Audience Wants and
Needs Feedback Analysis
Audience Feedback
1) Do you watch soap operas?
Why? Why not?
From asking this question in our
questionnaire I now know that the
majority of the people we asked
enjoy watching soaps. They
additionally have stated that they
enjoy soaps because they have free
time and find them entertaining.
When it comes to producing our
own soap, we will need to ensure
that the soap will be shown at an
appropriate time where are target
audience don’t have anything else
to do. A good time for this will be
after 6 o’clock when most people
are home from work and school.
Audience Feedback
2) What is your favourite soap and
why?
From analysing my results Eastenders is
the clear winner out of all already
existing soaps. Therefore it is likely that
Eastenders will be our main competitor
as our target audience appear to find
Eastenders exciting and entertaining.
Before we produce our trailer, we need
to make sure we research into
Eastenders thoroughly so we are sure of
what attracts our target audience. This
will help us when incorporating some of
this into our own production.
Audience Feedback
3) What storylines interest
you
most? Why? Examples.
Most people within our
target audience said that the
storylines that most interest
them are dramatic and
involve some element of
mystery e.g. ‘Who dunnit’
and Murder.
Traditional conventions such
as drugs, pregnancy and love
were additionally suggested
and therefore we will try to
include some of these in our
own production.
Audience Feedback
4) How often do you watch soaps?
The majority of people asked stated
that they watch soaps every other
day. We will take this into
consideration when we produce our
own text as we want to create a soap
that fits the wants and needs of our
target audience.
Thinking about when we will show
our soap; I think we may show it
either: Monday, Wednesday and
Friday or Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
and Friday (especially as our TA
obviously weren’t put off by the
showing of Eastenders).
Audience Feedback
5) What do you want to see in a trailer?
Most of our audience have said that
they want to see drama, cliff-hangers
and a range of different narratives.
When producing my own soap opera
these aspects will be analysed and we
will try to include as many of them as
possible to make our soap opera
appealing to our target audience.
Audience Feedback
6) Do you like fast paced, action packed
Trailers or slow, suspense building trailers?
7/9 responses from our audience suggested
that fast paced action packed trailer would
be preferable. When we make our soap
opera trailer I intend to include these
aspects as they obviously appeal to our
target audience and therefore our product
is likely to be successful.
An example of how we could do this is
possible choosing a soundtrack with a fast
chorus. From here we could then crop
footage and edit it together so it flicks over
many different storylines.
Audience Feedback
7) what do you dislike about trailers?
The majority of our audience have said
that they can be boring and slow. In
order to make sure our trailer isn’t like
this we will try to use fast pace editing
and a variation of characters in order to
keep the audience entertained.
Additionally we will ensure we include
days and times at the end of the trailer
so the audience know when the soap is
on.
Audience Feedback
8) What would you like to see in a new
soap?
The audience feedback that we
received from this question was very
mixed for example someone suggested
that we produced a soap aimed at a
younger target audience. This is a good
idea as this is an audience that has not
been specifically penetrated up until
now. Additionally the comment of ‘a
balance between dark and light
hearted story lines' was an interesting
opinion and relevant to the production
of our text as we need to be original
and by doing this we may achieve.
Audience Feedback
9) When would be the best
time of day and day of the
week to broadcast our soap?
Most people have suggested
that we show our soap at
some point in between 7 and
9 as not to disrupt and social
plans and works around
dinner time.
Additionally it has been
suggested that the soap
should be shown weekdays
daily and not on the weekend.
Audience Feedback
10) Do you like soaps that concentrate on
negative drama or resolution?
6/9 respondents have said that they like the
aspects of negative drama involved in already
existing soaps, one person said both, one
person wasn’t sure and the last person
preferred resolution. As we are not making the
whole soap resolution may be hard to display
without foreshadowing the storyline too much.
However I do like the idea of combining both
concepts e.g. Negative drama with a happy
ending.
