1.0 INTRODUCTION
The building is situated in 2 shoplots along Jalan Besar, Klang. With the
front facing to the north east and rear facing to the south west, the
building sits in the middle of a rich district. We are to propose on creating a
community library within the existing urban context.
SITE OF
LIBRARY
2.1 FACADE 1 - CLAY ROOF HOUSE, PETALING JAYA, MALAYSIA
-BRISE SOLEIL FACADE DESIGN-
Existing clay roof tiles were reused as it was still in perpect condition and of good quality.
DRTAN LM Architect found a solution to vertically screen the facade from the morning and
afternoon sun as the house is faced to the west. Vertical steel rods were designed to hold the
clay tiles whilst allowing free movement to swivel and turn. This reduces the solar gain through
the house’s fenestration of windows and glass doors and lends a soft tremulous lighting effect
when viewed with internal lights switched on at night from the outside. In the sun the terracotta
glows a warm orange.
ADVANTAGES
- Long lasting & durable.
- Unique and interective design can
attract people.
- Provides shading from sun.
- Provides natural ventilation.
- Reusing materials can safe cost.
DISADVANTAGES
- Maintainence is needed.
- Not resistant to heavy rain.
- Requires certain labour and skills.

DIFFERENT POSITIONING OF ROOF TILE
FACADE
- Light into building can be adjusted.
- Suitable for our tropical climate.
- Permeable as well as provides privacy.
2.2 FACADE 2 - COMMUNITY ENTERPRICE BUILDING, SHEFFIELD, ENGLAND
-PERFORATED METAL FACADE-
The perforated metal facade of this community enterprise was constructed in Sheffield,
England, was made by Architecture 00 to eventually turn into a framework for climbing plants .
Its intention was to create a welcoming facility, so they chose a perforated aluminium cladding
that is secure but that will also remain resilient and attractive over time. Later on, the building
will become the substrate of a living green facade, designed to help the building soften into its
context whilst reflecting the changing seasons.
ADVANTAGES
- Fast production of material.
- Long life span.
- Provides some privacy without
affecting the view of the outdoors.
- Provides shading by limiting the
amount of light entering.
DISADVANTAGES
- Maintainence is needed.
- High cost of manufacturing and
installation.
- Limited sizes or designs.
REASONS OF SELECTION
CONSTRUCTION DETAIL
Perforated metal
mesh is connected
to a secondary
structure and is
joined to the main
structure of the
building.
- Provides partial views into the building.
- Provides natural ventilation.
- Acts as a sun shading device.
2.3 ROOF SYSTEM - GAP RESIDENCE, BRISBANE, AUSTRALIA
-SKILLION METAL ROOF SYSTEM-
A skillion roof is different from a standard flat roof though as it has a steeper and more
noticeable pitch. Skillion roofs are installed because they are cheap and fast to construct. This
type of roof systems don't suffer from the drainage problems encountered by less steeply
pitched roofs. Roofs with good drainage require a less tightly sealed building envelope. For this
reason, the rubber skins or roofing membranes that are necessary on flat or low pitched roofs
may be done away with.
ADVANTAGES
- Economical, fast and simple
construction.
- Lightweight property of roof allows
slender structural members.
- Strong design element.
- Allows easy water drainage.
DISADVANTAGES
- Can result in ceiling height being too
low if pitch is too steep.
- Can be quite noisy in the event of
heavy rain.
REASONS OF SELECTION
- Overhangs allow for shade from the
tropical sun to the level below.
- Practical and blends in well with the site
context.
CONSTRUCTION DETAIL
2.4 STRUCTURE - DISCOVERY CENTRE, BENGALURU, INDIA
-STEEL POST & BEAM STRUCTURAL SYSTEM- / -COMPOSITE STEEL & CONTRETE FLOOR SYSTEM-
Discovery Centre uses steel as their structure as it gives the building a lightweight feelinng whilist
providing modular manners for ease of space positioning. The structure is exposed is
dynamically as part of the building's skin which are embeded with glass panels. The steel
components mainly used are, i-shaped, h-shaped or hollow steel. Composite floor system used
in this building are raised floors which enable the floor to be removed and reused again.
ADVANTAGES
- Stronger compared to other structural
and floor systems.
- Easy construction of pre-fabricated
systems.
- Variety of finishes available.
DISADVANTAGES
- Steel requires concrete shell in order to
protect from humidity and fire.
- Strength loss in high temperature.
- Improper inspections of constructions
will cause slurry runs which will affect the
structure.
REASONS OF SELECTION
CONSTRUCTION DETAIL
Metal decking is corrugated to
increase its stiffness and spaning
capability. Floor decks serve as a
working platform during construction.
