This document evaluates 4 CD programs for teaching English: English Words, SATS SOFT Vocabulary, Learn English, and Speak English. Each CD is evaluated based on interactivity, usability, content appropriateness, effectiveness, and performance attractiveness. English Words and SATS SOFT Vocabulary are designed for beginner levels, while Learn English targets beginners and Speak English targets intermediate learners. The CDs use games, feedback, and multimedia like videos and audio to engage learners.

CD PROGRAMS EVALUATION
Introduction
I evaluate this CD programs, based on some principles (Hartoyo, 2006:90-91), such as
Interactivity (feedback and instruction), Usability (flexibility), Content (appropriatness),
Effectiveness and Performance (attractiveness). Let’s start by the first CD:
1. English Words
a. Interactivity
The interactivity of this CD is proven by the feedback given from this CD to the learner if
the learner get correct answer, so, there will be a sound of “Wehehey!” but if the learner got
incorrect answer so there will be a sound of “Dong!”.
b. Usability
This CD can be used by the learner to learn almost four English basic skills except
writing such as reading skill, listening skill and speaking skill to practice the learner
pronunciation skill.
c. Content Appropriateness
The English vocabulary that used by This CD is easy comprehended vocabularies. So, the
learner will easier in learning English from this CD. There are some topics:
2. 1. Game
There are some categories of game that can be chosen by the learner, they are:
a. Road hog
b. Rescue
c. Night Search
d. Frozen food
e. Players
f. Result
g. Sound
h. SAT SOFT website
i. Exit
Each game has about 12 levels of difficulty that can be played by the learner and make
the CD has its own strength.
d. Effectiveness
This CD (English Words) is appropriate for the beginner level for learning English at age
of 5 – 11 (kindergarten – junior high school students).
e. Performance Attractiveness
This CD is formed in game. So the learner can learn English while they are playing game.
So, it will be so much fun in learning from the CD. Moreover it uses some attractive colors
(pink, yellow) that can make the learner do not feel bore when they learn English.
3. 2. SATS SOFT, Vocabulary
a. Interactivity
The interactivity of this CD is proven by the feedback given from this CD to the learner if
the learner get correct answer, so, there will be a sound of “Wehehey!” but if the learner got
incorrect answer so there will be a sound of “Dong!”.
b. Usability
This CD can be used by the learner to learn almost four English basic skills except
writing such as reading skill, listening skill and speaking skill to practice the learner
pronunciation skill.
c. Content Appropriateness
This CD is appropriate for the learner in intermediate level, because the vocabularies
given are varieties. The learner can choose the topics that they want to learn because of this CD
is contain of some topics, they are:

5. Players
6. Result
7. Sound

9. Exit
d. Effectiveness
This CD is appropriate for the learner in intermediate level at age 15-22 years old.

This CD is quite attractive because it uses some colours and the learning package is in
form of game.
3. LEARN ENGLISH
a. Interactivity
The interactivity of this CD is proven by the feedback given from this CD to the
learner if the learner gets correct answer, so, there will be a sound in Bahasa (Selamat!) which
means good, and English (Yes!) For correct answer, and (No!) to indicate incorrect answer.
b. Usability
This CD can be used to learn the three English basic skills (Speaking, Writing and
Listening) for the learner at the beginner level.
c. Content Appropriateness
This CD is very interesting, it provide the learner to choose the instruction in their first
language. This CD is contain of some topics, they are:
1. First words
2. Food
3. colors
4. phrase
5. Body
6. Numbers
7. Time
8. Shopping
9. Countries
5. This CD is appropriate for the learner in the beginner level since it provide the learner to
learn English from the basic vocabularies.
d. Effectiveness
This CD is effective for the learner in the beginner level for learning English at the age of
7 – 15 (elementary – junior high school students).
e. Performance Attractiveness
This CD uses games and some pictures to make the learner interesting in learning English
from this CD.
4. SPEAK ENGLISH
a. Interactivity
This CD is less interactive than in the beginner one because it only uses one language
which is target language (English). Further, the feedback given from this CD to the learner only
in form of checklist (√ ) for the correct answer and (X) for the incorrect answer.
b. Usability
This CD can be used to learn speaking skill and listening skill. Since in this CD the
learner listen the speaker and can record their own voice.
c. Content Appropriateness
This CD is contains of some topics, they are:
1. The Alphabet
2. Greetings
3. At the restaurant
4. Shopping
5. Getting around
6. 6. At the hotel
7. On the phone
8. Emergencies
9. Leisure
10. Business
The learner can choose one of the topics to drill their speaking skill especially their
pronunciation by recording their voice.
d. Effectiveness
This CD is very effective for the intermediate learners at age 15 – 18 years of age (senior high
school students).
e. Performance Attractiveness
This CD is quite attractive since it is quite colorful (orange, green, pink). Moreover this
CD provides some videos to make the learner clearer about the topic.
