Paul Bogard s Argument For The Preservation Of Darkness
In his commentary, Paul Bogard builds an argument for the preservation of natural darkness. He
strongly believes people are overusing artificial luminescence at night, and should reduce their usage
to preserve darkness. To substantiate his opinion, Bogard utilizes factual evidence and appeal to
emotion.
Bogard employs factual evidence as a means of improving his argument. In his second paragraph,
Bogard utilizes evidence provided by the WHO in saying the night shift is a probable human
carcinogen. . . Sleep disorders have been linked to diabetes, obesity, depression. . . one main cause of
short sleep is long light . Bogard emphasizes that as the use of artificial lighting at night increases,
more and more people are falling victim to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He begins by reminiscing about his childhood spent at a lake, nostalgically speaking of the scenes he
saw in the sky. Later, he says Even the northern lake where I was lucky enough to spend my summers
as seen its darkness diminish . Bogard uses his own past as a means of accessing the reader s past,
forcing him or her to think about how much they value their childhood. By stating how even his
childhood memories are being blown away by artificial lighting, Bogard instills fear that their
memories will face the same fate in the reader. As a result of this fear, the reader is left only to agree
with Bogard. He then goes on to state night s darkness can provide solitude, quiet and stillness. . . In a
world awash with electric light . . . how would Van Gogh have given the world his Starry Night ? As
humans, peace and solitude is an inherent part of who we are; no matter how mush of a social
butterfly we are, quiet is something we all crave. Within this peacefulness, we can get away from the
bustle of life and even find inspiration in darkness much like Van Gogh did. To lose this independence
and quiet would be a shocking blow to everyone, and the reader is convinced by Bogard. Through his
or her own emotions and experiences, the reader is compelled to agree with

What Does Integrity Mean To Me
As described by Merriam Webster dictionary:
1. Integrity
a. The quality of being honest and fair
b. The state of being complete or whole
2. Professionalism
a. The skill, good judgment, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a
job well
What integrity means to me? Integrity is being honest and fair along with being complete or whole.
Throughout my career in the military as well as in my personal life, I find integrity to be an important
trait in the way I live and hold myself. As of this time and point in my life I do not believe that I have
lost any of those things. Integrity and professionalism can go hand in hand. During my time on
deployment, being the only mine man, I have found myself working 13 plus hours on many days. A
normal work day is 0600 to 1600 but we do not see too many of those. Possessing the integrity to be at
work at 0600 to muster with someone that is not here themselves. With the long schedule I do not
complain, in turn, I provide the Navy with my strength, skills and abilities to do the best that I can.
I also have the integrity to do my job with professionalism to help my fellow I.T. sailor as much as
possible. Having the integrity to stay late and work continuously so that the ... Show more content on

Integrity is being fair and not taking sides when someone asks for my opinion. Having the ability to

Integrity is after returning home from a six month deployment saying NO I won t go on leave during
the time that the command is scheduled to go to Vulcanex. The integrity to go and support my

structural functionlism theory
QUESTION
BY USING THE STRUCTURAL FUNCTIONALIST THEORY, DISCUSS PROBLEMS FACING
OPPOSITION POLITICAL PARTIES IN ZAMBIA
In any political system are structures that have different functions to ensure an effective and smooth
running of things in that particular political system. This is why this essay will discuss the problems
faced by opposition political parties in Zambia using the structural functionalist theory. First it will
explain what structural functionalism is, then it will define structures, functions, a political party and
an opposition party then before giving the conclusion it will discuss the problems faced by opposition
parties in Zambia.

The Media is also another structure involved with the dissemination of information to the society.
According to Almond and Powell (1966) a political party needs to communicate with the electorate.
Every time opposition parties receive coverage in an article, have their face on television or their voice
on radio, they assume that they increase their chances among potential voters. In Zambia however
instead of the media being one of the means of popularity exposure for opposition parties, it tends not
to give them enough time because of the media being influenced by government. Zambian Economist
(accessed on 17.12.13) states if the press was free we would for example expect high degree of
information compared to a government controlled media . Hence this becomes a problem for the
opposition.
The Judiciary has a function of enforcing the law and making sure the rule of law is observed. The
Zambia Reports (accessed on 9.12.13) states UPND chairperson for Tourism and Culture Ephraim
Belemus said Acting Chief Justice Chibesakunda was compromised and her continued stay at the helm
of the Judiciary had proved costly to the justice system of the country . From this quotation we can tell
that in Zambia the opposition political parties have been shut from making meaningful contribution to
the nation. This absence of effective participation in the political process is a very serious limitation
that Zambian opposition parties face.

Social Constructs And Its Effect On Society
From the beginning of recorded history, especially in nature, some form of racism and sexism have
existed. They may have no be referred by these terms but evidence exists in many forms. Birth
determinants like the sex (male/female) and gender (masculine/feminine) of a person are used to
determine the individual s appearance and behavior in a specific time and place. These social
constructs are ideologies that hold meaning to a concrete society because the society itself renders
them meaningful; they do not necessarily exist but are enforced upon the masses disguised as a
necessary norm. It serves a purpose; to solidify an idea that serves as a norm. Whoever doesn t
conform to it is considered deviant. It is definitely not beneficial to all ... Show more content on

Unfair treatment of human beings is a crime against humanity because every person should have the
right to dress, talk, live, peruse what feels right for them and not being limited to what the society
propels as being the right thing to do. People fail to realize that there are being violated, and
unconsciously accept the violation as a norm. Two of the most notorious social constructs are racial
and sexual classification of human beings. People are treated with the utmost disrespect, are ostracized
and denied basic human rights/life chances such as education, housing, health care based on their race,
gender and sexual orientation. Karl Marx, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Michel Foucault, Erving
Goffman conjure up theories that sheds light on the fact that racial and sexual classifications are social
constructs set in place to ensure that the elite gets the power they desire. The elite, a select group that
holds superiority over others use social constructs as way to control the masses and gain more power.
They do so by relying on people s sense of knowledge and truth. According to Foucault, a French
philosopher and a social theorist, knowledge is power Foucault uses the term power/knowledge to
demonstrate the fact that power is built through acceptance of some sort of knowledge, scientific
understanding and truth (Foucault 1998). Eeach society has their own sets of truths which they abide
by; acceptance of that truth makes it powerful. The one who has the

What Are Your Recommendations For Using Fossil Fuels And...
1. What are your recommendations for using fossil fuels and renewable energy sources?
The United States currently uses approximately one quarter of the world s total energy consumption
(Toossi). With around 322 million people inhabiting the United States, our population accounts for
just fewer than 5% of the total world population. That means that our 5% of the world s population is
using 25% of the world s energy! Something has to be done. To begin to understand why, we need to
break down our energy demands: 37% petroleum (used mostly for transportation), 25% natural gas
(spread out evenly between industrial, residential, commercial, and electricity generation), 21% coal
(mostly going towards electricity generation), 8% renewable energies (the majority of which is used
for electricity generation) and 9% nuclear electric power (100% of which is used to produce
electricity) (Toossi). Our main problem is our incredible need for fast cars and big trucks. If we as a
nation could come together to incentivize the use of public transportation over personal transportation
our petroleum use would decrease greatly. The burning of coal is also a huge problem in the United
States. It is a fossil fuel which is incredibly unclean and is a big culprit in the global warming issue we
see today. My energy policy would incentivize the use of nuclear energy which is a much cleaner
technology and has become increasingly safe in recent years. Only 9% of our energy is generated from

Has The Airplane Revolutionized Our Society
Our society has been revolutionized greatly over the past century; not the least of which concerns the
advent of both the automobile and the plane. These two mediums of transportation have profoundly
altered our daily lives, pervading every element of our culture. The majority of people assert that
airplanes have served as the catalyst for globalization, allowing great distances to be traversed with
the utmost ease. Nonetheless, keeping in mind that the automobile has been the most pivotal status
symbol in developed nations, and in consideration of its cultural prevalence, one must consider the car
to possess greater societal import.
Be that as it may, the airplane has revolutionized the world as we know it, albeit to a lesser degree

A Worn Path By Eudora Welty Analysis
A Worn Path Eudora Welty
This story is about perseverance no matter how hard things may be. A worn path is a story about an
African American woman, Mrs. Jackson, who makes a hard trip into town to get medication for her
sick grandson. This story is very relatable for me personally because I have always had to dig deep
and push though tough situations to achieve my goals. Mrs. Jackson s main goal was to get medication
for her grandson to make him healthy again. This story shows that is you care about someone or
something enough then you will do anything for them. Mrs. Jackson reminds me a lot of my Nana
because she is a strong woman that would literally do anything for me. She has taught me that life is
about enjoying the little things in life, like the paper windmill. Phoenix Jackson didn t have the cream
of the crop, but she did her best to provide for her family. For most people in the world today things
are very easy, but that doesn t mean that the struggles are not real for others.

Drugs, Propylthiouracil, And Its Active Metabolite...
The thionamide drugs, propylthiouracil, carbimazole, and its active metabolite methimazole, have
been in use to treat thyrotoxicosis for more than 60 years. A meta analysis of randomised controlled
trials showed long term remission of hyperthyroid Graves disease in about 50% of those treated with
thionamide drugs for a prolonged period. Carbimazole or methimazole are preferred in most
situations, as a small risk of serious liver injury (about 1 in 10 000 adults) has recently been
highlighted during propylthiouracil use. In addition, carbimazole or methimazole can be taken once
daily rather than every eight or 12 hours as is the case for propylthiouracil, and the longer half life
leads to more rapid control. All inhibit the function of TPO, reducing oxidation and organification of
iodide. These drugs also reduce thyroid antibody levels by mechanisms that remain unclear, and they
appear to enhance rates of remission
After euthyroidism is achieved, two different regimens can be employed. In the first regimen, termed
block replace, the dose of thionamide is kept constant, thus blocking thyroid hormone production, and
levothyroxine is then added in a suitable dose to maintain euthyroidism. In the second regimen,
termed titrated, the thionamide dose is progressively lowered at regular intervals to allow endogenous
synthesis of thyroid hormone to continue in a regulated fashion
Subtotal or near total thyroidectomy is an option for patients who relapse after antithyroid drugs

Identify The Different Types Of Volcanoes
There are three types of volcanoes on earth. They are composite, cinder cone and shield volcanoes.
They are all over the world and depending on what kinds of volcanoes they are they would be in
different areas because some volcanoes have little lava and some have a lot that can be very dangerous
if they were to irrupt.
The first type of volcano is the Composite volcano. This type of volcano has cinders, lava flows and
mixed with gravel like sand. Hollywood types are easily recognized, many are located in popular
areas; Vesuvius, Krakatoa, Fujiyama, and Mount St. Helens.
The second type of volcanoes, are Cinder Cone volcano. These types of volcanoes are mostly loose,

The Trouble With Rewards Essay
The Trouble with Rewards
Organizational Development Culture
Alfie Kohn is a lecturer and author whose primary focus is behavior management in schools, in the
workplace, and in our parenting techniques. In 1993, Kohn published Punished by Rewards . In this
work, Kohn listed five main arguments against the use of performance based reward systems. The
arguments against such reward systems are:
Rewards Punish
Rewards Rupture Relationships
Rewards Ignore Reasons
Rewards Discourage Risk Taking
Rewards Undermine Intrinsic Motivation
On its face, it seems contradictory that a reward would be an unhealthy means to assist the process of

call the customer to make sure that all was well. As a result, the customer wrote a letter to the CEO

corporate service award and a monetary reward. Needless to say, I was not pleased. I had done the
work, but yet was not recognized. This made me feel that it is not necessary to put forth such effort
since it was a thankless function. I felt punished for doing a good job because it was not noted in the

Rewards Rupture Relationships
The idea of there can be only one is the bedrock of American values. There has to be an ultimate
winner and then there s everyone else. Logically following this thought process would lead us to the
understanding that rewarding the one causes a breakdown in relationships. The following are the
reasons that I would agree that rewards rupture relationships:
They emphasize the difference in power between the person handing out the reward and the person
receiving it.
Excellence depends on teamwork.
Employees will not ask for help when needed.
Problems will be concealed so that reputations remain intact.
Rewards create competitiveness among employees and this undermines collaboration and teamwork.
An example where rewards rupture relationships can be viewed by

Essay On The French And Spanish Influence On Native Americans
Wealth, power, and freedom. The many tales of American riches, liberty, and opportunity peaked the
curiosity of all kinds of people including: the French, English and Spanish. The legends of cities of
gold, the Fountain of Youth, a northwest passage to China, and opportunities for new colonization
drove the French, Spanish, and English to seek out this land and exploit her riches. Without the impact
left by civilizations like the French, Spanish, and English, America would be much different today.
But, in order to fully understand the role that the French, Spanish, and English played in shaping the
culture of the New World, each of their colonial eras and their effect on the Native Americans must be
explored.
The Spanish Colonial era was centered mostly on gold and conquest. Gold and wealth are what
initially excited Christopher Columbus and Spain to explore the west. King Ferdinand and Queen
Isabella sent many voyagers to America in search of gold such as: Christopher Columbus, Juan Ponce

As has been discussed concerning conquest, the Spanish had moved into many lands such as

Additionally, when the Spanish explored all across America, they brought with them diseases, such as
smallpox, which Native Americans weren t accustomed to. This caused an enormous amount of deaths
among the Native American population. This allowed the Spanish to continue to kill and conquer the
Native Americans in various amounts of ways for a long time. They were able to push far north and
west into America and into California. This forever changed the makeup of Native American
population size and Spanish influence in America. Spanish influence is very evident in the population

Tree Trim
Tower Hill School, a private school in Wilmington, DE, has been around for nearly a hundred years.
One of Tower Hill s many traditions is Tree Trim, which has been around for 88 years. It always
occurs the week before Winter break begins. Tree Trim, a time for family and friends of all ages to
gather together and sit around a tree while singing songs, represents more than a gathering. Alice in
Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, is a Bildungsroman, meaning it is a coming of age novel. Tree Trim
parallels Alice in Wonderland when Lewis Carroll mocks institutions, more specifically the

At the same time, he also mocks many institutions such as education and government. He creates a
caucus race in the novel where a dodo holds a race to see who can dry off the fastest. This is not only
irrelevant, but it also mocks the government by stating how unorganized and immature our judicial
system is. In the beginning of the novel, Alice seems to be immature and cannot fathom the idea of
growing up when she says, shall I never get any older than I am now? That ll Be a comfort, one way
never to be an old woman but then always to have lessons to learn! Oh, I shouldn t like that (pg 45).
Alice asks herself throughout the novel who she really represents and what portrays normalcy. Alice
does not get much help from anyone along her way, however, she is able to have a conversation with a
caterpillar who sits on a mushroom. While Alice talks to the Caterpillar she says, at least I know who I

are only around to help aid the lives of children. Even though Alice never sees why being young is
important, she learns other lessons as in when to be quiet and not to say whatever comes to mind.

immaturity, but later proves the leader wrong after she embarks on her path to

however, The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) stated that total abdominal

Vision and Mission Statements at Harley Davidson Every company or organization must develop a
mission and vision statement in order to have a good strategic management process. So the
organization or the company must define their vision and mission statement in a clear way (Aguinis,
2013). When the vision and the mission statements are clearly defined the managers can set up the
strategic goals and targets that are aligned with the company or organization goals for the long term.
The company managers can restate these goals into an operational strategy that can be enforced,

Lab Report For The Purpose Of Gram Staining
Gram Staining

Intro Microbiology
Dr. Hendrickson

Purpose
For the purpose of the gram staining experiment was to learn this specific type of staining technique,
as well as learn how distinguish the differences between Gram positive and Gram negative stains. This
technique uses crystal violet stain, Gram s Iodine, Ethyl Alcohol, and Safranin. These dyes are used in
order to distinguish between the different types of cells. For example, Gram positive staining will
result in a purple color, and Gram negative staining will result in a red or pinkish color (University of
Central Oklahoma department of biology, 2016). When a bacteria results in a purple stain it is
categorized as a gram positive stain because the alcohol that was used to decolorize the bacteria was
not successful. Its cell wall is made with a thick layer of peptidoglycan and holds the crystal violet
color (Case, Funke, Tortora). When a bacteria results in a red or pinkish color, this means that it loses
the crystal violet dye color after being decolorized and keeps the Safranin dye. It would then become
categorized as a gram negative stain (Case, Funke, Tortora). A gram negative bacteria has a cell wall
made of a thin layer of peptidoglycan and a thick layer of lipopolysaccharides thus holding onto the
red dye (Case, Funke, Tortora). Bacteria have different shapes and these shapes determine what family
they belong in. There are

The California Osteoporosis Prevention And Education Act
Every year, about one third of everyone over the age of 65 falls, and do not report it to their doctors.
Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries in older people (Falls Among Older Adults).
Falls become more common as people age because their bones become more brittle and their muscle
mass decreases. In society today, the baby boomers are aging, which means falls will continue to
increase in frequency. When a person falls, it doesn t just affect the victim; it affects everyone. In
2012, approximately $30 billion went towards medical costs that were associated with falls (Falls
Among Older Adults). To prevent more people being injured and more money being spent, there has
to be a change. In 2010, the California Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Act was established.
This acts intent is to spread public awareness of osteoporosis, how it can be prevented, and to improve
the way osteoporosis is treated. Half of all older women and 15 percent of older men will suffer a
fracture related to osteoporosis (Stone). Not only would it spread awareness of the disease with the
older generation, but also with physicians and other medical personal to educate them on how it can
be treated. Along with the California Osteoporosis Prevention and Education Act, there is Welfare and
Institutions Code Section 9450 9454. Theses sections focus on people and the idea of aging in place ,
and how adjustments to the home can make it safer for people. Section 9451 s intent is

Joseph Smith s Contributions to the Development of Mormons
Mormons were created by Joseph Smith in 1820, when Smith was 14 and lived in New York. During
that time God supposedly came to him and told him not to join any of the churches in his town.
Instead God told Smith to start a new religion that was based on One Lord, One Faith, and One
Baptism . God also said that no other churches were leading and teaching their people the right way,
by God s way. Smith believed that the figure speaking to him was God so he went out and began this
new religion he named Mormon. In 1830, Joseph Smith published The Book of Mormon . Also Smith
began the Latter Day Saints Church in 1830 in Palmyra, New York. Brigham Young was the successor
to Smith and the second President of the Latter Day Saints Church. Ezra Taft Benson was also a friend
of Smith s and a former United States Secretary of Agriculture under President Eisenhower and
thirteenth President of the Latter Day Saints Church. George Albert Smith was the 8th President of the
Mormon Church. At the moment, Thomas S. Monson is the President and he is the 16th President of
the Latter Day Saints Church of Christ. Each President has the assistance of a group of contemporary
apostles. The Church of Latter Day Saints or any other Church of Mormons estimates between eleven
million and twelve million followers. Mormon beliefs are very different from Christian beliefs,
although some are similar. Mormons believe that Jesus was born through sexual union between Mary

Analysis Of Cosi Fan Tutte
Avtaran Jain Cosi Fan Tutte Review Many have heard the saying that art does not have a language
barrier. However, there are times when the expression above fails to hold true for a performance. It in
during these times, that the unison of the audience breaks, and a dichotomy forms. My recent
experience with the play, Cosi Fan Tutte was somewhat similar to the events described above.
Although Cosi Fan Tutte attempts to establish itself in the hearts of the crowd through its talented and
experienced cast, it ultimately fails due to its tediously repetitive song structure and narrow intended
audience. The adeptness and dexterity of an individual have always been fundamental talents to look
for when viewing a performance. These individuals are the one that help the event advance to success.
When it comes to the qualities mentioned above, the cast of Cosi Fan Tutte definitely possess most.
Because Cosi Fan Tutte is a performance written by Mozart, it comes as no surprise that the level of
singing and acting required is highly demanding even for veterans in the industry. Yet, despite all these
hurdles, the cast of the performance is able to captivate and delight the audience through its
outstanding vocal finesse and entertaining characterization. Ferrando, played by Carlos Feliciano and
Guglielmo, played by Eli Glick are the stars of the show, displaying their level of musical acumen
through songs such as Una bella serenata and E voi ridete which require a vocal

Allusions In The Metamorphosis
Though many strive for a degree of stability in life, our lives are largely dependent on change. It is
necessary for both mental and physical development, and our survival as a species has relied on our
ability to react to changes in our environment. Furthermore, certain situations show that change is
actually critical in reaching stability. This is evident in Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis, as Gregor s
transformation from household breadwinner to loathsome insect to be essential in allowing his family
to become self sufficient as well as provide the opportunity for a better, more stable life. This essay
will explore how biblical symbols and allusions in the novella support the role change of Gregor
Samsa as the savior of his family. At the beginning of The Metamorphosis Gregor Samsa is introduced
as a hard working traveling salesman who works long arduous hours in order to maintain his family
and pay back his parent s debts. This debt symbolizes inherited sin, which in Christianity stems from
the first humans: Adam and Eve. This sinful nature is what Gregor aims to relinquish through his
monotone routine of work. However, despite ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
During this time Gregor is starved, forced to live under filthy conditions and is even ridiculed by the
household charwomen. As tensions in the family rise, the Samsa family openly discusses their desire
for Gregor s departure. Though Gregor is largely bothered by his treatment, his loyalty and care for his
family never waivers. Ultimately, realizing his family would be better off without him he decides to
sacrifice himself. His thoughts, full of tenderness and love, went back to his family. He was even more
firmly convinced than his sister, if possible, that he should disappear. (48) Gregor s death parallels that
of Christ, who like Gregor sacrificed himself so that others could live, forgave them for their sins and

Life Depicted In Thornton Wilder s Our Town
People live in perpetual motion their whole life. Our Town, by Thornton Wilder portrays characters
who live the same lives as their parents. They do not think of adapting their own lives to make them
happier and better suited for themselves instead of their parents. He points to characters doing the
same as others that are usually described by others as special. Their mundane lives show that Wilder
believes that lives are monotonous and that they need to be improved upon. By repeatedly showing
similarities in the characters lives, Wilder conveys the message that humans live the same lives as
each other because they are scared of change. Romantic love is the same for each person: self serving
and conceited. Emily and George have lived next to each other their entire lives and their families are

Definition Essay On Friendship
The word friendship is defined as having a relationship between you and a friend. The definition is
easier to interpret if you divide the word in half. A friend is someone you care about and someone you
trust with anything. The ship portion of the word refers specifically to the relationship you have with
someone. After reconstructing the word, you have friendship, which is mainly built from trust,
common interests and support.
Trust is the foundation of any friendship. Without trust, relationships shatter due to the uncertainty of
the other person s actions. For example, you can trust a true friend to be alone in your house and
expect him/her to resist the urge to steal valuables. On the other hand, if you leave a person you
assume you trust in your house with valuables, a less favorable outcome would occur. This is the
reason why trust is vital to every friendship.
Common interests are the cause of nearly all friendships. Whether it be that you both appreciate a
similar sports team or the same genre of movie, these are hobbies you both have in common. Without
common interests, the friendship will not be able to form correctly. Additionally, the friendship will
not last as long without similar interests. This is due to the lack ... Show more content on

person with their problem, redirect him/her to someone who can. This could be a family member or

Uner Tan Syndrome Essay
In 2005, a Turkish neuroscientist and evolutionary biologist named Dr. Uner Tan discovered a family
with a very unique condition: five of them walk on all fours with a quadrupedal gait. In addition to
quadrupedalism, affected individuals showed severe mental retardation and what he described as
primitive speech. The presence of these three characteristic symptoms became known as Uner Tan
Syndrome. The Ulas family was discovered in a small village near Iskenderun in southern Turkey. At
the time of their identification, there were 12 normal children and 7 disabled children, one of whom
died. Of the 6 remaining affected children, 5 of them displayed habitual quadrupedal walking. The
Ulas family is highly consanguineous (second ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Humans, due to a highly developed cerebellum, have an unparalleled sense of balance that is specially
adapted to bipedalism. MRI scans of all members of the Ulas family showed that the individuals with
Uner Tan Syndrome had grossly underdeveloped cerebellar vermis, which is responsible for balance
and locomotion (See figure 1).
Since the discovery of the Ulas family, three additional consanguineous families in Turkey have
shown segregation for Uner Tan Syndrome to varying degrees. All together, these families were
labeled A, B, C, and D. Families A and D had regular access to medical attention, and both sought
treatment for the quadrupedal locomotion. In fact, family A actively discouraged quadrupedal walking.
Attempts in both families were unsuccessful, which led researchers to conclude that social factors did
not contribute to this behavior (Ozcelik et al. 4234).
Although Uner Tan Syndrome is described as a collection of symptoms, the implications of the
quadrupedal locomotion has caused it to receive the greatest amount of attention since its discovery. In
2008, Turkish scientists claimed to have found one of the genes responsible, at least in part, to this
particular phenotype. Affected individuals in families A and D were homozygous for either deletions
or nonsense mutations in the VLDLR gene on chromosome 9. This gene transcribes a very low

that grit, talent, and all other psychological traits relevant to success in life are influenced by genes
and also by experience.(82) Duckworth supports her claim through the use of anecdotal stories and

of success as well. Individuals with higher polygenic scores were more likely to leave home for
professional opportunities, they had more prestigious jobs, made more money, and were better at

the relationship between genes and professional attainment, however other skills such as self control

I was walking towards the park my father always took me to do my project when I was little, Let me

I tried to see where it was coming from, as I looked across the green grass wondering if it was my

I decided to put my textbooks and the designing journal down on the bench. In the city we live in,

bedroom, then past a small living room, on the left, and the children s bedroom, on the right, ending at
the front door, which opened onto the porch. Vasquez tried to take in everything, a process that he

the damage there was also from smoke and heat, suggesting that the fire had started farther down the

hung down from the exposed ceiling. As he and Fogg removed some of the clutter, they noticed deep

Plea Bargains Essay
A plea bargain ( offer ) is an agreement in a criminal case whereby the prosecuting agency may offer
the defendant the opportunity to plead guilty, usually to a lesser charge or to the original criminal
charge with a proposal of a lighter than the maximum sentence. This opportunity allows defendants to
avoid the risk of a conviction at trial on a more serious charge. This also allows all involved parties to
keep the court s calendars light without exhausting resources of a court, potential public defenders,
and prosecutors who are all salaried for by the expense of tax payers. If every case in the criminal
justice system went to trial, the courts would be so overloaded that they would effectively be shut
down. An offer can occur at any ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Prosecutors may only recommend to the court the acceptance of a plea arrangement. The court will
usually take proofs to ensure that the above three components are satisfied and will then generally
accept the recommendation of the prosecution. The court uses the plea bargaining process as a way to
alleviate the need to schedule and hold a trial on an already congested court calendar. Judges are also
aware of jail/prison overcrowding and may be receptive to the processing out of offenders who are not
likely to do much jail time anyway. For prosecutors, a lightened caseload is equally attractive. Most
importantly, an offer assures a conviction, even if it is for a lesser charge or crime. This ensures that
the prosecuting agency keeps its statistics looking good, and keeps the confidence alive inside the
community. No matter how strong the evidence may be, no case is a predetermined conclusion.
Prosecutors are often at risk of waging a long and expensive trial with a chance of losing, similar to
that of the O.J Simpson murder trial. Prosecutors may use plea bargaining as means to advance their
case against a co defendant. They may accept a plea bargain arrangement from one defendant in return
for damaging testimony against another. This way, they are assured of at least one conviction even if it
s a lesser charge with the enhanced chances of captivating a conviction against the second defendant.

Effects Of Advertisements On Women
Advertisements are audio or visual forms of marketing communication used in various methods in the
media. An average person encounters 3,000 advertisements every day, which is a total of two years

However, advertisements have a grand impact on women. Companies use models to set trends and
false beauty standards using their latest products. Commercials decrease a woman s self image and

Newer technology helps conceal imperfections. Applications such as, Photoshop, are used by
advertisers to enhance a model s image before the picture is published. The viewer s desire to look the

above. These villages are able to trade freely and would develop businesses that provide good and
services to each other, as well as save and reinvest in their villages. If such an act occurred in which
village one was unable to produce wheat, the price of wheat would increase to support the reduction in
supply. The market would reach an equilibrium in which the demand would meet supply at a certain
price. This equilibrium will prevent a shortage of wheat on the market. Wheat will become more
valuable and the demand will go down. Depending on what kind of demand exists outside of the
wheat producing village, the village may be able to get more corn or other services in exchange for its
more valuable wheat. However, if the government of the nation above has implemented a price ceiling
policy on the price of wheat in an effort to make wheat affordable to everyone, famine could strike. In
this instance, some occurrence would prevent village

Relationships With The Mandans By Thomas Jefferson
Relationships with the Mandans
Thomas Jefferson had just expanded the United States territory immensely. This purchase was known
as the Louisiana Purchase, which is arguably the best decision in US history. All the new land resulted
in several unknown questions. Some of them were, what does this land provide, what animals are out
there, who can be found on this land? To answer some of these mysterious questions Jefferson sent
Meriwether Lewis and William Clark to explore the Louisiana Purchase. They also were sent to form
learn and form relationships with the people all ready on the land they are about to explore. One of
their stops on their journey was at what now is known as Fort Mandan, in Bismarck, North Dakota.
Here is where Lewis and Clark s relationship with the Mandan tribe was crucial because their next
steps have never been explored by whites. Only the Indians knew what the land looked like from
North Dakota to the Pacific Ocean. The Mandan tribe was able to show the explorers areas of the land
that was just bought by the United States of America. Between both the white explorers and the
Mandan tribe they both benefited from their relationships they formed over the winter months of 1804
because Lewis and Clark did not anticipate spending the winter in North Dakota.
Seasons have changed and the Missouri river was starting to freeze over; this caused Lewis and Clarks
exploration to halt for the winter. The explorers were able to find a camping site on the North

The Foils of Hamlet vs. My Life Experiences
In the play Hamlet by William Shakespeare, there are characters here that are obvious foils for
Hamlet. These foils have caused Hamlet a fortune. The young prince has to deal with the death of his
father and his mother s incestuous behavior and also his uncle s corruption. Hamlet is a man who is
driven by his deceased father, the king, to avenge his death and kill his uncle. But Hamlet seems to be
indecisive about it, probably because he does not want to kill his uncle, Claudius, or because he is
schemed against by various characters, who do not want him to succeed. These foils have caused
Hamlet a fortune. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Horatio and Hamlet have very similar characters, but there is still some contrast between them.
Horatio is a very sensible and reasonable character. When the ghost first appeared to Horatio, he
quickly runs to tell Hamlet about it, disregarding the dangers. Horatio was always there to guide
Hamlet. Horatio is a loyal, hardworking friend and is a reliable source of information. He cares so
much for Hamlet that he even wanted to drink out of the poisoned cup.
In the seventeen years of my life, none of my friends have thought of being ..... None of them have
ever gone of their way to do something nice for me or sacrifice something for

Social Stratification According to Marx and Weber
Social stratification is the hierarchical arrangement of individuals into divisions of power and wealth
within a society. Social stratification relates to the socio economic concept of class, consisting of the
upper class, middle class, and lower class. Each class may be further subdivided into smaller classes
through the main indicator is occupation. This is the most practical and most effective means of
encompassing the wide variety of economic and social elements that go to make up a person s class
through their education, status, income and power. Evidence shows that wealth is distributed
unequally and that incomes vary from small to huge. The old idea of Britain s class structure was
comprised as a triangular shape; with increasing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, this suggests that Britain s class structure is becoming fragmented.
On the other hand, Weberians suggests that the middle class is fragmented into competing status
groups for example, professionals and managers. Zweig (1961) argued that a section of the working
class has adopted the economic and cultural lifestyle of the middle class, the embourgeoisement
thesis. Since the 1960s, skilled manual workers have seen an improvement in wages and better living
standards, often exceeding those of some of the middle class. However, despite big improvements in
living standards and lifestyles, there are still differences that separate affluent manual workers from
the middle class which suggests that embourgeoisement has not occurred. For example, their high
wages were only obtained through overtime and shift working. Also, lack fringe benefits and have
limited promotion opportunities. This was shown in Goldthorpe and Lockwood s famous study of a
car factory in Luton (1969). However, they argue that there was signs of convergence between
working class and middle class lifestyles, but concluded that, rather than an increase in the middle
class, what had emerged was a new working class. Therefore, shows that the working class have
fragmented into at least two different ways, firstly the traditional working class, in decline and
typically situated in the North of England. Secondly, a new working class found in the newer

Types Of Enemy Labelling Is An Appropriate Way Of...
While Aday s analysis is well researched, it can be argued that the importance of the variable enemy
labelling has been overstated. From Tables 5 and 6, the coverage on NBC shows the enemy in Iraq to
be called insurgents whereas they are terrorists at FNC. In Afghanistan, at NBC, they are labelled
Taliban or Taliban and al Qaeda differing to FNC s use of terrorist or jihadist . While the differences in
the terms used to describe the enemy is interesting to note, this does not further the article s arguments
against the claim of over reporting negative news. The analysis of this data is noticeably shorter than
for the other variables examined in the study. There appears to be no new inferences to make from the
data in relation to the study. The article fails to theorise enemy labelling as an appropriate way of
analysing its arguments. A response to this critique may be that the variable of enemy labelling is a
direct test for framing or counterframing. It is important to see whether news coverage is complying
with the administration s frame or deviating from this. Language used in news media is important as it
affects public opinion about the war. It is a subtle element of bias from the news programme that gives
away a political stance that may have not been explicit. This is because it establishes a sense of
evaluating the situation morally. Counterframing, as Aday notes, can occur by the media rejecting
obvious administration framing devices, such as enemy

He strongly believes people are overusing artificial luminescence at night, and should reduce their usage to preserve darkness. To substantiate his opinion, Bogard utilizes factual evidence and appeal to emotion. Bogard employs factual evidence as a means of improving his argument. In his second paragraph, Bogard utilizes evidence provided by the WHO in saying the night shift is a probable human carcinogen. . . By stating how even his childhood memories are being blown away by artificial lighting, Bogard instills fear that their memories will face the same fate in the reader. As a result of this fear, the reader is left only to agree with Bogard. He then goes on to state night s darkness can provide solitude, quiet and stillness. . . The Media is also another structure involved with the dissemination of information to the society. According to Almond and Powell (1966) a political party needs to communicate with the electorate. Every time opposition parties receive coverage in an article, have their face on television or their voice on radio, they assume that they increase their chances among potential voters. In Zambia however instead of the media being one of the means of popularity exposure for opposition parties, it tends not to give them enough time because of the media being influenced by government. Zambian Economist (accessed on 17.12.13) states if the press was free we would for example expect high degree of information compared to a government controlled media . Hence this becomes a problem for the opposition. The Judiciary has a function of enforcing the law and making sure the rule of law is observed. The Zambia Reports (accessed on 9.12.13) states UPND chairperson for Tourism and Culture Ephraim Belemus said Acting Chief Justice Chibesakunda was compromised and her continued stay at the helm of the Judiciary had proved costly to the justice system of the country . Two of the most notorious social constructs are racial and sexual classification of human beings. Karl Marx, Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Michel Foucault, Erving Goffman conjure up theories that sheds light on the fact that racial and sexual classifications are social constructs set in place to ensure that the elite gets the power they desire. The United States currently uses approximately one quarter of the world s total energy consumption (Toossi). With around 322 million people inhabiting the United States, our population accounts for just fewer than 5% of the total world population. That means that our 5% of the world s population is using 25% of the world s energy! Something has to be done. To begin to understand why, we need to break down our energy demands: 37% petroleum (used mostly for transportation), 25% natural gas (spread out evenly between industrial, residential, commercial, and electricity generation), 21% coal (mostly going towards electricity generation), 8% renewable energies (the majority of which is used for electricity generation) and 9% nuclear electric power (100% of which is used to produce electricity) (Toossi). Our main problem is our incredible need for fast cars and big trucks. If we as a nation could come together to incentivize the use of public transportation over personal transportation our petroleum use would decrease greatly. The burning of coal is also a huge problem in the United States. It is a fossil fuel which is incredibly unclean and is a big culprit in the global warming issue we see today. The thionamide drugs, propylthiouracil, carbimazole, and its active metabolite methimazole, have been in use to treat thyrotoxicosis for more than 60 years. A meta analysis of randomised controlled trials showed long term remission of hyperthyroid Graves disease in about 50% of those treated with thionamide drugs for a prolonged period. Carbimazole or methimazole are preferred in most situations, as a small risk of serious liver injury (about 1 in 10 000 adults) has recently been highlighted during propylthiouracil use. In addition, carbimazole or methimazole can be taken once daily rather than every eight or 12 hours as is the case for propylthiouracil, and the longer half life leads to more rapid control. All inhibit the function of TPO, reducing oxidation and organification of iodide. These drugs also reduce thyroid antibody levels by mechanisms that remain unclear, and they appear to enhance rates of remission After euthyroidism is achieved, two different regimens can be employed. In the first regimen, termed block replace, the dose of thionamide is kept constant, thus blocking thyroid hormone production, and levothyroxine is then added in a suitable dose to maintain euthyroidism. In the second regimen, termed titrated, the thionamide dose is progressively lowered at regular intervals to allow endogenous synthesis of thyroid hormone to continue in a regulated fashion Subtotal or near total thyroidectomy is an option for patients who relapse after antithyroid drugs ... The following are the reasons that I would agree that rewards rupture relationships: They emphasize the difference in power between the person handing out the reward and the person receiving it. Excellence depends on teamwork. Employees will not ask for help when needed. Problems will be concealed so that reputations remain intact. Rewards create competitiveness among employees and this undermines collaboration and teamwork. An example where rewards rupture relationships can be viewed by

Lab Report For The Purpose Of Gram Staining Gram Staining Formal Lab Report Miranda King Intro Microbiology Dr. Hendrickson 13 September 2017 Purpose For the purpose of the gram staining experiment was to learn this specific type of staining technique, as well as learn how distinguish the differences between Gram positive and Gram negative stains. This technique uses crystal violet stain, Gram s Iodine, Ethyl Alcohol, and Safranin. These dyes are used in order to distinguish between the different types of cells. For example, Gram positive staining will result in a purple color, and Gram negative staining will result in a red or pinkish color (University of Central Oklahoma department of biology, 2016). When a bacteria results in a purple stain it is categorized as a gram positive stain because the alcohol that was used to decolorize the bacteria was not successful. Its cell wall is made with a thick layer of peptidoglycan and holds the crystal violet color (Case, Funke, Tortora). When a bacteria results in a red or pinkish color, this means that it loses the crystal violet dye color after being decolorized and keeps the Safranin dye. It would then become categorized as a gram negative stain (Case, Funke, Tortora). A gram negative bacteria has a cell wall made of a thin layer of peptidoglycan and a thick layer of lipopolysaccharides thus holding onto the red dye (Case, Funke, Tortora). Falls are the leading cause of fatal and nonfatal injuries in older people (Falls Among Older Adults). Falls become more common as people age because their bones become more brittle and their muscle mass decreases. In society today, the baby boomers are aging, which means falls will continue to increase in frequency. When a person falls, it doesn t just affect the victim; it affects everyone. In 2012, approximately $30 billion went towards medical costs that were associated with falls (Falls Among Older Adults). • 23. Joseph Smith s Contributions to the Development of Mormons Mormons were created by Joseph Smith in 1820, when Smith was 14 and lived in New York. During that time God supposedly came to him and told him not to join any of the churches in his town. Instead God told Smith to start a new religion that was based on One Lord, One Faith, and One Baptism . God also said that no other churches were leading and teaching their people the right way, by God s way. Smith believed that the figure speaking to him was God so he went out and began this new religion he named Mormon. In 1830, Joseph Smith published The Book of Mormon . Also Smith began the Latter Day Saints Church in 1830 in Palmyra, New York. Brigham Young was the successor to Smith and the second President of the Latter Day Saints Church. Ezra Taft Benson was also a friend of Smith s and a former United States Secretary of Agriculture under President Eisenhower and thirteenth President of the Latter Day Saints Church. George Albert Smith was the 8th President of the Mormon Church. At the moment, Thomas S. Monson is the President and he is the 16th President of the Latter Day Saints Church of Christ. Each President has the assistance of a group of contemporary apostles. The Church of Latter Day Saints or any other Church of Mormons estimates between eleven million and twelve million followers. • 24. Analysis Of Cosi Fan Tutte Avtaran Jain Cosi Fan Tutte Review Many have heard the saying that art does not have a language barrier. However, there are times when the expression above fails to hold true for a performance. It in during these times, that the unison of the audience breaks, and a dichotomy forms. My recent experience with the play, Cosi Fan Tutte was somewhat similar to the events described above. Although Cosi Fan Tutte attempts to establish itself in the hearts of the crowd through its talented and experienced cast, it ultimately fails due to its tediously repetitive song structure and narrow intended audience. The adeptness and dexterity of an individual have always been fundamental talents to look for when viewing a performance. These individuals are the one that help the event advance to success. When it comes to the qualities mentioned above, the cast of Cosi Fan Tutte definitely possess most. Because Cosi Fan Tutte is a performance written by Mozart, it comes as no surprise that the level of singing and acting required is highly demanding even for veterans in the industry. Yet, despite all these hurdles, the cast of the performance is able to captivate and delight the audience through its outstanding vocal finesse and entertaining characterization. Ferrando, played by Carlos Feliciano and Guglielmo, played by Eli Glick are the stars of the show, displaying their level of musical acumen through songs such as Una bella serenata and E voi ridete which require a vocal ... • 25. Allusions In The Metamorphosis Though many strive for a degree of stability in life, our lives are largely dependent on change. It is necessary for both mental and physical development, and our survival as a species has relied on our ability to react to changes in our environment. Furthermore, certain situations show that change is actually critical in reaching stability. This is evident in Franz Kafka s The Metamorphosis, as Gregor s transformation from household breadwinner to loathsome insect to be essential in allowing his family to become self sufficient as well as provide the opportunity for a better, more stable life. This essay will explore how biblical symbols and allusions in the novella support the role change of Gregor Samsa as the savior of his family. At the beginning of The Metamorphosis Gregor Samsa is introduced as a hard working traveling salesman who works long arduous hours in order to maintain his family and pay back his parent s debts. This debt symbolizes inherited sin, which in Christianity stems from the first humans: Adam and Eve. This sinful nature is what Gregor aims to relinquish through his monotone routine of work. Ultimately, realizing his family would be better off without him he decides to sacrifice himself. His thoughts, full of tenderness and love, went back to his family. • 27. Definition Essay On Friendship The word friendship is defined as having a relationship between you and a friend. The definition is easier to interpret if you divide the word in half. A friend is someone you care about and someone you trust with anything. The ship portion of the word refers specifically to the relationship you have with someone. After reconstructing the word, you have friendship, which is mainly built from trust, common interests and support. Trust is the foundation of any friendship. Without trust, relationships shatter due to the uncertainty of the other person s actions. For example, you can trust a true friend to be alone in your house and expect him/her to resist the urge to steal valuables. On the other hand, if you leave a person you assume you trust in your house with valuables, a less favorable outcome would occur. This is the reason why trust is vital to every friendship. Common interests are the cause of nearly all friendships. Whether it be that you both appreciate a similar sports team or the same genre of movie, these are hobbies you both have in common. Without common interests, the friendship will not be able to form correctly. Additionally, the friendship will not last as long without similar interests. This is due to the lack ... Uner Tan Syndrome Essay In 2005, a Turkish neuroscientist and evolutionary biologist named Dr. Uner Tan discovered a family with a very unique condition: five of them walk on all fours with a quadrupedal gait. In addition to quadrupedalism, affected individuals showed severe mental retardation and what he described as primitive speech. The presence of these three characteristic symptoms became known as Uner Tan Syndrome. The Ulas family was discovered in a small village near Iskenderun in southern Turkey. At the time of their identification, there were 12 normal children and 7 disabled children, one of whom died. Of the 6 remaining affected children, 5 of them displayed habitual quadrupedal walking. Humans, due to a highly developed cerebellum, have an unparalleled sense of balance that is specially adapted to bipedalism. MRI scans of all members of the Ulas family showed that the individuals with Uner Tan Syndrome had grossly underdeveloped cerebellar vermis, which is responsible for balance and locomotion (See figure 1). Since the discovery of the Ulas family, three additional consanguineous families in Turkey have shown segregation for Uner Tan Syndrome to varying degrees. All together, these families were labeled A, B, C, and D. Families A and D had regular access to medical attention, and both sought treatment for the quadrupedal locomotion. In fact, family A actively discouraged quadrupedal walking. Attempts in both families were unsuccessful, which led researchers to conclude that social factors did not contribute to this behavior (Ozcelik et al. 4234). Although Uner Tan Syndrome is described as a collection of symptoms, the implications of the quadrupedal locomotion has caused it to receive the greatest amount of attention since its discovery. In 2008, Turkish scientists claimed to have found one of the genes responsible, at least in part, to this particular phenotype. Affected individuals in families A and D were homozygous for either deletions or nonsense mutations in the VLDLR gene on chromosome 9. This gene transcribes a very low density ... • 43. Social Stratification According to Marx and Weber Social stratification is the hierarchical arrangement of individuals into divisions of power and wealth within a society. Social stratification relates to the socio economic concept of class, consisting of the upper class, middle class, and lower class. Each class may be further subdivided into smaller classes through the main indicator is occupation. This is the most practical and most effective means of encompassing the wide variety of economic and social elements that go to make up a person s class through their education, status, income and power. Evidence shows that wealth is distributed unequally and that incomes vary from small to huge. The old idea of Britain s class structure was comprised as a triangular shape; with increasing ... On the other hand, Weberians suggests that the middle class is fragmented into competing status groups for example, professionals and managers. Zweig (1961) argued that a section of the working class has adopted the economic and cultural lifestyle of the middle class, the embourgeoisement thesis. Since the 1960s, skilled manual workers have seen an improvement in wages and better living standards, often exceeding those of some of the middle class. However, despite big improvements in living standards and lifestyles, there are still differences that separate affluent manual workers from the middle class which suggests that embourgeoisement has not occurred. For example, their high wages were only obtained through overtime and shift working. Also, lack fringe benefits and have limited promotion opportunities. This was shown in Goldthorpe and Lockwood s famous study of a car factory in Luton (1969). However, they argue that there was signs of convergence between working class and middle class lifestyles, but concluded that, rather than an increase in the middle class, what had emerged was a new working class. Therefore, shows that the working class have fragmented into at least two different ways, firstly the traditional working class, in decline and typically situated in the North of England. Secondly, a new working class found in the newer ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 44. Types Of Enemy Labelling Is An Appropriate Way Of... While Aday s analysis is well researched, it can be argued that the importance of the variable enemy labelling has been overstated. From Tables 5 and 6, the coverage on NBC shows the enemy in Iraq to be called insurgents whereas they are terrorists at FNC. In Afghanistan, at NBC, they are labelled Taliban or Taliban and al Qaeda differing to FNC s use of terrorist or jihadist . While the differences in the terms used to describe the enemy is interesting to note, this does not further the article s arguments against the claim of over reporting negative news. The analysis of this data is noticeably shorter than for the other variables examined in the study. There appears to be no new inferences to make from the data in relation to the study. The article fails to theorise enemy labelling as an appropriate way of analysing its arguments. A response to this critique may be that the variable of enemy labelling is a direct test for framing or counterframing. It is important to see whether news coverage is complying with the administration s frame or deviating from this. Language used in news media is important as it affects public opinion about the war. It is a subtle element of bias from the news programme that gives away a political stance that may have not been explicit. This is because it establishes a sense of evaluating the situation morally. Counterframing, as Aday notes, can occur by the media rejecting obvious administration framing devices, such as enemy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
