Serious work in AI began in the 1950s with experiments on machine thinking. The Turing test, proposed by Alan Turing, tests a machine's ability to have an intelligent conversation indistinguishable from a human. Modern applications of AI include CAPTCHAs, which test if a user is human or computer. Key domains of AI include expert systems, learning systems, robotics, natural language processing, and more. Machine learning allows software to learn from data and experience to improve tasks like speech recognition, video recommendations, traffic prediction, and digital advertising auctions.
