TOPIC :Production guidelines
for Beetroot
PRESENTED TO:
DR. Nirmala. K. S.
Asst. professor of Horticulture
Dept.of Horticulture

Scientific name: Beta vulgaris
Common names: Beetroot, table beet,
garden or common beet
Family: Chenopodiaceae
Origin: Europe and Africa
General aspects Cultivation
practices
 1. Propagation & Soil preparation
 2. Planting .
 3. Fertilization & Irrigation
 4. Weed control & Pest control
 5. Disease control & Other cultivation practices
 6. Harvesting
1.Propagation
 Beetroot is propagated by seed.
2. Bed preparation
 The seedbed should be well prepared by
ploughing 15 to 30 cm deep to break up clods.
 The soil should also be as level as possible,
enough moisture and be free of unrotted plant
material.
BED PREPARATION
3. Sowing
 Date of sowing:10/07/2013
 Line sowing
 Depth of sowing is 1.5 – 2cm.
 The sowing times differ with production areas.
 Seed rate : 20gm/25sq.m
 Spacing : 30 10cm.
 Date of germination:17/07/2013 to 24/07/2013
4. Manure & fertilizers
 Vermicompost : 2kg/25sq.m
 FYM : 2kg/25sq.m
 N:P:K 40:120:70kg/ha
 But we applied 575gm combinely (100gm urea,
300gm SSP & 175gm MOP)
 “N” is split into 2(1/2 as basal dose & remaining ½ as
top dressing after 3-4 weeks of sowing)
5. Irrigation
 The soil should never be allowed to become dry
and it should be kept moist to a depth of 20 to
25 cm.
 Irrigate the field immediately after sowing for
better germination.
 Subsequent irrigation is done once in two days
for better growth.
IRRIGATION
6. Weed control
 All weeds between the rows must be
removed by hand to avoid damaging the
roots.
 1st weeding is done 3 weeks after planting.
 2nd is at the time of earthing up.
 Weeding is done to avoid the competition
with crop.
WEEDING
7. Thinning
 Thinned to a spacing of 10cm at the stage of 2-3
leaves to maintain the proper spacing.
 It helps to increase the size of the beetroots.
 To remove the diseased plants.
8. Earthing up
 It is done to avoid the exposure of roots.
 And also to avoid weeds.
 To give support to the plant.
 Promoting the desired growth, this may encourage
the development of roots.
EARTHING UP
PEST AND DISEASES
9. Pest
 1.Web worm:
Controlled by spraying
chlorpyriphos @ 2.5 ml/lit of
water.
 2.Semi looper:
It is a minor pest so we
neglected it.
 3.Defoliator:
Controlled by natural fungus.
Affected leaves
Defoliator
10. Physiological disorder
1.Heart rot:
It is notified minorly, so not taken any measurement.
HEART ROT
11. Harvesting
 Maturity of the crop is indicated
by colour of leaf.
 Done after 70 days.(16/09/2013)
 Before harvesting light irrigation is
given.
 Harvested manually.
12. Yield : 32kg/25sq.m
13. Marketed rate : 8Rs/kg
14.Income : 32 8 256Rs
