The United Nations was not created to lead mankind to heaven, but to save humanity

The kinds of hell Dag HammarskjГ¶ld referred to are not difficult to imagine in a
world ravished by World War II and terrified by the threat of nuclear war.
HammarskjГ¶ld is known today as the second Secretary General of the United
Nations (UN) and widely regarded as a man of unimpeachable character. His career
at the UN was remarkable, in that he was completely uninterested in the
bureaucratic politics many at the United Nations engage in, choosing to lead
projects from the command tent instead of the corner office. He was the first and
only Secretary General to be chosen unanimously and is largely regarded as the
greatest leader of the United Nations in history. John F. Kennedy once said about
HammarskjГ¶ld, I realize now, in comparison to him I am a small man. He was the

All things have been created and have a beginning. The world being the largest
creation in recorded history. There are many different theories of how the world was
created, many different cultures have their own creation myth . These creation myths
all have an obvious contrast between them, as well as a large similarity that creates a

An understanding from these stories has formed that all humans and animals came

that the creator creates a small number of the species to then breed on and create a
world full of that species. In the Christianity myth God creates only two humans

Velma Gratch And The Way Cool Butterfly Analysis
This text analysis is based off the book Velma Gratch and the Way Cool Butterfly
by Alan Madison. The Lexile level of this book is AD750L, the reasoning behind
this rating is due to all the vocabulary placed throughout the book. In our study of
Beck from last semester, we explored the idea of tiered vocabulary. This book is
filled with tier three vocabulary including specific types of butterflies and the
different parts of a butterfly. These are terms that cannot be brought into a variety of
subjects and that are unlikely to be known previously by students. In addition,
there are also high level vocabulary words, that make the Lexile level go up as they
are only used once throughout the book. In Readability and the Common Core s

The book is a literal text, with some inferential ideas. Students would need to make
inferences about Velma and her decisions. Such as the reason that Velma does some
of the things she does, is so she is remembered as more than just the third Gratch
sister. In addition to having students make inferences, this book allows students to
activate their background knowledge and make predictions. Through the sibling
rivalry and idea of science students need to use what they already know to make the

African Culture in the Play, Death and the King s Horseman
Death and the King s Horseman is an interesting play because it brings forward the
culture of the Africans, specifically the Yoruba tribe, to the attention of the reader
that most probably come from a different background. There are many ways to read
this play for example, it may appears uneventful to some reader who only reads the
play literally as an entertainment but if the reader looks at this play as some cultural
study then the theme of understanding will surely be obvious and the reading will be
a tougher task as there are many things that must be taken into consideration such as
the clash of cultures (Soyinka 3) and threnodic essence (Soyinka 3), which is the
main theme of the play. Cultural tension between the Western cultureand the Yoruba s
culture can be felt throughout the play because the writer always draws the attention

For many, abandoned buildings hold keys to the past. They are places frozen in
time authentic, eerie, and intriguing all in the same. Photographer and mixed
media artist Samuel Quinn is one willing to break laws and trespass property in
order to explore and capture these deserted wonders. In 2008, while in the South
Shore driving his friend home, Quinn passed an eye catching abandoned white
house that stood lifeless in between two simple suburban homes. Two years later, in
need of a new project, he traveled back to the house and began taking photographs
for his portfolio A Houses Echo, which, as he describes, holds portraits of a family

A closed door with its decorated frame stands next to it. Quinn uses photo
manipulation to project a slide of one of the pictures left in the home. It is a
vacation photo taken by a family who once lived in the house. In it, we see a lake
with a reflection traveling towards brownish black mountains topped with snow.
Much of the wedding dress and the door are transparent, allowing the whole
vacation photo to be visible. An antique light fixture accompanies a wide open
doorway on the right wall. The picture plane is confined to a relatively small space.
It is mostly made up of straight lines, the majority of them being vertical or
horizontal. The lines of the stair railing and the right and left walls create a
directional force traveling from the foreground to the background. While observing
the print, viewers will be able to notice a pattern of rectangles repeating throughout
the image. There appears to be a monochromatic color scheme, based on the
distribution of varying shades of white, along with the brown railing, ceiling wood,
and stain in the lower corner of the right wall. This could also be considered a neutral
color scheme.
In Untitled 5 , viewers see the interior corner of a room on the upper floor of the
abandoned house. As with all of his photographs, Quinn staged this scene. He
discovered three wooden picture frames lying on the floor and positioned them on the
adjacent green walls that face the viewers.

America is known as the land of the free and home of the brave. When thinking of
this you think about all the opportunities presented to people and all the freedom.
An idea of America is that we re a meritocracy, which means anyone can be able to

Along with that many people believe that diversity will bring together the country
and unite us all but that s not the case. America is not a meritocracy. First off, it s
needed to look at how people move up in society, so looking at social mobility and

stratification is the way individuals are categorized in rankings by their wealth,
income, and social status. Social mobility is the movement of individuals
throughout these rankings. As stated, intelligence is not a factor of these ranks.
For example, actors get paid by the sales of their movies, meaning that if they are a
big time actor they can get paid millions of dollars and are very well known. These
actors do not show such intelligence that should qualify such a rank in society yet
they still accomplish it. But when it is looked upon doctors it is clear that they do
not make a mere fraction of that pay, they make only about $200,000. Doctors go
to school for years on end to aquire this mass of intelligence yet they are not viewed
as highly as actor in some people eyes. This is an example of how America doesn t

Meningitis Is An Infectious Disease
Every year, approximately 600 to 1,000 people are diagnosed from meningococcal
disease in the U.S, and only 15 percent die of people who get meningitis (Statistics).
However, after surviving from meningococcal disease, patients have high risks that
they will have to live with permanent disabilities. Nowadays, meningitisbecomes a
rare condition in the U.S. because of the improvement of the vaccine.
Comparing to the United States, many other countries in the world are still struggling
with meningococcal disease. For instance, WHO reported a meningitis outbreak,
which killed 545 people out of 8,234 meningitis patients in Nigeria (Reuters).
Meningitis is an infectious disease that can spread through airborne droplets, so an
outbreak from meningitis can turn out quickly to be an epidemic if the governments
don t get action. Also, many people have been mistaken the symptoms of meningitis
with flu and haven t got vaccinate for meningitis. Therefore, the most important
concern is how to raise awareness among people to get vaccinate because
meningococcal disease can easily spread out, especially in young ages from 11 to 24.

Perhaps the most interesting character in Thomas Hardy s Jude the Obscure is
Susanna Florence Mary Bridehead (Sue). Throughout the novel, she is described as
everything from boyish and sexless, all the way to Voltairean and just simply
unconventional. Some claim she had read prolifically many writers noted for their
frankness and/or indecency (Hardy 118). Upon a surface reading, one can t help but
wonder about the sexual identity and desires of Sue. At first, there seems to be none;

Henry David Thoreau is remembered for his naturalist writings and is considered a
leading transcendentalist. He was born in Concord, Massachusetts and began
writing nature poetry in 1840. Thoreau would later spend 2 years, 2 months, and 2
days living on Walden Pond in search of a simpler life, where he would gain
understanding and a great appreciation for the world around him and write about
his experiences. The writings of Thoreau can easily be compared to many of the
other authors that we have studied over this course, for example: the works of

countries and to follow their National Security Strategy (NSS). To aid the US in
analyzing different countries, the PMESII PT is used as a formula to keep
everyone on the same page. The PMESII PT contains eight different variables
which help the United States analyze how different countries can affect their
National Security Strategy. These variables include: political, military, economic,
social, information, infrastructure, physical terrain, and time. These variables can
be used to help better understand the situation and most important aspects of any

Freeman s lobotomy procedure at only the age of 12. His stepmother is actually
the person who took him to see Freeman simply because she wanted to do away

Richard Matheson s, I Am Legend, focuses on a dark, haunting dystopian society
highlighted using an array of rhetorical devices to create suspenseful and thrilling
action The rhetorical devices in the first third of the passage are used to paint a
picture of the man persuading Robert to follow him and be saved. The mysterious
man is portrayed as being unappealing and threatening. For example, the use of

Introduction: For my Mathematics Internal Assessment, I focused on how the
diameter of a blood droplet was affected by the height in which they were shot at.
When I watch criminal shows, they always estimate a person s height by the way
blood is spread out and I wondered if the diameter of a droplet really did change
with the height where they were shot at, and if it was an effective method of
presuming the height where the victim was hit at the time they were shot. This
topic has always interested me as when I was younger, I wanted to be a forensic
scientist and the way they solved crimes always intrigued me. Specifically, the way

tight, thousands of people flocked to the movie theaters. The new craze of talkies
had just arrived on the silver screen, with this, came the genre of film, horror.
Universal had already had their first major success with Tod Browning s 1931 film,
Dracula. With this success under Browning s belt, MGM studios wanted to join the
horror bandwagon. They offered Browning the opportunity the director the film,

According to the experiment results the hypothesis was proven to be correct. The
diabetics did indeed have a higher absorbance level than the non diabetics. It was
made clear that the rate at which a diabetic digests their meal is slower than a non
diabetic. It proves that fact that without sugar, the body could not function properly
because there would not be enough glucosein the body to provide energy in order to
make ATP. Without the main ingredient to make ATP the body would die. This fact
leads to the understanding as to why people with diabetes in third world countries are

Harvard University is the oldest institution of higher education in the United States. It
was founded in 1636. By the time of the Revolutionary War, there were nine colleges
in the United states, which is amazing considering that mother England had only
Cambridge and Oxford to educate her students. The colonial colleges Harvard,
William and Mary, Collegiate School (which became Yale), Academy of Philadelphia
