This document discusses intelligence and emotional intelligence. It defines intelligence as the capacity for logical thought and effective problem solving. Emotional intelligence involves the ability to recognize and manage one's own emotions and the emotions of others. Several methods are described for measuring intelligence, including IQ tests. IQ scores are categorized into different levels from very superior to profoundly mentally retarded. Emotional intelligence is measured by EQ and involves self-awareness, managing emotions, and recognizing emotions in others. Strategies for improving emotional intelligence include self-evaluation, handling stress calmly, and considering the impact of one's words.
1. Intelligence
Intelligence is described as:
“The Global capacity of the individual
to act purposefully, to think
rationally and to deal effectively with
the environment.”
It is a problem solving ability.
2. Methods of measuring intelligence
1. Intelligence quotient (IQ) = Mental age divided
by chronological age and multiplied by 100.
2. Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale-revised
(WAIS-R)
3. Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children-III
(WISC-III).
Assessment of IQ includes assessment of
mathematical, verbal, spatial and mechanical
proficiency.
3. Levels of IQ
IQ Description % OF Population
130 and above Very Superior 2.2
120-129 Superior 6.7
110-119 Bright normal 16.1
85-109 Average 59.1
70-84 Borderline 13.6
55-69 Mildly mentally retarded 2.1
40-54 Moderately mentally retarded 0.1
25-39 Severely mentally retarded 0.003
Below 25 Profoundly mentally retarded 0.0000005
4. Emotional intelligence
• It is defined as:
“The capacity and ability of the individual (1) to
recognize ones own and others emotions and (2)to
put them under the control of reason and (3)to use
them to advantage”.
According to Aristotle, E.I. is the ability
“to be angry with the right person, to the right
degree, at the right time, for the right purpose and
in the right way”
E.I. is measured by Emotional Quotient (E.Q.).
5. Components of emotional intelligence
1. Self awareness: means recognizing and
monitoring one’s own feelings as they occur
moment to moment.
2. Managing emotions: means having appropriate
emotional reaction i.e. modulating negative
emotions e.g. Anxiety, Anger, depression etc.
3. Motivating one self: means controlling ones
own emotions and keeping the goals of life on
the priority.
4. Recognizing emotions in other: means empathy.
5. Handling the emotions of others.
6. Emotional intelligence and IQ
• Human brain contains two minds i.e. two kinds of
intelligence-rational and emotional.
• They both interact to constitute our mental life.
• They are interdependent and integrated with each other.
• Their neuronal circuits are interconnected with each other
to some extend.
• Rational intelligence is depended on neocortex-prefrontal
lobe.
• Emotional intelligence is depended on limbic system-
amygdala.
• IQ can be measured reliably. But there is no test to
measure Emotional intelligence.
7. Strategy to improve emotional
intelligence
• E.I. is a set of skills that can be measured, learned and
enhanced through following steps:
1. Observe how you react to people i.e. rushing to
judgment, anxiety, anger, irritability etc.
>put your self in the place of other person and perceive
his feelings about you.
2. Look at your work environment. Do you seek reward for
your task?
> follow humility i.e. remaining confident of your self and
giving chance to other to shine.
3. Do a self evaluation i.e. becoming aware of your
weaknesses.
>work on your weaknesses.
8. Strategies to improve emotional
intelligence
4. Observe your reaction at stressful situations i.e.
becoming upset, blaming others or becoming angry
to others
>keep yourself calm and relax at such stressful
situations.
5. Taking responsibility of your actions
>if hurting someone apologize directly and
immediately.
6. Examine carefully the effects your words and
actions before time.
