3. What have you learned from your audience feedback?

To ensure my product portrayed the codes and conventions of melodrama, I wanted to
do some research into existing products. Doing this allowed me to look at other products
and create a research chart for myself of the typical codes and conventions featured in
melodrama. I created a survey on survey monkey and here are the results
Q1

These are the results for the first question in our audience research
survey. It allows us to see which channel is watched the most among
our targeted audience so that we know which channel our soap will
air on. 57.14% of the audience watched E4 the most out of the
options available, whereas only 28.57% watch BBC and Channel 4
and nobody watched ITV2 therefore our soap should be aired on E4.

Q2

The results for this question show us that the majority of
the audience would prefer a girl character to be named
Ruby, 37.5% of the audience would like a girl character to
be named Cassie and none of the audience would like a
character to be named Teresa or Michelle. This means we
will name the main female characters Ruby and Cassie.
3
Q3

Q4

The results of this question show us that the most popular name
was James which 50% of the audience agreed on. The second most
preferred name was George with 30% of the audience voted for it.
Both Ste and Jack received 10% of the votes. Therefore, the main
male characters should be called James and George, and other
male characters could be called Ste and Jack.

The results for this question show that 40% the audience would
prefer the programme to be aired once a week and 30% would
like it to be aired twice a week. As the results are this close it
would have helped to get more survey responses. However, the
programme should be aired once a week.
3
Q5

Q6

The results to this question shows us that a clear majority of the
audience would prefer the show to be broadcast at 9-10pm at night so
this is what time the programme should be broadcast.

These results show that a large majority of the audience prefer
Skins to any other soap listed. As Skins is a melodrama based
on a group of students at sixth form college it means that we
should make our soap centred around students also, with lots
of it filmed in and around college. Hollyoaks and Shameless
both received 18.18% of the votes and as they are both
melodramas it assures us that our soap should also be
melodrama. The only realism soap listed, Coronation
Street, received no votes.
3
Q7

These results show that the majority of the
audience would prefer the series to be filmed
in the city centre. As our soap will be based on
college students we could not film all of it in
the city centre. However, some of the
storylines may be able to take place in the city
centre.

This form of audience feed
back helped us by giving us a
way to start planning our
product. By using this
particular feedback we were
able to see what channel the
audience thought was better
to watch our product on.
Names they thought were
suitable to conform to
everyday life, male and
female. We learnt how often
the want to watch the
programme and what time
they’d prefer it broadcasted.
This questionnaire gave us the
most insight on our audience
so we were able to tap into
their mind set as well as
create a soap they wanted to
watch.
3
After creating a first daft of the trailer for leavers we asked a group of people to watch our
trailer and gives us feed back, we took pictures of the feed back and here are the feedback
comments...

From this persons feed back we were given good marks out of ten on each question which gave us a
good idea on the sequencing, which we were unsure of, how the shot were framed we had liked that
we have a diversity of shot types, editing although we ended up changing the editing overall we knew
that the audience liked the order the clips were in and the Audio in the back of the clips which we
also ended up changing. From the constructive criticism we learnt that we needed to add a
soundtrack to play whilst the characters are speaking but quietly to add interest, this is something we
took on board and added in to our trailer.
3

Here the overall marks given were similar to the last, impressed with the marks we were
given we looked to what the feedback giver wrote, we learnt that some editing parts were
faster this meant that when we next edited our trailer we need to slow down our edits in
the trailer. There was a lack of text which the audience would like to see, when then added
a lot more text to the trailer and it is now one of the main conventions.
3

What we changed, kept the same, challenged and why?
What we changed…
After receiving the feedback from our first draft we added a lot more titles into the trailer, now in the
final edit of the trailer titles are a main convention and they help tell the stories in the story line. We
also changed the music and made it ruin fluidly all the way through so you could here the dialogue
and entertained the audience in parts were there wasn't any.

What we kept the same…
We kept the order of the edits in the same place, we liked the way the editing was.. The speed,
where certain clips were and how long they lasted for, we thought that this made our trailer look
more effective so in the end we kept them the same.

What we challenged…
None of the criticism in the feedback we got was harsh, this meant we didn't have to change much
there for not really challenging the criticism given to us however some feed back was taken on
board and we did make little changes to our trailer that we are now happier with. Adding the titles in
was the biggest change we made and in our research we found titles hook the audience in and give
them a reason to watch the show that is being advertised, this is something we wanted to capture in
our trailer.
