2. My group and I decided to create a questionnaire and sent it to the whole sixth form department. It is very
important for us to do audience research as it will give you an insite on what the audience enjoys and
what they look for in a product, whether it's a music video, movie or video game.
Even though we got feedback from our fellow classmate and teacher, we decided to send out the survey
because we wanted to get other peoples opinion on whether the idea for our music video is good or if it's
too cliche. Since we couldn’t decided who our target audience were, doing the survey will allow us to get
an idea of who our target audience will be.
Sending out the questionnaire will benefit the development of our music video as we could gather ideas
from our target audience and other participants so that we could incorporate them into our music video so
that our music video could appeal to them.
Why we decided to do the questionnaire
3. What gender are you?
we asked this question in our questionnaire as we
wanted to know the gender of our main audience
and what gender our music video would appeal to
more. From the survey results you can see that the
majority of the participants are female as the
percentage for them was 76.7% , whereas the male
gender was only 23.3% . This will help us get an
idea of what gender we will have to appeal to more
in our music video and will make it easier for us to
see what they are attracted to more.
4. How old are you?
It was very important for us to ask the age of the
respondents as we wanted to figure out the age
range of our target audience. From the results, we
found out that most of our responses were 17
(46.7%) or 18 (26.7%) years of age. This is because
we sent the email to the sixth form team so we
weren’t expecting to have a lot of responses from
students over the age of 18.
5. What makes a music video attractive?
Asking this question will allow us to see what our
respondents enjoy the most in music videos and
what areas we should focus and perfect more when
developing our music videos so that our target
audience are more attracted to our music video.
From the results, we found out that visuals are what
attract our respondents more to music videos than
other aspects of music videos. This will mean that
we will focus more on our visuals during the filming
and editing of our music video.
6. What is your preferred genre?
We decided to ask this question as we wanted to get
the basic idea of what genre was popular and if other
genres are preferred more than the Indie genre from
our respondents. The majority of our participants
liked the genre Pop, which isn't surprising as most of
our respondents are females and that genre is
usually targeted to that gender. Unfortunately, our
genre was only chosen by 40% of our respondents.
7. What platform do you use to listen/watch/stream music
videos?
We decided to include this question in our opening
sequence to see which platform our respondents
use the most so that we could decide whether the
platform we were releasing our music video would
be suitable for them. 83.3% of our respondents said
that they used Youtube to stream and watch music
videos. This is because the site is easily accessible
by anyone on different convergence device and the
music is free for them to listen to. This is beneficial
for us we will be releasing our music video on
youtube as well.
8. How do you hear about new music videos?
Since part of our A2 portfolio we are asked to a
marketing platform, we decided to include this in our
opening sequence to see what is the best platform to
advertise our artist. The majority of our respondents
said they hear from about music from youtube. We
weren’t surprised from these results as youtube is
one of the biggest social media platform and since
it's easily accessible young teenagers are more
likely to use that site, which is why we are going to
release both our teaser and music video on that
platform. Since every member of our group uses
social media accounts and are familiar with Youtube
we won't have any difficulties with it.
9. What is your preferred style of music video?
We asked this question so that we could see what
type of music videos are audiences enjoyed the
most. 56.7% of our respondents said that they
preferred both a narrative and performance based
music videos. This makes it easier for us to produce
our music video without worrying if it will attract our
target audience as our music video is narrative base
yet still includes a performance.
10. What is your opinion on the alternative/indie genre?
We decided to include this question to see if our
audience whether our audience enjoys the genre or
not. We were pleased to see that 26.7% of our
respondents were fans of the genre, 23.3% liked
some songs within the genre and only 16.7% of the
respondents were not a fan of the genre. This will
make it easier for us to produce the music video
knowing that our majority of our audience like the
genre, which was our initial problem at first as we
thought they would not like the genre.
11. If you were to make a music video using-Coldplay-adventure
of a lifetime, how would you structure it?
We asked this question to see if our respondents had any
good ideas we could consider incorporating into our
music video. However, the question was not effective as
we only received a few good comments and the rest of
the comments were either useless or inappropriate. One
idea which was mentioned by other respondents was
having a guy or group of friends travel around. It would be
very difficult for us to film from different places around the
world. However, we will make sure the places we pick for
the dates are all set at complete different places so that
our audience are more attracted to it.
12. What elements of a music video do you not enjoy?
Finally, we decided to include this to see if they were any
ideas that are included in our opening sequence that our
audience might not like or ideas we would make sure not to
include during the production of our music video. For
example, some of our respondents stated that they do not
enjoying long or boring introductions or introductions
overall in music video. So we will make sure we do not
include an intro as we want our music video to appeal to
them as much as possible. Similar with the previous
question, we also received comments from respondents
that were not helpful, which we will discard.
