Bauer Media Group
• Bauer Media is Europe’s largest privately owned publishing group.
This group is worldwide institution offering over 300 different
magazines in 15 different countries as well as on other media’s
such as TV, on websites and radio.
• The two main divisions of Bauer Media are of Magazines and
Radio. The strategy of Bauer is to connect audiences with
great content through these platforms.
• Bauer make their money from companies paying to advertise in their
magazines. They need to have adverts in magazines as magazines cost more to
produce and make than the price of buying the magazine – the price of the
magazine alone does not cover all of it’s production costs, this is why they have
adverts in them.
• Bauer have some big companies and brands advertise in them. They gain
payments from these big companies to have their adverts in a specific magazine
they own by producing figures on the amount of sales they have and many
more positive attributions about the certain magazine.
Some brands that advertise in
magazines
Q’s adverts(bauer owned mag) NME’s adverts(IPC owned mag)
Jack Daniels –
expensive whisky
Popular movies
Expensive
watches
Advertising
broadband – major
broadband
company
hmv store – sells albums
ect
O2 mobile network
company – advertising
tickets to see musicians
To the right is the
information Bauer has put
on it’s website to show
companies looking to
advertise themselves, why
they should advertise in Q
magazine. This is in effect –
an advert to advertising
companies. It gives
information about the kind
of artists is includes in it
also the genre of magazine
that it is. This is important
for companies looking to
advertise as they will want
to know, if the target
audience of this particular
magazine, will be the type
of people who would buy
there product. For example
in a rock magazine like
NME you may not find
adverts for children's toys –
as the audience will not be
in that age range therefore
the advert will not gain
them sales of their product
This bullet point here would attract companies that
may have more expensive products as they know
they people reading the magazine that they are
advertised in – will be 72/100 be of the ABC1
category – therefore will have a quite a lot of money
to spare to buy advertised products.
If I were commissioned to make my
magazine
How is it similar/different to other texts they make
My magazine is similar to other types of media that Bauer has already
commissioned such as Planet rock radio and Absolute radio 90’s.
This is because my magazine will be of a rock genre/sub genre and
also will include information and articles on rock legends – many of those being
from the 90’s such as Nirvana.
My magazine is also similar to many other of the popular magazines that Bauer
commissions such as Q magazine and Kerrang magazine. This is because I am
targeting my magazine to the age range for my magazine from 15-24 and this fits
exactly to what Q’s most popular readers age is and also is in the range of Kerrangs
target age range. It is also because the content in my magazine will be broadly
similar to both magazines as they will have similar features such as articles on gigs.
However my magazine may be slightly different to Kerrang as it may have a more
mature look to it and not have such a busy, crowded front page as it has.
My product
I believe my magazine looks like a real product as I
will be incorporating all the general rules for a magazine.
I will be using
a masthead for the name of my magazine in the top
left hand corner – as I know magazines usually have
them in this area so they are easily seen.
I have also read and looked at a lot of different magazines of my genre,
therefore I have a good idea of what a rock magazine looks like. I will
include original images and do a similar thing to what most magazines do –
have a main image of one band, and then do a double page spread
focussing mostly on that band as it must be a large focus of the issue as it if
the main image on the front. I will also be including other stereotypical
magazine features such as: barcodes, sub-headings on the front, smaller
sub-images on the front and perhaps a ‘subscribe’ box on my contents
page as man y magazines that I have looked at have this – also being a way
to dedicate readers to the magazine which is good.
Why my magazine is appropriate for
Bauer
I believe my magazine is appropriate for Bauer as it fits in with it’s
most leading magazines that is owns such as Q and Kerrang. My
magazine will have articles from the old and the new up and coming
bands therefore fits with the agenda of the likes of MOJO magazine
too in which writes about many classic rock bands from the past. It
also fits in with a lot of other things Bauer owns such as Absolute
radio 90’s therefore it would be a good investment for Bauer to
continue broadening it’s line of rock related product as they are very
popular. I would like my magazine to have a quality look to it and I
think the Bauer is able to provide this as it is one of the biggest
leading institutions for magazines owning some on the most bought
magazines such as MOJO the worlds most largest magazine.
Where my magazine would
be found
WH smiths, Supermarkets, HMV,
convenience stores, service stations.
YouTube is a good way of advertising things on the net as
it now has short advertisements before video’s that
people are guaranteed to see. Also things such like
making a website for my magazine as most popular
magazines have these, making an app for it so people can
get notifications from the magazine on their phones, also
things like Facebook and Twitter accounts are popular as
they updates can be a part of peoples social networking
therefore making a talking point on these social networks
– gaining publicity heavily.
