DEFINATION OF 
COMMUNICATION 
The word communication derived 
from Latin word communicare , which 
means to share, and this sharing is of 
information, knowledge, and 
thoughts. 
Communication can be defined as 
the exchange of ideas , information 
and knowledge between sender and 
receiver through an accepted code of 
symbols.
TYPES OF 
COMMUNICATION 
 Mainly there are two types of 
communication : 
 1. Verbal communication. 
 2. Non-verbal communication 
 Verbal communication is further divided in 
two types : 
 1. Written. 
 2. Oral.
VERBAL AND NON-VERBAL 
COMMUNICATION 
Communication in which we use words to 
communicate is called verbal communication. 
e.g. Writing E-mail, letters, post cards, talking 
with friends. 
Communication in which words are not 
included is called Non-Verbal communication. 
e.g. Watching a photo, Watching a silent 
movie, Understanding the meaning of signs on 
road and meaning traffic signal lights.
VERBAL 
COMMUNICATION 
 Verbal Communication has two parts: 
 1. Written Communication 
 when we communicate through written 
words is called written communication. 
This include writing letter, E-mail, reports, 
assignments, editing in news paper, Writing 
exam paper in examination hall, etc. 
It is most effective in organisation and in 
governmental works.

2. Oral Communication. 
The second type of verbal communication is 
oral communication. 
When we talk with our friends, teachers, boss, 
professors, relatives we use oral communication. 
In this words are spoken not written. We use 
this in our daily life works. 
e.g. Talking in every day life, hearing music, 
during conferences, etc.
NON- VERBAL 
COMMUNICATION 
Communication which does not 
include word is called non-verbal 
communication. 
It includes: 
1.Kinesics. 
2.Proxemics. 
3.Chronemics. 
4.Haptics. 
5.Oculesics. 
6.Papalinguistics.
NON- VERBAL 
COMMUNICATION 
1. Kinesics 
 This include study of body’s physical movements 
such as face and eyes, gestures, body shape and 
postures, appearance, sign language. 
2. Proxemics. 
This include study how people perceive the 
physical space around them. 
3. Chronemics. 
 In this we study how we perceive time, 
structure of our time and reaction towards time.
NON- VERBAL 
COMMUNICATION 
 4. Haptics: 
 In this study of touch is done including 
how we handshake, holding hands, back 
patting or even brushing arms. 
 5. Oculesics: 
 In this eye movements of people are 
studied. 
 6. Paralingustics: 
 This include the study of pitch, tone, 
volume, tempo, rhythm, articulation, 
resonance and even the accent of speakers.
