Rock And Roll History
The begins of rock and roll have always been challenged as to when they were first established. The
most common argument is that is first started in Southern United states, the birth place of many of
the first early rock and roll music hits. As the south always had a huge majority of slaves from
Africa and immigrants from Europe, through the gathering of different influences that created a
connection between African musical traditions with European instrumentation. Immigration of
once slaves to populated urban centers including New York City and Chicago meant that both the
black and white communities were living in close proximity, resulting in hearing each other s
music and even began to follow and impersonate each other s fashions .

record business terms, rock roll indicated that modest, formerly specialized labels like Sun and
Specialty were overrunning the higher influences of the pop charts, along with the privileged
domain of the important industrial record labels and old line Tin Pan Alley music publishing

The traditions at Baylor depict the universityВґs heritage and ways to honor the past. I feel that
through all the traditions that Baylor upholds, many generations of Bears come together and share
a common familiarity. A tradition that has always captivated me is the Baylor Line. Since the
Baylor Line is composed of entirely new students, it is a great way to show support to freshman
students. Baylor University has so much to offer to me, and I want to contribute to the school in
the same way. I can contribute to the diversity of the university, not only ethnically. As a leader in
my community, I aspire to begin new clubs that are either athletic or artistic. Moreover, I look
forward to become a working student in the community. As the university helps me financially to
receive an education, I would like to become part of the faculty at my school. It is a sympathetic
means to show my gratitude for all the good experiences I will obtain at Baylor

Fiji Water and the Chocolate Slaves Essay
The fact of the matter is that today, stuff selling mega corporations have a huge influence on our
daily lives. And because of the competitive nature of our global economy, these corporations are
generally only concerned with one thing...the bottom line. That is, maximizing profit, regardless of
the social or environmental costs. David Suzuki
Bottling of freshwater from a rare resource in the Fiji Islands, and harvesting of cocoa beans via
child slave labor in West Africa, are both ethically questionable. Business practices from both

argued that bottled water is morally unacceptable the discomforting fact while having perfectly
good tap water, the UK spends almost $2 billion pounds on bottled water, its treated as a luxury
bauble while others die from its absence . The Fiji Water Company, LLC provides some water to
surrounding villages after cyclones and flash flooding, it also provides some funding towards
clean water projects across the islands, but the company is not responsible for the islander s
water supply (Heap, 2008). Fiji Water s good works are more hope than reality. Two years after a
riot at the water plant, the Vatukaloko Trust Fund was created, a charity targeting several villages
surrounding the plant, agreed to donate .15 percent of its Fijian operation s revenues, a company
official testified that the total was about $100,000 in 2007 (for perspective, the trade journal
Brandweek put Fiji Water s marketing budget at $10 million in 2008) (Lenzer, 2009). The
aforementioned presents an ethical issue with Fiji Water profiting from freshwater pumped from
the aquifer, then exported and marketed as a luxury product, meanwhile the people of Fiji are
getting sicker in certain cases dying from the lack of it. This can be viewed as controversial and
moral contextual issue; under Applied Ethics the normative principles that can be argued are Social
Benefit, Principle of Benevolence, and the Principle of Paternalism. Next, an additional concern

Psychological Egoism
Psychological egoism is the view that everyone always acts selfishly. It describes human nature
as being wholly self centered and self motivated. Psychological egoism is different from ethical
egoism in their direction of fit to the world. Psychological ego ism is a factual theory. It aims to
fit the world. In the world is not how psychological ego ism says it is because someone acts
unselfishly, then something is wrong with psycho logical egoism. In my opinion this argumentis
completely wrong and unsound. According to James Rachel, an author of Elements of Moral
Philosophy, there two main arguments exist against psychological egoism. The first argument can be
formulated as such:
1)Everyone always does what they most want to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Rachels p. 74) One can conclude from this that it is the object of the want that should be considered
when determining the selfishness of an act. The second argument for psychological egoism is
formulated like this:
1)Everyone always does what they most want to do.
2)If are does what one wants to do, ones gets satisfaction.
3)If one gets satisfaction from doing what they want to do, then satisfaction is one s only goal
4)If satisfaction is one s only goal, one acts selfishly.
5)Everyone always acts selfishly. The major criticism of this argument lays in premise three, its
factual premise as James Rachel calls it in his book. Opponents of this argument and Rachel
being one of them, imply that it is wrong to say that satisfaction is one s only goal because
satisfaction doesn t even have to be a goal. Satisfaction is the presumable state that results from
ob taining a goal. Thus premise three is wrong. One can say that you can make satisfaction your
goal if you will feel bad if you don t do something, but this is not always the case. Satisfaction can
result from something else. And it is also incorrect to say that one makes satisfaction his goal
then chooses his desires to fulfill the satisfaction. (J. Rachels p. 82) The second criticism is in
premise four. Rachels proposes to change the premise, making it less problematic by saying that
satisfaction is ones primary goal instead of one s only goal.

Discipline Is Vital To Parenting In Ray Bradbury s The Veldt
Discipline is Vital to Parenting In today s society, parents that do not discipline their children are
perceived as nonchalant, or carefree. Ray Bradbury, an acclaimed writer, disagrees with this
concept. Instead, Bradbury would say that discipline is a vital component of parenting, and
without it, children will commit awful acts. With the use of foreshadowing and allusion in his
short story, The Veldt , Bradbury depicts that a lack of discipline leads to horrendous, potentially
deadly consequences. Bradbury foreshadows the parents fatal deaths to develop the
repercussions they face for not disciplining Wendy and Peter. For instance, after the Hadleys
have dinner, the parents head to the nursery and find George s old wallet with drops of saliva and
blood smears on both sides (Bradbury 8). The disturbing state George and Lydia find the wallet in
hints that something is wrong with the nursery and that the virtual animals can affect real life
objects. Bradbury also adds the following dialogue between the parents: Those screams they sound
familiar. Do they? Yes, awfully (9). The two screams Mr. and Mrs. Hadley heard were strikingly
familiar because they were their own screams, hinting that the children wanted them dead and that
the lions in the nursery were going to kill them. Throughout The Veldt , the parents hardly
discipline their children, or care for them, causing the children to despise them and develop a rotten
character. Had the parents properly ruled

Crime And Punishment During The Elizabethan Era
Crime and Punishment Draft The topic of crime has been booming in modern day news. Stories
of corrupt policemen and sexual misconduct allegations have flooded social media and everyday
conversation, but crime has always been a large aspect of society. However, modern day laws
have been overall consistent for a long period of time. During the Elizabethan era, many new crimes
and punishments were created by a growing development and knowledge. Accordingly, the
evolution of law grew dramatically during the Elizabethan age.
Laws originated from localism and were often controlled by ecclesiastical courts until the
medieval age ended. Laws were influenced heavily by the idea of localism, which commonly
revolved around the need for local goods, local government, and a local justice system. Often crime
was defined by ecclesiastical courts; crimes involving morality or violations of the church s
conception of sin were handled locally. However, after the introduction of Roman law, the power to
define crime became a duty of the ruler (Brackett, John 1999). The state had complete authority to
define crimes, even crimes of morality. The accusatorial method had been the popular choice until
the introduction of the inquisitorial method which was based on Roman law. However, it was said
This form of prosecution gave little power to judges. (Crime and Punishment 2004).
Crimes and punishments were often made to be equal for both commoners and aristocrats. Crimes
were divided by the

Diagnosing Alzheimer s Disease
Alzheimer s disease is a very common genetic disease that affects about 3 million people per
year in the United States alone. It is a degenerative brain disorder that mainly causes memory
loss and confusion. It is a type of dementia, known as senile dementia, and is a progressive
disease that destroys memory and interferes with everyday life functions. Early Onset Alzheimer
s, also known as Familial Alzheimer s, is a type of Alzheimer s that is diagnosed before the age
of 65. About 5% of all Alzheimer s cases are Early Onset; this equates out to about 200,000 people
in America. The most common kind of Early Onset Alzheimer s that runs in families is genetically
linked to the three alleles APP, PSEN1 and PSEN2 on the gene APOE,

Doctors usually use a lot of little tests to rule out other types of dementia. Methods used to rule
out other diseases are brain imaging, biomarker test, testing proteins and spinal fluids. Those are
all methods used by testing the patient s body, but there are many other tests that don t involve
that kind of testing. Examples of this would be looking into patients family histories (because
early onset Alzheimer s can be passed on), history of medicine they have taken or previous or
current substance abuse that could make them more susceptible to Alzheimer s, or simply a
mental status determination, during which the doctor would ask them questions, ask them to
remember certain things, test ability to read and write, and attention span. Also, because Early
Onset is diagnosed usually in the patients 30s, 40s, or 50s, age is also taken into consideration
before diagnosing. All of these could lead to the diagnosis of Early Onset Alzheimer s. There are
many symptoms of Early Onset Alzheimer s. The symptoms are divided into two categories: early
and late. Early symptoms include: forgetting things one would usually remember; asking for the
same information again; poor judgement; easily losing track of date, time, and where one is;
difficulty solving problems; changes in personality and lack of motivation. Some of the late
symptoms are: severe mood swings; confusion about time, date and year; not knowing/being
suspicious of who family/friends are; severe memory loss and difficulty swallowing, walking, and

Sonnet 116 Figurative Language Essay
Romeo and Juliet may be one of Shakespeare s greatest works, but the famous poet has written a
numerous amount of other fantastic masterpieces. Another one of Shakespeare s great works
Sonnet 116 , was written during the Victorian time period in England. This poem is Shakespeare s
interpretation of what true loveis, and what it looks like. Throughout the poem, there are many
literary devices used to convey Shakespeare s belief on true love such as metaphors, imagery,
and repetition. The use of metaphors is commonly seen throughout Shakespeare s poem.
Metaphors are used in the poem to describe how love is a guide for lost humans. In the middle of
the poem on line 7 love is compared to the star to every wand ring bark (Shakespeare line 7). In
that line, the star is an allusion to the North star, while the wand ring bark is a reference to any
ship at sea. During the Victorian era, the North Star was used by all ships to get a sense of direction

Through numerous literary techniques, from simple ones as metaphors and repetition to more
complicated devices such as imagery, Shakespeare has successfully crafted a poem with such
deep meaning that resembles the true idea of love. From using metaphors to compare love to a
guide to using imagery to show loves perseverance and strength, and finally using repetition to
show what love is not, he has successfully left his ideas in the mind of the reader. To end his
famous poem Shakespeare has a simple message to all, if he is wrong about his belief on what
love is, then no one on this planet has truly experienced and felt love and Shakespeare himself
had never truly been a great writer and poet. Ranging from the idea of love to describing what it is

When fabricated in accordance with military specifications, it should be able to withstand
thermal processing, or retort processing, and a wide temperature range sufficient enough to
prevent package damage during transportation and storage. Food packaged in a conventional can
must be cooked approximately twice as long as food contained in a retort pouch, as well. To
sterilize the food contained in either form of packaging, it must be brought up to approximately
245В° F and kept there for a specified period of time. Retort packages have a thin profile and a
high ratio of surface area to volume. Heat penetrates the food much more quickly when it only has
to reach the inside of an approximately half inch thick mass, rather than a much larger mass in a
round can.
Coloring is also applied to either the exterior or interior surface of the polyester layer. While the
pouch is considered a quot;tough quot; package, it is not indestructible. The strength of the pouch
and its resistance to damage comes from its tri laminar structure. Strength of the pouch has always
been an issue for the Military, and it s difficult for some to understand that plastic can be as strong
as steel, as metal cans are usually associated with strength.

Coming Out From Behind The Badge
AJ 25 Book Critique (HANNA SANSOM Spring 2016)
Book
Miraglia, G. (2007). Coming out from behind the badge. Bloomington, IN: AuthorHouse.
Summary
Coming out from behind the badge is a novel written by a gay police officer named Greg focusing
on homosexuality in the law enforcement profession. Throughout part I of the novel, Greg uses
his own personal stories, as well as other s personal stories, to help those going into law
enforcement have a better understanding of homosexuality in the workplace. Following in part II,
Greg gives step by step advice about coming out of the closet to fellow gay officers, and the ways
to create an accepting workplace for the LGBT community.
By giving perspectives of both gay men in the workplace and straight men who have
encountered gay men in the workplace, it gives the reader real life examples of what it can be
like. This book gives great advice for those who are looking to come out in law enforcement as
well as giving good advice to those who may have fellow LGBT coworkers. It really shows LGBT
officers options about what they can do about coming out in their department while still ensuring a
successful law enforcement career.
Coming out can be scary for both the person coming out and the people they are telling, and
Miraglia does a great job of acknowledging this is the book and giving solutions. The person
coming out is terrified of what they will think, and the person

Anti Intellectualism By Richard Hofstadter
What is Anti Intellectualism? According to Dictionary.com, Anti Intellectualism is defined as being
hostile toward intellectuals and the modern academic, artistic, social, religious worlds as well as
other theories that are associated with them. Although Richard Hofstadter s Anti Intellectualism in
American Life won the 1964 Pulitzer Prize, it is now almost fifty fives out of date. Not to mention
the ideas within the book are seen as suggesting a type of self defensive justification rather than an
actual deep investigation. Hoftstader used the aftermath of McCarthyism and how there were wide
range witch hunts among the academics and progressives and how that is influenced by the reform,
socialists and communist movements between the World Wars. Applying McCarthyism, Hoftstader
looks at the tension from four different perspectives: religion, politics, business, self help culture,
and education. Taking into consideration the year the book was written, each angle is explored
from the colonial period up until the 1950s. Throughout the introduction, Hofstadter makes it clear
that the purpose of the book is to shed a little light on our cultural problems. Focusing on the social
and political phenomenon of anti intellectualism Hofstadter applies broad abstractions to social
issues. He explains how applications of the abstracts presented by intellectuals can ultimately pose a
threat to the social and political ambitions of certain and specific individuals. Because of this,

How Is Humor Used In Hamlet
Humor is used for many different reasons. It may be used as a relief after a heavy and dark
situation, to lighten the mood. Sometimes it is used as a defense mechanism, to hide what the
character is truly thinking about. Other times, it may be utilized to accuse someone without being
blatantly rude. In Hamlet, Hamlet constantly uses humorfor different reasons and situations. He
uses subtle humor such as pun when he is feeling depressed. Wit when he is angry and offended.
Comic relief when Hamlet is feeling relaxed and is with someone he trust. Thus, humor is used to
reveal Hamlet s emotion. Hamlet uses puns whenever he is feeling down and do not have any

This Blessed House Analysis
Performance in This Blessed House Jhumpa Lahiri s short story This Blessed House is one of
many stories in her Pulitzer Prize winning collection Interpreter of Maladies and follows a
newlywed Indian American couple, Sanjeev and Twinkle, settling into their first suburban home
together. As Twinkle begins to find and admire Christian objects scattered around the house
,
Sanjeev wants to throw them all away, underscoring that Sanjeev deeply cares about how they
will look if they display these Christian symbols as Hindus, while Twinkle simply wants to have
fun in presenting her discoveries. More deeply rooted in the situation is that Sanjeev wants to
look good in front of his coworkers; he does not get along with Twinkle; and the house he is
supposed to show off in an upcoming housewarming party only troubles him with the Christian
objects. Sanjeev s earlier phone calls with his mother put these three variables of work, spouse,
and home together as a formula, when she says that because he has enough money in the bank,
he needs a wife to look after and love, and that his money is supposed to go toward raising a
family (Lahiri 148). Sanjeev is taught to perform this role of success, and despite it not making
him truly happy, his continual pursuit of it emphasizes that he is attempting to perform a fixed role
that he does not fit into well. Sanjeev s actions and mentality in This Blessed House reflect upon

Jim Crow Finds Its Roots In The Old Jingle Mocking Black
Jim Crow finds its roots in the old jingle mocking black men titled Jump Jim Crow. The song,
performed by the white Thomas D. Rice covered in blackface, was meant to mock Andrew
Jackson and his policies which were popular among populist voters (Woodward 2001). In a way,
this event gave way for white Americans to ridicule their black counterparts using the phrase
Jim Crow to single them out for their blackness as opposed the increasingly unpopular use of the
word Negro. Over the next several decades, we saw the rapid decline of what little rights black
Americans had and a drastic increase in incarceration of the same black Americans.
These set of laws and institutions that dismantled the humanity of blacks came to be known as the

the Congress: Mandatory Minimum
Penalties in the Federal Criminal Justice System, we can see a striking change in the focus of the
criminal justice system throughout history (2011). In 1951, Congress reformed the way mandatory
minimum sentences work in the United States. They did this through three key steps: first, they
enacted more mandatory minimums that previously did not exist for many crimes. For many, this
was seen as a tough stance against crime and overall a good decision. Second, minimum penalties
were applied to many crimes that previously had no minimum sentence such as possession of
controlled substances and firearms. For reference, crimes that have historically included a
mandatory minimum are murder, treason, piracy, rape, slavery, and tax evasion. Third, mandatory
minimum sentences were to be increased in length. In 1950, the percentage of whites in state and
federal prisons was a staggering sixty nine percent, and by
1960 that percentage had dropped three points to sixty six percent. Meanwhile, the percentage of
blacks in prisons had increased from thirty to thirty two percent, a two point increase. This small
increase in percentage may not seem like a statistically significant number, but it serves to

Hawthorne, Lawrence shares his beliefs that Hester Prynne is fully guilty in the Puritan society for
committing the sin of adultery. Lawrence believes that all women have the ultimate goal of
seducing men. He feels very strongly that Hester s character should not have any heroic praise, and
he finds ways of justifying the way the Puritans beliefs. Lawrence uses methods of brief repetition,
direct syntax, and complacent tone to convey that Hester Prynneis guilty. D.H. Lawrence uses brief
repetition to represent that Hester is guilty of sin. Lawrence finds ways of writing repetition in
the attempt to get his point across without hesitation when he states, Adulteress, Alpha, Abel,
Adam, America (Lawrence). He is able to fully convey that Hester is sinful with negatively
connotated words that are organized in a repetitive way. Relating Hester to Abel represents his
dislike towards her as well as shows her sin because it represents how low he views her. Abel was
not an innocent character, to say the least. Lawrence uses this comparison in a way that flips their
roles in a sense, and it draws a huge impact. Lawrence finds ways of camouflaging the ways he
uses repetition as well, Worship her there. The Woman, the Magna Mater (Lawrence). By saying
that she is a women and then writing that she is just a fertility mother, he concludes her guilt as
sinful for committing her actions and

The Element Oxygen
The Element Oxygen has a chemical symbol O and atomic number 8. Oxygen was produced by
numerous chemists prior to discovery in 1774, but each chemist failed to record it as an element.
The main people are British clergyman Joseph Priestley, Swedish pharmacist Carl Wilhelm Scheele
and French chemist Antoine Laurent Lavoisier all independently discovered oxygen. But Priestley
usually gets the credit for the discovery. The name oxygen was first used by Lavoisier in 1777.
Oxygen plays an essential role in the lives of humans and other living organism. As well as being
important for health and medical treatments it also helps us burn fuels, teat waters and even protect
us from dangerous UV light thank to the ozone layer. Oxygen therapy is used as a common medical
treatment. You may have seen... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
It is almost the most abundant element in the human body. Oxygen represents about half of the
world s mass outside, 66% of the human s mass body and nine tenths of the mass of water. A lot
of oxygen can be removed from condensed air through a procedure known as fragmentary
refining. Oxygen can likewise be delivered through the electrolysis of water or by warming
potassium chlorate. A reduction in the measure of oxygen per unit volume of air results in a
deficient measure of oxygen entering the circulatory system. The body responds to this condition
quickly. This shortage in oxygen is called Hypoxia. At the point when the body recaptures its
ordinary oxygen supply, one may recuperate from hypoxia. A complete absence of oxygen, which
brings about changeless physical harm or passing, is called Anoxia.
The element oxygen atomic weight is 15.999 and it is classified as a gas and nonmetal. It has the
density of 1.429g/L and the melting pint of 218.79 degree Celsius and 361.82 degree Fahrenheit.
It also has the boiling point of 182.95 degree Celsius and 297.31 degree

Why Is The Battle Of Hastings Successful
The Battle of Hastings, 1066, saw Harold Godwinson, King of England, defeated by William,
Duke of Normandy. This historic battle was the result of Harold s predecessor, Edward the
Confessor, not leaving an heir to the English throne. This led to over 9 months of fighting between
the four claimants to the throne; Edgar the Atheling, Harald Hardrada, William, Duke of Normandy
and Harold Godwinson. At last, only two remained standing; Harold and William. This essay will
describe the events of the Battle of Hastingsand explain the dominating factors of William s
triumph: preparation readiness, good bad luck and leadership tactics.
One of the biggest reasons for William s success was his preparation and readiness. When William

The battle of Hastings took place on Senlac Hill, of which Harold was on. He chose this position
so the Normans would have to charge uphill to get to them. This meant that the Normans would
tire out quicker. Harold put his soldiers in a shield wall, making it harder for William s men to
get to them. William divided his men into three groups roughly corresponding to origin. The left
third was the Bretons, along with those from Anjou, Maine and Poitou. The right was made up by
Frenchmen, along with some men from Picardy, Boulogne, and Flanders, with the centre third
consisting of mainly Normans. William s plan was to use his many archers to weaken the
frontlines and then charge. However, when his plan failed and his arrows bounced harmlessly off
the Saxon shields, he ordered a charge. At his command, all three thirds charged towards the Saxon
wall and engaged in battle almost instantaneously. Many Normans were injured in this clash,
whereas most of the Saxons were well protected by their shield wall. At some point during the
battle, some of William s army, mainly the Bretons, ran away from the battle when they heard that
William had been killed in the clash. William had to take off his helmet

Thin Layer Chromatography And Column Chromatography
Thin Layer Chromatography and Column Chromatography
By Maggi Shelton
Under the Supervision of Dr. Mills Chavonda
The Department of Chemistry and Physics
Milledgeville, GA 31061 Abstract:
Thin layer chromatography and column chromatography are two different methods that allow for
the separation of two miscible solvents. Through column chromatography, a mixture of nonpolar
fluorine and polar fluorenone was successfully separated. Thin layer chromatography was then used
in order to determine the success of the separation based upon the calculated Rf values, which if
the Rf value fell below zero or was above one, then the separation was not successful.
Introduction: Methods used to separate miscible solvents include thin layer chromatography
(TLC) as well as column chromatography. A method used to separate a mixture of miscible
solvents is column chromatography, which is used to purify and separate compounds. The
particular speed of the solvents used in the experiment depended upon the properties, being polar
or nonpolar, as well as the properties of the prepared column (INSERT SOURCE HERE). With
column chromatography, there are two phases that include mobile and stationary phases. In the
experiment performed, the glass column used was first packed with a piece of cotton followed by a
layer of sand in order to keep the silica gel in place and also to prevent the gel from flowing out of
the tube when the particular solvent was added. Based upon whether the

How Did Queen Elizabeth 1 Affect Society
Queen Elizabeth I of England was a gracious, inspiring, and witty ruler that, in many ways,
changed the course of history. Her ruling allowed England to flourish, gain wealth, and change
in drastic ways. Queen Elizabeth started her rule in 1583 when she was 25 years old. Prior to
Elizabeth becoming Queen, a terrible ruler made the country of England an unstable country. This
ruler was Queen Mary, who ruled all of England and Ireland in the early 1500 s. During her rule,
Mary was not a good queen. After many years of being a Protestant nation, Queen Mary wanted to
return England to its former ways of Catholicism. However, in order to bring back the Catholic
Church, Mary had to persecute thousands of Christians, which resulted in her gaining... Show more

Haier ( the Company ) was China s biggest white goods producer and supplier in 1990s. In 1984,
there was nearly 300 local producers in China market, most of which were producing poor quality
goods. However, customers were willing to pay more for higher quality products and reliable
service. This need created an advantage for differentiation.
In Chinese market, demand was high. Haier being able to read customer need properly, focused on
Product Quality, After Sale Services and BrandBuilding. While there was oversupply in the
market, with product differentiation Haier was able to raise its prices. Their target was to be a first

knowing the causative agent of a disease in a patient, so as to know how it can be treated, to
knowing the correct microorganism to be used for making certain foods or antibiotics. This study

Nitrate reduction was tested for by inoculating a nitrate broth with the unknown gram ( ) culture,
and allowing growth to take place. Adding 2 drops of both sulfanilic acid and О± napththylamine

indicating a positive test. However, if the medium does not change, a second test is performed to
see if nitrite was further reduced. In this second test, zinc powder is added to the broth to catalyze
the reduction of any nitrate present to nitrite. If nitrate is present when the zinc is added the
reduction of this compound will cause the medium to turn red, from the previously added reagents.
Red medium on the second addition indicates nitrate was not reduced and a negative test result.
However, if the medium does not change after the addition of the zinc, the unknown is positive for
nitrate reduction, as the nitrite has just been further reduced, preventing its detection. The result
that yielded was positive on the first step.

Summary Of Blink By Malcolm Gladwell
People of all ages are taught about the importance of having a good first impression look clean, talk
clearly, use good manners. It is especially hammered into young students minds as they prepare to
enter adulthood and begin job interviews. However, what some people do not realize is the true
impact that first impressions have on their decision making ability. Whether it be the impression of
a person, place, or event, the human brain establishes an impression within the first two seconds.
This impression, when trusted, can save someone countless energy that they would spend
attempting to create a seemingly well throughout and thorough decision. The problem is, many
times people overlook their instincts and trust methodical options which take much more time and
are not always reliable sources. Malcolm Gladwell believes that the intuition you gain within the
first few seconds of observation can be just as useful as well thought out and cautiously made
decisions. Throughout the pages of Malcolm Gladwell s Blink, the message of trusting one s
instinct is conveyed through the use of anecdotes, rhetorical questions, and schemes. First,
Gladwell integrates thorough anecdotes within his work to strengthen his message and make it
more convincing. For example, Gladwell... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

argument and leaves his readers with something to think about before continuing farther into the

Vla Mobile Sticker Campaign
The VLA mobile sticker campaign is a problem for many reasons. The first reason is that it
manipulates its vast audience through negative, emotional appeals by sending a vivid message
that affects them in a personal way the well being of their child could be at risk. The VLA s
mobile sticker arouses an emotional, and cognitive response out of parents by embedding the idea
that vaccines are harmful for children and setting up an illusion that their healthcare providers have
deceived them. The VLA appeals to many different emotions such as fear, anger, hatred, and
distrust. When people are fearful, they are easily overwhelmed with feelings and tend to make
irrational decisions. Anger is another powerful emotion that is used in persuasion. In the book,
Techniques of Propaganda and Persuasion, author Magedah Shabo explains, Anger often grows
from feelings of fear and uncertainty. Anger is also a very common reaction to injustice,
humiliation, or betrayal (117). Following fear and anger is hatred and distrust, another powerful
motivator in persuasion. When emotions such as fear and anger towards a specific target have
been established, hatred and distrust develop and limit a person s ability to reason with what is
right versus wrong. Many parents with infants and children are vulnerable and quick to believe any

The Effects Of Drinking Water On Water Quality
Drinking water is a simple idea but such a hard process to master. The water in our lakes and
rivers is not safe to drink due to the toxins from vehicles, industrial plants, and natural sources. It
is sad how much we take drinking water for granted. In many countries around the world, they
do not have easy access to drinking water like we do here in America. In today s society, when
we receive water from a lake or river, it must be treated and cleaned before people can drink it.
The drinking water quality has three main properties that give its ability to clean and be able to
drink that will not get people sick. These three properties include the chemical makeup, physical
properties, and the biological properties of the water quality. The first step of improving the water
quality is by using chemicals to clean and get rid of the toxins that might be in the water. Water is
a made up of many different chemicals. According to (Scatena 2000), as water across the landscape,
it interacts with its environment through a variety of chemical processes, during these processes it
picks up transported dissolved gases, cations and anions, amorphous organics, trace metals, and
particulates. Dissolved Gases are the most abundant on the earth in water. Aquatic life depends on
the dissolved oxygenin the water to live but it also effects the color, taste, odor and chemistry.
Natural organic compounds consist of plant and animal tissue and the products of decomposition.

Hedging Interest Rate Risk with Duration
Before implementing any kind of hedging method against the interest rate risk, we need to
understand how bond prices change, given a change in interest rates. This is critical to successful
bond management. 5.1 Basics of Interest Rate Risk: Qualitative Insights
The basics of bond price movements as a result of interest rate changes are perhaps best
summarized by the п¬Ѓve theorems on the relationship between bond prices and yields. As an
illustration
(see Table 5.1), let us consider the percentage price change for 4 bondswith different annual coupon
rates (8% and 5%) and different maturities (5 years and 25 years), starting with a common
8% yield to maturity (YTM), and assuming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We can state this principle as (other things equal): bond price fluctuations (volatility) and bond
coupon rates are inversely related. Note that we are talking about percentage price fluctuations;
this relationship does not necessarily hold if we measure volatility in terms of dollar price changes
rather than percentage price changes.
These principles lead to the practical conclusion that the two bond variables of major importance
in assessing the change in the price of a bond, given a change in interest rates, are its coupon and
its maturity. This conclusion can be summarized as follows: A decline (rise) in interest rates will
cause a rise (decline) in bond prices, with the maximum volatility in bond prices occurring in longer
maturity bonds and in bonds with low coupons. Therefore, a bond buyer, in order to receive the
maximum price impact of an expected change in interest rates, should purchase lowcoupon, long
maturity bonds. If an increase in interest rates is expected (or feared), investors contemplating their
purchase should consider those bonds with large coupons or short maturities, or both.
These relationships provide useful information for bond investors by demonstrating how the price
of a bond changes as interest rates change. Although investors have no control over the change and
direction in

Diet Analysis Research Paper
NUTRITION FOR TRAINING
An athlete must eat inappropriate diet to match their current exercise training program. The goal of
an optimal training diet is to (Burke and Read, 1989):
1.provide caloric and nutrient requirements
2.promote recovery from training sessions and physi¬ological adaptations
3.achieve and maintain optimal body composition and competition weight
4.try variations of precompetition and competition fuel and fluid intake to determine the body s
responses
Since athletes require significantly more calories then their seditary counterparts, it is useful to
estimate energy requirements for the athlete. Energy requirements can be estimated though

Therefore, schools tend to put children with disabilities in the same classroom and have them learn
the same material at the same pace. That resulted in children with disabilities to not succeed. A
supreme court decision was made that all schools must provide private one on one schooling to
such children with disabilities. Since 1975, great strides have been made in improving educational
opportunities. The great strides can be attributed to the Education for All Handicapped Children Act
which is now called Individuals with Disabilities Act.
According to the Journal of Early Intervention lack of social skills has an impact on children with
disabilities. Social interactions help develop any child s personable skills and helps them establish
who they are. Embedded peer modeling has shown to increase children with autisms ability to
interact with peers. Children with autism have difficulty developing positive peer relationships
(DiSalvo Oswald, 2002; Mconnell, 2002; Strain Hoyson, 2000).
Examples of developmental disabilities are Autism spectrum disorder, behavior disorders, Down
syndrome, fetal alcohol syndrome and intellectual disabilities.

Orion Review
There have been many attempts to capture the feel of the stars and it s constellations. There has
been great works of art, blockbuster films, prizing winning books, and awe inspiring video games
all attempting to capture that otherworldly feel. Now, through this brand new casino slots game, that
universe has been brought to life. You have probably played casino slots before if you are a
gambling man. However, you ll never have played slots like these before. Orion jumps over stars
and moons to stand out from the pack of slots that are available today. No other casino video

Well, if you look at the sides of the reels, there is a button each side. In fact, if you miss these
buttons, that would be alarming as the Spin button is quite noticeable. This elegant design is as
strong as the architecture that is used as the framework for the reels. Your money balance, bet rate,
and winnings are all shown on the bottom of the reels in a neat and pristine fashion. Clear and
concise, Orion blends together both classic substance and modern flair within its controls.
Shining like a star
Many casino slots video games feel very lazily done. There is no heart, character, or charisma
featured within the majority of so called modern titles. Orion is not one of those games, as it
presents something that is driven by charisma. While you play, you may find yourself highly
engaged and at the edge of your seat. Why is that? What is it about Orion that does this so
masterfully well?
The music of Orion is enchanting and vigorous. The music creates a dramatic flair for the reels
as they spin. The rewards chime provides a satisfying ring to your ear as you win too. Winning
free games in Orion is an incredible experience in it s own right, because the music stops for a
moment as the game lets you known you have won a number of free

My First Year At The University Of Leicester
In my first year at the University of Leicester, I was part of a group of three individuals with a
task to create a mortgage calculator that could be used by any individual to assess different loans
offered by different banks in the United Kingdom. In order for clients to find a feasible plan, this
calculator had to have a user friendly interface that allowed flexibility to the client such that they
could enter different loan amounts, different interest rates and get different payment plans. The
project was to be completed within a week.
We wanted to construct one using the software package Microsoft Excel because it is readily
available to most people worldwide and it would produce results as soon as the client entered in the
values.

We met up as a group to discuss what we had found by comparing our different formulas.
I did a program on excel individually that I tested and saw that it worked. I then compared it with
what the others did, made modifications on each of our models as a group and came up with our
best possible model. I researched on different user interfaces that could be implemented and chose
the one we though was the most user friendly.
I was happy that the first method did not work. The new approach offered me the chance to
understand the entire project and not just parts of it so that in future I would be able to build it on
my own. I was able to complete and present the calculator to the lecturer with confidence as I knew
every aspect that was important in making it. I learnt the importance of group work rather than
purely working individually because we came together, shared ideas and came up with the best
solution.

The checklist titled Checklist for Revising and Editing , in The Little Seagull Handbook, provided
eight great tips for revision of a paper. The tips ranged from appealing to a specific audience to
punctuation errors. The biggest issues I have with writing are sentence structure and punctuation
and mechanics.
I do not have a wide variety of knowledge about when commas, colons, and semi colons should be
used. For example, in my first essay I had an enormous problem with comma placement. I would
place the comma after the wrong word like in these two sentences, In the novel, Being There by

The Effect Of Temperature On Ants
Ants are one of the small sized insects from the family of formicidae which consist of high
diversity on earth. They are found everywhere on earth except in Antarctica, and they have
immense impact on terrestrial ecosystems (Heatwole and Muir, 1989). They are vital in moving
and recycling soil and nutrients. They live in colonies ranging from tens to hundreds of millions in
a colony. They communicate and control their colony by chemical messages.
Animals including, birds and insects occupy different temporal niches by being active during
different specific periods of the year and at specific times of the day (Jayatilaka P et al., 2011).
The maintenance of this seasonal and daily activity patterns also allows animals to avoid their
predators, to reduce conflict due to food competitors and to extremely exploit food resources. To
determine suitable times of activity, animals may monitor environmental variables such as light and

As a result, they must control their environment in order to maintain optimal temperatures which
will allow them to be active and alive (Cerda, 2001). The aim of the project was to examine the
effect of temperature on the ant s activity, hypothesized that their activity will decrease as the
temperature increases. Placing the same species of ants in different temperatures was the objective.
The ants were found to be active almost at the same times of the day, even though they were
exposed into different temperatures. I was thinking that the ants that were placed under colder
temperatures were going to be active at night, but then the ants were all showing to be diurnal.
There was an increase in walking speed of the ants that were exposed to higher temperatures. The
ants were even struggling to leave the container. There was higher activity due to the high ambient
temperature leading to higher body temperature of the ants in the

Analysis Of The Coco Mademoiselle
Unspoken Words Through an Ad: Chanel, Coco Mademoiselle and Tommy Hilfiger, TH Bold
Wherever one looks barraged by an advertisement or marketing ads. Whether you are appreciating
a day of shopping or heading to work, promotions encompass you. It appears we never get a break
from this production. In addition, we see them so much we have developed resistance to their
nearness. There are numerous approaches to publicize an item, and ordinarily the similarities are
self evident. Analyzing commercials intently uncovers that paying little respect to the likenesses
and contrasts in notices, the primary motivation behind a promotion is to engage a specific group
of onlookers.
Although both ads are selling fragrances, one is promoting a product for men and other is a
promotion for women. Chane is Coco Mademoiselle promotes sexyness and being sexually
glamorous, while Tommy s Hilfiger s Bold is advertising manliness and athleticism. The intention of
each Ad is seen through its color, model s persona, and through facial expressions.
In the Coco Mademoiselle ad, the colors are explicitly more feminine, as well as elegant
simultaneously; introducing colors of light pearl white on her elegant beady dress, whereas the
wallpaper is a taupe color. The color white is associated with light, goodness, innocence, purity,
and virginity and it is seen as the color of perfectionism. The color taupe is seen as a color of
productivity while the majority of the focus on this ad is the white

Joseph Shaughnessy, BSI Constructors, St. Louis Any business, large or small, takes someone
with a dream and a passion, exactly what Joseph Shaughnessy had. Starting out after his
graduation from college, and ten yesars of employment, him and his friend Lorry Bannes were
already making great strides, holding executive positions, but they wanted more. They took
their desire and created their own business, setting up their future and achieving their goals. Did
they make the right decisions along the way? Did they have the right balance? And how did Joe
use the business to promote his beliefs? Were the Four Bottom Lines Met? Joe emerged his
business by perusing his desire to run a business on his own. Together Joe and Larry took the
risk and began Bannes Shaughnessy Inc. in 1972 (Katz, 2011). Despite their prior experience
and low amount of capital they began with, within five years they had received their first million
dollar contract, proving their existence. From here on out their firm grew, so did their success,
and in turn were helping the community. Joe was compassionate and his work and business
reflected that. Their families were benefiting from their success as well as their own lives. They
were perusing their dreams, and once Joe became the sole owner, he was able to take the business

Argumentative Essay On Budget And Education
During this year s presidential election, tension has been stronger than ever between candidates
with opposing views on budget and economy. Will the money go towards military and defense, or
social programs and education? Donald Trump, a republican businessman, and Bernie Sanders, a
democratic Vermont senator, have conflicting views about how we should spend money. Trump
wants to construct a border wall with his money, focus more on military than social programs, and
cut funding for the Department of Education. However, Sanders, with more liberal values, plans to
fund colleges and social programs, including unemployment and healthcare. I agree with Trump on

Instead of raising taxes to cover the ridiculous cost of free college education $75 billion per year
Trump plans on lowering and simplifying taxes to better fit the lifestyles of working Americans.
In addition, even if Sanders could pull off his college proposal, the classes would be taken less
seriously, just like a free highschool diploma. Sanders would be demoting successful people who
may want to expand their field of work and pass money onto their children. By taxing the rich, he
would be undermining the success of businessmen and women, for the sake of people who should
be able to provide for themselves. Trump believes that, You have to think anyway, so why not
think big? This is exactly what Trump will do; his goals including encouraging a more dynamic
economy. Trump would bring about change, which is something yet another democratic president
would fail to do for our nation. Sanders wants to discourage new businesses by increasing taxes,
while Trump believes in lowering taxes to create new job opportunities for the unemployed. I

those of us that have forgotten about the American

Character Analysis Of Mal Reynolds And Serenity
On occasion when watching a show or movie or when reading a book we can come across
characters to whom we can easily relate. For this assignment we were asked to do just that and
find characters with whom we felt we shared characteristics that could be used to describe
ourselves. The three fictional characters that I believe most represent my personality are Mal
Reynolds from the show fireflyand the movie Serenityfor his loyalty and courage, Jack Sparrow for
his silliness and free spirited nature, and Alucard from the anime Hellsing for his professional
demeanor and mannerisms.
Captain Mal Reynolds is from the short lived, but much loved show serenity. The show was short
lived but gained a loving audience and a Movie that was supposed to help close the rather
unfinished story. In both show and move Reynolds demonstrates extreme loyalty and
protectiveness for his crew. Risking his life to take care of their ship and liveliness. In the show
there are Multiple instances where Reynolds displace his loyalty and protectiveness, such as
when he took on an enemy crew by himself while injured to give his crew a chance to live. This
attribute is a boon to Reynolds as it has earned him the loyalty and love of his crew, more so than
an average crew, they are almost like a family. This has led to them saving him as well on multiple
accounts. Such events include shooting a guy off Mel as he was being strangled and coming back
to save him from suffocation due to air loss after having sent

  • 2. Rock And Roll History The begins of rock and roll have always been challenged as to when they were first established. The most common argument is that is first started in Southern United states, the birth place of many of the first early rock and roll music hits. As the south always had a huge majority of slaves from Africa and immigrants from Europe, through the gathering of different influences that created a connection between African musical traditions with European instrumentation. Immigration of once slaves to populated urban centers including New York City and Chicago meant that both the black and white communities were living in close proximity, resulting in hearing each other s music and even began to follow and impersonate each other s fashions . The Fiji Water Company, LLC provides some water to surrounding villages after cyclones and flash flooding, it also provides some funding towards clean water projects across the islands, but the company is not responsible for the islander s water supply (Heap, 2008). Fiji Water s good works are more hope than reality. Two years after a riot at the water plant, the Vatukaloko Trust Fund was created, a charity targeting several villages surrounding the plant, agreed to donate .15 percent of its Fijian operation s revenues, a company official testified that the total was about $100,000 in 2007 (for perspective, the trade journal Brandweek put Fiji Water s marketing budget at $10 million in 2008) (Lenzer, 2009). The aforementioned presents an ethical issue with Fiji Water profiting from freshwater pumped from the aquifer, then exported and marketed as a luxury product, meanwhile the people of Fiji are getting sicker in certain cases dying from the lack of it. • 5. Psychological Egoism Psychological egoism is the view that everyone always acts selfishly. It describes human nature as being wholly self centered and self motivated. Psychological egoism is different from ethical egoism in their direction of fit to the world. Psychological ego ism is a factual theory. It aims to fit the world. In the world is not how psychological ego ism says it is because someone acts unselfishly, then something is wrong with psycho logical egoism. In my opinion this argumentis completely wrong and unsound. According to James Rachel, an author of Elements of Moral Philosophy, there two main arguments exist against psychological egoism. The first argument can be formulated as such: 1)Everyone always does what they most want to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Rachels p. 74) One can conclude from this that it is the object of the want that should be considered when determining the selfishness of an act. The second argument for psychological egoism is formulated like this: 1)Everyone always does what they most want to do. 2)If are does what one wants to do, ones gets satisfaction. 3)If one gets satisfaction from doing what they want to do, then satisfaction is one s only goal 4)If satisfaction is one s only goal, one acts selfishly. 5)Everyone always acts selfishly. The major criticism of this argument lays in premise three, its factual premise as James Rachel calls it in his book. Opponents of this argument and Rachel being one of them, imply that it is wrong to say that satisfaction is one s only goal because satisfaction doesn t even have to be a goal. Satisfaction is the presumable state that results from ob taining a goal. Thus premise three is wrong. One can say that you can make satisfaction your goal if you will feel bad if you don t do something, but this is not always the case. Satisfaction can result from something else. And it is also incorrect to say that one makes satisfaction his goal then chooses his desires to fulfill the satisfaction. (J. Rachels p. 82) The second criticism is in premise four. Rachels proposes to change the premise, making it less problematic by saying that satisfaction is ones primary goal instead of one s only goal. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Discipline Is Vital To Parenting In Ray Bradbury s The Veldt Discipline is Vital to Parenting In today s society, parents that do not discipline their children are perceived as nonchalant, or carefree. Ray Bradbury, an acclaimed writer, disagrees with this concept. Instead, Bradbury would say that discipline is a vital component of parenting, and without it, children will commit awful acts. With the use of foreshadowing and allusion in his short story, The Veldt , Bradbury depicts that a lack of discipline leads to horrendous, potentially deadly consequences. Bradbury foreshadows the parents fatal deaths to develop the repercussions they face for not disciplining Wendy and Peter. For instance, after the Hadleys have dinner, the parents head to the nursery and find George s old wallet with drops of saliva and blood smears on both sides (Bradbury 8). The disturbing state George and Lydia find the wallet in hints that something is wrong with the nursery and that the virtual animals can affect real life objects. Bradbury also adds the following dialogue between the parents: Those screams they sound familiar. Do they? Yes, awfully (9). The two screams Mr. and Mrs. Hadley heard were strikingly familiar because they were their own screams, hinting that the children wanted them dead and that the lions in the nursery were going to kill them. Throughout The Veldt , the parents hardly discipline their children, or care for them, causing the children to despise them and develop a rotten character. Had the parents properly ruled ... • 7. Crime And Punishment During The Elizabethan Era Crime and Punishment Draft The topic of crime has been booming in modern day news. Stories of corrupt policemen and sexual misconduct allegations have flooded social media and everyday conversation, but crime has always been a large aspect of society. However, modern day laws have been overall consistent for a long period of time. During the Elizabethan era, many new crimes and punishments were created by a growing development and knowledge. Accordingly, the evolution of law grew dramatically during the Elizabethan age. Laws originated from localism and were often controlled by ecclesiastical courts until the medieval age ended. Laws were influenced heavily by the idea of localism, which commonly revolved around the need for local goods, local government, and a local justice system. Often crime was defined by ecclesiastical courts; crimes involving morality or violations of the church s conception of sin were handled locally. However, after the introduction of Roman law, the power to define crime became a duty of the ruler (Brackett, John 1999). The state had complete authority to define crimes, even crimes of morality. The accusatorial method had been the popular choice until the introduction of the inquisitorial method which was based on Roman law. However, it was said This form of prosecution gave little power to judges. (Crime and Punishment 2004). Crimes and punishments were often made to be equal for both commoners and aristocrats. Doctors usually use a lot of little tests to rule out other types of dementia. Methods used to rule out other diseases are brain imaging, biomarker test, testing proteins and spinal fluids. Those are all methods used by testing the patient s body, but there are many other tests that don t involve that kind of testing. Examples of this would be looking into patients family histories (because early onset Alzheimer s can be passed on), history of medicine they have taken or previous or current substance abuse that could make them more susceptible to Alzheimer s, or simply a mental status determination, during which the doctor would ask them questions, ask them to remember certain things, test ability to read and write, and attention span. Also, because Early Onset is diagnosed usually in the patients 30s, 40s, or 50s, age is also taken into consideration before diagnosing. All of these could lead to the diagnosis of Early Onset Alzheimer s. There are many symptoms of Early Onset Alzheimer s. The symptoms are divided into two categories: early and late. Early symptoms include: forgetting things one would usually remember; asking for the same information again; poor judgement; easily losing track of date, time, and where one is; difficulty solving problems; changes in personality and lack of motivation. • 17. Anti Intellectualism By Richard Hofstadter What is Anti Intellectualism? According to Dictionary.com, Anti Intellectualism is defined as being hostile toward intellectuals and the modern academic, artistic, social, religious worlds as well as other theories that are associated with them. Although Richard Hofstadter s Anti Intellectualism in American Life won the 1964 Pulitzer Prize, it is now almost fifty fives out of date. Not to mention the ideas within the book are seen as suggesting a type of self defensive justification rather than an actual deep investigation. Hoftstader used the aftermath of McCarthyism and how there were wide range witch hunts among the academics and progressives and how that is influenced by the reform, socialists and communist movements between the World Wars. Applying McCarthyism, Hoftstader looks at the tension from four different perspectives: religion, politics, business, self help culture, and education. Taking into consideration the year the book was written, each angle is explored from the colonial period up until the 1950s. Throughout the introduction, Hofstadter makes it clear that the purpose of the book is to shed a little light on our cultural problems. Focusing on the social and political phenomenon of anti intellectualism Hofstadter applies broad abstractions to social issues. He explains how applications of the abstracts presented by intellectuals can ultimately pose a threat to the social and political ambitions of certain and specific individuals. Because of this, ... This Blessed House Analysis Performance in This Blessed House Jhumpa Lahiri s short story This Blessed House is one of many stories in her Pulitzer Prize winning collection Interpreter of Maladies and follows a newlywed Indian American couple, Sanjeev and Twinkle, settling into their first suburban home together. As Twinkle begins to find and admire Christian objects scattered around the house , Sanjeev wants to throw them all away, underscoring that Sanjeev deeply cares about how they will look if they display these Christian symbols as Hindus, while Twinkle simply wants to have fun in presenting her discoveries. More deeply rooted in the situation is that Sanjeev wants to look good in front of his coworkers; he does not get along with Twinkle; and the house he is supposed to show off in an upcoming housewarming party only troubles him with the Christian objects. Sanjeev s earlier phone calls with his mother put these three variables of work, spouse, and home together as a formula, when she says that because he has enough money in the bank, he needs a wife to look after and love, and that his money is supposed to go toward raising a family (Lahiri 148). Sanjeev is taught to perform this role of success, and despite it not making him truly happy, his continual pursuit of it emphasizes that he is attempting to perform a fixed role that he does not fit into well. In a way, this event gave way for white Americans to ridicule their black counterparts using the phrase Jim Crow to single them out for their blackness as opposed the increasingly unpopular use of the word Negro. In the 2011 Report to the Congress: Mandatory Minimum Penalties in the Federal Criminal Justice System, we can see a striking change in the focus of the criminal justice system throughout history (2011). In 1951, Congress reformed the way mandatory minimum sentences work in the United States. They did this through three key steps: first, they enacted more mandatory minimums that previously did not exist for many crimes. For many, this was seen as a tough stance against crime and overall a good decision. Second, minimum penalties were applied to many crimes that previously had no minimum sentence such as possession of controlled substances and firearms. The battle of Hastings took place on Senlac Hill, of which Harold was on. He chose this position so the Normans would have to charge uphill to get to them. This meant that the Normans would tire out quicker. Harold put his soldiers in a shield wall, making it harder for William s men to get to them. William divided his men into three groups roughly corresponding to origin. The left third was the Bretons, along with those from Anjou, Maine and Poitou. The right was made up by Frenchmen, along with some men from Picardy, Boulogne, and Flanders, with the centre third consisting of mainly Normans. William s plan was to use his many archers to weaken the frontlines and then charge. However, when his plan failed and his arrows bounced harmlessly off the Saxon shields, he ordered a charge. At his command, all three thirds charged towards the Saxon wall and engaged in battle almost instantaneously. Many Normans were injured in this clash, whereas most of the Saxons were well protected by their shield wall. Thin Layer Chromatography And Column Chromatography Thin Layer Chromatography and Column Chromatography By Maggi Shelton Under the Supervision of Dr. Mills Chavonda The Department of Chemistry and Physics Milledgeville, GA 31061 Abstract: Thin layer chromatography and column chromatography are two different methods that allow for the separation of two miscible solvents. Through column chromatography, a mixture of nonpolar fluorine and polar fluorenone was successfully separated. Thin layer chromatography was then used in order to determine the success of the separation based upon the calculated Rf values, which if the Rf value fell below zero or was above one, then the separation was not successful. Introduction: Methods used to separate miscible solvents include thin layer chromatography (TLC) as well as column chromatography. A method used to separate a mixture of miscible solvents is column chromatography, which is used to purify and separate compounds. The particular speed of the solvents used in the experiment depended upon the properties, being polar or nonpolar, as well as the properties of the prepared column (INSERT SOURCE HERE). With column chromatography, there are two phases that include mobile and stationary phases. In the experiment performed, the glass column used was first packed with a piece of cotton followed by a layer of sand in order to keep the silica gel in place and also to prevent the gel from flowing out of the tube when the particular solvent was added. It is especially hammered into young students minds as they prepare to enter adulthood and begin job interviews. However, what some people do not realize is the true impact that first impressions have on their decision making ability. Whether it be the impression of a person, place, or event, the human brain establishes an impression within the first two seconds. This impression, when trusted, can save someone countless energy that they would spend attempting to create a seemingly well throughout and thorough decision. The problem is, many times people overlook their instincts and trust methodical options which take much more time and are not always reliable sources. Malcolm Gladwell believes that the intuition you gain within the first few seconds of observation can be just as useful as well thought out and cautiously made decisions. Throughout the pages of Malcolm Gladwell s Blink, the message of trusting one s instinct is conveyed through the use of anecdotes, rhetorical questions, and schemes. Duration Hedging 5 Hedging Interest Rate Risk with Duration Before implementing any kind of hedging method against the interest rate risk, we need to understand how bond prices change, given a change in interest rates. This is critical to successful bond management. 5.1 Basics of Interest Rate Risk: Qualitative Insights The basics of bond price movements as a result of interest rate changes are perhaps best summarized by the п¬Ѓve theorems on the relationship between bond prices and yields. As an illustration (see Table 5.1), let us consider the percentage price change for 4 bondswith different annual coupon rates (8% and 5%) and different maturities (5 years and 25 years), starting with a common 8% yield to maturity (YTM), and assuming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We can state this principle as (other things equal): bond price fluctuations (volatility) and bond coupon rates are inversely related. Note that we are talking about percentage price fluctuations; this relationship does not necessarily hold if we measure volatility in terms of dollar price changes rather than percentage price changes. These principles lead to the practical conclusion that the two bond variables of major importance in assessing the change in the price of a bond, given a change in interest rates, are its coupon and its maturity. This conclusion can be summarized as follows: A decline (rise) in interest rates will cause a rise (decline) in bond prices, with the maximum volatility in bond prices occurring in longer maturity bonds and in bonds with low coupons. Therefore, a bond buyer, in order to receive the maximum price impact of an expected change in interest rates, should purchase lowcoupon, long maturity bonds. If an increase in interest rates is expected (or feared), investors contemplating their purchase should consider those bonds with large coupons or short maturities, or both. These relationships provide useful information for bond investors by demonstrating how the price of a bond changes as interest rates change. Julian Castro s Status Achievement In The United States The Democratic National Convention hosted in 2012 were like the conventions in the past in which key Democrats would conjoin and give speeches to have their candidate elected for president. By appealing to American values such as you can achieve anything as long as you work hard and promising to fix the uneven distribution of resources to the different social classes, people believed that Barack Obamawas the person who understood their plight.
