• “Tell me about Islam” Islam is built upon five
things:
• Bear witness that
there is none deserving
of worship except
Allah, and that
Muhammad is His
servant and
Messenger.

• And to establish
Swolah (the obligatory
five daily worship or
specific devotion).

• And to pay the Zakah
(obligatory tax upon
the wealth).

things:
• And to make
pilgrimage (Hajj) to the
House (Ka’ba in
Makkah) if you are
able.

things:
• And to observe fasting
daily in the month of
Ramadhan.

• Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without
Faith is mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy
• Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with
IHSAN which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve
Allah s.w.t .
• Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his
submission to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).
ALL THREE ASPECTS ARE TO BE DEVELOPED IN TANDEM ACCORDINGLY
WITHOUT FOCUSING AT SPECIALIZATION UNTIL AT LATER STAGE
WHEN ESSENTIAL BASIC KNOWLEDGE IS WELL-ESTABLISHED

Elucidation of the
word IIMAAN
Belief / Faith

What is ‫ان‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ي‬ِ‫إ‬ IIMAAN?
• IIMAAN is belief in or faith of something beyond sense
perception, termed as “‫ب‬ْ‫ي‬
َ
‫غ‬
ْ
‫ال‬” (al-ghaib), meaning “the
unseen”.
• It is derived from the root word “‫امن‬” which also means
“safety, peace, security, protection”
• It denote: certainty of the ultimate truth, adherence to it
instils sense of security in him from doubts, uncertainty,
restlessness etc.

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan ”cannot be by mere blind
acceptance devoid of proof or substantiation i.e. Believe or
faith must be with knowledge (`ilm).

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan ”cannot be by mere blind
"And do not follow (pursue) anything of which you
have no knowledge: verily (your) hearing and sight
and heart - all of them - will be called to account
for it (on Judgement Day).“
(Q: Bani Israil : 17 :36)

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan” cannot be by mere blind

What is “IIMAAN (al-Mufassal)”?
(The Detailed Belief) “Al-iimaan is that you:
● Solemnly believe in Allah;
● His angels;
● His Books,
● His Messengers;
● In the Afterlife;

“Behold thy Lord said to the angels: "I will create a
vicegerent on earth." They said "Wilt thou place therein one
who will make mischief therein and shed blood? Whilst we
do celebrate Thy praises and glorify Thy holy (name)?"
He (Allah) said: "I know what ye know not."
(Qur’an: Surah al-Baqarah: 2: 30)

REFLECTION
❑ Allah wishes to honour mankind over the Angels,
despite the fact that mankind may also be capable of
mischief and shedding blood.
❑ Though it is the angels who are pure and in constant
devotion to Allah, it is mankind that was chosen.

REFLECTION
Justice would demand that there should be some
basis or reason for their deserving it.
❑ Does it therefore meant that all of mankind would
deserve the honour in perpetuity (forever)?

“It is We who have placed you with authority on earth, and
provided you therein with means for the fulfilment of your
life: small are the thanks that ye give!
It is We who created you and gave you shape; then We bade
the angels prostrate to Adam, and they prostrated, not so
Iblis; he refused to be of those who bow down.”
(Qur’an: Surah al-A’raf: 7: 10-11)

“(Allah) said: "what prevented thee from bowing down when
I commanded thee?" He (Iblis) said: "I am better than he:
thou didst create me from fire, and him from clay."
(Allah) said: "Get thee down from this: it is not for thee to be
arrogant here: get out, for thou art of the meanest (of
creatures).”

“He (Iblis) said: "Give me respite till the day they
are raised up.“
(Allah) said: "Be thou amongst those who have
respite.”

“He (Iblis) said: "Because thou hast thrown me out of the
Way, lo! I will lie in wait for them on Thy straight Way.
Then will I assault them from before them and behind them,
from their right and their left: nor wilt Thou find, in most of
them, gratitude (for Thy mercies).
(Allah) said: "Get out from this, disgraced and expelled. If
any of them follow thee Hell will I fill with you all.”

REFLECTION
❑ Mankind’s test began when Iblis, after being accursed
by Allah because of his arrogance and disobedience,
requested to be given the opportunity to tempt mankind.
He was in fact challenging Allah’s Justice & Wisdom.

What about the Jinn (spirits)?

Allah SWT has given this Du’a , also as general guideline:

“O my Lord (Allah)! I seek refuge in You from the (evil) whispering of
satan, and I seek refuge in You from their ever being present with me.”
(Qur’an: Mu’minun: 23: 97-98)

MAKING DU’A TO ALLAH

Allaa-hum-ma -in-naka sal-latw-twa ‘alay-naa ‘a-duw-
wan ba-swee-ron bi- ’u-yuu-bi-naa,
Mutw-twali-’an ‘alaa - ‘au-ro-tinaa, ya-raa-naa huwa wa-
qo-bii-luhu min hai - thu laa-na-raa-hum,
Allaa-hum-ma fa - ai-yis-hu min-naa kamaa ai-yas-tahu
min roH-matik, Wa qon- nitw-hu min-naa- kamaa qon-
natw - tahu min - ‘af-wik, Wa- ba-’id bai-nanaa - wa bai-
nahu kamaa - ba-’ad - ta – bai -nahu - wa- bai-na - jan-
natik, In-naka ‘a-laa - kul-li shai - ’inq - qo-deer.

MAKING DU’A TO ALLAH

“O Allah! You have place upon us an enemy who can see our
privacy and our shortcomings, whereas he and his kind spy upon
us from places which we are unable to see them.
O Allah! Disappoint their hopes towards us, just as You have made
them disappointed in hoping to get Your Mercy (Blessings).
Make them despair (in attaining their plans) towards us, just as
You made them despair from seeking Your Forgiveness.
Keep them away (distance) from us, just as You made them to be
far-away (distance) from Your Paradise.
Verily, You (O Allah) is Most Powerful over everything.

REFLECTION
❑ Iblis’ arrogance and enmity towards Adam a.s. and all
of mankind, became a cause, for which Allah puts us all,
mankind as well as the jinn, to a test on this temporary
life on earth.
Reward and punishment, surely would be for
those who deserve them, not granted arbitrarily.

“Then did Satan make them slip from the (Garden) and get
them out of the state (of felicity) in which they had been. We
said: "Get ye down all (ye people) with enmity between
yourselves. On earth will be your dwelling place and your
means of livelihood for a time."

“Then learnt Adam from his Lord words of inspiration and his
Lord turned toward him; for He is Oft-Returning Most
Merciful.
We said: "Get ye down all from here; and if, as is sure, there
comes to you guidance from Me, whosoever follows My
guidance on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.
(Qur’an: Surah al-Baqarah 2: 37-38)

“ Hallowed be He (Allah) in whose hand all dominion rests,
since He has the power to will anything: He Who created
death as well as life, so that He might put you to a test [and
thus show] which of you is best in conduct, and [make you
realize that] He (Allah) alone is almighty, truly forgiving.”
(Qur’an: Surah al-Mulk: 67: 1-2)

“Whoever is guided is only guided for [the benefit of] his soul. And
whoever errs only errs against it. And no bearer of burdens will
bear the burden of another. And never would We punish until We
sent a messenger.”
(Qur’an: al-Isra’: 17: 15)

REFLECT ON THE SIMILARITY WITH
SOME BIBLICAL RECORDS
AS FOUND IN THE OLD TESTAMENT
“ The soul that sinneth it shall die. The son shall
not bear the iniquity (sins) of the father, neither
shall the father bear the iniquity (sins) of the son,
the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon
him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be
upon him… ”
(Ezekiel 18: 20)

“… But the wicked will turn from all his sins that he
hath committed, and keep all my statutes and do that
which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall
not die.”
(Ezekiel 18 : 21)
(Note similarity with the Islamic concept of ‘TAUBAH’ here :
consistent with Islam. Unfortunately later Christian Church
leaders have replaced this with their concept of the ‘original sin’ ,
‘blood redemption’ and ‘vicarious atonement’.)

your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then
to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of
Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as
the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no
partner to Me (i.e. commit no Shirk), I would bring you
forgiveness as great as those sins.’ ”

Turn ye to your Lord (in repentance) and bow to His [Will],
before the Penalty comes on you: After that ye shall not be

“O ye who believe! enter into Islam whole-heartedly (fully);
and follow not the footsteps of the Evil One; for he is to you
an avowed enemy.”

“O ye who believe! (Be conscious of and ) Fear Allah and let every
soul look to what (provision) he has sent forth for the morrow.
Yea, (be conscious of and) fear Allah: for Allah is well-acquainted
with (all) that ye do. And be ye not like those who forgot Allah;
and He made them forget their own souls! such are the rebellious
transgressors!
Not equal are the Companions of the Fire and the Companions
of the Garden: it is the Companions of the Garden, that will achieve
Felicity.”

“Every soul is bound to taste death (MAWT) : but only on
the Day of Resurrection (YAUM-AL-QIYAA-MAH) will you
be requited in full [for whatever you have done] -
whereupon he that shall be drawn away from the fire
(AN-NAAR) and brought into paradise (AL-JANNAH) will
indeed have gained a triumph (FAAZ): for the life of this
world (HAYAA-TID-DUNYA) is nothing but an enjoyment
of self-delusion (GHURUR).”

“O you who have believed, shall I guide you to a transaction that will
save you from a painful punishment? [It is that] you (TU’-MINUU)
believe in Allah and His Messenger and (TU-JAA-HIDUU) strive in the
cause of Allah (SABEE-LILLAAH) with your wealth (AM-WAA-LIKUM)
and your lives (AN-FUSIKUM). That is best for you, if you should
know. He will forgive for you your sins and admit you to gardens
beneath which rivers flow and pleasant dwellings in gardens of
perpetual residence. That is the great attainment (FAUZUL-’AZEEM).”

rotted and dispersed like dust can be resurrected back
again?”
• – But, they conveniently forget about how they were
first created ... In fact seemingly from nothing ... how

“ Was he not a drop of fluid which gushed forth? Then he
became a clot; then Allah shaped and fashioned, and made
of him a pair, the male and female? Is not He (Who does so)
able to bring the dead to life?”

comes to it Our command by night or by day, and We make it
as a harvest clean-mown, as if it had not flourished yesterday.
Thus do We explain in detail the signs for a people who give

RELEVANT WARNING FOR US ALL
(Qur’an: Takathur: 102: 1-8)
YOU ARE OBSESSED by greed for more and more until you go down to
your graves.
Nay, in time you will come to understand! And once again: Nay, in time
you will come to understand!
Nay, if you could but understand [it] with an understanding [born] of
certainty, you would indeed, most surely, behold the blazing fire [of hell]!
In the end you will indeed, most surely, behold it with the eye of
certainty: and on that Day you will most surely be called to account for
[what you did with] the boon of life!

OUR TIME OF RETURN TO HEREAFTER
Our body will be given the complete wash (ghusl’)

Our body will be wrapped or shrouded (kafan)

Our body will be prayed (solat) over before burial

Our body will be transported to the cemetery

Our body will be lowered into the grave

Our body will be placed in a niche in the grave

The grave will be covered with earth

Du’a (supplications) by family and friends before being left on our own (alone)
with whatever provisions (good or bad deeds).

Our physical remains will be in the grave while our soul awaits in intermediary
spiritual world (‘alam barzakh) awaiting the Day of resurrection

َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬َ َّ‫ٱّلل‬َ‫ال‬ُّ‫ب‬ ِ‫ح‬‫ه‬‫ي‬‫ف‬‫ه‬‫م‬‫ٱل‬َ‫ين‬ِ‫د‬ِ‫س‬

"But seek, with the (wealth) which Allah has bestowed
on thee, the Home of the Hereafter, nor forget thy
portion in this world: but do thou good, as Allah has
been good to thee, and seek not (occasions for)
mischief in the land: for Allah loves not those who do
mischief."
(Qur’an: Qasas: 28: 77)

َ‫س‬‫ئ‬ِ‫ب‬ َ‫لو‬‫ه‬‫د‬‫ا‬َ‫ه‬ِ‫م‬‫ٱل‬
“Be not deceived by the [uninhibited] movement of the
disbelievers throughout the land: [It is but] a small enjoyment;
then their [final] refuge is Hell, and wretched is the resting
place(!”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 196-197)

“On the other hand, for those who (are conscious and) fear their
Lord, are Gardens with rivers flowing beneath: therein are they to
dwell (for ever) a gift,― from the presence of Allah; and that which is
in the presence of Allah is the best (bliss) for the righteous.”
(Qur’an: Aali ‘Imran: 3: 198)

“And whatever good ye do (be sure) Allah knows it. And take a
provision (with you) for the journey, but the best of provisions is Taqwa
(God-consciousness/ reverential fear of God). So have Taqwa , O ye
that are wise! .”
(Qur’an: Baqarah : 2: 197)

“Work for your worldly needs, as though you are going
to live forever, and strive (also to prepare) for your Hereafter,
as though you are going to die tomorrow.”

“What I have forbidden to you, avoid; what I have ordered you
[to do], do as much of it as you can. It was only their excessive
questioning and their disagreeing with their Prophets that
destroyed those who came before you.”

PROPHET MUHAMMAD

“Be conscious of (be fearful of transgressing against) Allah
(TAQWA) wherever you may be, and follow-up whatever
misdeeds you may have committed (as reparation) by
doing (more) righteous deeds, (for these) shall efface
them (the negative effect of these misdeeds), and interact
with people in the best manner of disposition (i.e. adopt a
noble character (AKHLAQ HASSANAH) - towards people).”

PROPHET MUHAMMAD

“When a son of Adam (any person – male/female) dies, his
ability to do any more good deeds ceases (i.e. his ability to strive
for gaining merits [rewards] stops) – except for three things
(which shall continue adding rewards to his credit):
[1] charity in perpetuity (which continues to benefit people
and others),
[2] ‘ilm (knowledge he had taught to others) which continues
to be beneficial (benefited),
[3] a righteous child who continues to make Du’a (pray) for
him.”

PROPHET MUHAMMAD

“The dead (Muslim) in the grave is like one drowning and in need
of help. He is waiting for the prayer (Du’a) from his father, his
mother, his children and his trusted closed friends. When a prayer
(Du’a) reaches him, this is more beloved to him than the whole
world and what is in it. Verily Allah Most Esteemed and Glorious,
when granting the prayer (Du’a) from those living to the people of
the grave, it is as big as mountains. And know that amongst the
gifts from those alive given to those who have died are through
ISTIGHFAR (asking Allah’s forgiveness for them) and SADAQAH
(deeds of charity) made upon their names.”

PROPHET MUHAMMAD

“Seven groups of people will be given shade by Allah SWT on the Day
where there will be no shade except His shade:
[1] A just leader (Imaa-mun-’adlun);
[2] Youth who occupies himself to serving Allah (In worship - devotion);
[3] A person whose heart is attached to the mosque, that whenever he
comes out from there he yearns to return to it again;
[4] Two people who love each other because of Allah. Whenever they
meet it is because of Allah and when they depart it is because of Allah;
[5] A person who engages in the remembrance of Allah alone by himself
and shed tears;
[6] A person who were tempted by a pretty and glamorous lady but he
refused (sinning with) her by saying : ’I fear Allah!’ ; and
[7] A person who gives charity secretly, such that what his left hand gives
his right hand does not know.”

In keeping with Islam’s commandment to be with community (UMMAH),
beginning with the important family institution, strengthening silatur-rahmi
(bond of kith and kinship), to be vigilant and cautious of whom we take as
intimate friend, acquaintance and life-partners.

❖ PROVISION FOR THE JOURNEY
Utilizing our capabilities (IKHTIYAR), seeking the goodness and whatever
Allah may bestow while in this life the livelihood (RIZQ ) through Halal
means, and utilizing them as an act of serving Allah by being good. A good
person is one who is most beneficial towards others.
❖ WHAT ‘TREASURE’ TO BE BROUGHT BACK TO THE FINAL DESTINATION
Surely, there must be a reason for our being put on this life journey. Thus
Islam teaches us what are we suppose to seek in this world which we can
bring back; what can benefit us when we cross-over the threshold of
death, into the intermediary world of the grave, and inevitably be made
to be accountable on the Day of Judgment.

“O YOU who have attained to faith! Remain conscious
of Allah (TAQWA); and let every human being look to
what he sends ahead for the morrow! And [once
again]: Remain conscious of Allah (TAQWA), for Allah
is fully aware of all that you do; and be not like those
who are oblivious of Allah, and whom He therefore
causes to be oblivious of [what is good for] their own
selves: [for] it is they, they who are truly depraved! “
(Qur’an: Hashr: 59: 18-19)

“ When you see that Allah bestows upon the servant (a person)
the worldly things which he loves, although he is upon
disobedience (towards Allah), verily that is ISTIDRAJ (which only
cause him to be deceived and go further from Allah’s pleasure).”

“So when they forgot that by which they had been reminded,
We opened to them the doors of every [good] thing until, when
they rejoiced in that which they were given, We seized them
suddenly, and they were [then] in despair.”
(Qur’an: An-’am: 6: 44)

“The example of [this] worldly life is but like rain which We
have sent down from the sky that the plants of the earth
absorb - [those] from which men and livestock eat - until,
when the earth has taken on its adornment and is beautified
and its people suppose that they have capability over it, there
comes to it Our command by night or by day, and We make it
as a harvest (clean-mown), as if it had not flourished
yesterday. Thus do We explain in detail the signs for a people
who give thought.”
