The document summarizes audience feedback from participants on a digipack designed by Nicole Harman-Smith and Heidi Nockels. When asked what first attracted them to the digipack, most participants pointed to the front cover design, pink smoke effect, mirrored 'Unhinged' font, and color scheme. When asked what music genre it represented, most said electronic due to its simplicity and font. Participants generally liked the front cover image but some said it was too busy. They enjoyed the simplicity, colors, cover design, and fonts. Areas that could be improved included making the front cover clearer and changing some fonts. Overall, the feedback was positive and showed the designers successfully represented an electronic music style.

The French Revolution, which began in 1789, was a period of radical social and political upheaval in France. It marked the decline of absolute monarchies, the rise of secular and democratic republics, and the eventual rise of Napoleon Bonaparte. This revolutionary period is crucial in understanding the transition from feudalism to modernity in Europe.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

2. WHAT FEATURE MOST ATTRACTS YOU
TOWARDS THIS DIGIPACK?
•
•
•
•
- The front cover design
- The pink smoke effect
- The ‘Unhinged’ mirrored font
- The colour scheme
After presenting our final digipack to the participants we asked what the first feature was
that attracted them towards it. The responses given mostly included features which we
concentrated on the most when working on our digipack. The majority of the participants
answered ‘the front cover design’, this was a positive reaction to our digipack under this
question asked as we wanted to make the front over the most dominant and eye catching
feature. Other comments included ‘the pink smoke effect’, ‘the unhinged mirrored font’
and ‘the colour scheme’. These were also features we concentrated greatly on to make
eye catching and interesting, these responses show that we were successful in doing so.

sic genre would you place this
amount of people
under?
Why?
Genre
Reasons
Electronic - simplistic, individual from other cd’s, font
Pop – colour scheme, pink smoke, font used for track listing
Alternative - front cover image/design, simple back cover
We then asked the participants what
music genre they would place our
digipack under. Seven people
answered ‘electronic’ which is a
positive feedback to our overall
digipack design as it shows we have
followed the forms of conventions of an
electronic digipack design to make
ours recognisable as being under this
genre. Six people answered
‘alternative’ this could be because the
type of electronic digipacks we used
as a guideline such as ‘TEED’ and
‘Flume’ often look as if they could fit
under the alternative genre.
We also asked ‘why?’ to gain abetter
understanding of what it is about the
digipack which made them say this. For those
who gave the answer ‘electronic’ they
answered that the simplicity, font and
individuality made it recognisable as being in
the electronic genre; these are features in
which we wanted to make clear on our
digipack as they are forms and conventions
within the electronic digipack designs.
4. WHAT ARE YOUR OPINIONS ON THE
FRONT COVER IMAGE?
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
- Interesting
- Too busy
- Unique
- professional looking
- links well with magazine/ video
- confusing
- well thought out
- well designed
- well made
We wanted to find out what the participants
thought of individual features on our digipack. We
particularly wanted to seek opinions on the front
cover image from people within our target
audience.
When asked, participants mostly gave us positive
feedback some opinions included that our front
cover image was interesting, well thought out, well
made and well designed. A few participants also
said it was professional looking and linked well to
our magazine ad and music video. We wanted to
make our digipack as realistic and professional
looking as possible by following forms and
conventions of existing and successful digipack
albums. We also wanted to make a clear link
between our products and from this feedback it is
clear that we have managed to achieve this.
Negative feedback included that the front cover
image was too busy and confusing.
5. WHAT DO YOU MOST LIKE ABOUT THE
DIGIPACK AS A WHOLE?
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
- The simplicity
- The simple colours
- The cover
- The unique cover design
- The image on back of digipack
- The choice of font
- The disk design
- The fact that it is intriguing
We asked the participants what they
most liked about our digipack as a
whole. Simplicity was a frequent answer
as well as the simple colours used. We
wanted to keep the colour scheme
subtle and limited as we found from our
research on existing digipacks that this
was a typical feature used on digipack
designs. The choice of font was another
feature that participants liked about the
digipack as a whole; we used the same
fonts on both our magazine ad and
digipack to keep a clear theme. We
also wanted to make the font
individually recognisable to ‘Unhinged’
as we found that artists such as ‘Nero’
and ‘deadmau5’ use the same font to
present their name on all media
platforms. Other features that the
participants mentioned thay they most
liked about our digipack was the
cover, disk design and back cover
image.
6. WHAT DO YOU DISLIKE?
• - The font on disk
• - The font used for track listing on back
• - The front cover image isn’t clear
We then asked the participants what
they disliked about our album. We did
this to learn what people within our
target audience didn’t find attractive
about our digipack. The answers mostly
revolved around the choice of font
used on some places of the digipack
for example the track listings and disk.
This could be because we didn’t use
typical or conventional font often seen
on digipack track listings and disks.
They also mentioned that the front
cover image was not very clear at first
glance.
7. WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT THE
SIMPLICITY OF THE CD DISK?
• - Adds to the good overall
• design
• - Creates a sense of curiosity
• - Makes you want to listen to
find out more
about the type of sound the
album is and the artist
• - Not that interesting
For our next question we asked the
participants ‘ what do you think about the
simplicity of the cd disk?’. This was one of
the features about the digipack that we
wanted to make simplistic, we made this
decision after our research into existing
electronic cd disks and finding that most
simply just have the album name on.
The participants mostly gave positive
feedback saying that the simplicity adds to
the curiosity and mystery of the album and
makes you want to listen to find out more
about the artist. However some participates
stated that it wasn’t interesting enough for
a cd design.
8. DO YOU THINK THAT THE OVERALL
DESIGN IS PROFESSIONAL ENOUGH
AND OF HIGH QUALITY?
Do you think that
the overall design
is professional
enough and of
high quality?
yes
no
As making our digipack design
looking as professional and high
quality as we could was important to
us when making our digipack, within
our target audience thought.
Everyone that we asked answered
‘yes’ in thinking that our digipack was
professional looking and of high
quality. This positive feedback shows
we were successful in making sure we
achieved this with our final digipack
design.
9. WOULD YOU PURCHASE THIS
ALBUM?
Would you purchase
this album?
yes
no
We then asked
participants if they would
purchase this album as
they are within our target
market and audience.
Ten people answered
‘yes’ while the remainder
of five answered ‘no’
they wouldn’t purchase
this album. This could be
because the digipack
did not appeal to them
or they do not like
electronic/dance music.
The majority
, however, answered
‘yes’. This therefore shows
we have made a
successful digipack
which would sell in stores.
10. DO YOU LIKE THE CONTRAST OF
HAVING A BUSY FRONT COVER AND A
SIMPLE BACK COVER?
Do you like the contrast of having a busy front cover
with a simple back cover?
15
10
5
0
yes
no
We asked if the participants liked the
contrast of having a busy front cover
and a simple back cover as we felt
this made our overall digipack design
more professional looking and closer
to existing electronic/dance
digipacks.
All fifteen participants answered ‘yes’
therefore agreeing that they like the
contrast of the two covers. This
therefore shows that by following the
forms and conventions of existing
digipacks we managed to get the
balance right with the busy front
cover by keeping the back cover
simplistic.
11. DO YOU THINK THAT THE ARTIST NAME TYPOGRAPHY
'UNHINGED' IS UNIQUE ENOUGH TO STAND OUT
AGAINST OTHER ARTISTS AND BECOME THEIR
SIGNATURE STYLE?
Do you think that the artist name typography 'Unhinged' is

We wanted to chose a font for the
typography ‘Unhinged’ to be their
signature style and also to stand out
against other artists. After our research
on existing electronic and dance
digipacks we found that artists and
DJ’s conventionally choose a certain
font to present their name on their
digipacks as well as across all other
media platforms. Therefore, making
this their signature typography and
individually and instantly recognisable
to them. This also helps them to stand
out in the industry against other artists
and DJ’s.
Fourteen people answered
‘yes’, agreeing that the font we chose
to use for the typography ‘Unhinged’ is
unique enough to stand out and
become their recognisable signature
style.
12. WHAT IMPROVEMENTS WOULD YOU
MAKE?
• - Make the front cover clearer
• - Change the font for the track
listing on the back cover
• - Change the font on the disk
• - Make the image on the disk
clearer
• - Make the colours slightly
brighter and more enhanced
Finally, we asked participants what
improvements they would make after
reviewing our digipack. Most the comments
were made about some of the font choices
made, such as on the track listing and the disk
suggesting that we could choose a font more
fitting the our choice of music genre. Here
perhaps, we did not follow the forms and
conventions of existing electronic digipacks as
closely as other aspects on our digipacks.
Other comments included making the front
cover image clearer and making the colours
slightly more enhanced and brighter. These
comments are not too critical however making
these changes could make a big difference to
the final version of our digipack and make it
more appealing to our target audience.
