“Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”
“Muhammad” ‫ﷺ‬ : Arabic name meaning “the
Praised One”; he is the Chosen, Unlettered
Prophet, the servant and Messenger of Allah,
the Awaited Seal of Prophethood after whom
there will be no more prophet sent.

• “Tell me about Islam” Islam is built upon five
things:
• Bear witness that
there is none deserving
of worship except
Allah, and that
Muhammad is His
servant and
Messenger.

things:
• And to establish
Swolah (the obligatory
five daily worship or
specific devotion).

things:
• And to pay the Zakah
(obligatory tax upon
the wealth).

things:
• And to make
pilgrimage (Hajj) to the
House (Ka’ba in
Makkah) if you are
able.

things:
• And to observe fasting
daily in the month of
Ramadhan.

Iman (belief) is that

(ATTESTATION TO THE ABSOLUTE ONENESS OF GOD)
• Faith without obedience is meaningless; and obedience without
Faith is mere rituals and may even lead to hypocrisy
• Together, Faith and Obedience must lead to Righteousness with
IHSAN which essentially focus in our intention to sincerely serve
Allah s.w.t .
• Thus, in these three aspects can one be said to be true in his
submission to the Will of Allah (as Muslim).
ALL THREE ASPECTS ARE TO BE DEVELOPED IN TANDEM ACCORDINGLY
WITHOUT FOCUSING AT SPECIALIZATION UNTIL AT LATER STAGE
WHEN ESSENTIAL BASIC KNOWLEDGE IS WELL-ESTABLISHED

Elucidation of the
word IIMAAN
Belief / Faith

What is ‫ان‬َ‫م‬ْ‫ي‬ِ‫إ‬ IIMAAN?
• IIMAAN is belief in or faith of something beyond sense
perception, termed as “‫ب‬ْ‫ي‬
َ
‫غ‬
ْ
‫ال‬” (al-ghaib), meaning “the
unseen”.
• It is derived from the root word “‫امن‬” which also means
“safety, peace, security, protection”
• It denote: certainty of the ultimate truth, adherence to it
instils sense of security in him from doubts, uncertainty,
restlessness etc.

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan ”cannot be by mere blind
acceptance devoid of proof or substantiation i.e. Believe or
faith must be with knowledge (`ilm).

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan ”cannot be by mere blind
"And do not follow (pursue) anything of which you
have no knowledge: verily (your) hearing and sight
and heart - all of them - will be called to account
for it (on Judgement Day).“
(Q: Bani Israil : 17 :36)

• Yet from Islamic perspective “iimaan” cannot be by mere blind
• Three sources for knowledge:
[1] Five sensory perceptions – ‫الحواس‬‫الخمسة‬ ;
[2] Reasoning – ‫ل‬ْ‫ق‬‫ع‬;
[3] True report – ‫ر‬َ‫ب‬‫ا‬َ‫خ‬‫ق‬ِ‫د‬‫ا‬َ‫ص‬

What is “IIMAAN (al-Mufassal)”?
(The Detailed Belief) “Al-iimaan is that you:
● Solemnly believe in Allah;
● His angels;
● His Books,
● His Messengers;
● In the Afterlife;
● In the Decree, the good & bad, all

Why prophets are sent

And [mention] when your Lord took from the children of
Adam - from their loins - their descendants and made them
testify of themselves, [saying to them], "Am I not your
Lord?" They said, "Yes, we have testified." [This] - lest you
should say on the day of Resurrection, "Indeed, we were of
this unaware.“
(Quran Al-A’raf 7: 172)

GUIDANCE FROM THE QUR’AN
“And verily We have raised in every nation a messenger,
(proclaiming): ‘Serve Allah and shun false gods.’ Then some
of them (there were) whom Allah guided, and some of them
(there were) upon whom error had just hold.
Do but travel in the land and see the nature of the
consequence for the deniers!”
(Qur’an: An-Nahl: 16:36)

MAN NEEDS TO BE GUIDED
• Everyone of us has certain basic questions within
ourselves:
“Why have we been created?”
“What is the purpose of my being here in this world?”
“Why do people die?”
“Does it end here?”
“ Where will we go to after death?” ... etc.

• Some may ignore these questions, yet they are still in
us and we will have to seek the Truth regarding this
matter – sooner or later.
• Man’s limited knowledge of Reality, would not be
able to fathom this mystery.

• Only Allah s.w.t. the Creator of every creation knows
the truth and Reality of our existence, the reason for
our being created and our destiny.
• Ever since Adam a.s., mankind has been promised by
Allah, guidance from Him. This is through His sending
of the Prophets and Messengers from Him.

• We do acknowledge a category of people who
discover “Laws” in nature and regard them as reliable
and their findings learnt, applied and continue to be
taught.
• These are the people gifted with insights and inspired
with knowledge of the physical world. We call them
“Scientists”.

• Yet there is another category of people, who came in
different place and time, yet all claimed to have
received Divine communication, asserted similar
universal message of God, of man’s moral obligation,
of the life in Hereafter etc.
• They delivered a message which transcend knowledge
of this physical world, inviting mankind towards Faith
in the One God. These are the “Prophets.”

DISTINCTION BETWEEN
‘NABIY’ AND ‘RASUL’
• The word “Nabi” means
“prophet” refers to a male
person who receives divine
inspiration, to assist them
in guiding the people
based upon code of life
which had already been
conveyed by earlier
Messengers (Rasul).
• Word “Rasul” means a
“Messenger”, it refers to
a “Nabi” who were
tasked to convey a new
message, code of life to
the people,
complementing and
superseding what had
came before.

DISTINCTION BETWEEN
‘NABIY’ AND ‘RASUL’
• So not every “Nabi” is a
“Rasul”; whereas all
“Rasul” must also be a
“Nabi”.
• According to a tradition,
Allah has sent 124,000
Prophets (Anbiya’).

• MA’SUM – INFALLIBLE
Meaning “preserved, protected from sinning against
Allah”, although they all have human frailties and
weaknesses.
We reject all falsehood and slander made or even
insinuated against every prophets of Allah, upholding
their honour and dignity. Especially those found in the
Bible.

This because Allah s.w.t. said:

“And We made them (Prophets as) leaders, guiding (men)
by Our Command, and We sent them inspiration to do good
deeds, to establish regular prayers, and to practise regular
charity; and they constantly served Us (and Us only).”
(Qur’an: Anbiya’: 21: 73)

“No prophet could (ever) be false to his trust.”
(Qur’an: Aali’Imran: 3: 161)

“Now await in patience the command of thy Lord: for verily thou
art in our eyes (constantly watched and preserved): and celebrate
the praises of thy Lord the while thou standest forth.”
(Qur’an: Tur: 52: 48)

َّ‫د‬َ‫ع‬َ‫أ‬ َ‫لو‬َ‫ين‬ ِ‫ر‬ِ‫ف‬ٰ‫ـ‬َ‫ك‬‫ل‬ِ‫ل‬‫ا‬‫ب‬‫ا‬َ‫ذ‬َ‫ع‬‫ا‬‫ا‬‫ا‬‫م‬‫ي‬ِ‫ل‬َ‫أ‬

“And remember We took from the Prophets their
Covenant: and from thee: from Noah, Abraham, Moses,
and Jesus, the son of Mary: We took from them a solemn
Covenant: That (Allah) may question the (Custodians) of
Truth concerning the Truth they (were charged with): and
He has prepared for the Unbelievers a grievous Penalty.”
(Qur’an: Ahzab: 33: 7-8)

َ‫ان‬َ‫ك‬ٰٓ‫ا‬َ‫ن‬َ‫ل‬‫ن‬َ‫أ‬‫م‬ُ‫ك‬َ‫ي‬‫ت‬ۡ‫أ‬َّ‫ن‬ُ‫س‬‫ب‬‫ن‬‫ـ‬َ‫ط‬ۡ‫ل‬َّ‫َل‬‫إ‬‫ن‬ۡ‫ذ‬‫إ‬‫ب‬َّ‫ٱّلل‬ۚ
Their messengers said to them: "True, we are human like yourselves,
but Allah doth grant His grace to such of His servants as He pleases.
It is not for us to bring you an authority except as Allah permits.
(Qur’an: Ibrahim: 14: 11)

• MIRACLES
The term used for this in Islam is “khawariq al-aa-dah” –
meaning “breaking from the normal order.” So, the term
“miracle” is general; to include many kinds which can be
demonstrated by all kinds of people. Islam even warn
Muslims not to generalize as though all types of

“O Allah! I seek refuge in You from entrapment (MAKAR)
and subtle deception (ISTIDRAJ) from wherever I am unaware of.
Verily You (O Allah who) is Most Generous, the Most Noble.”

• MU’JIZAT
From the word “i’-jaz” meaning to “bring low” – refers to
extra-ordinary capability given to prophets by Allah, as
Signs or proof of their Prophet hood.
Usually, it would approximate and challenge what people
of the time had already regarded to be the most fantastic.

“Not a messenger did We send before thee without
this inspiration sent by Us to him: ‘that there is no god
but I; therefore worship and serve Me.’ ”
(Qur’an: Anbiya’: 21: 25)

“For We have never sent any Messenger except that
he should be heeded (obeyed) by Allah’s leave”.

For We assuredly sent amongst every People a
messenger, (with the Command) "Serve Allah, and
eschew Evil": of the people were some whom Allah
guided, and some on whom Error became inevitably
(established).
So travel through the earth, and see what was the end
of those who denied (the Truth).”
(Qur’an: An-Nahlu: 16: 36)

“Likewise did We make for every Messenger an enemy,― evil ones
men and Jinns, inspiring each other with flowery discourses by
way of deception. If thy Lord had so willed, they would not have
done it: so leave them and their inventions alone.”

And remember Jesus, the son of Mary, said: "O Children of
Israel! I am the Messenger of Allah (sent) to you
confirming the Law (which came) before me, and giving
glad Tidings of an Messenger to come after me, whose
name shall be Ahmad (Praised one)."
But when he came to them with Clear Signs they said
"This is evident sorcery!"
(Qur’an: Saff: 61: 6)

(Jesus is recorded to have said)
“ Think not that I have come to abolish the Law and the Prophets; I
have come not to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I say to
you, till heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass
away from the Law until all is accomplished.”
(Matthews: 5: 17-20)

PROPHET MUHAMMAD
(Jesus is also recorded to have said)
“ I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear.
But when he, the Spirit of Truth, comes, he will guide you into all
truth. He will not speak on his own; he will only speak what he
hears, and he will tell you of what is yet to come. He will bring
glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to
you….”
(John: 16: 7-14)

PROPHET MUHAMMAD
“Jesus said to them :
‘Have you never read in the scriptures:
“The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone”;
The Lord has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes.
Therefore I tell you that the kingdom of God will be taken away from
you and given to a people who will produce its fruit. He who falls on
this stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be
crushed.”
(Matthews: 21: 42-44)

THE PROPHET ‫.ﷺ‬ SAID:

PROPHET MUHAMMAD
“The likeness of me and the other Prophets is similar to that
of a man who built a house and perfectly decorated it except
for a space of one brick. The people used to go round this
house, wonder and say, ‘If only this missing brick were put
in!’
Thus, I am that brick and I am the Last of the Prophets.”
(Hadith by Bukhary and Muslim)

PROPHET MUHAMMAD
“O People of the Scripture, there has come to you Our
Messenger making clear to you much of what you used
to conceal of the Scripture and overlooking much. There
has come to you from Allah a light and a clear Book.”
(Qur’an: Maa-idah: 5: 15)

“ Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but
(he is) the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal of the
Prophets: and Allah has full knowledge of all things.”
(Qur’an: Ahzab: 33: 40)

“And I leave behind me for you all, for clarifying in your
affairs (of this religion), whosoever holdfast to them shall
never be led astray – (these are) the Book of Allah and
the Sunnah (Way or tradition) of His Messenger.”

“(Honour) My successors, may Allah s.w.t. be Merciful towards
them!.” He was asked: “Who are your successors O Messenger
of Allah?” And he said: “They are those who revive my Sunnah
and teaches them to the servants of Allah.”

PROPHET MUHAMMAD
“Now whenever Allah and His Messenger have decided
a matter, it is not for a believing man or a believing
woman to claim freedom of choice insofar as they
themselves are concerned; for he who (thus) rebels
against Allah and His Messenger has already, most
obviously, gone astray.”
(Qur’an: Ahzab: 33: 36)

“By Allah! (I swear) Even if Musa is alive and present in
your midst, he can have no option except that he must
follow me (my teachings).”

PROPHET MUHAMMAD
“He it is who has sent unto the unlettered people a
messenger from among themselves, to convey unto them His
messages, and to cause them to grow in purity, and to impart
unto them the divine writ as well as wisdom - whereas before
that they were indeed, most obviously, lost in error -
As well as (to confer all these benefits upon) others of them,
who have not already joined them: and He is Exalted in
Might, Wise.”
(Qur’an: Jumu’ah: 62:2- 3)

PROPHET MUHAMMAD
“And thus have We willed you to be a community of the
middle way (ummatan wasato) [i.e. justly balanced], so that
[with your lives] you might bear witness to the truth before
all mankind (shuhadaa-a ‘alan-naas) , and the Messenger as
a witness over you.“

THE BEAUTIFUL FELLOWSHIP
“All who obey Allah and the Messenger are in the company of
those on whom is the Grace of Allah― of the Prophets (who
teach) the sincere (lovers of Truth), the witnesses (who testify),
and the Righteous (who do good): ah! How a beautiful
fellowship!
Such is the Bounty from Allah: and sufficient is it that Allah
knows all.”
(Qur’an: an-Nisa: 4: 69-70)

“And I leave behind me for you all, for clarifying in your

❑ We must be very careful not to fabricate any lies, attributing or
repeating unverified reports containing lies of what seemed to
be Ahadith (perhaps in our ignorance), to our Prophet s.a.w. In
one “mutawatir ” Hadith he warns:

“Whosoever (intentionally) fabricates a lie (in my name)
against me, let him seek his place (of abode)
in the Fire (of Hell).”

“ .....and be constant in ‘as-Swolah’
(that is the fixed obligatory daily prayer)…”
(Qur’an : al-Baqarah : 2 : 43)

“Establish ‘as-Swolah’ as you see me do”
