovered that reality is not like the stories she read when
growing up. Her innocence is taken from her when she realizes that by casting
Robbie as a villain in her plot and by forcing him to be a villain in real life has

they accurate indicators of a student s academic abilities? Standardized tests are used
to measure a student s academic abilities, and overall knowledge. In theory, a student
s skills can be determined by examining the limited data collected from the test.
However, standardized test do not fully represent a student s abilities, and cumulative
knowledge. Many factors may affect the validity of the scores, and the accuracy of
the assessment. Instructor s teaching directly for the test, being able to guess on
multiple choice questions, examining only test scores, and ignoring other academic
factors contribute to the biased representation of students academic abilities.
Because instructors are teaching directly for the test, the data collected may not be an
accurate representation of the student s true abilities. As standardized test grow in
popularity among the school system, the pressure to achieve high scores rapidly
builds. The importance of high scores goes beyond individual students performances,
and teacher evaluations. Serious repercussions could result from poor scores, or
performances. For example, schools that continue to fail to improve may be closed,

Stuck between a Rock and a Horse Race
No family is perfect, family is family, their love will always be there. At least till you
fall off a rocking horse or hit by a few rocks. What I am referring to are these two
short stories The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, and The Rocking Horse Winner by D.
H. Lawrence. Now for a brief overview of both these unsettling stories. The Lottery
is a story of a small town basically consuming a member of its own community, It s
like a smoothie of Dismay with figurative cannibalism, a bit of social commentary,
a drop of peer pressure, with a twist of tradition. The Rocking Horse Winner Is like
a real delicious literary drama seasoned with a dash of social commentary and a
pinch of the supernatural. It follows the short and tragic life of a boy named Paul,
who thinks he has remarkable luck after realizing he can predict racehorse winners by
furiously riding his rocking horse until he reaches a trance like state. Unfortunately,
Paul s luck begins to kill him...Literally.
Thesis Statement The Rocking Horse Winner and The Lottery delivers two
different uses of the conflict, theme, and tone. Though, the authors use some
similar approaches to grab the reader s attention by the things the characters do,
say and want. The conflict in the two short stories are diverse in almost every way,
yet they both lead to the death of a character in the end. In The Rocking Horse
Winner the conflict of the story was instantly clear. The struggle relates to the
Monetary challenges of the family. The need to gain more money lies at the middle
of all the conflict that arises in the story. Paul knows his mother desires more
money, which encourages him to try to be lucky . Paul can foresee the winning race
horse after riding his rocking horse. Which lead to Paul covertly betting on horse
races, and his uncle and Basset the gardener teaming up with him. Paul got money
for his mother; but in the end, it wasn t enough. The pressure began to effect Paul, as
