The students are visually impaired students from Russia who speak English fluently. The lesson aims to teach them about how Americans celebrate Independence Day through listening to patriotic music, reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, and experiencing small fireworks and common foods. The teacher will use an internet connection to play patriotic songs on YouTube and provide samples of typical July 4th foods for the students to experience tactilely, auditorily, and through smell. The lesson is designed to be completed in three days with high accuracy.
1. A – Analyze Learners
The students for today’s instruction are from Russia. The entire student population are
visually impaired therefore all visual aids are not to be used. These students do speak
English fluently so they have clearly had a well-developed educational background and
are exceptionally students. Not only are they good students by being at the very least
bilingual, but they are being sent to America by either their school or some program that
would require them to be on an average learning ability. With them being taught English
they may have some rudimentary knowledge of American culture as well.
S- State Objectives
The students will develop the knowledge as to what is done to celebrate the American
Independence Day and why some of these actions are performed by listening to a few
select music performances, mimic the Pledge of Allegiance, with verbal instruction,
hands on experiences with small fireworks such as sparklers and some common foods
to elicit tactile, auditory, olfactory, and (in some students that have partial sight) a visual
stimulus with 99.999999…% accuracy in three days’ time.
S- Select Methods, Media, and Materials
1. Methods:
2. Media: a simple internet connection and any internet explorer can pull up
YouTube that has many of the songs available.
3. Materials: If the internet is down or complications arise the school music teacher
is highly likely to have the music scores in question. Iconic food stuffs of a typical
4th of July celebration. Sparklers and Bang snaps (small popping sounds when
thrown at the ground and can be squashed in the hand with no injury)
U- Utilize Media and Materials
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbxgYlcNxE8 1812 Overture, Pyotr Tchaikovsky
had written this to commemorate the Russian defense against Napoleon. So it makes it
a great fit for America declaring its independence from England. With the cannon fire it
make it more appropo.
As for the food of the celebration a few things that can be used are hamburgers,
barbecue, potato salad, apple pie, lemonade, sweet tea, watermelon, corn on the cob,
and baked beans.
Russia day is similarly celebrated the same as American Independence Day.
