Ken Yeang is a Malaysian architect and pioneer of green design known for his eco-friendly buildings and masterplans. Some of his notable works include the National Library of Singapore, Mesiniaga Tower in Malaysia, Ganendra Art House in Malaysia, and Solaris in Singapore. These buildings incorporate various green features such as passive solar design, natural ventilation, daylighting, landscaping, and water conservation.

1. KEN YEANG
Ken Yeang (born 1948) is a Malaysian architect,
ecologist and author known for his signature
Eco architecture and Eco masterplans. Yeang is
an early pioneer of ecology-based green design
and master planning. He was named by THE GUARDIAN
as "one of the 50 people who could save the planet”.

3. National Library of Singapore, Singapore, 2005. The
building consists of two 16-storey blocks, with three basements. The blocks are linked by sky bridges on
every floor.

4. GREEN FEATURES:
• Building is orientated away from the east-west sun, sun shading features on
the west face of the building as an additional shield against solar heat gain
and glare.
• Energy efficient features include daylight sensors which are used at the
building facades, motion sensors and energy efficient lightings.
• A open plaza area between the two blocks which allows natural ventilation
and daylighting.
• Extensive landscaping, sky terraces and roof gardens are utilized to lower
local ambient temperature.
• Use rain sensor as part of the automatic irrigation system for rooftop gardens.
Water efficient taps and cisterns are also used to conserve water.

5. Mesiniaga Toweris a futuristic building located in Subang Jaya, Malaysia. The
construction of this high-tech building began in 1990 and was completed in 1992. the
design principles was recognised with the Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1995 for
the design.

6. GREEN FEATURES:
• A circular spiraling body with landscaped sky courts that allow visual
relief for office workers as well as providing continuity of spaces
connecting the land through the building.
• Walls can provide solar and weather protection, as well as provide for
cross ventilation.
• A Sloping landscape base to connect the land with the verticality of
the building.
• A number of passive low-energy features are also incorporated, all
the window areas facing the hot sides of the building (ie. east and
west sides) have external louvres as solar-shading to reduce solar
heat gain into the internal spaces.

7. The Ganendra Art House located in Malaysia and is
a tangible symbol of the clients commitment to
innovation, sustainability and design.

8. GREEN FEATURES:
• Ganendra Art House is oriented based on the location’s solar path north
and south.
• The building envelope is the physical separator between the interior and
exterior of a building such as wall, windows, door, floors and roof. A well-
designed envelope will respond to the local climate.
• The external finish of the building is light grey cement render. This light
color further reduces heat gain by reflecting up to 50% of solar radiation,
thus providing more comfort to the users in the building.
• The sound insulation property of hollow brick is better than a normal
brick.
• Ganendra Art House is also the first building that presents the unique
green features such as wind chimney and bios wales in that region.

9. Solaris - Singapore
SOLARIS:
Solaris is located in Singapore, it is a 15 storey office building. Solaris was recognized as a
"Best Tall Building Asia & Australasia Finalist" in the 2012 CTBUH Awards Program.

10. GREEN FEATURES:
• Light shaft to enhance penetration of natural lighting to the building .
• Network of light sensors in stalled to reduce energy usage.
• Solar shaft is a diagonal cut through the office units on 15 level first towers to
natural lighting into the units.
• Sunshade louvers have been designed to reduce direct sunlight from entering
building .
• Naturally ventilated and day lit grand atrium.
• Roof gardens and corner sky terraces as a thermal buffer.
• Planter box design on landscaped spiral ramp.
• Rainwater harvesting through a network of symphonic drainage systems.
