Prophet, the servant and Messenger of Allah,

• “Tell me about Islam” Islam is built upon five
things:
• Bear witness that
there is none deserving
of worship except
Allah, and that
Muhammad is His
servant and
Messenger.

• And to establish
Swolah (the obligatory
five daily worship or
specific devotion).

• And to pay the Zakah
(obligatory tax upon
the wealth).

things:
• And to make
pilgrimage (Hajj) to the
House (Ka’ba in
Makkah) if you are
able.

things:
• And to observe fasting
daily in the month of
Ramadhan.

Iman (belief) is that

Al-Ihsan” (excellence)

(ATTESTATION TO THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF GOD)
• Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without
Faith is mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy
• Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with
IHSAN which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve
Allah s.w.t .
• Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his
submission to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).
ALL THREE ASPECTS ARE TO BE DEVELOPED IN TANDEM ACCORDINGLY
WITHOUT FOCUSING AT SPECIALIZATION UNTIL AT LATER STAGE
WHEN ESSENTIAL BASIC KNOWLEDGE IS WELL-ESTABLISHED

Elucidation of the
word IIMAAN
Belief / Faith

What is ‫ان‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ي‬ِ‫إ‬ IIMAAN?
• IIMAAN is belief in or faith of something beyond sense
perception, termed as “‫ب‬ْ‫ي‬
َ
‫غ‬
ْ
‫ال‬” (al-ghaib), meaning “the
unseen”.
• It is derived from the root word “‫امن‬” which also means
“safety, peace, security, protection”
• It denote: certainty of the ultimate truth, adherence to it
instils sense of security in him from doubts, uncertainty,
restlessness etc.

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan ”cannot be by mere blind
acceptance devoid of proof or substantiation i.e. Believe or
faith must be with knowledge (`ilm).

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan ”cannot be by mere blind
"And do not follow (pursue) anything of which you
have no knowledge: verily (your) hearing and sight
and heart - all of them - will be called to account
for it (on Judgement Day).“
(Q: Bani Israil : 17 :36)

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan” cannot be by mere blind
• Three sources for knowledge:
[1] Five sensory perceptions – ‫الحواس‬‫الخمسة‬ ;
[2] Reasoning – ‫ل‬ْ‫ق‬‫ع‬;
[3] True report – ‫ر‬َ‫ب‬‫ا‬َ‫خ‬‫ق‬ِ‫د‬‫ا‬َ‫ص‬

What is “IIMAAN (al-Mufassal)”?
(The Detailed Belief) “Al-iimaan is that you:
● Solemnly believe in Allah;
● His angels;
● His Books,
● His Messengers;
● In the Afterlife;
● In the Decree, the good & bad, all
comes from (the eternal knowledge
of) Allah Most Exalted.

The sixth aspect of Faith (Iimaan) required in the
Attestation to the Absolute Oneness of Allah (Tawheed)

MESSAGE OF THE QUR’AN

“No calamity befalls except by Allah's leave (permission). And
whosoever believes in Allah, He guides his heart. And Allah is
Knower of all things.
Obey Allah and obey His messenger; but if ye turn away, then the
duty of Our messenger is only to convey (the message) plainly.
Allah! There is no God save Him. In Allah, therefore, let believers
put their trust.”
(Qur’an: Taghabun: 64: 11-13)

“ Allah! There is no God save Him, the Alive, the Eternal. Neither
slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. Unto Him belongs
whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth.
Who is he that intercedes with Him save by His leave? He
knows that which is in front of them and that which is behind
them, while they encompass nothing of His knowledge except
what He wills. His throne includes the heavens and the earth,
and He is never weary of preserving them. He is the Sublime,
the Tremendous.”
(Qur’an: Baqarah: 2: 255)

MAN’S LIMITED

• Man’s knowledge is only regarding what has happened or is
happening.

will occur, or what his fate will be.

• Yet, he knows things do occur according to certain laws of
cause and effect (sunna-tullaah). And that Allah has given him
free-will to participate in determining his destiny.

• This free-will is termed, “ikhtiyar”

“good” and “akhyar” - “better”

❑ Therefore the freedom given to man to determine for
themselves their destiny, is only in choosing to do good.
Although he may abuse this privilege and if he chose to
do bad, he is said to have committed “zulm”
(injustice) to himself.
RESPONSIBILITY
‫م‬ْ‫ل‬‫ه‬‫ظ‬

❑ Therefore the freedom given to man to determine for
themselves their destiny, is only in choosing to do good.
Although he may abuse this privilege and if he chose to
do bad, he is said to have committed “zulm”
(injustice) to himself.
❑ Thus, man is to be responsible for his choices in his life
as well as face consequences for his neglect and abuse.

Therefore the freedom given to man to determine for
themselves their destiny, is only in choosing to do
good. Although he may abuse this privilege and if
he chose to do bad, he is said to have committed
“zulm” ‫م‬ْ‫ل‬‫ه‬‫ظ‬(injustice) to himself.
Thus, man is to be responsible for his choices in his life
ALTHOUGH MAN’S CHOICE AND ABILITY TO DO
WHATEVER ACTION IS WITH ALLAH’S WILL OR
PERMISSION (MA-SHI-A ),
YET MAN’S CHOICE TO ABUSE AND COMMIT WRONG IS
NOT WITH ALLAH’S APPROVAL (LAM YARDHA )
PERMISSION DOES NOT EQUAL APPROVAL.

BIS – MIL – LAAHI – WAL – HAM – DU – LIL – LAA-HI,
WAL – KHAY – RU - WASH – SHAR - RU
BI – MA – SHI – ATIL - LAAH
In the Name of Allah, Praise be to Allah, Good and evil are by
the Will (i.e. they can happen only by the permission) of Allah.

“ Verily! We create man from a drop of mingled sperm, in
order to test him; so We gave him (gifts of) hearing,
sight. Verily! We have shown him the Way, whether he be
grateful or ungrateful i.e. disbelieving (rests on his will).”
(Qur’an: Al-Insan:76: 2-3)

ِ‫س‬ْ‫ف‬َ‫ن‬ِ‫ل‬ ‫ه‬‫ر‬‫ه‬‫ك‬ْ‫ش‬َ‫ي‬ ‫ا‬َ‫م‬َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬َ‫ف‬ۖ ِ‫ه‬
َ‫غ‬ ‫ي‬ِّ‫ب‬َ‫ر‬ َّ‫ن‬ِ‫إ‬َ‫ف‬ َ‫ر‬َ‫ف‬َ‫ك‬ ‫ن‬َ‫م‬ َ‫لو‬‫يم‬ ِ‫ر‬َ‫ك‬ ٌّ‫ي‬ِ‫ن‬

“ Then when (Solomon) saw it (the throne miraculously) placed
firmly before him, he said: "This is by the grace of my Lord!
― to test me whether I am grateful, or ungrateful!
( HAA-DZA MIN – FADW-LI – ROB-BEE.
LI-YAB-LU-WA-NEE A -ASH-KURU – AM – AK-FUR ) .
And if any is grateful truly his gratitude is (a gain) for his
own soul; but if any is ungrateful, truly my Lord is Free of All
Needs, Supreme in Honour!"
(Qur’an: Naml: 27: 40)

“Verily, Allah does not change men’s condition unless they
change their inner selves;”
(Qur’an: Ra’ad : 13:11)

“This, because Allah would never change the blessings with
which He has graced a people unless they change their inner
selves: and [know] that Allah is all-Hearing, all-Seeing.”

“For, He (Allah) it is who has made you inherit the earth, and
has raised some of you by degrees above others, so that He

indeed much-forgiving, a dispenser of grace.”

test? Yea, indeed, we did test those who lived before
them; and so too, [shall be tested those Muslims who is
now living and] most certainly will He mark out those
who prove themselves true, and most certainly will He
mark out those who are lying.”
(Qur’an: al- Ankabut: 29: 2-3)

WHY THE TEST FOR MANKIND?

• Man can either choose to believe or to reject; to submit or
to rebel; to be grateful or be ungrateful. Such is the nature
of test or trial.

grateful or (KAFUR) ungrateful (rests on his will).”

"If ye are grateful, I will add more (favours) unto you; but if
ye show ingratitude, truly My punishment is terrible indeed."
(Qur’an: Ibrahim:14: 7)

HOW TO BE GRATEFUL?

succeed in this test as well
as to deserve achieving
further increase of
bestowals from Allah.
• Yet how does one become
grateful? What are the
important criteria?
1. Speech – Acknowledge and extol
praises of the true giver, Allah
Who alone is God, the Bestower
of all favours.
2. Heart/mind – Learn the value of
what is given, do not take any of
these favours for granted.
3. Actions – Utilize what is given in
accordance to what may please
the Giver (i.e. do not abuse the
gift), so as not to cause His wrath
to befall us.

“If Allah does touch you with infliction, there is none can
remove it but He: if He does design some benefit for you,
there is none can keep back His favour: He causes it to reach
whomsoever of His servants He pleases. And He is the Oft-
Forgiving, Most Merciful.”
(Qur’an: Yunus: 10: 107)

“And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a
loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
Who, when disaster strikes them, say, "Indeed we belong to Allah, and
indeed to Him we will return.”
Those are the ones upon whom are blessings from their Lord and mercy.
And it is those who are the [rightly] guided.”

“ And there is not a thing but with Us are the stores
thereof. And we send it not down save in appointed
measure (BI-QADARIN - MA’-LUM).”

REFUTATION TO THE
MISCONCEPTION
REGARDING
QODHA’ AND QADR

• We cannot claim to know the knowledge that is with Allah
unless He reveals it to us.
Qodha’ and Qadr –
Not a Fatalistic concept

• We cannot claim to know the knowledge that is with Allah
unless He reveals it to us.
• Thus for us in life, with time, things will gradually occur.
• This is what we may understand “Qadha’” to mean : the
fulfilment/ unveiling/ revealing of Allah’s fore-knowledge
(decree) of a matter

• Only when it has occurred can we then say “this is in
accordance with the Eternal pre-existing knowledge and
decree of Allah (Qadr)”.

• Only when it has occurred can we then say “this is in
accordance with the Eternal pre-existing knowledge and
decree of Allah (Qadr)”.
• Before it has happened we cannot say something is
already predestined - to do so would still be only mere
speculation.

• And Allah’s knowledge includes the cause and effect of
how things occur. And in this ‘cause and effect’ lies our
responsibility, because the free-will is given to us to
exercise responsibility therein.

• And Allah’s knowledge includes the cause and effect of

• Allah will not hold us responsible for causes which are
beyond our control. Yet, these other causes (beyond our
control) may affect our life and destiny in this world too.

• Thus, even if we have done our best exercising “ikhtiyar ”,
yet what is destined to occur in this life, may not always be
pleasant and good.

• Therefore, it is foolish to say: “Well if things is going to
happen according to what Allah has fixed, so ‘que sera sera!’
what will be will be” and you chose to do nothing.
(JABARIYAH)

• Therefore, it is foolish to say: “Well if things is going to
happen according to what Allah has fixed, so ‘que sera sera!’

• Also, it is foolish to expect that after you have put in every
effort, that things will occur exactly as you hope, as though
other factors beyond your control cannot affect your life in
this temporary world!
(QODARIYAH)

• Therefore, it is foolish to say: “Well if things is going
to happen according to what Allah has fixed, so ‘que
sera sera!’ what will be will be” and you chose to do
nothing. (Jabariyah)
• Also, it is foolish to expect that after you have put in
every effort, things will occur exactly as you hope, as
though other factors beyond your control cannot
affect your life! (Qodariyah)
SUMMARY
BELIEVE IN QADHA’ AND QADR REQUIRES
US TO ACCEPT THAT MANKIND IS :
[1] NEITHER FULLY COMPELLED
[2] NOR DOES HE HAS THE ABSOLUTE
FREEDOM.
ITS REALITY IS TO BE FOUND BETWEEN
THESE TWO EXTREMES.

• “Swobr” – ‘patience perseverance’; if instilled in us then
whatever the outcome in life’s trial & tribulation would
not deter nor cause us to lose hope. There would always
be optimism, ever determined, knowing that Allah knows

• Thus the actual future outcome rests only with Allah,
although we may speculate with our knowledge of cause
and effect. Yet, our knowledge is limited – whereas Allah’s

“Be mindful of Allah and Allah will protect you. Be mindful of Allah
and you will find Him in front of you. If you ask, then ask Allah
[alone]; and if you seek help, then seek help from Allah [alone]. And
know that if the nation were to gather together to benefit you with
anything, they would not benefit you except with what Allah had
already prescribed for you. And if they were to gather together to
harm you with anything, they would not harm you except with what
Allah had already prescribed against you. The pens have been lifted
and the pages have dried.”

• Believe in Qadha’ & Qadr requires a Muslim to place trust
completely in Allah (after exhausting all resolve and ikhtiyar).
Trust in Allah make us deserving of his Love:

“ And whosoever who is conscious of Allah (TAQWA),
He (Allah) will appoint a way out for him (from
every unhappiness), and will provide for him in a
manner beyond all expectations. And whosoever
puts his trust in Allah (TAWAKKAL), He (alone) will
suffice him. Verily! Allah brings His command to
pass. Allah hath set appointed (term and) measure
(QADRA) for all things.”
(Qur’an: Talaq: 65: 2-3)

(GOOD OPINION OF ALLAH)
Having only good opinion of Allah marks a true Believer.
Thus the ‘good and the bad’ are seen only as a temporary
gifts or affliction – decided by One Who is Compassionate,
Merciful and Wise.

(GOOD OPINION TOWARDS ALLAH)
Those who hold to “good opinion of Allah and His
Decree”, develop their Nafs (Soul) to become Tranquil
( ). Thus Allah says :

“And make us hateful of KUFR (every forms of disbelief and
ungratefulness), FU-SUUQ (every wickedness) and ISw-YAAN
(rebelliousness against truth & goodness)”
WA – KAR-RAH - ILAI-NAL – KUF-RA WAL
FU- SOO-QA - WAL- ISW- YAAN

‫َا‬‫ن‬َ‫ل‬َ‫ع‬ْ‫أج‬ َ‫و‬َ‫ن‬‫م‬‫ا‬َّ‫الر‬َ‫ْن‬‫ي‬‫د‬‫ش‬
“And make us to amongst those who are
RAA-SHI-DUUN (the Rightly Guided)”

ً‫َل‬ْ‫ض‬َ‫ف‬َ‫ك‬ْ‫ن‬ِ‫م‬ُ َّ‫َّللا‬ َ‫و‬ ً‫ة‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ع‬‫ن‬ َ‫و‬ٌ‫م‬‫ي‬‫ي‬َ‫ح‬ ٌ‫م‬‫ي‬‫ل‬َ‫ع‬
“As a bounty from You and a favour;
And Allah is the All-Knowing, the Wise.”

"Our Lord! Bestow on us Mercy from Thyself, and dispose of our affair
for us in the right way! “

"Our Lord! let not our hearts deviate now after Thou hast guided us,
but grant us mercy from Thee: for Thou art the Grantor of bounties
without measure.”

“Our Lord! pour out on us patience and constancy,
and Take our souls unto You
as Muslims (who bow to Your will)"!

“Our Lord! Give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter
and save us from the torment of the fire!"

“(May) Allah grant His Reward upon Muhammad, salutations of Allah
and Peace be upon him and his family, in accordance with what he
deserves (in Allah’s knowledge & estimation).”

And salutations of Allah and Peace be upon our Leader
Muhammad, and upon His household and Companions .

‫ه‬‫د‬ ۡ‫م‬َ‫ح‬ۡ‫ٱل‬ َ‫لو‬ِ َّ ِ‫ّلل‬ِّ‫ب‬َ‫ر‬ٰ‫ـ‬َ‫ع‬ۡ‫ٱل‬َ‫ين‬ِ‫م‬َ‫ل‬
”Glory to thy Lord the Lord, of Honour and Power! (He is free) from
what they ascribe (to Him)! And Peace on the Messengers! And praise
to Allah, the Lord and Cherisher of the Worlds.”
