My students are Russian and range in age from 10 to 19. They have varying degrees of vision impairment. I will teach them about Independence Day in the United States over two days. On the first day, students will share about celebrations in Russia and listen to a podcast about Independence Day history. They will participate in an oral discussion. The second day involves an indoor cookout with traditional foods to experience Fourth of July activities through their senses alongside teacher explanation. Students will be required to participate in discussions and activities to evaluate their understanding.

1. ASSURE
Analyze Learners
My 15 students are Russian, and their age range is from 10 to 19. All students
are vision impaired. These students may have limited to no knowledge on the fourth
of July and it’s activities.
State Objectives
Before explaining to my students what the fourth of July is for the students of
the United States, I will ask them to describe a celebration that they each enjoy in
Russia, and why it’s important to their country. 100%
My students will participate in an oral examination and discussion after
listening to an exciting audio presentation including music and sound effects about
the history of the Fourth of July in one day with 85% accuracy.
My students will describe Fourth of July activities by experiencing the
sounds, smells, tastes, and textures of a traditional cookout accompanied by teacher
explanation by the end of two days with 85% accuracy.
Select Methods, Materials, and Media
The students will have access to computers and with assistance, will find
songs, pictures, soundbites, or anything other media that helps them describe their
favorite holiday’s or celebrations in Russia.
A podcast designed to be a narrative about the Fourth of July will be found.
The podcast should be brief, exciting, and not too busy. It shall be previewed before
being shown. I will also need a few pairs of headsets to provide if any student would
ask to listen alone. Cushions will also be need for anyone who would want to sit on
the floor and listen.
I will need help from the cooks of the school in preparing a few key dishes for
a traditional Fourth of July cookout. A few of those would include hamburgers, fries,
baked beans, watermelon, apple pie, and ice cream. Some drinks would include
sweet tea, water, and Root beer. Also, the students will have the chance to bob for
apples if they so wish. Other activities involve listening to fireworks, having a
“firework” painted on their faces, and making maracas (toilet paper rolls with a little
sand and a few beans in them, secured on both ends to make a sizzling sound like
the fireworks). These activities will of course require assistance.
Utilize Media and Materials
The students that are unfamiliar with computers will have a chance to learn
how to use the basic parts of the machine with help. This will also help them
2. practice their English speaking skills, while also getting one-on-one attention from
the teacher.
When presenting the podcast, I shall have the students seated comfortably either in
their desks or on a rug with cushions (their choice). There will also be an option of
listening to the podcast on their own- with a headset at a computer if they so wish.
The indoor cookout will be a hands-on learning activity while seeming to be
just a cook out. Students will be given different things to taste, have different
textures, and will have the opportunity play a few games and participate in a few
activities. The cook out will be their lunch.
Require Student Participation
The students will be asked to first volunteer to share their choice of
celebration or holiday, and then will be picked. The student’s who don’t get to share
will be asked to turn in their materials to be shared anonymously with the class
anyway.
After the audio presentation, students will be required to ask any questions
they have, and possibly give examples of similar events they know of or have
experienced. They will also be given the opportunity to suggest other ways they feel
they would celebrate independence.
During the indoor cookout, my students will be required to have fun. While
taking in the celebration, of course, they will be asked to take mental notes of
activities they enjoyed and questions they may have. After the conclusion of the
cookout, my students will each share what they enjoyed about the cook out, and
what they believe to be most important about America gaining independence from
Britain. They will also be required to discuss the podcast from the day before, again,
and the events that led to said independence.
Evaluate and Revise
Evaluate: My students will be observed over the course of the two days on
their interest, involvement, and retention and understanding during the discussions.
I will also learn more about them as individuals with their first project, and get to
know the way they communicate. I will also learn about Russian culture and history
in the process.
Revise: As I watch my students, I may make changes due to their interest
level or retention/understanding through out the lesson. The first project will help
me better observe them as I will become more aware of where they come from, and
how they view certain things.
