smoothly. These planes can not only be seen as stepping stones in a pilot s aviation timeline, but
can also be viewed through history as landmarks on the evolution of the Naval Aviation program
as a whole. The shifts in technology and needs of the program can be seen when the history of
the multitude of training aircraft is analyzed. Naval Aviation began in 1911 once it was proven
that an aircraft could launch and be recovered by or near a ship. The first plane the Navy
ordered was the A 1 Triad, built by Glenn Curtiss. Along with some experimental tasks, the main
mission of the A 1 was to train new pilots, starting the extensive line of training aircraft. The A 1,
along with all of the early aircraft in the Navy were very simple flying machines, with low power
and simple technology. The Triad, which vaguely resembled the Wright flyer, was only 925
pounds with a 75 horsepower Curtiss V 8 engine powering a pusher propeller that allowed for a
maximum airspeed of 60 mph (A 1 Triad, 2014) (Grossnick, n.d.). In 1914, Glenn Curtiss created a
new aircraft for the Navy, the JN 3 Jenny , with a propeller that pulled instead of pushed, a tractor
design. It was originally designed for battle missions, but after copious amounts of testing, it was
found that the plane was incredibly unstable.

The Truth to the The Things They Carried When reading Tim O Brien s The Things They Carried,
there were many truths that were presented and while some were actual facts, others were fictional.
The author uses the art of storytelling instead of mere recital of facts, generic when telling a war
story, as a way to express unexplainable emotions. O Brien shows that the truth is unimportant in
communicating human emotions through stories because there are some emotions that can not be
explained through mere facts. In his collection of short shorties, O Brien writes in a style that is
very vivid and often times causes the audience to find themselves accepting the events and details
of these stories as the truth. O Brien contrasts the truth to fiction by reminding the audience that
within these short stories, the details are not the truth and are there to demonstrate the human
emotions that can not be communicated as absolute facts. It is in the Good Form that O brien
