The document summarizes audience research conducted to inform the planning of a music video. A survey asked people about the music videos they enjoy and their preferences. Respondents enjoyed creative videos by artists like Kendrick Lamar that use interesting editing. They preferred genres like hip hop and rap. They wanted videos that are fun, creative, and avoid being boring or cheaply made. Costume, location, and incorporating a subliminal message that leaves an impression were also important factors. The goal is to create an innovative, trippy video that complements the music.
2. Audience Research
For my audience research I conducted a survey asking people what they thought
about the music videos that they enjoy watching. I distributed this amongst my
potential target audience so I could get the most accurate results that will help me
make decisions or even influence the choices I will make when planning, filming
and editing my music video.
3. Question 1
What music videos do you enjoy at the
moment?
This question got a range of responses because it was a very broad question that
could get a lot of different answers from the artists in the video to the genre of the
song the video was made about. Here are some relevant answers that could
influence he music video the I make.
“At the moment I enjoy Kendrick Lamar "HUMBLE" and "DNA" as they both have
really interesting editing techniques”
“Anything to do with pop or grime, something colourful and fun nothing that drags
on for too long”
These answers tell me that they want to have a very creative music video that uses
a range of editing techniques as well as having very popular music in the
background.
4. Question 2
What is your favourite genre of music?
I asked this question to get a brief idea of what type of video I would be expected
to make because each genre tends to use one type of music video more than
another. These genres are the most consistent ones, the ones that came up the
most.
Hip Hop & Rap
From this I can gather that the type of video that would be enjoyed most by my
target audience is performance based music videos and the song that I choose
should be from one of these genres.
5. Question 3
What type of music video do you enjoy
watching?
What I intended to gain from this question is
ultimately what type of video that I would be doing.
The responses that I got show that people enjoy
different types of music video and the choice that I
make might not be liked by some of my target
audience but I will do what I think will make the
most creative music video.
6. Question 4
Think of a music video you enjoy watching, what
do you like about that video?
I asked this question to se what parts of the music video I should focus on getting
right so my target audience would find my video more appealing. Once again this
question allowed for a lot of different answers and here are the ones that I believe
will influence my decision for the music video I make.
“The fact that it is different. I usually like trippy things that have you wondering
how they even came up with it.”
“I like the fact there is loads of different costumes as I like the artist style of I can
copy what they have done”
These comments tell me that if the video is creative, in terms of editing, and
relatable, in terms of the costume choices, then I believe that the video would be
successful amongst my target audience.
7. Question 5
Think of a music video you don't like watching,
what don't you like about that video?
I asked this question so I could simply avoid doing the things so my music video
can be enjoyed by my target audience. The responses that I got was basically the
same so here are the answers the came up consistently.
“Boring and irrelevant.” & “it was done cheaply and you can tell they had bad
acting in it and didn't make sense to the song”
From these responses, I know that I have to make sure the video is fun and upbeat
as well as being professional to make sure the video doesn’t look “cheaply” done.
8. Question 6
Would the costume of the artist change your
view on a music video?
I asked this question to see if certain parts of
mise-en-scene would affect the audiences
choice to watch the video. This question was
about the costume and from the responses I
can see that costume will have to be a very
important part of my planning as my potential
target audience find it very important.
9. Question 7
Would the location of the video change your
view on a music video?
This question asked if location was
important and the response once
again shows that it is very
important. That means that when I
am planning my music video I need
to make sure that the location is
relevant to the video.
10. Question 8
What would make your perfect music video?
Finally, I rounded off the survey with this question to see if there was any consistent
requests that my target audience had when they were asked what would make their
perfect video. All the responses was basically the same, they wanted to have a fun and
creative music video but there was one response that really stood out in its depth and
detail.
“Creating something innovative, trippy, fun to watch and relatable. Something that
complements the music and coincides with the beat. Something that flows really well
and expresses a subliminal message that leaves you thinking about the possible
interpretations and the bigger picture.”
I believe that if my music video could live up to this comment then I believe it would be
very creative and modern. Also, I believe that my target audience would find this video
very interesting and it could open them up to a new type of music video.
