Domestic And International Policy Formulation Essay
At the core of both domestic and international policy formulation is the underlying issue of the
financial enrichment of the state structure and the individual. It is undeniable that significant
transformation of global economic norms has occurred since the advent of the neoliberal age in the
mid 1970s, and the subsequent promotion of government non intervention, deregulation and trade
liberalisation. New Zealand s is no exception to this trend, and our transition from British colony to
independent constitutional monarchy with a unique set of values, ideologies and national identity has
paved the way for our nation to branch out into the newly expanded global market. Indeed, the
development of New Zealand s domestic economy and trade policy has undergone a seismic shift
which has drastically altered our national patterns of trade since 1929. While export trade to the East is
still in its infancy, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a growing demand in the East for New
Zealand agricultural products such as wool, meat, and dairy products. This essay aims to use the
analysis provided by McNair in his article New Zealand s Trade with the East as a comparative tool to
describe the transition of the Eastern global region from one of New Zealand s least influential
markets, to one of its greatest. Furthermore, it aims to examine which economic theory best explains
this increase in instances of trade over time, namely that of the Product Cycle Theory. As such, the

Making Causal Inferences In Psychology
Although many people believe that the only way to confidently make causal inferences in the
psychology world is through true experiments, I believe that observational and other quasi
experiments can be just as effective for making cause and effect conclusions. One of the cardinal rules
in psychology, of course, is that correlation does not equal causation. While this is true, I strongly
believe that when certain conditions are met, we can infer causation even with nonexperimental data. I
have learned about many of these conditions in my Advanced Research Methods textbook and
completely agree with the author s opinion on this topic. Basically, causality has a probabilistic
meaning rather than a deterministic one. When making causality ... Show more content on

With this type of perspective, I believe it is fair to make conclusions about personality as a cause of
behavior (despite the fact that we cannot manipulate a person s stable dispositions) so long as the
model investigating how a trait causes an outcome is well designed, replicated, and combined with
other kinds of evidence (pg 10).
One study that might be fair to draw causal inferences from analyzed the relationship between
explanatory style and academic achievement (pg 287). In this study, researchers found that first year
college students with optimistic explanatory styles obtained a higher GPA than students with
pessimistic explanatory styles (presumably because of greater motivation and perseverance in the face
of adversity) even after controlling for intellectual ability (with SAT scores). What makes me lean
toward a more cause effect rather than a correlational explanation is:
1.) This research is not saying that an optimistic explanatory style necessarily causes students to earn
higher GPAs, but that optimists, because of their tendency to show greater motivation and persistence
(despite times of hardship), develop strategies that are related to higher achievement. Having an

How Is Jem Mature In To Kill A Mockingbird
In chapter twelve of To Kill a Mockingbird Calpurnia starts calling Jem Mister Jem . In the recent
chapters Jem has been showing that he is maturing, understanding more, wise and growing up. I have
experienced something similar to what Jem has over the years I also began to mature and see things
differently. First of all, Jem has changed as a character because as he ages he has become mature, wise
and an understanding person; I have experienced what Jem has aswell. One piece of evidence that
points to Jem becoming wise is Oh, Scout, it s like reorganizing the tax systems of the counties and
things. That kind of thing s pretty dry to most men (Lee 116). This piece of evidence shows how that

Even when one is able to pass the practical hurdles, one must deal with the social concerning hurdles
such as language and cultural differences. Even with the help of organization such as World Health
Organization, providing medical necessities remains a concerning problem. Healthcare providers must
be able to subdue all of these hurdles to be able to provide adequate service to their rural patients.
2
Definition
It has been a problem to discuss the medical needs of rural areas simply because there are many areas
that fall under the rural category. The term rural is considered very vague: a sparsely populated non
urban region. This means that the term rural can be branded to areas ranging from semi developed
areas such as Lanai, to the almost isolated villages of Yendi. Rural populations differentiate from one
another depending on the region they reside in. However, these regions have some things in common
such as non condensed population.
Although the amount of inhabitants varies from area to area, most rural areas share a constant. The
population density of almost all rural areas is low. Yendi, for example has a population 52,000
condensed in a area of 4,087.2 square kilometers. Burley, Idaho, another rural area is slightly more
condensed with a population of 10,456 residing in 16 square kilometers. When compared to the
12,150,996 inhabitants living within the 4,496 square kilometers of the urbanized Los

The World is Too Much With Us by William Wordsworth Essay
The World is Too Much With Us by William Wordsworth
In William Wordsworth s The World is Too Much With Us, this poem heeds warning to his generation.
This warning is that they are losing sight of what is actually important in this world: nature and God.
To some people both of these are the same thing ...as if lacking appreciation for the natural gifts of
God is not sin enough, we add to it the insult of pride for our rape of His land (Wordsworth). With his
words, Wordsworth makes this message perpetual and everlasting. William Wordsworth loved nature
and based many of his poems on it. He uses very strong diction to get his point and feelings across.
This poem expresses Wordsworth s feeling about nature and religion containing a ... Show more

Little we see in Nature that is ours; (3) Wordsworth is expressing that nature is not a commodity to be
exploited by humans, but should coexist with humanity, and We have given our hearts away, a sordid
boon (4)! he pronounces that in our materialistic lifestyles, nothing is meaningful anymore. He says
that even when the sea bares her bosom to the moon (5) and the winds howl, humanity is still out of
tune. These lines (5 7) suggest that nature is helpless and unknown to the destruction man is doing.
For this, for everything, we are out of tune; (8) proposes that even in the spectacle of a storm, human
beings (adults) look on uncaringly implying that we, humans, don t realize the damage we are
inflicting on helpless nature (Wordsworth). The symbolism created by the images and metaphors
represent Wordsworth s deep passion about the conflict between nature and modern progress. Images
and metaphors alluding to mankind s greed, nature s innocence, and the speaker s rejection of
accepted principles all serve to illustrate the speaker s passion to save his generation (Gill).
The final part, the sestet, Wordsworth wishes that he were a pagan (a heathen) raised according to a

Edgar Allan Poe Symbolism In The Raven
The Raven is a narrative poem written by Edgar Allan Poe. Many authors have used talking ravens in
their writing however Edgar Allen Poe was inspired by A Tale of the Riots Eighty by Charles Dickens.
Edgar Allan Poe wrote this poem when his wife was on her deathbed. Throughout the poem, he looks
for some answers related to Lenore, wishing that she would come to him even if in a ghostly form,
because he loves her and wants her. The raven in the poem may also symbolize the narrator as a
person as well. In stanza 12, line 5, the poem reads: ...this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous
bird of yore. These all seem to describe what the narrator is feeling. Yore means long ago, or to look
back in time, like he was looking back on Lenore.
In Edgar Allen Poe s poem, The Raven, the narrator is taunted and goaded by a raven in the midst of
his grieving the death of his love, Lenore. In his poem, Poe does not make it clear if the raven is a real,
physical bird inside the narrator s chambers or if the slightly mad narrator conjured up this being
inside his own head. This differentiation makes it difficult to know what I, personally, would do if
confronted with Poe s raven. However, real or not, I think that I would experience many of the same ...

Whether real or not, such an unexpected and insistent visitor would startle and confuse me. In the
poem, the raven says over and over the word, Nevermore . I don t know if Poe s raven would say
something different to me. The raven s continuous nevermore to the narrator was an answer to the fact
that Lenore indeed was gone and would be gone forever, nevermore to be in the narrator s life. If the
raven was indeed inside my head, then I am sure the bird would echo over and over whatever word
was the key element to whatever problem caused me to hallucinate the bird in the first place, and that
would both frustrate me and give me an increased sense of

Moral Hierarchy In Antigone
There are many different moral levels that people have. People use reasoning that can be identified
with a particular stage on Kohlberg s moral development hierarchy. The higher stages of morality are
not usually achieved, according to Kohlberg. In a play called Antigone, one character, name Antigone,
has a high level of morality. In Antigone, written by Sophocles, he conveys various moral hierarchy
stages through character traits, reasoning, and moral development within this character Antigone is
portrayed as being morally straight and obedient to higher standards. She has a high moral standard.
For example, she argues to Ismene, He s my brother and yours too; and whether you will or not, I ll
stand by him. (Sophocles, ll 52 53). This is showing that she is very dedicated to her family. She will

Ethos is a type of reasoning that uses ethics. In this case, she says, I will stay with him, my brother;
and my crime will be devotion. (Sophocles, ll 89 90). Basically Antigone feels that serving her brother
is more important than obeying the law. This is showing that she places higher importance on moral
ethics than human laws. In another instance, Antigone states, Haven t you heard? Don t you see hatred
marches on love when friends, our own people, our family are treated as enemies? (Sophocles, ll 12
15). In short, she is saying that hatred is ruining her love for her brother in that Kreon is treating
Polyneices like an enemy by not giving him a proper burial. This goes against Antigone s views which
are that her brother deserves a burial regardless of what he did in his lifetime. This reasoning tells us
that Antigone has high levels of morality her standards prove her maturity. This type of reasoning puts
her at the fifth stage of Kohlberg s moral development hierarchy, which is social contract and
individual rights. Antigone has proven to be at a very high moral state throughout this

Wilfred Owen Poetry Analysis
Wilfred Owen s experiences are reflected in his poetry, depicting the carnage and destruction of war.
He portrays his perspective about human conflicts in his poetry and effectively conveys the truth about
the agony of warfare in his war poems Anthem for Doomed Youth and Futility . To portray his
attitudes towards war, Owen uses a diverse range of poetic devices to shock and emotionally stir his
readers into the reality of human conflict.
With many of Owen s poems being semi autobiographical recounts of his experience of war, Owen s
viewpoint on war is tremendously clear. Many countries viewed World War I as an easy war to win,
and one that would be over relatively quickly. It was also heralded as a huge patriotic honour to your
country to become involved. Many young boys got swept up in the promise of honour and joined,
Owen, only 22 at the time, was one of them. He, like every other young soldier wanted to uphold the
honour of his country, but after only a few short weeks, Owen s perspective shifted dramatically. A
love of poetry from a young age prompted him to continue writing while hospitalised for Shellshock
with the encouragement of Siegfried Sassoon, and soon the poetry he wrote showed the general public
what it was like on the front line and the graphic reality of human suffering on the battlefield. In
particular was his distaste for the main point of war the extreme loss of human life, as Owen described
it dying as cattle . All of Owen s poems had

The Importance Of Historical Fiction
Historical Fiction has been around since the beginning of history. Historical Fiction is always
changing and adapting to the new history around us. Since time changes so fast and so much, it is
important to learn about the past. When learning about the past it is less likely that one would repeat
some of the same horrific actions that happened in the past. Historical Fiction is important because it
is the background information to people s knowledge, it is important for the world to learn and know,
and it should be taught in schools to widen children s education levels. Without out all of these things
many people would not even bother with historical fiction. Since history is always changing it is very
to tell a story about fictional events. Historical fiction is just like that. Historical Fiction is a story told
about an event perhaps fictional or real, and about people also fiction or real. ( Phillpott, A History of
Historical Fiction). Historical fiction takes a piece of history and adds fiction story that people can
relate to. For many people when they read historical fiction it opens up an unknown about history.
When a new historical fiction book is read people can learn more about a historical event that they
might not have known about before. Reading historical fiction can give them a new background
knowledge. This then makes people want to learn more about history and read more historical fiction.
Historical fiction is very important because it can bring

The Manhattan Project led by Robert Oppenheimer gave a birth to world s first mass annihilation
device, nuclear bomb. It was a part of a war effort to end the World War II and it worked on Japan by
the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Ever since, there has been numerous nuclear testing carried
out by various countries. Most has commenced on sea or in middle of the desert during 1940s to
1960s. Various countries still attempt testings of the nuclear bombs today. Now, there has been 23
nuclear tests conducted near Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Proving Grounds during World War II and for
some time after the war. The real issue here is that radiation from those tests is lingering far longer
than predicted. This is a serious health risk to the residents on the island. As they have to pick whether

Jane Jacob Research Paper
The best that can be said of the conception is that it did afford a chance to experiment with some
physical and social planning theories which did not pan out. This quote reflects Jane Jacob s
philosophical ideas in an attempt to criticize the social housing s design approach and its associated
urban planning in modern era. The physical and social theories outlines the urban planning idea of
social housing (Utopian idea) and according to Jane s statement, such experiment of these theories
were deem to be unsuccessful. It is inevitably certain to some extent that a provocative statement
towards modern era social housing approaches would hold true due to the minimal success the plans
brought to the city, such as solving the working class commendations temporarily. Nevertheless, it is a
failure to deliver long standing social improvements corresponded with the increasing suspicion of
modernism, one cannot simply attribute ill fate to its innovative physical features (As Jane said, the

society: factors such as difficulty of racial integration, problems of financing and management, lack of
bridging between architecture and planning, as well as the increasing preference of suburban lifestyle
from the rising mid class. These problems reflected evidently in some stereotypes of social housing

antibiotics, such as for a virus, can eventually contribute to making a superbug, again according to the
CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 February 2017, para. 2 5). There are already
many instances of superbugs taking people s lives. For example, just this January 2017, the CDC
reported that a Washoe County resident in Reno, Nevada died in late September 2016 because she had
an infection from a superbug that could not be cured by every available antibiotic in the United States
(Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 1 August 2017, para. 1 5). Posted on the Infectious

Sociological Concepts Of Family, Gender, And Identity Essay
This essay discusses the way in which I understand the sociological concepts of family, gender and
race nuclear family, doing gender, and identity, in particular. Arguably, these three concepts can relate
to each individuals life, through different personal experiences. To demonstrate my argument, I
highlight relevant situations in my own life that further explain my chosen sociological concepts.
The first concept I chose to focus on is family. In particular, the idea of the nuclear family .
A nuclear family is defined as: A couple and their dependent children, regarded as a basic social unit.
My research of this concept will focus on the theories of two sociologists George Peter Murdock, and
Talcott Parsons. George Murdock s theory suggests that there are four essential functions of an ideal
family. 1. Stable satisfaction of the sex drive, 2. The biological reproduction of the next generation, 3.
Socialisation of the young, 4. Meeting its members economic needs (Thompson, 2014). According to
Murdock, these four components are what keep the structure of the basic family unit intact, and by
achieving these four functions create an ideal family model. An opposing theory is Talcott Parson s
functional fit theory. Parson suggests that as society evolves, alternative forms of family life become
more accepted. Society has progressed so much that single parents providing for their children is as
normal as a nuclear family, and there tends to be less need for extended

since Amazon would do that for them after they take possession of these items. They also would not

be able to save on inventory expenses and salary expenses since it would reduce labor requirements
(Kroenke, 2013). GearUp would not have to fulfill the order fulfillment process because Amazon
would take care of this aspect for them (Amazon, 2013).
6. If GearUp were to use FBA, how would it integrate its information systems with Amazon s? (TO
add depth to your answer, Google the term Amazon MWS.) If GearUp were to use FBA, it would be
able to integrate its information systems with Amazon s by using Amazon s Marketplace Web Service,

This would help GearUp to grow its business by allowing a higher level of selling automation

more efficient selling and shipping processes

Differences Between Baseball And Softball
Many people believe that softball is a girls version of baseball. Although softball was modeled after
baseball, it has evolved to become its own definite sport. I grew up playing softball and watching my
two cousins play baseball. While there is much argument as to whether or not one is better than the
other, they are actually quite different. Differences in these two sports exist in the pitching style, the
field, and the rules.
One of the most recognizable differences in softball and baseball is the pitching styles. In softball, the
pitches are thrown underhanded and from a distance of 43 feet. In baseball, the pitching style is
ultimately very different. The pitcher must pitch the ball overhanded and from a distance of 60 feet.
Another difference between the pitching styles is that in softball the pitches are thrown from a flat
pitching mound with a 16 circle drawn from around the pitcher s plate. While in baseball, the pitches
are thrown from an elevated mound with no required circle drawn.
Both softball and baseball are played on a diamond shaped field. The infield usually ... Show more

An official softball game consists of seven innings as opposed to a nine inning baseball game. The
leadoff rule also separates the two sports. In softball, the runner is not allowed to leave the base until
the ball is released from the pitcher s hand, but in baseball the runner is allowed to leave the base at
any time no matter where the ball is located. Another contrast in the rules is that when a softball
pitcher s hands separate the pitch must then be delivered. In baseball, during the extent of the wind up
the pitcher s hands may be separated. Another way in which they are different is that a regulated size
baseball is significantly smaller than a softball. A baseball usually measures between 9.00 and 9.25
inches; a softball measures between 11.88 and 12.13

What Factors Can Be Considered When Conducting Forensic...
What important factors need to be considered when conducting forensic science?
What is a crime scene? What is forensic science and how is it conducted? What factors can impact
evidence and what procedures have to be taken to stop this from happening? What factors have to be
taken into account when conducting forensic science and why? How will not doing this impact a court
verdict? In my assignment I hope to answer these questions.
A crime scene is not necessarily the location of a crime, it can be where the planning took place,
where the body is found and where the evidence is found. The crime scene can be as small as a bite
mark or as large as a geographical location. There are two types of crime scene; primary and
secondary. The ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
First of all, the crime scene has to be cordoned off from the public, this consists of two types of
cordoning; inner and outer. Inner cordoning is where the main forensic examination takes place
whereas the outer cordoning is used to prevent the public from entering. Cordoning is important as it
keeps the public out of the crime scene, so that evidence cannot get tampered with or contaminated,
tents are also put over crime scenes which are outside to avoid people and press looking in on the
crime scene and protect evidence from the weather elements and animals which may accidently
tamper with evidence. Without cordoning the forensic officers wouldn t have any privacy from the
public which could interfere and contaminate evidence. Once the crime scene is cordoned off, a
common approach path is established, whereby stepping stones are placed to prevent cross
contamination. This is important to establish a common approach path because without one evidence
could become contaminated or destroyed for example if a forensic officer accidently stood on a
footprint or a patch of blood, therefore spreading the blood around the crime scene, making it harder
for a hypothesis to be established.
The forensic investigators wear protective clothing and shoe covers to prevent cross contamination,
they also have their own DNA on the data base to eliminate their DNA from the suspects if it did get
on the crime scene. The national data base was established in 1995, which

Should Driving Age Be Raised Research Paper
Should the driving age be raised?
Once I turned 16 years old I started learning the basic rules of the road and driving. I was learning
many things without even having to get on the road before I was ready. I was taught by my parents
whom which have been driving for 20 years and more with a license. I had to learn the basic
fundamentals of how to be responsible for myself and others before getting on the road with other
drivers. Once I got enough practice I was driving on the road with supervision until I was able to
handle driving on my own. Of course I had restrictions on where I can go and what time I have to be
back by. The restrictions didn t even have to be by law it could be from parents as well. But coming
from someone that has been driving for about a year now I believe the driving age should not be
raised.
According to the article Teen driver restrictions a mixed bag by Shari Roan it shows that there has
been a 26% reduction in the rate of fatal crashes involving 16 year old drivers with restrictions. But it

and anytime. It depends if you re just there at the wrong time. But when learning how to drive you re

Natural Gas and Its use as a Alternative Fuel Compared to...
Natural Gas and Its use as a Alternative Fuel Compared to Gasoline Have you ever confused the terms
Natural Gas and Gasoline ? Well don t, because they are two very different types of gases. Natural gas
and Gasoline are considered fossil fuels to most scientists because it is believed they were formed
from the remains of sea animals and plants that died 200 400 million years ago. These sea animals
were then covered by layers of sediment and rock over time which caused them to become buried
deeper and deeper, until enormous amounts of pressure and heat turned them into oil and gas. Raw

They also set off small explosions or drop heavy (Preston, Benjamin I Feel Gassy 5.8.12)
weights on the surface and record the sound waves as they bounce back from the sedimentary rock
layers underground. (www.NEED.org 2011). Scientists may also measure the gravitational pull of rock
masses deep within the earth, yet the most widely used and effective way of finding
Natural gas is by drilling down through the layers of sedimentary rock to reach the rock formations
that contain oil and gas deposits. After natural gas comes out of the ground, it goes to a processing
plant where it is cleaned of impurities and separated into its various components.
Now, the type of natural gas that goes into automobiles is called Liquefied Natural Gas, or
LNG. The process for making LNG starts the same way as producing natural gas, except the natural
gas is cooled to 260 degrees Fahrenheit. By doing this, the natural gas changes into
LNG and its volume is reduced 600 times. Another exceptional way Natural gas is found is by 3

determine accuracy in whereas to drill. Another technique used to find natural gas is called
Hydraulic fracturing. . This involves the injection of more than a million gallons of water, sand and
chemicals at high pressure, down and across into horizontally drilled wells as far as 10,000

Executive Summary
Kota Fibres is a single nylon manufacturing plant in Kota India managed and owed by Ms. Pundir.
The company produces synthetic fiber yarns that are used to make colorful cloth used in creating saris.
The need for saris is very seasonal and as such the demand for synthetic fibers mirrors this seasonality.
Because of these peak seasons, the need for various financial structures throughout the year is present.

Finally yarn manufacturers supply credit to their textile mills. It is important to note that the yarn
manufacturers like Kota Fibres do not receive any credit from their suppliers. It is within this
hierarchy structure that Kota Fibres operates and as a result Kota Fibres should remain mindful of the
industry as a whole because they rely heavily on the downstream activities.
The memo from the transportation manager provides a more positive outlook on Kota Fibres future
operations. The memo details that the new road has drastically improved supply shipments. This
thereby reduces the raw inventory requirement from 60 days to just 30. This decreases the amount of
inventory costs and increases the amount of cash on hand that the firm will have.
Internal Analysis
Kota Fibres liquidity issues are creating problems when paying the excise tax needed in order to move
their product. In addition to the cash shortages, Kota Fibres is not paying creditors on time or in the
correct amounts this is creating a huge financial strain on the organization and this issue needs to be
addressed.
Ms. Pundir is currently paying high dividends to the companies stakeholders; this is a huge concern to
the company s overall profitability. Currently more emphasis is being placed on the payment of
dividends than the payment to creditors.
Currently the organization has uneven levels of production. This creates uneven demand for labour
and as a result layoffs

Peleus: Peleus was a hero in Greek mythology and the son of Aeacus, who was the king of the island
of Aegina. He was husband of the sea nymph Thetis who was able to change form. Together they
nurtured for Achilles, their son. Peleus, Telamon, his brother, and Eurytion were all participants in the
Argonautic expedition. Peleus and Thetis had seven sons, but six of them died when they were born,
leaving Achilles to be their only son.
Achilles: Achilles was a soldier who fought with the Greeks, and he is the only son of Peleus and

however she didn t realize that his heels, the part from which she was holding him, were not touched
by the river waters, therefore leaving him vulnerable. Later, in the Trojan War, a poisonous arrow shot
by Paris and guided by Apollo hit him in his heel and killed him.
Hades: Hades was the brother of Zeus and Poseidon, and the son of Cronus. After the overthrow of
their father, he lost and became the lord of the underworld and the ruler of the dead. The Greeks called
him Plouton, due to the precious metals mined from the earth, therefore, Hades also became the god of

Essay on The Myth of Sisyphus
The Myth of Sisyphus Sisyphus is the absurd hero. This man, sentenced to ceaselessly rolling a rock
to the top of a mountain and then watching it roll back down, is the epitome of the absurd hero
according to Camus. In retelling the Myth of Sisyphus, Camus is able to create an extremely powerful
image which sums up the intellectual discussion which comes before it in the book. We are told that
Sisyphus is the absurd hero as much through his passions as through his torture. His scorn of the gods,
his hatred of death, and his passion for life won him that unspeakable penalty in which the whole
being is exerted toward accomplishing nothing. (p.89). Sisyphus is conscious of his troubles , and ...

In these essays Camus looks the problem of suicide. In a shocking, unnerving manner he opens with
the bold statement that: There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide. (p. 3).
He goes on to discover if suicide is a real answer to the human who is unhappy with life. Or if life is
worth living now that god is dead? The discussion begins and continues not as a metaphysical cobweb
but as a well reasoned statement based on a way of knowing which Camus holds is the only
epistemology we have at our command. We know only two things: This heart within me I can feel,
and I judge that it exists. This world I can touch, and I likewise judge that it exists. There ends all my
knowledge, and the rest is construction. (p. 14) With these as the basic certainties of the human
condition, Camus argues that there is no meaning to life. He disapproves of the many philosophers
who have played on words and pretended to believe that refusing to grant a meaning to life necessarily
leads to declaring that it is not worth living. (p.7) Life has no absolute meaning. In spite of the human
s irrational nostalgia for unity, for absolutes, for a definite order and meaning to the not me of the
universe, no such meaning exists in the silent, indifferent universe. Between this yearning for meaning
and eternal verities and the actual condition

A Romantic And Modernist Perspective

Dr. Vernooy
ENG 237 01
11 December 2014
Memory: A Romantic and Modernist Perspective During an age when Britain was producing more
writing than perhaps ever before in its history; romantic writers such as Wordsworth and Coleridge
place a large emphasis on nature and what impact this construct has on the mind and imagination,
while modernist writers such as Hardy, Lawrence, and Yeats attempt to exercise a strong break from
tradition. This ideal of straying from the pack creates a sense of bitterness and radical doubt
throughout the modernist period, and thus, causes citizens living in this time to carry about their daily
activities with doubt and pessimistic attitudes.
After examining the literary movements of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
One can argue that William Wordsworth believes that memory can be utilized as an anecdote that is
able to cure someone s pain, while a writer such as Thomas Hardy would disapprove of this
Wordsworthian ideal by believing that memory is simply a shroud of gray (Vernooy). This claim can
be supported as true when Wordsworth s Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey is
examined more closely. Within this piece, Wordsworth states, These beauteous forms/Through a long
absence, have not been to me/As is a landscape to a blind man s eye/But oft, in lonely rooms, and mid
the din/Of towns and cities, I have owed to them/In hours of weariness, sensations sweet (Wordsworth
23 27). Here, Wordsworth provides a detailed description about how nature is able to provide a safe
haven for him in a time when Britain s cities are looking to industrialize more than ever. By
personifying nature during this time of economic crisis, Wordsworth is creating an outlet that aids him
in moving forward.
Conversely, Thomas Hardy encompasses the idea of nature and memory by almost insulting
Wordsworth. For instance, Hardy would argue that one cannot sit on the couch and rekindle old
memories in order to transgress, but instead, one needs to be out and about in order to gather as many
physical memories as humanly possible. Within Hardy s Under the Waterfall, the female persona is
attempting to rekindle one of her past memories, which as we all

Metaphors In Popular Culture
Literature, movies, and TV signify various aspects of culture and society using metaphors. Monsters
(e.g., vampires, werewolves, zombies, witches, and mermaids) are, sometimes, cultural metaphors;
they reflect culture issues. The portrayal and the features of such abnormal creatures have been
changed over the years as popular culture has changed. Vampire stories, one in particular, have
undergone a transformation from gothic subgenre to a romantic subgenre. Today, the popularity of
vampires has crossed over to create a vampire subgenre. Dracula and Twilight are two celebrated work
in vampire fiction in which vampires appeared differently in each work. Thereby, this paper aims to
discuss the differences in portraying vampires in Dracula and Twilight, and the cultural significances
which Dracula and Twilight symbolize.
Paul Murgatroyd, in Mythical Monsters in Classical Literature, explains the origin of the word
monster. He states that it is originally monstrum a Latin word which refers to preternatural situations
or evil creatures and it is related to the word moneo that means caution and alert (202). Monsters have

for example, if the opponent makes an advance on them if any physical way, the subject would need to
be able to move quick and make a decision on how to address the situation and defeat their opponent.
The positives of this test are that it is very simplistic and can be conducted at any given time, with a
very small amount of equipment needed for this to be set up. Also, this test would not take long to
carry out.
However, an assistant is always needed as the ruler would need to be dropped by another person, so
the action would be sudden to make the results valid, and this test is not very valid as it can be seen as
too simplistic to accurately calculate the reaction time of an individual.

After completing this test, my result showed that I had an excellent reaction towards a stimulus, and
would be very suitable for sports that would require me to react quickly, for example baseball would
be a suitable sport for me as I could react quickly when batting as once the ball has been bowled, I
would only have a short period of time to bat without getting a strike. if I began to play baseball, and
trained regularly I would be able to maintain a score that would stay in the excellent category.
However, if I did not train in this specific area, these results would decrease if this test was taken

Schemas Child Development
Mental frame work or ways we organizing thoughts around aspects of the world are called schemas.
We have schemas about people, objects around our lives, and situations. Prior knowledge can shape
how we memorize and retain for long term storage and future knowledge. In the next few paragraphs I
will discuss in detail how child development theorist, Jean Piaget, believed these schemas developed.
For Piaget, schemas are the mental structures in which we organize our knowledge of the world
(Robson, pg. 17). An example of an initial schema is when a child begins to understand what a cat is
from a picture book that is being read by a parent. The parent may continue reading about what a cat
looks like. At this time, a schema is forming. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
To begin with, Piaget s theory on the four stages of cognitive development has been highly researched.
He put little to no emphasis on social factors in his theory and came to the conclusion that children do
not think like adults and do not learn from them but by interacting with their physical environment.
Vygotsky, on the other hand, differed from Piaget s thought and believed children learned mostly from
others and he called this process, Scaffolding. According to Eutopia website, scaffolding is a teaching
strategy that provides individualize support based on the learner s zone of proximal development
(Eutopia, 2015). Proximal development is the distance between the actual developmental level as
determine by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determine
through problem solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers
(Bruner,1982). He believed knowledge comes from experiences within their culture and strongly
thought that learning came from the outside in. On the other hand, Piaget theory stated that children
are only able to perform in certain cognitive stages. He found that human understood whatever
information that fit into their view of the world. When information does not fit, then individuals
examine and accommodate the new information, is similar to Piaget s theory on

  • 2. Domestic And International Policy Formulation Essay At the core of both domestic and international policy formulation is the underlying issue of the financial enrichment of the state structure and the individual. It is undeniable that significant transformation of global economic norms has occurred since the advent of the neoliberal age in the mid 1970s, and the subsequent promotion of government non intervention, deregulation and trade liberalisation. New Zealand s is no exception to this trend, and our transition from British colony to independent constitutional monarchy with a unique set of values, ideologies and national identity has paved the way for our nation to branch out into the newly expanded global market. Indeed, the development of New Zealand s domestic economy and trade policy has undergone a seismic shift which has drastically altered our national patterns of trade since 1929. While export trade to the East is still in its infancy, it is becoming increasingly clear that there is a growing demand in the East for New Zealand agricultural products such as wool, meat, and dairy products. This essay aims to use the analysis provided by McNair in his article New Zealand s Trade with the East as a comparative tool to describe the transition of the Eastern global region from one of New Zealand s least influential markets, to one of its greatest. Furthermore, it aims to examine which economic theory best explains this increase in instances of trade over time, namely that of the Product Cycle Theory. As such, the ... • 4. Making Causal Inferences In Psychology Although many people believe that the only way to confidently make causal inferences in the psychology world is through true experiments, I believe that observational and other quasi experiments can be just as effective for making cause and effect conclusions. One of the cardinal rules in psychology, of course, is that correlation does not equal causation. While this is true, I strongly believe that when certain conditions are met, we can infer causation even with nonexperimental data. I have learned about many of these conditions in my Advanced Research Methods textbook and completely agree with the author s opinion on this topic. Basically, causality has a probabilistic meaning rather than a deterministic one. When making causality ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... With this type of perspective, I believe it is fair to make conclusions about personality as a cause of behavior (despite the fact that we cannot manipulate a person s stable dispositions) so long as the model investigating how a trait causes an outcome is well designed, replicated, and combined with other kinds of evidence (pg 10). One study that might be fair to draw causal inferences from analyzed the relationship between explanatory style and academic achievement (pg 287). In this study, researchers found that first year college students with optimistic explanatory styles obtained a higher GPA than students with pessimistic explanatory styles (presumably because of greater motivation and perseverance in the face of adversity) even after controlling for intellectual ability (with SAT scores). What makes me lean toward a more cause effect rather than a correlational explanation is: 1.) This research is not saying that an optimistic explanatory style necessarily causes students to earn higher GPAs, but that optimists, because of their tendency to show greater motivation and persistence (despite times of hardship), develop strategies that are related to higher achievement. In the recent chapters Jem has been showing that he is maturing, understanding more, wise and growing up. I have experienced something similar to what Jem has over the years I also began to mature and see things differently. First of all, Jem has changed as a character because as he ages he has become mature, wise and an understanding person; I have experienced what Jem has aswell. One piece of evidence that points to Jem becoming wise is Oh, Scout, it s like reorganizing the tax systems of the counties and things. That kind of thing s pretty dry to most men (Lee 116). Even with the help of organization such as World Health Organization, providing medical necessities remains a concerning problem. Healthcare providers must be able to subdue all of these hurdles to be able to provide adequate service to their rural patients. 2 Definition It has been a problem to discuss the medical needs of rural areas simply because there are many areas that fall under the rural category. The term rural is considered very vague: a sparsely populated non urban region. This means that the term rural can be branded to areas ranging from semi developed areas such as Lanai, to the almost isolated villages of Yendi. Rural populations differentiate from one another depending on the region they reside in. However, these regions have some things in common such as non condensed population. Although the amount of inhabitants varies from area to area, most rural areas share a constant. The population density of almost all rural areas is low. Yendi, for example has a population 52,000 condensed in a area of 4,087.2 square kilometers. Burley, Idaho, another rural area is slightly more condensed with a population of 10,456 residing in 16 square kilometers. When compared to the 12,150,996 inhabitants living within the 4,496 square kilometers of the urbanized Los ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 7. The World is Too Much With Us by William Wordsworth Essay The World is Too Much With Us by William Wordsworth In William Wordsworth s The World is Too Much With Us, this poem heeds warning to his generation. This warning is that they are losing sight of what is actually important in this world: nature and God. To some people both of these are the same thing ...as if lacking appreciation for the natural gifts of God is not sin enough, we add to it the insult of pride for our rape of His land (Wordsworth). With his words, Wordsworth makes this message perpetual and everlasting. William Wordsworth loved nature and based many of his poems on it. He uses very strong diction to get his point and feelings across. This poem expresses Wordsworth s feeling about nature and religion containing a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Little we see in Nature that is ours; (3) Wordsworth is expressing that nature is not a commodity to be exploited by humans, but should coexist with humanity, and We have given our hearts away, a sordid boon (4)! he pronounces that in our materialistic lifestyles, nothing is meaningful anymore. He says that even when the sea bares her bosom to the moon (5) and the winds howl, humanity is still out of tune. These lines (5 7) suggest that nature is helpless and unknown to the destruction man is doing. For this, for everything, we are out of tune; (8) proposes that even in the spectacle of a storm, human beings (adults) look on uncaringly implying that we, humans, don t realize the damage we are inflicting on helpless nature (Wordsworth). The symbolism created by the images and metaphors represent Wordsworth s deep passion about the conflict between nature and modern progress. Images and metaphors alluding to mankind s greed, nature s innocence, and the speaker s rejection of accepted principles all serve to illustrate the speaker s passion to save his generation (Gill). The final part, the sestet, Wordsworth wishes that he were a pagan (a heathen) raised according to a different vision of the world, so that, standing on this pleasant lea (Nicholas), he might see images of ... • 8. Edgar Allan Poe Symbolism In The Raven The Raven is a narrative poem written by Edgar Allan Poe. Many authors have used talking ravens in their writing however Edgar Allen Poe was inspired by A Tale of the Riots Eighty by Charles Dickens. Edgar Allan Poe wrote this poem when his wife was on her deathbed. Throughout the poem, he looks for some answers related to Lenore, wishing that she would come to him even if in a ghostly form, because he loves her and wants her. The raven in the poem may also symbolize the narrator as a person as well. In stanza 12, line 5, the poem reads: ...this grim, ungainly, ghastly, gaunt, and ominous bird of yore. These all seem to describe what the narrator is feeling. Yore means long ago, or to look back in time, like he was looking back on Lenore. In Edgar Allen Poe s poem, The Raven, the narrator is taunted and goaded by a raven in the midst of his grieving the death of his love, Lenore. In his poem, Poe does not make it clear if the raven is a real, physical bird inside the narrator s chambers or if the slightly mad narrator conjured up this being inside his own head. This differentiation makes it difficult to know what I, personally, would do if confronted with Poe s raven. However, real or not, I think that I would experience many of the same ... I don t know if Poe s raven would say something different to me. • 9. Moral Hierarchy In Antigone There are many different moral levels that people have. People use reasoning that can be identified with a particular stage on Kohlberg s moral development hierarchy. The higher stages of morality are not usually achieved, according to Kohlberg. In a play called Antigone, one character, name Antigone, has a high level of morality. In Antigone, written by Sophocles, he conveys various moral hierarchy stages through character traits, reasoning, and moral development within this character Antigone is portrayed as being morally straight and obedient to higher standards. She has a high moral standard. For example, she argues to Ismene, He s my brother and yours too; and whether you will or not, I ll stand by him. (Sophocles, ll 52 53). In this case, she says, I will stay with him, my brother; and my crime will be devotion. (Sophocles, ll 89 90). Basically Antigone feels that serving her brother is more important than obeying the law. This is showing that she places higher importance on moral ethics than human laws. In another instance, Antigone states, Haven t you heard? Don t you see hatred marches on love when friends, our own people, our family are treated as enemies? (Sophocles, ll 12 15). In short, she is saying that hatred is ruining her love for her brother in that Kreon is treating Polyneices like an enemy by not giving him a proper burial. This goes against Antigone s views which are that her brother deserves a burial regardless of what he did in his lifetime. This reasoning tells us that Antigone has high levels of morality her standards prove her maturity. This type of reasoning puts her at the fifth stage of Kohlberg s moral development hierarchy, which is social contract and individual rights. • 10. Wilfred Owen Poetry Analysis Wilfred Owen s experiences are reflected in his poetry, depicting the carnage and destruction of war. He portrays his perspective about human conflicts in his poetry and effectively conveys the truth about the agony of warfare in his war poems Anthem for Doomed Youth and Futility . To portray his attitudes towards war, Owen uses a diverse range of poetic devices to shock and emotionally stir his readers into the reality of human conflict. With many of Owen s poems being semi autobiographical recounts of his experience of war, Owen s viewpoint on war is tremendously clear. Many countries viewed World War I as an easy war to win, and one that would be over relatively quickly. It was also heralded as a huge patriotic honour to your country to become involved. Many young boys got swept up in the promise of honour and joined, Owen, only 22 at the time, was one of them. He, like every other young soldier wanted to uphold the honour of his country, but after only a few short weeks, Owen s perspective shifted dramatically. A love of poetry from a young age prompted him to continue writing while hospitalised for Shellshock with the encouragement of Siegfried Sassoon, and soon the poetry he wrote showed the general public what it was like on the front line and the graphic reality of human suffering on the battlefield. In particular was his distaste for the main point of war the extreme loss of human life, as Owen described it dying as cattle . All of Owen s poems had ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 11. The Importance Of Historical Fiction Historical Fiction has been around since the beginning of history. Historical Fiction is always changing and adapting to the new history around us. Since time changes so fast and so much, it is important to learn about the past. When learning about the past it is less likely that one would repeat some of the same horrific actions that happened in the past. Historical Fiction is important because it is the background information to people s knowledge, it is important for the world to learn and know, and it should be taught in schools to widen children s education levels. Without out all of these things many people would not even bother with historical fiction. Since history is always changing it is very to tell a story about fictional events. Historical fiction is just like that. Historical Fiction is a story told about an event perhaps fictional or real, and about people also fiction or real. ( Phillpott, A History of Historical Fiction). Historical fiction takes a piece of history and adds fiction story that people can relate to. For many people when they read historical fiction it opens up an unknown about history. When a new historical fiction book is read people can learn more about a historical event that they might not have known about before. Reading historical fiction can give them a new background knowledge. This then makes people want to learn more about history and read more historical fiction. Various countries still attempt testings of the nuclear bombs today. Now, there has been 23 nuclear tests conducted near Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Proving Grounds during World War II and for some time after the war. This quote reflects Jane Jacob s philosophical ideas in an attempt to criticize the social housing s design approach and its associated urban planning in modern era. The physical and social theories outlines the urban planning idea of social housing (Utopian idea) and according to Jane s statement, such experiment of these theories were deem to be unsuccessful. It is inevitably certain to some extent that a provocative statement towards modern era social housing approaches would hold true due to the minimal success the plans brought to the city, such as solving the working class commendations temporarily. Nevertheless, it is a failure to deliver long standing social improvements corresponded with the increasing suspicion of modernism, one cannot simply attribute ill fate to its innovative physical features (As Jane said, the Utopian and Utopia), but should rather considered a range of other elements in the larger aspect of society: factors such as difficulty of racial integration, problems of financing and management, lack of bridging between architecture and planning, as well as the increasing preference of suburban lifestyle from the rising mid class. • 15. Sociological Concepts Of Family, Gender, And Identity Essay This essay discusses the way in which I understand the sociological concepts of family, gender and race nuclear family, doing gender, and identity, in particular. Arguably, these three concepts can relate to each individuals life, through different personal experiences. To demonstrate my argument, I highlight relevant situations in my own life that further explain my chosen sociological concepts. The first concept I chose to focus on is family. In particular, the idea of the nuclear family . A nuclear family is defined as: A couple and their dependent children, regarded as a basic social unit. My research of this concept will focus on the theories of two sociologists George Peter Murdock, and Talcott Parsons. George Murdock s theory suggests that there are four essential functions of an ideal family. 1. Stable satisfaction of the sex drive, 2. The biological reproduction of the next generation, 3. Socialisation of the young, 4. Meeting its members economic needs (Thompson, 2014). According to Murdock, these four components are what keep the structure of the basic family unit intact, and by achieving these four functions create an ideal family model. An opposing theory is Talcott Parson s functional fit theory. Parson suggests that as society evolves, alternative forms of family life become more accepted. Society has progressed so much that single parents providing for their children is as normal as a nuclear family, and there tends to be less need for extended ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Although softball was modeled after baseball, it has evolved to become its own definite sport. I grew up playing softball and watching my two cousins play baseball. While there is much argument as to whether or not one is better than the other, they are actually quite different. Differences in these two sports exist in the pitching style, the field, and the rules. One of the most recognizable differences in softball and baseball is the pitching styles. In softball, the pitches are thrown underhanded and from a distance of 43 feet. In baseball, the pitching style is ultimately very different. The pitcher must pitch the ball overhanded and from a distance of 60 feet. Another difference between the pitching styles is that in softball the pitches are thrown from a flat pitching mound with a 16 circle drawn from around the pitcher s plate. While in baseball, the pitches are thrown from an elevated mound with no required circle drawn. Both softball and baseball are played on a diamond shaped field. The infield usually ... Inner cordoning is where the main forensic examination takes place whereas the outer cordoning is used to prevent the public from entering. Cordoning is important as it keeps the public out of the crime scene, so that evidence cannot get tampered with or contaminated, tents are also put over crime scenes which are outside to avoid people and press looking in on the crime scene and protect evidence from the weather elements and animals which may accidently tamper with evidence. Without cordoning the forensic officers wouldn t have any privacy from the public which could interfere and contaminate evidence. Once the crime scene is cordoned off, a common approach path is established, whereby stepping stones are placed to prevent cross contamination. This is important to establish a common approach path because without one evidence could become contaminated or destroyed for example if a forensic officer accidently stood on a footprint or a patch of blood, therefore spreading the blood around the crime scene, making it harder for a hypothesis to be established. One can argue that William Wordsworth believes that memory can be utilized as an anecdote that is able to cure someone s pain, while a writer such as Thomas Hardy would disapprove of this Wordsworthian ideal by believing that memory is simply a shroud of gray (Vernooy). This claim can be supported as true when Wordsworth s Lines Composed a Few Miles Above Tintern Abbey is examined more closely. Within this piece, Wordsworth states, These beauteous forms/Through a long absence, have not been to me/As is a landscape to a blind man s eye/But oft, in lonely rooms, and mid the din/Of towns and cities, I have owed to them/In hours of weariness, sensations sweet (Wordsworth 23 27). Here, Wordsworth provides a detailed description about how nature is able to provide a safe haven for him in a time when Britain s cities are looking to industrialize more than ever. By personifying nature during this time of economic crisis, Wordsworth is creating an outlet that aids him in moving forward. Conversely, Thomas Hardy encompasses the idea of nature and memory by almost insulting Wordsworth. For instance, Hardy would argue that one cannot sit on the couch and rekindle old memories in order to transgress, but instead, one needs to be out and about in order to gather as many physical memories as humanly possible. The equipment needed to measure this is a 1 meter long ruler and a calculator. The person to be tested stands near the edge of a table, resting their elbow on the table so that their wrist is extended over the side. The assessor holds the ruler vertically in the air between the index finger and thumb of the subject, but not touching. The zero mark should be lined by to the finger and thumb. The positives of this test are that it is very simplistic and can be conducted at any given time, with a very small amount of equipment needed for this to be set up. Also, this test would not take long to carry out. However, an assistant is always needed as the ruler would need to be dropped by another person, so the action would be sudden to make the results valid, and this test is not very valid as it can be seen as too simplistic to accurately calculate the reaction time of an individual. My result:7.4cm After completing this test, my result showed that I had an excellent reaction towards a stimulus, and would be very suitable for sports that would require me to react quickly, for example baseball would be a suitable sport for me as I could react quickly when batting as once the ball has been bowled, I would only have a short period of time to bat without getting a strike. if I began to play baseball, and trained regularly I would be able to maintain a score that would stay in the excellent category. However, if I did not train in this specific area, these results would decrease if this test was taken ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the next few paragraphs I will discuss in detail how child development theorist, Jean Piaget, believed these schemas developed. For Piaget, schemas are the mental structures in which we organize our knowledge of the world (Robson, pg. 17). An example of an initial schema is when a child begins to understand what a cat is from a picture book that is being read by a parent. The parent may continue reading about what a cat looks like. He put little to no emphasis on social factors in his theory and came to the conclusion that children do not think like adults and do not learn from them but by interacting with their physical environment. Vygotsky, on the other hand, differed from Piaget s thought and believed children learned mostly from others and he called this process, Scaffolding. According to Eutopia website, scaffolding is a teaching strategy that provides individualize support based on the learner s zone of proximal development (Eutopia, 2015). Proximal development is the distance between the actual developmental level as determine by independent problem solving and the level of potential development as determine through problem solving under adult guidance or in collaboration with more capable peers (Bruner,1982). He believed knowledge comes from experiences within their culture and strongly thought that learning came from the outside in. On the other hand, Piaget theory stated that children are only able to perform in certain cognitive stages. He found that human understood whatever information that fit into their view of the world.
