Book Formatting: Quality Control Checks for DesignersConfidence Ago
This presentation was made to help designers who work in publishing houses or format books for printing ensure quality.
Quality control is vital to every industry. This is why every department in a company need create a method they use in ensuring quality. This, perhaps, will not only improve the quality of products and bring errors to the barest minimum, but take it to a near perfect finish.
It is beyond a moot point that a good book will somewhat be judged by its cover, but the content of the book remains king. No matter how beautiful the cover, if the quality of writing or presentation is off, that will be a reason for readers not to come back to the book or recommend it.
So, this presentation points designers to some important things that may be missed by an editor that they could eventually discover and call the attention of the editor.

3. Definition of Retails
What is Retail ?
- Retail involves the sale of goods from a single point (malls, markets,
department stores etc.) directly to the consumer in small quantities for his end
use.
- In a layman’s language, retailing is nothing but transaction of goods between the
seller and the end user as a single unit (piece) or in small quantities to satisfy the
needs of the individual and for his direct consumption.
few USEFUL terminologies related to the RETAIL DEFINITION:
Manufacturers ........................ Retailers ................ End User
(Consumer)
Wholesalers
- Manufacturers - Manufacturers are the ones who are involved in production of
goods with the help of machines, labor and raw materials.
- Wholesaler - The wholesaler is the one who purchases the goods from the
manufacturers and sells to the retailers in large numbers but at a lower price. A
wholesaler never sells goods directly to the end users.
- Retailer - A retailer comes at the end of the supply chain who sells the products in
small quantities to the end users as per their requirement and need.
- The end user goes to the retailer to buy the goods (products) in small

My research will show the points which are general to all retail types and the
points which Distinguish retail types.
8. Retail Layout types
KINDS OF SPACE: ( IN GENERAL)
- A typical layout divides a store into four different kinds of space:
1- Selling space – assigned for interior displays, product demonstrations, and
sales transactions.
2- Merchandising space – allocated to items that are kept in inventory for
selling.
3- Personnel space –assigned to store employees for lockers, lunch breaks,
and restrooms.
4- Customer space – assigned for the comfort and convenience of the
customer, including a café or food court, dressing rooms, lounges, and
recreation areas for children.
9. Retail Layout types
1- Straight Floor Plan:
- The straight floor plan is an excellent store layout for
most any type of retail store.
- The straight floor plan makes optimum use of the walls, and
utilizes the space in the most judicious manner.
- The straight floor plan creates spaces within the retail store for
the customers to move and shop freely. It is one of the
commonly implemented store designs.
- There are two main reasons which endorse the straight
floor plan:
1- It is one of the most efficient and economical
options:
- With all the fixtures/displays at right angles, a straight floor
plan makes the most efficient use of both floor and wall space.
Even commonly unused areas, like corners, can be used for
displays/shelving.
- Many small businesses only have a small amount of actual
floor space, This is why wall fixtures/displays can be so
10. Retail Layout types
2- Diagonal Floor Plan:
- The diagonal floor plan is a good store layout for self-
service types of retail stores.
- According to the diagonal floor plan, the shelves or racks are
kept diagonal to each other for the owner or the store
manager to have a watch on the customers.
- Diagonal floor plan works well in stores where customers
have the liberty to walk in and pick up merchandise on
their own.
There are two main reasons which endorse the straight floor plan:
2- It is highly customizable and can accommodate a wide variety of store
types and aisle layouts:
- Straight floor plans are also extremely versatile. They accommodate all of the
major display styles (gondola, wire, slat wall) and can be used in a wide variety
of stores, from convenience stores to high-end retailers.
11. Retail Layout types
3- Angular Floor Plan:
- The fixtures and walls are given a curved look to add to the
style of the store.
- Angular floor plan gives a more sophisticated look to the store.
Such layouts are often seen in high end stores like
jewelry stores.
3- Geometric Floor Plan:
- The geometric floor plan is a suitable store design for
clothing and apparel shops.
- The racks and fixtures are given a geometric shape in such a
floor plan.
- The geometric floor plan gives a trendy and unique look
to the store.
4- Mixed Floor Plan:
- The mixed floor plan takes into consideration angular, diagonal
and straight layout to give rise to the most functional store
lay out.
13. Retail Lighting
(In General)
- The retail environment is lit predominantly artificially.
- Natural daylight is evident through the facade but does not always reach
into the depth of the store.
- Also, natural daylight changes throughout the day in terms of its direction
and intensity and is affected by the seasons.
- Artificial lighting is not subject to these changing conditions and can be
controlled in a way that natural lighting cannot.
- Use of light: Lighting is used to entice the customer into the store and
pinpoints the products on display.
- Artificial lighting has improved significantly since the light bulb was
designed and most people are now conscious of the impact that it has on
energy consumption (lighting currently accounts for 40 per cent of energy
consumption of non-residential
buildings).
14. Retail Lighting
(In General)
- New lamp technology has given lighting energy-saving efficiency, with
LEDs, new CDM-T lamps and fluorescent fittings now in widespread
use.
- The brightness of artificial lighting is measured in Lux. The brighter the
light source, the less energy efficient it becomes.
- The retail designer works closely with a lighting designer to create the
desired effect for the branded interior.
- A reflected ceiling plan is drawn to indicate the positioning of light fittings in
relation to the displays, products and services. This drawing is really
important in terms of setting out the interior space and will contain a key that
identifies all of the light fittings as symbols plotted on to the drawing.
- Fixtures and fittings are often shown in a dotted line or in a grey or fine
line so that the fitting can be lined up correctly with what is happening
below.
- Ceiling features and rafts will also be indicated.
- Lux :The unit by which the brightness of light is measured.
15. (Principles of lighting):
- There are usually three different layers of light.
- 1- accent lighting, which highlights the product and is the brightest
element in the store.
- 2- task lighting, which is present in the service areas such as the cash
desks, fitting rooms or consultation spaces and is not as bright as the
accent lighting.
- 3- ambient lighting, which guides the customer around the walkways
and does not impact on the lighting of the product or services.
Retail Lighting
16. Retail Lighting
(Accent lighting):
- The shop window plays with the contrast of
daylight and artificial light.
- As the time or season changes, daylight
fades and gives way to the artificial
illumination.
- Once inside the store, the accent lighting is
focused on the product using a variety of
fittings and techniques.
- Down lighters in the ceiling wash walls
and mid-floor fixtures, and lighting glows
internally from LEDs in cabinets, creating
light boxes behind signage.
A central raft that runs through the length of the
store enhances the ceiling. The detail shows that
fluorescent light fittings are hidden around the
perimeter of the raft to give an even glow.
17. Retail Lighting
(Task and feature lighting):
- The task lighting illuminates
cash desks, fitting rooms,
seated areas and consultation
spaces.
- The lighting level is dropped
slightly so that it does not
interfere with the accent lighting,
but is bright enough for the
customer and staff to see what
they are doing.
- The task lighting may be in the
form of a feature light; a
pendant or chandelier to
highlight the activity below.
This feature lighting runs around the perimeter of the
wall and acts as accent lighting, illuminating the products
below.
18. Retail Lighting
(Ambient lighting):
- The ambient lighting’s task is to highlight
walkways and give a general glow to the
space that does not encroach on the
accent or task lighting.
- The lighting over walkways may be
recessed into the ceiling or a row of
equally spaced pendants.
- Often the ambient lighting is
incorporated into a ceiling feature, such
as a lighting trough, for instance.
This design incorporates a recessed
ceiling trough with feature lighting.
19. Retail Lighting
(Light fittings):
1- CDM (CERAMIC DICHARGE METAL HALIDE):
- This light fitting is incredibly bright and is used in
window displays and to wash walls filled with products.
2- LED (LIGHT EMITTING DIODE):
- Suitable for cabinet lighting and sometimes used as
ambient floor lighting, this fitting has a very low heat
emission and is energy efficient.
- The fitting is made up of a series of small bulbs that are
very long lasting and can come in a variety of colors.
3- LOW-VOLTAGE DOWNLIGHTERS:
- Low-voltage fittings are used in recessed down
lighters.
- They are used either independently or as
secondary lighting for products and can also be
used to wash the interior with ambient light.
20. Retail Lighting
(Light fittings):
4- FLUORESCENT:
- These fittings are very versatile and come in a range of lengths between
300mm and 1500mm long.
- They can also be circular and come small enough to fit inside cabinets.
- They can be positioned behind ceiling rafts or wall pelmets, overlapping each
other for an even glow of ambient light, or using in back-of house areas as
they are inexpensive and efficient.
- They have an average
- lifespan of 12,000 – 20,000 hours.
5- TRACK LIGHTING:
- This is often used when there is little or no ceiling void available to recess a
light fitting.
- They are not the most attractive form of lighting, but are efficient in certain
circumstances
- They come in a range of contemporary styles.
22. Retail Material
(In General)
- Hundreds of materials are available for use in the retail environment. Some are
innovative whilst others are commonly found in every space.
- The materials or sample board is first produced as part of the concept design
and is discussed with the client.
- For every design project the material specification is formulated as part of
the design scheme.
- The specification provides a detailed document of every material, the supplier
and cost, as well as its ecological status.
- Some materials have structural qualities that are used in the construction
stage of the interior.
- Some materials lend themselves to creating the interior look through the
fixtures and finishes.
23. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
1- Timber:
- Timber is a versatile material that comes in a range of
shades depending on the timber selected.
- It can be used as an interior wall cladding, for fixture
and furniture construction or as a floor finish.
- Advantage of use: It has warmth and is full of
imperfections, which can add character to a space.
- Has Three Types:
- 1- Softwoods, mainly pine, are most commonly used
for timber framed fixture carcasses, with an outer
skin applied for finishing.
- 2- Hard woods such as oak, ash, beech, walnut,
cherry and maple are more commonly used for
flooring.
- 3- The use of MDF and chipboard is mainstream in
many retail environments.
24. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
2- Steel:
- Used types: Stainless steel, aluminum and powder-
coated mild steel are commonly used in the retail
environment.
- Uses: Steel can be used structurally, in a shop front
as a glazing frame, as part of the fixture and
furniture design, as system upright posts between
wall bays, as a decorative cladding to walls or as
part of the signage construction.
25. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
3- Glass:
- Glass is incredibly diverse and structurally strong.
- The retail customer’s first experience of the interior
and product is through the glazed shop front
window. This glass
- is laminated (layered bonded glass) for strength and
safety.
- Uses: Glass is used for shelving, cabinet displays
and sometimes screens.
- Glass can be colored using a gel, textured or
frosted.
- And also it can be recycled.
26. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
4- Laminate:
- Laminates are constructed by layering and fusing Kraft
or printed papers and resins, with a decorative layer on
top, coated in melamine.
- Uses:
- 1-They are hardwearing and often used as surfaces
for counters, wall and door finishes as well as floor
finishes mimicking timber.
- 2- Laminates can be decorative and can be used in
innovative ways to create feature walls and displays.
- Advantage of use: They are easy to clean and are
durable.
27. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
5- Vinyl and rubber:
- Vinyl flooring comes in sheet form or tiles in a variety
of colors and finishes.
- It is used in sheet form mainly in the back of house
area of the store and ancillary areas, as it is relatively
cheap and hardwearing.
- Vinyl tiles are available in a range of finishes and
can imitate timber or stone.
- Rubber, like vinyl, comes in sheet and tile formats
but can be expensive.
- It comes in a range of exciting colors and, when
sealed, can be water resistant.
28. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
6- Textiles:
- Different types of textiles are used widely in retail
design, from upholstery and fitting room curtains to
carpets
- Sometimes, the retail designer will work with an
upholsterer to custom-clad pieces of furniture.
- Leather and specialist upholstery fabric are most
commonly used.
- Carpets are sometimes specified for retail
environments and can be produced to a specific
design or pattern. They
- come in a variety of finishes, either in man-made or
natural fibers.
- Carpets tend to wear out quickly with heavy traffic
and need replacing on a regular basis.
29. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
7- Concrete, terrazzo, quartz:
- Uses: These hard-wearing materials are used
predominantly for floor finishes, but sometimes as a
wall cladding.
- Concrete can be polished to give it sheen, colored
with a pigment or molded to a form of texture,
making it very versatile.
- Concrete, once refined into terrazzo, can be mixed
with
aggregates such as marble or granite o create a
conglomerate, which means that different stones are
mixed together.
- Some conglomerates have quartz added for sparkle
- Concrete can be ground down and recycled but this
process creates harmful emissions.
30. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
8- Stone, slate and marble:
- Uses: These are traditional, natural materials that
can be mixed with concrete to create a
conglomerate, or used on their own for flooring,
cladding or surface finish.
- They are hard wearing and have longevity. Each
piece will have its own natural flaws.
- It is important to mention that some stones such as
limestone and sandstone can be very porous and
stain easily.
- Vast amounts of water can be used when quarrying,
cutting and polishing the stone, which wastes valuable
resources.
31. Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
9- Ceramic:
- Ceramic tiles are hardwearing and a cost-effective
choice.
- They come in a variety of finishes and often mimic
the look of real stone.
- Uses: They can be used on the floor, walls or as a
mosaic pattern, and are waterproof.
- The finish can be matt or gloss.

Retail Material
The used material in the retails environment In
General:
10- Paints and wallpapers:
- Walls and ceilings are clad in a specific material,
painted or wallpapered.
- A cladding can easily be from a reclaimed material.
- Some paints are kinder to the environment in terms
of their production and emissions and wallpapers
can be made from recycled paper and patterned or
textured in a range of ways.
- Wallpaper is once again fashionable and is now
widely used both commercially and residentially.

Retail Color
(In General)
Can influence behavior:
- Warm colors increase blood pressure, respiratory rate and other
physiological responses – attract customers and gain attention but can also
be distracting.
- Cool colors are relaxing, peaceful, calm and pleasant – effective for
retailers selling anxiety-causing products.
- There are two uses of color in store décor: the Primary Color (neutrals)
and Secondary Colors (bold accent colors).
- The primary color should be 80 percent of your store’s décor; its job is to
create a relaxed atmosphere for customers to shop. Your accent Color(s)
take up the remaining 20 percent of your décor.
- You can go with a Monochromatic Color Scheme – the use of a single color
in varying shades or a Complimentary Color Scheme – creating a color
contrast by selecting colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel.
36. Role Of Technology
here are a few examples of how retailers are using interactive mirrors, video, and
touchscreens to enhance the in-store experience for shoppers. With showing the
name of the shop which apply these technological way in attracting visitors.
Burberry
1- Burberry's flagship London store aims
to bring some of the web experience to the
high street, featuring mirrors that double
as video screens and staff armed with
iPads.
2- Other clever tricks include the use of
radio-frequency identification technology
(RFID), which triggers related catwalk
footage when some products are taken
into a fitting room, or near a video screen.
- A mixture of the practical and
experiential.
37. Role Of Technology
Tommy Hilfiger
- This is an old one (from 2008) but still a good
idea which could be developed for window
shopping.
- This campaign encouraged shoppers to leave
their images for use in a collage of images
being shown in shop windows.
Nordstrom
1- Nordstrom uses mobile POS devices in its
stores to enable staff to check out customers
anywhere in its stores, and cut the queues down
.
2- The New Balance iPad app is deisgned to help
customers and sales assistants in store, allowing
them to access the product catalogue, check
stock, and help with sizing issues.

Tesco
1- Tesco has trialled touchscreen kiosks in
several stores. These allow for stock checking
and ordering.
2- The retailer has also used interactive mirrors
which allow users to try clothes on 'virtually'
using a gesture based interface.
40. Jeweler shop Function
- A jewelry store is a retail establishment selling bodily
adornments, usually with precious stones or metals.
- It normally sells watches, rings, necklaces, earrings,
bracelets, amulets, pins, and other items.
- Although precious jeweler is the more common association
with such a store, it may also sell handmade or mass
produced jewelry of low value.
- a firm that sells and buys jewelry.
41. Jeweler shop Layout
Angular Floor Plan:
- The fixtures and walls are given a curved look to add to the style of
the store.
- Angular floor plan gives a more sophisticated look to the store. Such

44. Jeweler shop Circulation
2- A free-flow layout: most often used with an angle floor plan, allows
shoppers the most creativity of movement and encourages browsing.
Instead of using defined aisles, the angles and corners of
fixtures/displays guide customers around the store. This is a great option
for stores with less inventory and higher-end merchandise, like jewelry
stores and custom boutiques of any kind.
Characteristics:
1- Arranges fixtures and aisles
asymmetrically.
2- Relaxed environment.
3- Facilitates shopping and browsing.
4- Personal selling more important .
5- Store sacrifices some storage and
display space to create the more
spacious environment
45. Jeweler shop Lighting
Integrated light:
- Integrated LED luminaires can create a stimulating environment where the light will
not glare and disturb the impression.
- Narrow shelves, furniture and other displays can be illuminated with smaller
luminaires optimized for integrated lighting.
Getting close to the products:
- At a jewelry shop it is all about seeing the details. The lighting should enhance the
items and therefore it is important that the lighting does not create glare.
- Jewelry shops have many displays with products arranged by campaign, season or
brand. Try to distribute the lighting in these spaces so that the customer can get
close to the products, seeing the details.
46. Jeweler shop Lighting
Mirrors:
- It is important to think about the lighting in front of the mirrors.
- Use integrated light in the mirror and illuminate with spotlights obliquely from
the front. This provides flattering facial lighting.
Light temperature experiences:
- In general it is common to use a warmer color temperature, around 3000 K, in a
jewelry shop.
- But it also depends on the brand values. Accentuated warmer light gives a nice
atmosphere in the shop. But if the brand is focused on being exclusive a colder
light can trigger such an experience.
47. Jeweler shop Lighting
Display window:
- The display window is where the brand is introduced, it is the shop's front,
giving the first impression to the audience.
- The architecture and lighting design needs to work together to capture attention.
- The space must take every opportunity to show the shop's brand and offer.
- It is not easy to stand out in all the visual impressions that a customer is
exposed to in retail.
- Attention can be created with a good mix of displayed products, the interior and
the lighting.
- The large contrasts creates an interest that can inspire and make the customer
enter the shop.
48. Jeweler shop Lighting
Product suggestions for the display window:
Relay Spot:
- Relay Spot is a miniature LED Spotlight suitable for furniture
applications.
- It can be generously aimed and tilted towards the products.
Diva II:
- Diva II is a slender luminaire with a high light output
that suits almost anywhere.
- It is a perfect luminaire for retail cabinet displays.
Marathon:
- Marathon LED is a luminaire that creates focused
light with sharp shades. Available in three different
sizes.
Marathon recessed:
- A classic cylindrical shape with a distinct trim ring.
The recessed version can be used as a discreet
down light, semi recessed spotlight or fully extracted
spotlight.
49. Jeweler shop Lighting
Cashier desk:
- The cashier area should function as a central piece in the shop, illuminated both
for function and as a decorative highlighted element.
- Use luminaries and accessories such as cap cones or honeycomb Louvre to
lower the risk of glare.
- To further highlight the cashier use decorative luminaires that stands out, such
as a LED pendant.
- Warmer ambient light gives a more comfortable feeling in which the customer
gets a nice experience of the items on display.

57. Fashion shop Circulation
1- Loop Layout: is a type of store layout in which a major customer aisle
begins at the entrance, loops through the store, usually in the shape of a
circle, square, ar rectangle, and then returns the customer the front of the
store.
- Loop layouts are great for stores that have lots of products, especially if
there are different sections for each type/genre of product. This would be
a great layout for something like a sporting goods and clothing store.
Advantages
Exposes customers to the greatest amount of merchandise
58. Fashion shop Circulation
1- Arranges fixtures and
aisles asymmetrically.
2- Relaxed environment.
3- Facilitates shopping and
browsing.
4- Personal selling more
important .
5- Store sacrifices some
storage and display space to
create the more spacious
environment

62. Grocery shop Function
- grocery store:
- A grocery store is a small to medium-sized store which carries an assortment of
foodstuffs. It should be smaller or more limited in its offerings than a
supermarket.
- It does not include specialty food stores like candy stores, convenience stores,
bakeries, delicatessens, take-out places, fast food, or any kind of cooking or
dining establishments.
- This type also excludes marketplaces where various vendors set up stalls.
63. Grocery shop Layout
1- Straight Floor Plan:
- The straight floor plan is an excellent store layout for most any type of retail
store.
- The straight floor plan makes optimum use of the walls, and utilizes the space in the
most judicious manner.
- The straight floor plan creates spaces within the retail store for the customers to
move and shop freely. It is one of the commonly implemented store designs.
64. Grocery shop Layout
There are two main reasons which endorse the straight floor plan:
1- It is one of the most efficient and economical options:
- With all the fixtures/displays at right angles, a straight floor plan makes
the most efficient use of both floor and wall space. Even commonly
unused areas, like corners, can be used for displays/shelving.
- Many small businesses only have a small amount of actual floor space,
This is why wall fixtures/displays can be so important, especially
considering that they are one of the most affordable display options.

Grocery shop Circulation
Grid Layout: is a type of store layout in which counters and fixtures are
placed in long rows or “runs,” usually at right angles, throughout the
store.
- In a grid layout, often paired with a straight floorplan, aisles generally
run parallel and perpendicular to walls, promoting movement up and
down aisles.
- This layout can be a great option for grocery stores and convenience
stores, because it is efficient and allows customers to get what they
want and keep moving.
Advantages
- Low cost
- Customer familiarity
- Merchandise exposure
- Ease of cleaning
- Simplified security
- Possibility of self-service
67. Grocery shop Circulation
CHARACTERISTICS:
- Impersonal but efficient atmosphere.
- Not aesthetically pleasing arrangement but good if customers plans
are to move throughout the entire store.
- less wasted space.
- accommodate shoppers and carts Fixturing cost is reduced.

69. Grocery shop Lighting
Accent lighting:
- Accentuated light gives a dynamic store. By using spotlights you can create interest
in different merchandise on displays and gondolas to create eye-catching spaces to
which customers are drawn.
Integrated lighting:
- In large aisles integrated lighting makes a true difference. Combine the general light
with integrated lighting that enables you to lower the general light and also give a
sense of space.
- A store has many shelves, which creates different rooms and aisles.
- By illuminating the vertical Spaces something happens to the overall impression and
the sense of the place.
- The items will be illuminated in a better way and the merchandise gets good visibility
and the aisles feels more welcoming.

- Accent light is beneficial in this area. Lower the general lighting and add spotlights or
recessed spotlights in the ceiling.
- This is an area where the ceiling height can be lowered which enables you to work more
with the atmosphere.
- If it is height ceilings, choose a spotlight with good light output.
- Choose spotlights and mix them with luminaires with a Glow function.
