William Edward Burghardt Du Bois was one of the most important activist in the early 20th
century. He was born February 23, 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts. In 1885 Du Bois
came across his first encounter with the Jim Crow laws. He went to Harvard to receive his
masters and before completing his masters he was offered an opportunity to study abroad in Berlin.
Du Bois is known for many of his accomplishments such as being one of the most important civil

The Unity Of Early Greece
The unity of early Greece was dissolved when powerful city states Athens and Sparta became
immersed in a war, known as, the Peloponnesian War. The war began when Sparta led its alliance,
the Peloponnesian League, against Athens to test its seemingly imperialistic design. The league
consisted of Sparta, Thebes, and Corinth. Thucydides, an Athenian historian, philosopher, and
general is credited for much of what is known about the Peloponnesian War. Throughout the war he
kept an accurately detailed description of the events taking place. He published it titled History of
the Peloponnesian War with the intent for future generations to be able to understand how and why

Its prosperity increased when it was offered leadership of the Delian League in recognition of its
high performance in the Persian War. The Delian League served as a defensive organization to
protect Greece from future attacks. It collected money from its participating members to be stored
in the treasury on the island of Delos. Athens dictated the amount of contributions from each
member and distributed the funds. (Gill) However, suspicions of Athens abuse of power soon began
to rise. Other cities believed Athens primary goal was to strengthen itself rather than to protect the
overall interests of Greece. The transfer of the Delian League s funds from Delos to Athens
confirmed the suspicions of its selfish intentions. With the Delian League morphing into the
Athenian Empire, the peace treaty was nulled and the Peloponnesian War began.
The causes of the Peloponnesian War have often been debated, but centralize around the same idea.
Thucydides, the Athenian historian, said, The real cause I consider to be the one which was
formally most kept out of sight. The growth of the power of Athens, and the alarm which this
inspired in Lacedaemon, made war inevitable. (Thucydides, 13) He believed that Athens
increasingly dominating power initiated Sparta and its counterparts to take action. The goal of the
