Peruvian balsam, also known as balsam of Peru, comes from the Toluifer pereiare tree found in Central America. It is obtained through inflicting injuries to the tree's stems, then collecting the exuded resin using rags. The rags are boiled to separate the balsam, which is a dark brown, viscous liquid with a pleasant aroma and bitter taste. It contains benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, resin esters, and volatile oils. Peruvian balsam has various medical and cosmetic uses as a stimulant, expectorant, antiseptic, and fragrance ingredient.
