THE FACADE SYSTEM____Oakland University Human Health Building by SMITHgroupJJR___
The use of rain screen façade system is
a new type of cladding technology that
allows rainwater to trickle down a
building’s façade in a systematic way,
this creates a visually appeal and as well
as an ecological and sustainable perk.
Oakland University Human Health
Building has used a terracotta tile like
cladding as it is impermeable and can
withstand high temperature and
rainfall without much cracking.
Construction method - The strength of the panel is derived from an
internal l-beam support.
Reasoning – This system is appropriate for tropical climate due to the high amounts or rainfall and moderate winds, its creates a beautiful visual finish and also help to reduced sounds transmittance
with the building as well as heat gain.
Advantages –
It has a lead like indents, with different applications and use, it can be
layer out vertically or horizontally for flexibility of design. The
horizontal one above are used to also break soundwaves and redirect
them into the insulation between the opening in the panels. Another
perk to his application is that with different shades or patterns the
exterior design it limitless, also at its best when sunlight is gazes upon
to creates unique organic feel to the building.
They are also easy to install and replace if any damage is caused.
Disadvantages –
expands during large contact with sun and also is timing consuming to
install during the construction process, not entirely durable for a long
period of time, depending upon the material used. Does not provide
much environmental benefits, non recycacle.
Construction detail and process.
THE FACADE SYSTEM_______________SAADAT ABAD by Mohsen Kazemianfard_______________
The use pivoting rotational panels all
along the façade allows interaction with
façade as well as to provide complete
control over the lighting within. This
creates flexible spaces and unique
enhancement to the user. The design
approach of this project is to target an
ambiance of serenity and tranquillity
within the building.
“This project shifts from a basic
relationship between the building and
the city to an interaction between the
inside and outside in attempt to establish
a better definition of the quality of the
building and the city. Not only provides
an answer for the needs of the users, but
also this building intended to create a
connection with the exterior observers.”
Advantages -
 In this situation louvres used on the side of the building with most
sunlight, greatly reduces the penetration to the interior
 Angle on of the louvres can be altered to control lighting
 Louvres can be used to conceal unwanted forms or details of the
building
 Great aesthetic value
 Does not put much strain on the primary structure
Disadvantages -
 From the outside the building may seem concealing
 From the inside it prevents maximum view to the outside
 Hindrance of wind or entrapment could cause structural issues
 Maintenance of louvres could be time consuming if many are used
Construction Details and
drawing of components
Construction method – After the façade system has been introduced,
which is framing system, (yellow colour) then the secondary framing
system in which the louvres will sit in is produced after which fittings of
the louvres are made and then in this case they are rotational so extra
pivoting elements need to be added to the secondary or primary frame
construction.
Reasoning – The louvered system in this cases greatly improves the aesthetics of the structure, whilst also proving a sustainable solution to a problem of the sun to reduce head gain and generate
uniqueness. The raised quality of the spaces now provides a greater ambiance within and possibly creates a more inviting and calm feel. The flexibility of and adaptability of the louvres to the climate
makes it a great asset for this structure.

THE ROOF SYSTEM_______________THE HAVEN by LSI ARCHITECTS___________________
Built of pre-insulated panellised timber components, the 2-storey pavilion floats above
the landscape to address future flooding, alongside the low nautical boathouse, also
serving as the energy centre. The building is a mixture of galvanised steel and timber
framing, so advantages are increased and disadvantages are decreased.
The form of the house is based upon the concept of an elegant roof form above a
rectilinear box forming the living accommodation. The roof form travel down the rear of
the house to enclose the circulation ramp. Full height windows on the south elevation
take advantage of the river views and passive solar energy. These windows have deep
reveals which are coloured to provide subtly changing views of the house from the river.
Advantages -
 Pre-fab wood construction done off site, allows efficient and quick
assembly
 Not considered as light framed structures, but don’t allow the
resonation of sounds as compared to steel if exposed.
 Pre-insulated done before hand
 More durable to fire’s as compared to steel
 Reduces site waste as timber is a renewable resource
 Can be shaped in any form more or less
 Versatile and visually appealing
 Naturally un-corrosive
 Galvanised casing and pilling for sustainability and occasional
flooding at site
Disadvantages -
 Lower in strength as compared to steel construction, hence allows
less spacing between members.
 Timber depending on climate can shrink, swell twist, crack and
bend over time.
 Maintenance of timber construction can be higher than other
building materials
The Roof system is
constructed much like a
mono- pitched roof but
with its beams running all
the way out and curved
into the ground to create
an interesting form and
structural ingenuity.
Construction method
Roof detail – mono pitched
Reasoning – using this type of construction method for the roof
system, is efficient due to its pre fab, as well as its sustainability e.g.
wood and galvanization to prevent rusting especially in humid
tropical climates. Allowing to blend in site and having unique form
qualities.
INTRODUCTION__________________________________________________________
PROJECY TYPE: NURSERY AEP
PROJECT LOCATION: MINDEN HEIGHTS, PENANG (RESIDENTIAL AREA)
OBJECTIVE:
TO DESIGN AN AEP EDUCATIONAL BUILDING IN THE SMACK CENTER OF A RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY. THE IDEA IS TO RECONNECT THE COMMUNITY WHILST
TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT.
NOT TO CHANGE THE LANSCAPE AND TO PRESEVE THE SITE, WHILST TRYING TO BRING MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING TO CATER THE SURROUNDING TYPE OF
ARCHITECTURE AND EVENTUALLY INTRODUCE A NEW TYPE OF DESIGN THAT REPECTS THE SITE AND BRINGS THE OUTSIDE INSIDE AND VICE VERSA.
BUILDING TECH 1 OBJECTIVES
 To encourage analytical and critical study of the principles, practices and details of building technology in the student’s own design.
 To encourage students to consider the construction aspects throughout the design process.
 To adapt and implement the alternative construction systems into the students’ design.

THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM_______________WOOD FLOORING AND WALL______________
Wall systems
For this project most of the walls will be
timber cladded with galvanized steel or
reinforced concrete filling, it depends
upon the purpose of the space and the
intention as AEP schools require special
spaces hence different structural
aspects have to be considered.
Floor Systems
Same can be said for the flooring
systems as having wooden floor is
appropriate for a Nursery type
structures.
Balloon Framing and Upper Floors
The details of upper floor construction
are different in balloon framing. Each
floor’s joists are run off of the same
stud members that continue through
the height of the house. In order to
hang the joists, ribbon members are
installed to the studs. This type of
construction provides great stability.
Fire stopping is included in the stud
bays.
Components –
Construction Details and
drawing of components
Balloon Framing and Foundation
Introduced during the mid-1800s, balloon
framing is no longer a popular framing
system. Balloon framing uses the same
type of members as platform framing, but
with more substantial sized material for
studs. Studs in a balloon frame run
continuously from the sill all the way to
the rafter. The second floor joists are
supported on a ribbon instead of a joist
header. Fire stopping is added to the
spaces between the studs, which provides
a space for mechanical system installation.
The foundation for a balloon frame is
constructed the same as in the platform
framing method. There is a sill plate
attached to the foundation, and joists run
perpendicular from the sill plate. The studs
are then attached to the joists, and run
the entire height of the house. The
subflooring is installed on top of the joists. An additional benefit of certain types of engineered wood products is the ability to use smaller pieces that would
otherwise be considered waste. This can help reduce the burden on both landfills and our forests.
The combustibility of a building's framing material has little to do with fire safety. Statistics show that the risk of fire
is no greater for wood frame homes than for those built with other structural materials.
According to a study led by the CORRIM (Consortium for Research on Renewable Materials), the lifecycle of
steel and concrete results in 26% to 31% more greenhouse gas emissions than that of wood.

  • 1. THE FACADE SYSTEM____Oakland University Human Health Building by SMITHgroupJJR___ The use of rain screen façade system is a new type of cladding technology that allows rainwater to trickle down a building’s façade in a systematic way, this creates a visually appeal and as well as an ecological and sustainable perk. Oakland University Human Health Building has used a terracotta tile like cladding as it is impermeable and can withstand high temperature and rainfall without much cracking. Construction method - The strength of the panel is derived from an internal l-beam support. Reasoning – This system is appropriate for tropical climate due to the high amounts or rainfall and moderate winds, its creates a beautiful visual finish and also help to reduced sounds transmittance with the building as well as heat gain. Advantages – It has a lead like indents, with different applications and use, it can be layer out vertically or horizontally for flexibility of design. The horizontal one above are used to also break soundwaves and redirect them into the insulation between the opening in the panels. Another perk to his application is that with different shades or patterns the exterior design it limitless, also at its best when sunlight is gazes upon to creates unique organic feel to the building. They are also easy to install and replace if any damage is caused. Disadvantages – expands during large contact with sun and also is timing consuming to install during the construction process, not entirely durable for a long period of time, depending upon the material used. Does not provide much environmental benefits, non recycacle. Construction detail and process.
  • 2. THE FACADE SYSTEM_______________SAADAT ABAD by Mohsen Kazemianfard_______________ The use pivoting rotational panels all along the façade allows interaction with façade as well as to provide complete control over the lighting within. This creates flexible spaces and unique enhancement to the user. The design approach of this project is to target an ambiance of serenity and tranquillity within the building. “This project shifts from a basic relationship between the building and the city to an interaction between the inside and outside in attempt to establish a better definition of the quality of the building and the city. Not only provides an answer for the needs of the users, but also this building intended to create a connection with the exterior observers.” Advantages -  In this situation louvres used on the side of the building with most sunlight, greatly reduces the penetration to the interior  Angle on of the louvres can be altered to control lighting  Louvres can be used to conceal unwanted forms or details of the building  Great aesthetic value  Does not put much strain on the primary structure Disadvantages -  From the outside the building may seem concealing  From the inside it prevents maximum view to the outside  Hindrance of wind or entrapment could cause structural issues  Maintenance of louvres could be time consuming if many are used Construction Details and drawing of components Construction method – After the façade system has been introduced, which is framing system, (yellow colour) then the secondary framing system in which the louvres will sit in is produced after which fittings of the louvres are made and then in this case they are rotational so extra pivoting elements need to be added to the secondary or primary frame construction. Reasoning – The louvered system in this cases greatly improves the aesthetics of the structure, whilst also proving a sustainable solution to a problem of the sun to reduce head gain and generate uniqueness. The raised quality of the spaces now provides a greater ambiance within and possibly creates a more inviting and calm feel. The flexibility of and adaptability of the louvres to the climate makes it a great asset for this structure.

  • 6. THE ROOF SYSTEM_______________THE HAVEN by LSI ARCHITECTS___________________ Built of pre-insulated panellised timber components, the 2-storey pavilion floats above the landscape to address future flooding, alongside the low nautical boathouse, also serving as the energy centre. The building is a mixture of galvanised steel and timber framing, so advantages are increased and disadvantages are decreased. The form of the house is based upon the concept of an elegant roof form above a rectilinear box forming the living accommodation. The roof form travel down the rear of the house to enclose the circulation ramp. Full height windows on the south elevation take advantage of the river views and passive solar energy. These windows have deep reveals which are coloured to provide subtly changing views of the house from the river. Advantages -  Pre-fab wood construction done off site, allows efficient and quick assembly  Not considered as light framed structures, but don’t allow the resonation of sounds as compared to steel if exposed.  Pre-insulated done before hand  More durable to fire’s as compared to steel  Reduces site waste as timber is a renewable resource  Can be shaped in any form more or less  Versatile and visually appealing  Naturally un-corrosive  Galvanised casing and pilling for sustainability and occasional flooding at site Disadvantages -  Lower in strength as compared to steel construction, hence allows less spacing between members.  Timber depending on climate can shrink, swell twist, crack and bend over time.  Maintenance of timber construction can be higher than other building materials The Roof system is constructed much like a mono- pitched roof but with its beams running all the way out and curved into the ground to create an interesting form and structural ingenuity. Construction method Roof detail – mono pitched Reasoning – using this type of construction method for the roof system, is efficient due to its pre fab, as well as its sustainability e.g. wood and galvanization to prevent rusting especially in humid tropical climates. Allowing to blend in site and having unique form qualities.
  • 7. INTRODUCTION__________________________________________________________ PROJECY TYPE: NURSERY AEP PROJECT LOCATION: MINDEN HEIGHTS, PENANG (RESIDENTIAL AREA) OBJECTIVE: TO DESIGN AN AEP EDUCATIONAL BUILDING IN THE SMACK CENTER OF A RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITY. THE IDEA IS TO RECONNECT THE COMMUNITY WHILST TAKING INTO ACCOUNT THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT. NOT TO CHANGE THE LANSCAPE AND TO PRESEVE THE SITE, WHILST TRYING TO BRING MAJORITY OF THE BUILDING TO CATER THE SURROUNDING TYPE OF ARCHITECTURE AND EVENTUALLY INTRODUCE A NEW TYPE OF DESIGN THAT REPECTS THE SITE AND BRINGS THE OUTSIDE INSIDE AND VICE VERSA. BUILDING TECH 1 OBJECTIVES  To encourage analytical and critical study of the principles, practices and details of building technology in the student’s own design.  To encourage students to consider the construction aspects throughout the design process.  To adapt and implement the alternative construction systems into the students’ design.

  • 9. THE STRUCTURAL SYSTEM_______________WOOD FLOORING AND WALL______________ Wall systems For this project most of the walls will be timber cladded with galvanized steel or reinforced concrete filling, it depends upon the purpose of the space and the intention as AEP schools require special spaces hence different structural aspects have to be considered. Floor Systems Same can be said for the flooring systems as having wooden floor is appropriate for a Nursery type structures. Balloon Framing and Upper Floors The details of upper floor construction are different in balloon framing. Each floor’s joists are run off of the same stud members that continue through the height of the house. In order to hang the joists, ribbon members are installed to the studs. This type of construction provides great stability. Fire stopping is included in the stud bays. Components – Construction Details and drawing of components Balloon Framing and Foundation Introduced during the mid-1800s, balloon framing is no longer a popular framing system. Balloon framing uses the same type of members as platform framing, but with more substantial sized material for studs. Studs in a balloon frame run continuously from the sill all the way to the rafter. The second floor joists are supported on a ribbon instead of a joist header. Fire stopping is added to the spaces between the studs, which provides a space for mechanical system installation. The foundation for a balloon frame is constructed the same as in the platform framing method. There is a sill plate attached to the foundation, and joists run perpendicular from the sill plate. The studs are then attached to the joists, and run the entire height of the house. The subflooring is installed on top of the joists. An additional benefit of certain types of engineered wood products is the ability to use smaller pieces that would otherwise be considered waste. This can help reduce the burden on both landfills and our forests. The combustibility of a building's framing material has little to do with fire safety. Statistics show that the risk of fire is no greater for wood frame homes than for those built with other structural materials. According to a study led by the CORRIM (Consortium for Research on Renewable Materials), the lifecycle of steel and concrete results in 26% to 31% more greenhouse gas emissions than that of wood.
