This document discusses different aspects of communication, including forms of communication, verbal communication, nonverbal communication, and visual communication. It also discusses the three stages of interpersonal communication: the phatic stage, which is a formal greeting; the personal stage, where people open up more about their lives and want to learn about each other; and the intimate stage, which is reserved for close friends and family where people share personal feelings.

1. Aspects of Mass Communication
Forms of Communication
All living things communicate, but in human beings the process is far more complex than it
amongst the animals. This has been an important part of human evolution. To communicate is a
very basic need for human beings, next in importance to the primary necessities of life food,
clothing and shelter.
Communication is an individual as well as a social need. In our everyday life we go through the
various possibilities of communication such as individual to individual, individual to group, group
to individual and groups to groups.
Verbal Communication
Verbal communication depends on words to deliver meaning. It is further subdivided into written
communication and oral communication.
Written communication - can involve anything from words on a page to emails, to text
messages.
Oral communication - involves spoke words. This can be done in person, through the phone, or
over video chat. Oral communication is often quicker than written communication although
meaning can be shaded using tone, inflection, and volume.
Nonverbal Communication
Nonverbal communication occurs when meaning or messages are sent or received without the
use of words. Nonverbal communication can be intentional or unintentional.

2. Physical nonverbal communication can be displayed through body language, facial expressions,
touch, or eye contact. Nonverbal communication can also be used to modify the meaning of
verbal communications. Some researchers believe that nonverbal communications account for 55
percent of all communication.
Visual Communication
Our third and final means of communication, visual communication, utilizes drawings,
illustrations, pictures, colors, graphs, charts, and signs to share meaning. Visual communication
can be used in conjunction with verbal communication, or it can stand on its own. Visual
communication is frequently used in advertising, art, and entertainment. Often, this form of
communication can be left further up to interpretation than other forms of communication. In
these cases, it is often the recipient of the communication who imparts at least some meaning on
the message.

The Phatic Stage - This word is derived from the Greek word 'phasis' meaning an utterance. This
is the formal stage of conversation and begins with the usual salutation like Hi! Hello! Namaskar!
Salaam Aleikum etc. the salutation would be more or less the same, whether the persons meeting
and greeting each other or are meeting for the first time. It is warming up stage, that may or may
not lead to the next i.e personal stage.
The Personal Stage - In this stage we are prepared to open up a bit more with our feelings and
thoughts and would talk about one's job, profession, family, friends, etc. Reciprocal response is
expected during this conversation..Like’s what i told you about me, but hey, I would like to know
more about you similarly.This stage also means that we are willing to go beyond the formal stage
with a new acquaintance.
The Intimate Stage - It is reserved for friends and relatives, whom we trust and look to for
listening to, sharing our personal feelings. The degree of intimacy depends upon the closeness of
relationship.We tend to share our anxieties and ambitions during these conversations.
