CALL PROGRAM ASSESSMENT
The CALL program is designed on five principles; those are interactivity, usability,
content appropriateness, effectiveness, and performance.
a. Interactivity refers to how the program can stimulate interaction, especially the
interaction between the computer and the user. It includes the effectiveness of the
instructions and feedback provided in the program.
b. Usability refers to the flexibility, ease and inherent interest of the program used, and
how easy it is to navigate within the program.
c. Content appropriateness is concerned with the amount of material presented in the
program, how easily the material is learned and understood, and how far the material
meets the students’ need.
d. Effectiveness refers to how effectively the program assists language learners to
improve their mastery of grammar.
e. Performance (attractiveness) refers to the presentation, layout of the screen, the color,
and the illustrations like picture, diagram, charts, etc which are used in the program.
There are four CDs need to be assessed namely Vocabulary, English Word, Learn
English (Talk More! Beginners), and Speak English (Talk More! Intermediate). Therefore,
below is the analysis of the four CDs of CALL program based on those principles.
1. Vocabulary
a. Interactivity
This game can stimulate interaction between the user and the computer. When the user
makes a mistake, it will be corrected immediately and the user can choose the right
answer. Nonetheless, some parts of the instructions are hard to be understood so it can
make difficulty in the first using.
b. Usability
The game is fun, challenging and interesting because it is colorful and the picture is
interesting. This game is also easy to navigate. However, the user can not choose a
certain menu, and certain theme for group of words.
c. Content appropriateness
Material content is too complicated for the elementary school students because the
vocabulary used in the game is too difficult. The game is suitable for the students of
Junior High School. However, the students can choose the level of difficulties based on
their competence.
d. Effectiveness
This game will be effective to improve the user’s vocabularies with numerous groups of
words provided.
e. Performance
It is an interesting way of learning new vocabulary with variety of groups of words with
attractive pictures, colors and sound.
2. English Word
a. Interactivity
Quite similar to the “Vocabulary” game, some parts of the instructions are unclear and
it can make difficulty in the first using. The user needs to try more than once to play the
game before they know the true way of playing.
b. Usability
This program is very easy to navigate.
c. Content appropriateness
The content is suitable for students in elementary level. For junior and senior high
school level, this program is too easy because it is only like playing with colors.
d. Effectiveness
This program is effective to improve the students’ vocabulary mastery; besides, it is
also able to develop listening skill.
e. Performance
It is a fun way to learn English with a very interactive colorful pictures and figures.
3. Learn English
a. Interactivity
This program can stimulate interaction by communicative exercises and examples, but
it uses less instruction so the user may start the game by guessing of what they should
do. In addition, it has good feedback and positive reinforcement in which it will tell the
users when they make a mistake and let them know the right answer.
b. Usability
The navigation works well, easy to play and operate, but there is still some problem
because sometimes it is difficult to understand the keys and the content.
c. Content appropriateness
The material content of the CD varies in a very interactive and quite complete task and
topic, so the user will be able to choose the topic they want to learn.
d. Effectiveness
This program is very effective to enrich students’ vocabulary and it can also develop
listening and speaking skill.
e. Performance
It is a very fun and interesting program with attractive pictures, colors, and the whole
composition which can enrich children’s vocabulary, listening and speaking skills.
4. Speak English
a. Interactivity
The instructions are unclear enough. There seems to be two different speakers who
speak one after another which is quite confusing because sometimes they say different
things.
b. Usability
Students can choose a certain menu based on their needs and level. The buttons used
are pretty simple but quite confusing.
c. Content appropriateness
Conversation material in this program is suitable for junior and senior high school
students.
d. Effectiveness
This program will be effective to improve students’ skills like listening, speaking,
reading, and grammar.
e. Performance
The whole performance is great. This program is quite interesting because it also gives
quizzes as the assessment of the exercises given.
