ARTERIAL CANNULATION
OBJECTIVES
By the end of this lecture students will be able to know
the :
 Indications of arterial cannulation.
 Methods of insertion of arterial cannulation.
 Care of arterial line.
INDICATION
a) Continuous beat-to-beat monitoring of blood
pressure.
b) Frequent blood sampling for lab analysis.
METHODS OF INSERTING ARTERIAL
CANNULATION
 The Seldinger technique
 Performed by accessing the artery with a needle
 Feeding a guidewire through the needle lumen.
 Placing catheter in the artery by feeding it over the
guidewire.
 Removing the guidewire leaving only catheter.
CARE OF ARTERIAL LINE
 Check the site 6 hourly to assess for bleeding.
 Use minimal dressing material.
 Assess for evidence of compromised color,
circulation or motion.
 Lines should be removed if there are signs of
infection
SUMMARY
 Arterial lines are placed to monitor beat to beat
blood pressure in critical patient.
 The technique of insertion is usually seldinger
technique.
 Care of arterial line is by vigilant observation of the
site and cleaning.
