This document provides details about a 7th grade English class lesson plan. The class has 16 students with various needs and abilities. The objectives are for students to expand their understanding of genre and writing style by discussing a digitally altered photo and presenting their book poster project ideas on a class chat app. Materials include a photo on screen, poster sketches, and the chat app that students already use. During the lesson, the photo will be discussed, sketches created and peer reviewed, and students will present their poster ideas on the app at assigned times. Participation will be encouraged from all students. The teacher will evaluate understanding through the discussions and presentations. If most students seem confused, the teacher may replace a planned lecture with an interactive "inter
1. ASSURE (Tuesday)
Analyze Learners
My classroom is a private school 7th grade English class. There are 16 students: 9 boys
and 7 girls; 2 girls with vision impairments; 3 students (2 boys and 1 girl) have ADD; 1
student has an IEP; and 1 student has Asperger’s.
State Objectives
The students will expand their understanding of genre and writing style by discussing and
relating the two topics to a digitally altered photo with 80% accuracy.
The students will have picked their book for the poster project and will bounce ideas off
of their peers on the class Zello account (Genre & Writing Style) with 100% participation
unless explicitly excused by me.
Select Methods, Materials, and Media
Students will view a photo on screen and will openly discuss it with the teacher and class.
Students will draw a sketch of their poster in class and have it peer reviewed.
All the students will have already made a Zello account earlier in the year, and will have
used it many times.
Utilize Media and Materials
The photo on screen will be discussed and there will be questions that provoke the
student’s thought process on determining it’s genre and possible writing style.
The sketch will act as a guide to the student for the next day when they begin their poster.
Students will have an assigned time they get on Zello that afternoon to “present” their
idea for their poster.
Require Student Participation
Students are always encouraged to give feedback in class, or jot down their
feedback and give it to me. I will ask the students who are usually not engaged in turn so
they still get involved.
This poster proposal requires that the students say their name, the book they’ve
chosen, it’s genre and writing style, and what they have planned for the poster design.
Evaluate and Revise
Evaluate: Through the in class discussions, brainstorming and sketching time, and
Zello presentations, I’ll be able to see in real time what they’re understanding of
genre and writing style are.
2. Revise: If at this point, my students are struggling to understand this topic as a
majority, I will reconsider a lecture. Rather than a lecture, I may set up an
“interview” on genre and writing style. This would take the pressure off of students
who really want to ask, but are too shy.
-Interview: Teacher sits at the front of the room with a fake microphone, while
students (the paparazzi) ask their well-formed questions. Students will be
encouraged to have good questions that get the most information out of the teacher.
This replaces a typical lecture, or could follow one.
