Chandler
Raymond Chandler, notable for his hard boiled mysteries, developed his own style
of writing. Mr. Chandler was born on July 23, 1888, however, his parents soon

early age, Mr. Chandler expressed an interest in literature. Throughout his adulthood,
he continued to live in both Los Angeles, California and London, England. While in
California, he composed multiple plays and screenplays. The majority of the stories
were based off of his writings, though some had different titles than the works.
Popular plays include Double Indemnity produced in 1946, and The Blue Dahlia in
1976. And Now Tomorrow, 1944, and The Unseen, 1945, are popular screenplays of
his. Overall, Mr. Chandler broadened the hard boiled mystery writing style with his
pieces that inspired numerous authors after him.

4. To What Extent Did Railroads Affect The Mexican Economy
To what extent did railroads affect the Mexican Economy in the years 1865 through
1929?
Section 1 Identification and Evaluation of Sources (499) The research question
that is being addressed is How did the development of railroads between 1865 to
1929 impact the Mexican economy? . The first source s origin is a book that is
titled The Civilizing Machine: A Cultural History of Mexican Railroads, 1876 1910
written by Michael Matthews. This source helped a lot in the process of gaining
information because the information was written in a way that could be understood
clearly. The purpose of this source is to inform the general public about what had

The purpose of this website was to inform the reader about the era of when Porfirio
DГaz was in office and how he had affected the country as a whole. The value of
this source was that there was a lot of information on this era so there would be a
lot to use. A limitation is that there is no known author so there it not much to do
if there were a question about information about the details in the article. The
source comes from a government run website which makes this a credible site.
The third, and last, source is an essay called Impact of Railroads in Mexico and
India written by Nick Cannon as a part of his series, Edges of Empire . The
purpose of this essay was to compare and contrast what was happening economically
in both Mexico and India. It showed their similarities and differences in a way where
each country had their own little section as to what specifically happened in that
country. The value of this article is the fact that although it is comparing Mexico to
India, there is a lot of information that shows just how advanced the railroads made
Mexico in comparison to another country, in this case India. There were definitely a
big limitation. Since there was comparing and contrasting in the whole essay, it was
difficult to understand what the author was trying to say. It seemed as though the
essay was a bit rushed due to the fact that the author was trying to give information
about both countries. Section 2 Investigation
5. Analysis Of The Panic Of 1819 By Monticello
The hardest time at Monticello in the chapter 9 explains how the eruption affected
people in the New england and throughout the world. The chapter talked about the
year without summer, eighteen and frozen death, and the panic of 1819. The year
without summer was not like any other summer people could remember, snow fell
in New England and dark and not al all like the typical summer weather. One of the
Vermonter said the most gloomy and extraordinary weather ever seen (Wood p. 203).
Snow storm swept the East coast of the United Statesin June. Since the weather was

7. Comparing Democracies And Future Of A Nation
Conceivably the most significant feature of a democracy is the electoral system,
which defines the history and future of a nation. In the scholarly article Comparing
Democracies: New Challenges in the Study of Elections and Voting , Lawrence
Leduc, Professor Emeritus of Political Science at the University of Toronto, writes,
the electoral system... defines how votes are cast and seats allocated . Consequently,
the electoral system determines which candidate emerges victorious from an election.
However, these electoral systems are not simple. Electoral systems can be qualified
as majoritarian, proportional, or mixed; however, the systems of different countries
all differ; especially in complexity and degree of representation. A webpage
published by Georgetown University created by Charles King states, There are many
different types of electoral systems in use around the world, and even within
individual countries, different electoral systems may be found in different regions
and at different levels of government . The astounding amount of different electoral
systems within singular nations displays how challenging it is to choose the system
best suited for a particular nation and its people. Differing electoral systems can even
potentially modify the outcome of elections. Leduc states, Applying two different
formulas to the same distribution of votes will produce quite different outcomes in
terms of members elected for each party . The fact that an electoral system can

10. Charles Darwin s Theory Of Natural Selection
CHARLES DARWIN AND THE THEORY OF NATURAL SELECTION
In this essay, I will first describe ways in which Charles Darwin s theory brought
change to his society. What is Charles Darwin s theory of natural selection about?
Natural selection is one of the basic mechanisms of evolution, along with mutation,
migration, and genetic drift. Evolution is the change in the heritable characteristics of
biological population over successive generations.(Wikipedia, 2016) Mutation on the
other hand refers to the change of structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that
may be transmitted to subsequent generations. It is caused by alteration of single
base units in DNA or the deletion, insertion, rearrangement of larger section of genes
or chromosomes. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It may seem strange but the latest technology was able to prove this is true when
embryos were put under a microscope; there were some similarities that were
discovered. Many people did not agree with this theory some even still do not still
think it is appropriate as it somehow contradicting with Christianity which states that
all living things were made by God. Which means people and other species that
went under evolution were also created by God and did not evolve. The theory was
later accepted by many people especially those who were also scientists.
When it comes to science, Charles Darwin s theory had such a huge impact because
ever since then scientists have been using the very same theory to explain natural
selection. Charles became the tool used to explain what is happening in the natural
world.
Scientists nowadays have discovered evidence to prove what Darwin said was
precisely right; they use DNA to explain mutation which cause variation and
diversity in species. DNA is used for a lot of things nowadays, can be used to catch
criminals and for paternity results.

Compare Men who march away and All the Hills and Vales along
Both poets present a differing attitude to war through literary techniques. Hardy
presents a very jingoistic, patriotic attitude to war through his use of language and
repetition. Whereas, Charles Sorely uses a less patriotic tone and focuses more on
war being very negative through his use of language, biblical imagery and structure.
Firstly, both poems are similar in that they both have a strict rhythm. In Men who
march away , the poem has five seven line stanzas which each stick to the same
rhyme scheme: ABBBAAB. He also uses alliteration often to create a steady rhythm
(e.g men who march ). Arguably, the obvious reason for this would be to create the

It s a good thing because you re committing yourself to history. Jesus is mentioned in
the next stanza, the Earth blossomed and was glad beneath his cross. This further
compares soldiers to Christ and glorifies death. Blossomed suggests something
new grew and more beautiful grew from his death, just like it would if a soldier
sacrificed his life. However, this is also ironic as Jesus sacrifice was to save
humanity of their sins. The soldier would ve been contributing to mass murder,
which is a massive sin.
In contrast to this, Hardy uses a much less obvious but still powerful religious
reference. He talks about the faith and fire within us and repeats this. The repetition
of it highlights the prominence of religion at the time to every man and the fact that it
was a massive part in them fighting the war. Moreover, it highlights the fact that men
thought God would guide them, all they needed was the faith and fire to see them
through the war. However, on a non religious level, it might also highlight the fact
that men thought the war would end. They had faith that they were going to war for
a just cause and that they would pull through. As it was written before the worst of
the war, this is genuinely what men believed.
It s interesting that both poets use religion to inspire and insight something deep
within soldiers as religion was massively important and influential. However, they do
it in different ways. Hardy reminds the men that their
12. An Extraordinary Man From Demark
On October 7, 1885, an extraordinary man from Demark was born. A baby boy, who
was yet to find out the impact he would have on this world. This man was Niels Bohr,
and he made fundamental contributions in the way one can understand the atom s
structure. In addition to the structure, he also had an impact in the early development
in quantum mechanics. His impact not only made a change in history, but also
changed the way people looked at the atoms structure. We can now build and learn
from Niels Bohrand his foundations.
Originating from Denmark, reigns an intelligent man from a well educated family.

University of Copenhagen. Bohr s mother, Ellen, came ... Show more content on

With this remarkable paper, he was the recipient of the medal from the Royal Danish
Academy of Sciences. According to Oppenheim, his research topic was based on his
analysis of vibrations of water, due to surface tension. After this, he completed his
doctorate in 1911, under the physicist Christian Christiansen. For his post doctoral
education, Bohr moved to England. He conducted his experiments at Trinity College,
and then moved on to the University of Manchester. While at the University of
Manchester, he began his interest in the structure of the atoms. He wanted to know
what was going on inside an atom. Bohr studied the way atoms behaved and came up
with a model that gave an explanation.
In addition, Bohr studied the models of the atom that were already used by scientists
and improved on them with a new model. This model would give better explanations
on how atoms worked. His new model, Bohr, was named after him. In the Bohr
model, positively charged protons and neutral neutrons are securely detained in the
nucleus of the atom. Negatively charged electrons move around the nucleus in
defined orbits. The motion of the electrons in the Rutherford model was not reliable
due to the classical mechanics and electromagnetic theory. These theories state, any
charged particle moving on a curved path releases electromagnetic radiation.
Therefore, the electrons would lose energy and coil into the nucleus. Bohr modified
the Rutherford model and stated that the electrons move in

assists such as goodwill and operating licences (Teen, 2012). The 2006/7 financial
year began with $37.4 million of goodwill and $647.6 million of childcare licences
(Teen, 2012). The value of goodwill and licenses increased up $271 million and
$2.4 million respectively by the close of the 2007/8 financial year (Teen, 2012).
However, the impairment charges or write down charges for assets with a balance

childcare licences and $2 million for goodwill in these two financial years (Teen,

This highlights the importance of company s operating cash flow, which may well be
a more realistic indication of a company s financial viability (Teen, 2012).
The question of cash flow is especially relevant, when it is taken into account how
many companies have met their downfall, having recorded a profit, while having
operating cash flow problems (Teen, 2012). Eddy Groves and other ABC directors
attempts to hide or temporarily alleviate the cash flow problems by the practice of
pledging their shares to borrow money, or disguising payments from developers as
profits from subsidised loss making centres only served to exacerbate the problem
(Kruger, 2009; Teen, 2012). In the case of share pledging for example, where
shares were sold amounting to 5.6 percent of the company, the share price was
lowered further due to a glut of shares on the market (Teen, 2012). Several ABC s
lenders were leading banks, as it became apparent the company was in trouble ABC
attempted to renegotiate loan agreements with the banking syndicate however, the
recovery scheme was rejected by the bankers (Teen, 2012).This is quite
understandable because, as Teen (2012) points out intangiable assets are quite often
viewed as having little or no value when a company is in difficulty. Apart from the
issue of poor accounting and financial management ABC also had problems in other
aspects of the corporate governance

The problem here is that Paul was just driving to work. He was not intentionally

First of all, have you ever noticed that if you travel on Interstate 45 or on Interstate
20 for a long enough distance that there is always construction dealing with the
resurfacing or complete revamping of the roadway. Have you ever wondered why
they are working on the road or thought that it was just another government scam to
cost the taxpayers more money? The common thought asserted here is that higher
speeds create more wear and tear on the roadways. Another factor of speeding is
damage inflicted on cars while drivers are driving fast. This side asserts that the
faster the car runs, the harder the engine works; the harder the engine, works the
more wear the car takes. This may have been true with automobiles made several
years ago, but the cars and trucks manufactured today are quality automobiles. They
are tested very rigorously in order to withstand wear and tear. Second, the
government would also like us to believe that driving high speeds causes more
deaths than driving slowly. According to the Transportation Accident Commission,
Last year Victoria recorded its worst road toll in a decade, with speed being the
main cause of fatalities (36%) and serious injury (33%). (Transport Accident
Commission) This group is asserting that a person speeding is more likely to cause
death than a person not speeding. According to P.E. Spitz:
15. Psychology
Section One 1 When psychology first began to become a science in 1860, it was
more of a field of philosophy than an actual medical study. It dealt with a more
abstract concept than other medical fields; the human body is something concrete
that you can physically look at and study whereas, at the time, you could not
physically see the mind. In Ancient Greece thinkers such as Aristotle and Plato could
only come up with theories as to how the mind works. Plato believed that some
knowledge is innate while Aristotle believed that the ability to learn depended on
experience, however neither were able to prove their theories with concrete evidence.

is also possible for the conditioned response to become extinct but the little girl may

could only develop a fear of tarantulas specifically, which would be stimuli

Section Five 10 Classical conditioning is when a neutral stimulus causes a response
when paired with a stimulus that naturally cases a response. Operant conditioning is a
type of learning where the consequences of a behavior determine if that action will
be repeated. Both classical conditioning and operant condition have stimuli that
enforces a behavior, yet the main difference is that in classical condition the learning
is not up to the individual but in operant condition the learned behavior is in the
hands of the individual. Ivan Pavlov was the main contributor to classical
conditioning. While studying the amount of saliva dogs had to certain foods, he
noticed that the dogs would salivate while in the harness in anticipation for the food.
He then conducted an experiment where he used a bell as he gave the dogs their
food and he conditioned them to salivate when hearing the bell. The only limitation to

Leaders of Our Society
Are human rights prominent enough to be defended? In the eyes of Gandhi,
Harriet Tubman, and Oprah, they are. Gandhi was a man who wanted to end racial
justice in all parts of the world, while Harriet Tubman wanted to help guide the
slaves from the South to the North so that they can live a free life. However, instead
of taking a more direct approach, Oprah Winfrey used a public method. These three
passionate individuals stood up to enact change by fighting for human rights and
staying persistent and determined. Mahatma Gandhi enacted change by striving to
end racial injustice. He did this to show that anyone of any race or religion should
have equal rights. According to Satyagraha: Gandhi s Legacy , it states, Gandhi
developed his philosophy of Satyagraha, or resistance through non violent civil
disobedience to defend his rights and the rights of all Indians and non whites
(Studysync Editors). Gandhi himself had been faced with discrimination.
However, instead of ignoring the situation, Gandhi took a stand and did what was
right to ensure equality among all people. The Studysync Editors stay, As had
been the case in the southern United States, Indians and other non white people
were forced to ride at the back of trains, use separate facilities, and were treated as
second class citizens. Gandhi believed that this was wrong . With his opinions in
mind, Gandhi decided to get his beliefs out by starting non violent protest. As the
leader he was, he lead many protests that included: unfair taxes and oppressive
discrimination, as well as alleviating poverty, helping in the women s liberation
movement, and ending caste discrimination. Studysync Editors wrote, Gandhi s
work inspired large scale global change. Resistance to British involvement in South
Africa and in India helped to inspire a movement of decolonization all over the
world. Several political and spiritual leaders were inspired by Gandhi s work... .
Gandhi s influence to the civilization was a huge turning point for those of the non

Nonetheless, joint tenancy is particularly beneficial when property is transferred
from one party to another mainly in families to escape probate and expensive legal

therefore, the foreclosure should be argued based on Peter was not a legal owner

Sense and Sensibility is an elegant story that portrays the advantages of the first over
the second, as manifested between two sisters of opposing temperaments, one of
whom loves wisely and the other passionately. Set in London and its surrounding
countryside, the story relates how Elinor, the eldest of Mrs. Dashwood s daughters,
and Marianne, the second eldest, share in the agony of tragic love. In the opening of
the book, Mrs. Dashwood and her three daughters are forced to move to a new and
smaller abode, as her husband s death left her fairly unwealthy.
During their transition, the Dashwood s stayed with her step son and his wife, Mr.

he had done to Marianne and to ask for as much forgiveness as they were willing to

forgiven him, and Elinor.
Upon the arrival of Mrs. Dashwood at Cleveland, Marianne quickly grew strong
again and they were soon able to make their way back to Barton. As Elinor sat by

Liberalism and Conservatism
Nearly all Americans identify themselves with ideologies that don t discount another
existing ideology. Most people are Liberals or Conservatives because they have their
own attitude regarding our society. Liberalism and conservatism handle their issues
with entirely different philosophies. Liberals and Conservatives beliefs cover a wide
range of issues that are influenced or established by the kind of principles they
embrace. The two most common ideologies in American politics are Liberalism and
Conservatism. Liberalism believes that they are people in the world that needs help.

Conservatism beliefs have influenced human rights practices by supporting certain

In conclusion, Liberalism and Conservatism both have the same goals for prosperity,
but have complete different ways of accomplishing them. The differences between
liberalism and conservatism are vast, but they center on the basic beliefs within each
ideology. Both liberalism and conservatism beliefs support the status quo. Both
liberalism and conservatism beliefs are deep seated in America s principles of

21. Heart Disease And Cardiovascular Disease
Per the 2015 Heart Disease and Stroke Statistics Update , cardiovascular heart
disease (CVD) strikes once every 43 seconds (American Heart Association, 2014).
The term heart disease is often used interchangeably with the term cardiovascular
disease. Cardiovascular disease refers to a gamut of diseases or complications that
affect the heart. Different forms of a heart disease include coronary arterydisease, a
disease of bloodvessels; heart rhythm problems, such as arrhythmias; heart
infections; prohibiting oxygen from entering, which would result in a myocardial
infarction, commonly known as a heart attack; stroke; and heart defects which may
affect babies at birth, called congenital heart defects. In more severe cases, the blood

According to the Mayo Clinic (2014), the tests required to diagnose heart disease
depends on an individual s medical and family histories as well as his/her results
from a physical exam, blood tests, and a chest X ray (MAYO Clinic, 2014). Doctors
generally recommend the following tests to diagnose heart disease:
1.Electrocardiogram (EKG), records electrical signals to detect irregularities in heart s
rhythm and structure.
2.Holter monitoring, a portable device wear to record a continuous ECG and detect
irregularities that aren t found during a regular ECG exam.
3.Stress Testing, one exercises to make the heart work hard and beat fast; if unable to

23. Effects Of Pre Harvest Factors On The Final Quality Of A...
Effects of Pre harvest Factors
Pre harvest factors can influence the final quality of a product including papaya. Post
harvest product qualities develop during growing of the product and are maintained
and not improved by post harvest technologies (Hewett, 2006). Depending on the
cultivar, maturity, climate, soil type and fertility, the nutritional composition of a fruit
at harvest can vary widely. For example Banana and papayas increase in carotenoid
content with maturation and ripeness, but the ascorbic acid content decrease in
bananas and increase in papayas during ripening (Lee, 2000).Even within a cultivar,
there is a large plant to plant variation and within plant variation in nutrient
composition of fruit harvested from the same field (Shewfelt, 1990).
Water availability, sunlight, fertilization and chemical applications are some of the
pre harvest factors which not only affect crop growth but also internal quality
characteristics of the harvested product, including flavor. Pre harvest treatment with
aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) suppressed volatile production in pears by 50% and
heavy rains prior to harvest dilute flavor compounds in tomato (Romani R, 1983).
Effects of Harvest Maturity
Maturity is among the critical factors influencing the abundance of volatile
compounds in papaya fruit. To optimize volatile content for flavor, papaya fruits
should be harvested at an optimal eating quality as opposed to immature papaya fruits
which are often harvested in order to
24. Importance Of Self Reflection
Research has been increasingly done on learning and self reflect and its
effectiveness, one of the first researchers john Dewey stated, we do not learn from
experience... We learn from reflecting on experience. John believed that deep
learning comes from array of experience, reflection, abstraction, and active testing.
James Zull s (2002) fascinating book on the biology of learning, points out
evidence that the learning cycles arises naturally from the structure of the brain.
Donald Schon also amongst the first to write about reflective practice with his
exploration of experience, interaction and reflection with his book the reflective
practitioner in 1983, Donald defines reflective practice as the practice by which
professionals become receptive of the implicit knowledge base and learn from
their experience. The practitioners allowed Donald to experience puzzlement,
surprise or confusion in a situation which is found uncertain or unique. Self
reflection is like considering a mirror and describing what you see. The term refers
to an activity or process in which an experience is recalled, considered and
evaluated to gain insight on oneself, ones valued or knowledge gained. The ability
to reflect on experience encourages insight and complex learning. In contrast, self
reflection is a process used to study one s own performance in order to improve it. In
order for one to succeed, it is vital to have knowledge of what each strengths and
weaknesses are for self development

Since 1994, the number of American adults over 50 who are providing care to
their parents has tripled and now exceeds 10 million (National Institute on Aging

revenues have been estimated at $264 billion (Freedonia Group 2008), of which
54% went to in home care services and assisted living in 2006 (Reuters 2008).
While much in home care is medical care, nonmedical assistance is also common.
In 2000, over 378,000 Americans over age 75 were receiving paid, in home
assistance with daily activities such as shopping, transportation, and grooming
that fall outside of the category of medical care (National Center for Health

family or friends available to provide assistance, but most paid caregivers join an
existing group of family members or friends who are already helping the older

in class and in the business world to be attractive to the reader and effective in getting
your point across.
Approach: * Read the entire case carefully before you actually begin to write the

Format and Style:
Boston University emphasizes standards of effective oral and written business
communication, because these skills are important to your career success. Therefore
you are expected to follow the requirements of good business writing and the
specific requirements of the course. Failure to follow these rules (e.g. papers over
length, excessive misspellings, incorrect citations, etc.) will result in papers being
downgraded. Likewise follow Boston University s rules on plagiarism and academic
conduct.
Specific requirements * Papers should be organized into paragraphs, written in
complete sentences, and broken into clearly titled sections as per the outline above.
Note that generally shorter rather than longer paragraphs make for better
communication, and that it is better to have too many titled sections than too few.
* Use correct spelling and grammar. You should use a spell checking program on
your computer, and * personally proof read your papers. If English is a second
language for you, ask an English speaking friend to check your writing and grammar

28. An Analysis of The Pilgrim’s Progress Essay
A question has arisen concerning the conflicts used in John Bunyan s The Pilgrims
Progress; the first half of the book was originally published in sixteen seventy eight
while the second half was published in sixteen eighty four. Guilt, deception, shame,
and fear are all major conflicts the author uses that challenge the main characters,
Christian and Christiana, on their journey to the celestial city. Perhaps the hardest
conflict Bunyan has Christian and his wife face is guilt. John Bunyans books have
been some of the most popular books in Christian society. The novel itself has even
been called second to the bible. (Second is referring to the number of copies that
have been sold.) While the book itself has Christian represent an... Show more content

The modern version of the book is similar to a combination of old world and
modern English. Pilgrim s Progress uses hymns as a foreshadowing event alluding
to a minor character s demise or a good event. John Bunyan starts the book off as if
the narrator is sleeping and has a dream. He also uses imagery from the bible
which includes the celestial city and the river of death. Bunyan grew up in a home
that was poor but he still had a love for the gospel. At one point in his life he was
arrested for preaching the gospel without being licensed to preach. The story is
written in first person so it is read like the story is being told to the reader. The
limitations of the narrator would most likely be that he is not able to describe the
feelings of the dream characters with enough accuracy. The reason for this is the
narrator is experiencing a dream but he is not actually feeling the feelings that the
dream character is feeling. The language of the book itself started off in old English
but has been updated throughout the ages so that it is in modern English. A
limitation the narrator has is he does not know what will happen in the future and he
cannot influence the outcome of the story. An example of symbolism would be the
burden that Christian has to carry on part of his journey. His burden represents the
sins that he has committed and the burden will only fall

30. John Lewis Reflection
Mahatma Gandhi died nearly seventy years ago, and Jesus Christ died over two
thousand years ago; yet their powerful message still continues to inspire lives. One
example of someone who was deeply touched by the teaching of Gandhi and Christ
is John Lewis. In March: Book one, written by John Lewis and Andrew Aydin, we
can clearly see how Lewis incorporated Christianity and Gandhi s ideas of peaceful
protest into the civil rights movement. The book tells an eventful story of John
Lewis life. As Lewis grew up, his faith strengthened and he began involving
himself in the civil rights movement. He played a major role in desegregating
department store lunch counters by using Gandhi and Christ s ideas of loving
your enemy. Although significant people John Lewis had met, such as Martin
Luther King, clearly played a key role in developing his character, it is evident
throughout the trilogy that the people who impacted John Lewis the most were
those he had never met. The teachings of Jesus Christ and Mahatma Gandhi appear
to have positively influenced Lewis life in ways no one he met had. It is obvious
that John Lewis was clearly a Christ follower. This is evident throughout both book
one and two. All through John s life, from when he was not even able to read, to
when he was older and able to write his own book, John stayed true to his faith in
God. He states, Growing up, what I really wanted to be was a preacher. My uncle
gave me a bible when I was four (Lewis and

Model
This essay addresses the working memory model which was proposed by Baddeley
and Hitch (1974 in Smith Kosslyn, 2007) as a response to Atkinson and Shiffrins
(1968 in Smith, 2007) multi store model. According to Baddely and Hitch the multi
store model failed to explain most of the complexities of the human memory and
viewed it as being too simplistic. They argued that the short term memory store must
have more components rather it being a single inflexible store as suggested
previously by Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968). The working memorymodel is therefore
an enhancement of the multi store model. According to Baddeley and Hitch working
memory is a limited capacity system that stores and processes information.

This is interpreted as because the capacity of the phonological loop is limited in time
(in Smith, 2007).
Further evidence for the existence of the phonological loop comes from Conrads
and Hulls (1975 in Passer, 2009) experiment in which they examined the effect of
phonological similarity. They found that serial recall in a list of similar sounding
words tended to yield poorer results with participants finding it difficult to remember
compared to words that sounded different. It has also been found that recall in
semantically similar words tended to have little or no effect, supporting the idea that
verbal information is transferred in a phonological manner in working memory. In
addition, Vallar and Papagno (1995 in Smith, 2007) found that the phonological store
in brain damaged patients were dysfunctional.
Moreover, Hardyk and Petrinovich (1970 in Parkin, 1993) found the articulatory loop
to be crucial when being presented with complex information. In their study they
measured participants throat muscle and forearm muscle activity although some may
argue that this was not a good technique to carry out. Their findings led to them
conclude that when participants were presented with complex material their
articulatory loop would come in to function (in Parkin, 1993).
In addition, memory span tasks support the existence of the articulatory loop showing
that task ability heavily depends on a

Octavian and Antony No contemporaries could have possibly known for sure as to
who the victor would be from the conflict that arose between Gaius Julius Ceasar
Octavianus, Octavian, and Marcus Antonius, Antony. However, knowing what the
ultimate outcome of the struggle was, one may be able to look back into history
and offer key reasons as to why Octavian was able to defeat Antony. Ultimately, I
believe there was not one key reason for Octavian victory. It was a combination of
Octavian s proximity to Rome, his favor with the citizens, and the elimination of his
opposition at home that all combined to allow his eventual triumph. Overlooking
some smaller details, it is first important to know that after Julius Ceasar s
assassination that Octavian was named his heir and returned to Italy to claim this
inheritance. From here, he gathered military power and allowed the senate to use
him, in order to advance his political position, and he was sent to fight against a
rebellious Antony. At this point, Octavian did not try to decimate Antony s forces,
instead he proposed and ultimately formed the second triumvirate with Antony and
Lepidus as the other heads of the state (Wells 13). From here, the Roman territories
were divided into areas of governorship with Antony taking the east, Octavian the
west, and Lepidus had the Africa territories (Wells 17). This would turn out to be one
of the main contributing factors in Octavian s ultimate success; for it allowed him the

the universean infinitude in which we, as a species, have yet to achieve our fullest

In the first paragraph, Borges writes of the universe in a mathematical manner that
relates the abstract generalization of the known to the unknown: The line is made up
of an infinite number of points; the plane of an infinite number of lines; the volume

What we know about time and life, in this context, is continually growing, unlimited

broaden our understanding to any infinite degree. So long as we operate in a truly

37. The Importance Of Maritime Rights In America
In the early eighteen hundreds France and Britain were at war. The Napoleonic
powers were starting to gain more sway in Europe, and Britain was trying to control
America as much as it could. Relations were beginning to strain, and America felt that
its rights had been violated by Great Britain. The main factors that drove the United
Statesto war with Great Britain were the protection of maritime rights, the drive to
expand American soil, and the wish to portray America as an honorable nation. The
main component which drove the US to war was the need to prove America was a
great nation capable of protecting their rights, their people, and their honor.
The main factor, that being the verification of America as a great nation,
encompassed most of the others, including the need to protect United States maritime
rights. During this time of conflict leading up to the war British forces would capture
American ships and then take many sailors as prisoners, this practice was called
impressment. The United States Committee on Foreign Relations claimed that the
nation s maritime rights were being infringed and in a congressional report informed
the people that Great Britain, in defiance of this incontestable [clear and certain]
right, captures every American vessel ... enslaves our seamen, and in spite of our

Wallace uses quotes from many different people throughout the novel, whether he has
known them for a long time or had just met them. These quotes add to the theme of
the story because it gives other characters input besides the authors alone. It proves
that others think this way as well and expect something to be a certain way, when
in reality it happens to be the complete opposite. Wallace expected a Midwesterner,
who he was interviewing at a state fair, about what others thought of what she did,
he asked, So this doesn t bother you? As a Midwesterner, you re unbothered? Or
did you just not have an accurate sense of what was going on back there? The lady
simply replied with, So if I noticed or I didn t, why does it have to be my deal?
What, because there s assholes in the world I don t get to ride on The Zipper? I
don t ever get to spin? Maybe I shouldn t ever go to the pool or get all girled up,
just out of fear of assholes? (101). After Wallace asks how this woman feels and
what others say she should feel after her embarrassment, and instead of being
terrified she did not seem to care. The woman told Wallace that just because she
should feel a certain way does not mean she will, insisting that she can do whatever
she pleases, even after many people tell her she should not. Following talking to that
woman, Wallace interviewed a gentleman during the same fair. He asked the man,
But would they want to? Your kids I mean. Would they want to hit the Hollow, ride

would expect this man to say yes because that is what a great deal of people go to the

indicating the killer had knowledge of human anatomy. Jack was never captured, and
remains one of England s, and the worlds , most infamous criminals. The place of the
murders of the five prostitutes all took place within a mile of each other, and
involved the districts of Whitechapel. In autumn of 1888 the police, claiming
definitive of the brutal killer s identity, never apprehended Jack, despite the countless
investigations. The killer name and motive was still unknown. The moniker Jack the

When Jack the Ripper s murders suddenly stopped, in the Fall of 1888, London
citizens wanted answers that would not come, even more than a century later. The
ongoing case which has spawned an industry of books, films, TV series, and
historical tours has met with a number of hindrances, including lack of evidence, a
gamut of misinformation and false testimony, and tight regulations by the Scotland
Yard. Jack the Ripper has been the topic of news stories for more than 120 years,
and will likely continue to be for decades to come. More recently, in 2011, British
detective Trevor Marriott, who has long been investigating the Jack the Ripper
murders, made headlines when was denied access to uncensored documents
surrounding the case by Metropolitan police. According to a 2011 ABC News article,
London officers had refused to give Marriot the files because they included protected
information about police informants, and that handing over the documents could
impede on the possibility of future testimony by modern day
40. Teenage Girls
As a matter of fact, teenage girls are not the only ones who fall victim to the ideal
of beauty. Teenage boys are going through very similar situations. Media and
advertisements set their standards for men to be tall, muscular, board upper body,
v line and have beards etc. Neither males nor females live without having standards
set up for them by society and media. Widely held perceptions of beauty and
perfection can have a deep and lasting cultural impact on both women and men.
Some impact is that these standards will continue to exist in our future culture and
both genders will never feel comfortable in their own skin/body. Both men and
women would continue to judge themselves and their beauty. Magazines and
advertisements usually have images of men without their shirts in order to show
off their muscles and to attract customers. This makes members of society expect
to see a six pack,v line and pectorals when a male takes off their shirt. This gives
teenage boys fear to take off their shirt when going to the beach or smaller
situations like going inside a pool because they are scared to be criticized for not
being muscular. Magazines display images of these fake models for both men and
women which creates intimidation. Study of mass mediamagazines discovered that
women s magazines had 10.5 times more advertisements and articles promoting
weight lossthan men s magazines did (as cited in Guillen Barr.1944). The ideal of
beauty targets women more than men. In

Introducing Object Oriented Programming to Engineering Technology students with
an App Development Tool Abstract: Object oriented programming concepts are
frequently a difficult topic for Engineering Technology educators to teach to students
that have no previous object oriented programming experience. With the recent rise of
mobile computing, a powerful and robust tool is now available to easily develop
software for the Android mobile device operating system. Through App development
with a highly interactive interface and real time device feedback, difficult
programming concepts are conveyed in a highly visual and tactile learning
environment. Introduction The need for OOP and a better way to teach it.
Introducing object oriented computer programming (OOP) to Engineering
Technology students who have never programmed is often difficult. Even those
students who have programmed before in other non object based languages are often
apprehensive or completely lost when introduced to Java and related OOP languages.
This apprehension inhibits the learning process and has shown a need for a more
inviting development environment aside from the blank text document with which
the student is presented. A modern mobile platform application (app) development
tool offers an innovative and exciting approach to the introduction of many basic
programming skills. This free software development tool called MIT App Inventor
(Abelson, 2011) or simply AppInventor provides an inviting
42. My Reflection Essay
I ve always considered myself a fairly decent writer but we all have room to
improve. I just like everyone, sometimes miss errors in my writing no matter how
hard I look over my writings. People that know me often enjoy my writings because
they understand my writing style or how I think but sometimes my errors that I miss
deter others from enjoying my writing. I would like for more people to be able to
connect with the things I am writing about, this is why I am working hard this
semester to fix my errors and understand how to prevent those errors in the first
place. One way that I can improve my writing is by being more attentive to what I
am actually writing instead of allowing my feelings to overwhelm my thoughts. I
can fix my problem of losing focus on what I am writing by going back and
rereading what I have already written before continuing on. I need to focus on
making sure that I am writing from a first person point of view instead of
accidentally changing over to second person out of habit. After I personally
proofread what I have written, I should either have a peer edit my paper or use an
online resource from the classroom to help edit any mistakes I may have missed.
Improving the way I write my essays is something I believe I can 100% improve on
by staying focused. One strength in my writing that I have noticed so far this
semester is that I am able to structure my paragraphs in a way that my writing can
easily be comprehended. Acknowledging my strengths in my
43. Daphne Du Maurier Research Paper
Daphne du Maurier is one of the most interesting female authors of Gothic literature
in the twentieth century because of her unique style of writing and her background.
She is famous for many literary successes during her lifetime. Her literature is
unique because she was capable of adding a romantic twist to her gothic style of
writing. She borrowed ideas from many other gothic authors and mixed them
together so that the finished product was her very own (Buzwell). Some of her fans
also believe that Daphne s different style of writing resulted from her odd childhood (
Birth ).
Daphne was born on May 13, 1907 in London, England. On the night Daphne was
born, there was a harsh thunderstorm. I think it is safe to say that the weather on that

The theme of the book is how dangerous innocence can be, which was a huge belief
that Daphne carried with her almost all of her life. One author, Frank Magil, says,
In Rebecca du Maurier is suggesting that in the real world, innocence can be
dangerous, even fatal. It is experience, no innocence, knowledge, not ignorance,
which enable the narrator to survive (432). Daphne also showed how dangerous she
thought it was for women to be too submissive to men in this novel, she thought it
was deadly for both people in the relationship. Readers who have read Rebecca
automatically assume that she relates herself to the protagonist of the book, Bride,
but she actually relates herself to the antagonist, Rebecca (Magil 432). Just like
Rebecca, Daphne cheated on her spouse a numerous amount of times, she was
rebellious in her marriage and didn t seem to regret it as much as she should have.
Daphne du Maurier is one of the most interesting female authors of Gothic literature
in the twentieth century because of her unique style of writing and her background.
She had a psychologically rough childhood and some of her confusion rolled over
into her adult life as well. One thing was certain, she had a gift of taking a style and
story and making it her own. Although she kept to herself most of the time, she had a
