FIVE MAIN ELEMENTS IN A PLOT
a. Exposition
 this is the beginning of the story.The characters and setting are
established and the conflict or main problem is introduced.
b. Rising action
 it occurs when series of events builds up to the conflict.
Excitement, tension, or crisis is encountered here.
c. Climax
 it is the main point of the plot.There is a turning point of the
story, which is meant to be the moment of the highest interest
and emotion.

 it occurs when events and complications begin to resolve.
The result of the actions of the main characters are put
forward.
e. Resolution
 it is the end of the story, which may occur with either

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF SHORT
STORIES
1. Short stories are, of course, short and can usually be read at a single
sitting.
2. A short story has a single focus, either on developing characters or
complex plot including interesting subplots, or on elaborating the
setting or atmosphere.
3. Characters are few and introduction for each one is done briefly just to
explain his or her presence in the story.
4. In short story, there is often a surprise ending or unexpected twist at the
end.
5. Short stories usually end at or soon after the climax and will often leave
much to the reader’s imagination.
