How does your media product represent particular social groups
1. How does your media product represent particular
social groups?
The characters within this film range from the age of 10 to over 45. This is done
deliberately to show the audience the different social groups that are affected by
the events that occur in the film. Unlike most Slasher/Horror films which for the
most part only effect Young Adults within their narrative. It is also worth noting
that every character has little back-story to them due to the lack of dialogue in
the film. This was done deliberately because the fact that you know next to
nothing about all the characters involved adds more mystery to the story. It
would also make sense to know little about the victims that are killed within the
narrative as the protagonist is the killer within the story and not the victims like
most Horror films. The audience are meant to question why these people were
killed and what made them deserve such a grim fate. While most of this is left to
the imagination of the audience, I'm going to go through why certain groups and
characters are used in the film.
The murderer within the film is a sick and twisted individual. He seems to have
no morality at all as he will kill children and elders without a sign of regret on his
face. He will sit and smile to himself when observing the fresh corpses of the
people he has just killed He is presented as the protagonist within this scene as
there is no character other than him to relate to due to all of the other characters
being murdered swiftly by the murderer not giving time for the audience to get
to know them. The murderer's intentions are unknown giving him a much more
fearful presence as the audience do not know why he would murder so many
people and feel happy about it. I have deliberately presented him in a negative
manner despite being the protagonist because; obviously, murder is one of the
worst crimes you can commit.
The common traits with the murderer are that stereotypically he is a male
character to show his dominance over the other characters. He has a
conventional mask to hide his face and a phallic object (which in this case is a
knife) to kill his victims. It is also worth noting that the murderer looks as if he is
a young adult or in his late teens, which adds to the speculation that he has a
connection with the other teenagers in the story. I would not say that I am
attacking teenage culture by having the killer be aged in the same bracket as the
victims are. I do feel that I am representing perhaps negative aspects of
teenagers such as anger, and rebellion within their social lives. If anything I am
representing mentally unstable individuals through my killer who have the
potential to harm each other and themselves. In some ways I am showing that
people with mental illnesses need help and attention to help them when they are
perhaps in a harshly negative state of mind.
The teenagers within the film are shown in the opening shot of the film all dead
in the living room of the household. It is uncommon to see so many teenagers in
one house when they do not look related. It is clear to the audience that the
teenagers are there for a social gathering or a party due to balloons seen in
certain shots. The teenagers within the film are perceived as being careless with
2. one of them having his t-shirt off in the house, which is seen as anti social if there
is no reason to justify it. Here I would say that I am making a statement about
Youth culture instead of within the killer. Teenagers can be reckless at parties
and these parties themselves usually include under-age drinking and loud music.
I feel I am representing them in dubious manner as you feel sympathy for them
as they have been killed when they are supposed to be at their happiest and
relaxed.
The parents in the film are clearly the owners of the house and are letting the
teenagers stay around for a social gathering. Their son is the shirtless teenager
seen in the first shot of the film. They also fall victim to the murderer for reasons
unknown. It is clear that they are the homeowners of the house within the film.
The Parents are used within the plot to show that they are at just as a risk to
grizzly murders than teenagers are. The stereotyping of teenagers being the only
ones in danger and die horrible ways is unjustified as everyone realistically can
be victim to an attack such as the one presented in the film. They give the
audience a realistic insight into massacres instead of only young adults and
teenagers being victim. The main child in the narrative is the only character in
the story who we see alive before his death. His character is used in the same the
parents/elders are used in the story. People never think about how children can
be affected in situations in this. It is meant to disturb the audience with the fact
that the murderer would leave no survivors from his killing spree within the
household.
